Using a combination of remote sensing and field data, scientists from Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC), Boston University, and the University of Maryland were able to produce the first "wall-to-wall" map (with a spatial resolution of 500 m x 500 m) of carbon storage of forests, shrublands, and savannas in the tropics of Africa, Asia, and South America. Colors on the map represent the amount of carbon density stored in the vegetation in a continuum fashion (Figure 1). Reliable estimates of carbon storage are critical to understanding the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere by changes in land cover and land use.
Farfetched? It isn’t .

A Nigerian official responsible for the NIGCOMSAT-1, Ahmed Rufai, had disclosed that Nigeria will earn about $1.05 billion from the satellite every year, “a major part of the earnings coming in from the sale and leasing of transponders from NIGCOMSAT-1.” Transponders—or the parts of the communication satellite that are “for sale”—are one of the key satellite components because they receive, cross-examine, amplify and retransmit the signals back to earth.
Technology

Our primary application aircraft is an Air Tractor 301. It’s a 1350 litre capacity aircraft with a 600 HP radial engine. We can run this aircraft on Automotive Fuel which allows us a significant saving over the cost of running Avgas.

Our AirTractor is equipped with JARBA booms. This spray boom was invented and developed by Jones Air, a very progressive aerial cotton spraying company in St George QLD. The JARBA system incorporates a FarmScan on board spray controller and maintains a constant flow rate per hectare, regardless of ground speed. It also maintains a constant droplet size, regardless of airspeed. (It does this by rotating the nozzles into or out of the airflow.) Application rate and droplet size are critical to ensuring an effective job and minimising drift, which is importantly going to keep your neighbours happy. We are unique in North Queensland in using this system.

Our second application aircraft is a model known as the Eagle. The Eagle was designed and built during the energy crisis at the beginning of the 1980s. Its extraordinarily long wing span and choice of engine enable it to cover more hectares per litre of fuel with a very wide, even spray pattern with minimal drift. We commenced operations with the Eagle in April ’09 and are finding it a very effective platform. The Eagle is rapidly becoming our platform of choice.
They would be put to use carrying out reconnaissance missions on India’s mountainous borders with China and Pakistan, and along India’s long coastal waters. India was said to have been close to sealing the deal in 2004, but it was postponed due to the change in governments in New Delhi.

REMOTE SENSING CLUB IS NON-PROFITABLE.
September 2, 2011: Russia has introduced its first armed UAV; the Lutch. The 800 kg (1,760 pound) aircraft can carry up to 160 kg (352 pounds) of weapons. Based on the two-seat Sigma 5 sports aircraft, Lutch is designed to stay airborne for 18 hours, or up to 30 if fewer sensors and weapons are carried. Max speed is 270 kilometers an hour and the Lutch can operate up to 350 kilometers from the base station. Weapons would be current anti-tank missiles, which tend to weigh 50 kg (110 pounds) and have a range of 6,000 meters.

more

REMOTE SENSING CLUB IS NON-PROFITABLE. The device was displayed in the United States, where it is expected to be marketed soon.
The twin-rotor, vertical take-off UAV is optimized for operations in urban zones.
The mini-helicopter is so compact it can be carried in backpacks, with spare batteries and a computer, by two soldiers who control it from a laptop computer.
At 4.76 feet long and a rotor span of 2.46 feet, IAI boasts that the Ghost is small enough to fly into buildings through windows to provide real-time intelligence for Special Forces or company-size infantry units.
Its imaging capabilities, day and night, are enhanced by its ability to provide unique horizontal, or eye-level, visibility for ground forces that lookdown UAVs cannot, giving troops a more comprehensive view of their targets and operational environment.
Next month, a wholly owned subsidiary of the San Diego wireless giant Qualcomm will launch Tagg — The Pet Tracker. The $200 system consists of a GPS tracker that clips to existing collars for dogs and cats. Pet owners set up a “Tagg Zone,” or a geo fence, for areas where it’s safe for their pets to play, such as their yard.
When pets venture beyond the zone, their owners will be notified and have the ability to follow their pets’ meanderings on their cell phones.
“It really puts the power into the (pet) owner’s hands,” said David Vigil, president of Snaptracs, the Qualcomm subsidiary behind Tagg. “You don’t have to put up signs anymore or call the shelter and hope the animal is there."
This isn’t a new idea. GPS-based pet tracking systems are available from Spotlight, Garmin and others with features and at prices similar to Tagg’s.
