We Are Stronger and Safer Together!

Every day, we walk onto construction sites with one goal in mind – get the job done safely. We take great pride in the role we play shaping the communities in which we live, work, and play. But even more than that, we feel an unwavering responsibility to one another, our families, and our friends to make sure we all return home safe every day.

In our industry, safety is not just a series of procedures and protocols, but a unified culture that empowers every person on the job site – from the craft professionals to project and business leaders – to recognize and act on any potential risk. We’re building the awareness of holistic safety, requiring a strong mind, strong body, and the right state of mind for every task, on every job, every day. That’s why more than 70 national and global construction firms join forces for Safety Week with a single aim: to provide the vision, insights, resources, and equipment standards to inspire everyone in the industry to be leaders in safety.

Safety Week is a show of force, an opportunity for people, companies, and even competitors, to work together and celebrate the incredibly hard work by people in our industry who make safety the foundation of everything they do.

Celebrate safety where you work and demonstrate your continued commitment to building a stronger, safer industry.

This month we were pleased to have Shavel’le Olivier and Chavella Lee-Pacheco, founders of Consult Lela, as guest speakers for our March Coffee Hour celebrating Women’s History Month! We all had the privilege of hearing how Shavel’le and Chavella are making a significant impact in their communities. From discussions about decision-making power to personal journeys of empowerment, the event was both enlightening and inspiring. One of the key takeaways from the event was the importance of community-oriented leadership. The need for transparency in decision-making processes within state agencies was emphasized, highlighting the significance of understanding who holds the decision-making power. Shavel’le and Chavella emphasized the critical role of transparency in fostering trust and engagement within communities. Moreover, the event underscored the value of amplifying diverse voices within our communities. By providing a platform to share their personal journeys and experiences, we not only celebrate their achievements but also recognize the unique perspectives they bring to the table. As we strive to create inclusive environments, it’s essential to embrace the richness of diversity and actively promote representation.

To celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Howard Stein Hudson (HSH) Equity and Inclusion (E&I) Committee organized staff outings to The Embrace on the Boston Common. Commissioned by Embrace Boston, “the Embrace Memorial is an important cultural symbol of equity and justice for Boston residents and all those who visit the City. The artwork is a permanent monument representing the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King’s love and powerful presence in Boston, a time that helped shape their approach to an equitable society.”

The E&I Committee also compiled other MLK Day events and resources for staff who were unable to attend the in-person outings. These events were in communities across the Commonwealth and beyond, including New York, Nashville, and North Carolina.

After a brief summer hiatus, the HSH Equity and Inclusion Committee hosted a successful September Coffee Hour! Held on the International Day of Peace, HSH staff learned about the United Nations (UN) campaign to inspire people to act on Sustainable Development Goals – a Healthy Planet, a Just Society, a Better Economy, and a World Working Together. According to the UN, “the Goals can improve life for all of us. Cleaner air. Safer cities. Equality. Better jobs. These issues matter to everyone.” As of October 3, 2023, 15,056,018 actions towards these Sustainable Development Goals have been taken across the globe.

HSH also used this time to reflect on our summers, look ahead to the final quarter of the year, and debate how early is too early for pumpkin spice. Staff gathered in small groups to share accomplishments we’re proud of from this summer; our summer travel adventures; summer connections with coworkers outside of work; things we’re looking forward to this fall; things we want to accomplish in the last quarter of the year; and when should pumpkin spice items be dropped? The debate was fun and lively with a resounding consensus that, yes, August is too early to drop pumpkin spice!

The post International Day of Peace Coffee Hour first appeared on Howard Stein Hudson:.

MVP is a grant-funded program that assists municipalities in Massachusetts in planning how to be climate-change resilient. It also provides resources to educate residents about environmental issues in their city or town.

During their presentation, Chris and Taylor described the work they did for the MVP project in the Towns of Hampden and East Longmeadow. They showed example project recommendations they offered to the towns, including how to address flooding. Some of their recommendations included improving infrastructure and cultivating natural solutions, such as rain gardens. Taylor and Chris also discussed the public engagement process, and how residents led the planning effort. Their presentation ended with a Q&A where questions ranged from native plants to the role of infrastructure maintenance in improving climate resiliency.

The post Earth Month Coffee Hour first appeared on Howard Stein Hudson:.

To celebrate Women’s History Month, the HSH E&I committee invited Denisha McDonald, founder of Our Village Initiative, a social impact platform dedicated to closing the racial wealth gap, as a guest speaker. Our Village Initiative provides real estate and financial education. Denisha’s team has helped create over 58 affordable homeownership opportunities for families in Boston. They also provide scholarships to high school students, and advocate for the creation of affordable homeownership inventory.

Denisha presented on her personal journey from sports medicine to building a village focused on Black wealth. Her story begins in Trinidad, where being raised by her aunts and grandparents taught her valuable lessons regarding community. Her journey took her to Boston University for her bachelor’s degree and then Florida, where she worked with elite high school athletes and learned about persistence and focus from her students and their parents. This experience reminded her of her commitment to help those who most need it.

After moving back to Boston, Denisha launched the Our Village Initiative to help close the racial wealth gap. Their mission is “to increase the rate of homeownership in communities of color by creating and curating solutions to help you learn how to save, invest, and own your legacy.”

After the presentation, HSH staff were given the opportunity to ask questions, including how Denisha made the transition from sports medicine to social impact through real estate, challenges she has faced, lessons to those who are interested in helping their communities increase affordable housing, and what keeps her committed to her mission.

The post Women’s History Month Coffee Hour first appeared on Howard Stein Hudson:.

To celebrate Black History Month, the HSH E&I committee organized group outings to the Museum of African American History in Boston. The Beacon Hill museum is a short walk from the HSH Boston office and features the African Meeting House, a registered National Historic Landmark, and the Abiel Smith School. Both buildings were built in the early 1800s and are two of the museum’s most valuable assets.

As part of the tour, staff explored the museum’s current exhibitions: Selections from the Collection and Jazz Scene in Boston: Telling the Local Story. The museum, “holds a collection of over 3,000 items accrued over fifty years. Selections from the Collection feature samples of historical artifacts and art collections providing a lens unique to the narrative of African-descended people, places, and events in America.” The visit concluded with a tour of the African Meeting House, which was once a church, a school, and community meeting place. The African Meeting House has been returned to its 1855 appearance through historic restoration and preservation and was a favorite for HSH staff.

Staff also appreciated learning more history about our office neighborhood and left the museum with valuable new knowledge. Another museum patron made a remark that resonated with many of the staff: “The Museum of African American History is much more than a collection of artifacts; it’s a window into a time when voices from the Boston community started a movement that changed our country. I learn something new every time I visit.”

The first HSH Book Club of 2023 met to discuss the book The Given Day by Dennis Lehane. The Given Day is a historical fiction novel set in Boston in the early 20th century. It follows two main characters, Danny Coughlin, an Irish Boston Police patrolman, and Luther Lawrence, a Black man from Tulsa fleeing from a violent crime of self-defense, as they mature and navigate their lives against the backdrop of the Spanish flu outbreak, the Red Scare, and the Boston Police Strike of 1919.

Lehane’s other works include Shutter Island and Mystic River. He was also a writer for HBO’s The Wire and Boardwalk Empire. He has a knack for capturing turbulent moments and illustrating complex human emotions. Both talents are on display in The Given Day as his characters experience the social and political unrest of the period. Lehane was also born and raised in Dorchester, which sparked his interest in Boston History.

The Book Club members reflected on their experiences reading the book and the impact it had on them. Each member walked away with newfound interests in the events covered in the book. Some even tried desperately to find out whether some characters and minor events were based on facts. The Given Day is a captivating novel that brought out many emotions, and overall, a very entertaining pick to read over the holiday season.

The post HSH Book Club – The Given Day first appeared on Howard Stein Hudson:.

In January 2023, the E&I Committee shared several resources for staff to learn more about Lunar New Year. These resources included online learning materials, local events, and recommendations for local eateries. Many different cultures and communities around the world celebrate Lunar New Year. There is a lot to learn, celebrate, experience, and eat as part of these festivities. And since we are on the topic of eating: the E&I committee purchased pastries from locally owned Asian restaurants in Boston, Chelmsford, and Worcester. Baked goods are a staple in some Lunar New Year festivities. We hope everyone enjoyed the steamed pork buns or mochi ice cream.

We encourage you to attend these festivals next Lunar New Year.

This November, HSH’s E&I committee hosted a coffee hour to recognize and learn about Movember, an annual event where men grow moustaches to raise awareness on men’s physical and mental health. Movember is a play on words for the Australian-English nickname for moustache, “Mo,” mixed with the month in which it’s recognized, “November.” As part of the coffee hour, we watched videos explaining why Movember is important, discussed some of the challenges and stigmas men face in getting much needed physical and mental health assistance, and thought about how some of these stigmas present themselves in our lives. Learn more about Movember and some practices to reach out to the men close in your life by visiting Movember’s webpage: movember.com.

The post Movember Coffee Hour first appeared on Howard Stein Hudson:.
