<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Can you build strength after 40?</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Absolutely!</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many people think that we get weaker as we get older. And it’s true that we’ll all experience some physical decline as we age.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But it’s a fact that strength can be improved at any age, and older adults who train regularly can become incredibly strong. With continued training, they can hold much of that strength very late in life.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think of it like this: If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. And you certainly won’t improve it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">People who are sedentary will start weak and become ever weaker if they don’t train as they age. Similarly, an active person who stops training will grow weaker quickly and then gradually become weaker as years pass.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The flip side is amazing:&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Inactive people who start working out at any age become stronger—often quite quickly at first. As people continue to train, they’ll gradually gain more strength. If they continue working out over their entire lives, they’ll become very strong, and they’ll lose strength due to advanced age at a much slower rate.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These people retain their capabilities later in life even as inactive people around them lose their independence!&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We’ve seen people well over 70 gain strength and dramatically improve function, so if you’re over 40, it’s definitely not too late to start.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="fitness-health-wellness-strength-training-crossfit"><strong>Strength Training Over 40: Three Secrets&nbsp;</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are three tips for gaining strength after 40 (you aren’t “over the hill”):</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">1. You have to work out consistently.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Building strength is about momentum. If you train 2-4 times a week and do the right stuff (see below), you’ll get stronger and stronger. But you can’t work out for a month and then take a month off. If you do, you’ll lose your progress.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">2. You have to do the right things the right way at the right times.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Strength training is a balance of stress and recovery, and you can definitely do too much or too little. Similarly, doing the same things over and over will blunt their effect. You need some variety and something called “progressive overload” to ensure you always make progress. And then you need to make sure you do the movements properly. Don’t stress about all this—our professional coaches take care of everything for you!</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">3.&nbsp;<a href="https://3qfitness.com/nutrition/">Nutrition</a>&nbsp;is important.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can’t drive a vehicle without fuel, and your body won’t become stronger without the right food. Protein is important, and so are vitamins and minerals. Carbs and fats figure into the equation, too. Again, we’re experts and we can tell you how to optimize your nutrition so you get strong!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Seriously, that’s it. When is the last time you had someone pitch you something and you bought it, especially something that wasn’t cheap.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Don’t you want to tell people about your gym and why they should join?”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">No. I don’t want to pitch to anyone or sell to anyone ever. I want to find the right people who fit our culture. Does that mean we’re exclusive? Yes, but not in the way you might be thinking. The right people who fit our culture recognize their need for a coach and value the coaching relationship. The clients we have success with are the ones who value having a coach and are committed to that relationship.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I was recently asked how many of you were aware of my goals as an owner. Would most, or any, of my clients be able to articulate what my coaching philosophy is, or what we as a team focus on? Are you aware that I’m extremely passionate about the emotional impact our coaching program has on our clients, maybe more so than any aspect of our business? I pray everyone who comes into our gym feels at home, grows (emotionally, mentally, physically), feels seen, feels cared for, gains self-confidence, and finds empowerment through health &amp; fitness. That’s what I’ve been called to do.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The last few years have all built to this: health can be simple, even though life is complex. An effective coach can be someone who brings radical life change. The coaching relationship is built on trust and communication. The best coaches know that every client deserves intention, patience, effort, and care.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During March of 2020, we pulled the team together and decided to build a hybrid model of coaching. In that season, we needed to up our game and coach more than just a class if we wanted to survive as a business. We needed to focus on the coaching relationship, creating buy-in from our clients, and delivering results in areas that we weren’t able to in a 1-hour class.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What came from that was something we hoped for but didn’t expect. Our clients, you, bought in like never before. You let us build stronger relationships with you and coach you outside of class with more frequent check-ins, accessory programs, a better accountability system, revamped nutrition coaching, and we even had a lifestyle coaching case study. We brought back clinics, special events, and education pieces.&nbsp;<strong>The data showed the more touch points we had, whether it be from check-ins or additional services, yielded better performance metrics. More than that, clients were happier and less stressed. Wild.&nbsp;</strong>Our reviews became less about the facility and overwhelmingly about how people felt, the relationships they built, and the growth they saw in themselves.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The problem is figuring out a way to repeat that success for everyone, but here’s the thing…&nbsp;<em>You are all different.&nbsp;</em>After years of looking at our data and pursuing more education and mentorship, I’ve concluded the common element to the success of our clients was our approach.&nbsp;<strong>It all stemmed from asking better questions and finding the minimum effective dose for our client’s problems. Sounds simple, but it’s fairly complex, like you!</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All of our clients will get personalized coaching from their Primary Coach. Your coach will investigate your effectiveness in core behaviors that directly impact your performance and then prescribe the minimum effective dose, the most direct and simple solution, to improve your low-performing area. We’ll do this by meeting on a more regular basis, every 30-45 days, and tracking everything we can (within reason). Below are the areas we’ll be focusing on and some info on how they affect your performance.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>● Fitness/Training</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">○ This is the program we write as a gym, and your coach is going to personalize it for you in our new app “True Coach.” Everyone at our gym has a Primary Coach who can completely customize your daily workouts based on your performance, goals, and needs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>● Nutrition</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">○&nbsp; Culturally, this is tough for most people to grasp; meal prepping, eating simple or boring meals, and tracking. But the main idea is helping to change the relationship we have with food. Food is fuel.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>● Sleep</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">○&nbsp; We’ll look at things like sleep etiquette. Are you tracking your sleep? What variables are impacting your sleep? Maybe it’s work? Kids? Personally, coaching on my sleep has been a game-changer.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We are committing to delivering the most effective way to approach your health. You might notice I’m not calling us a CrossFit gym often but a Coaching Program. Why? We aren’t turning our back on CrossFit; we just aren’t putting ourselves in the box of Thrusters and Burpees to solve our clients’ problems. We are still an affiliate and will continue to be. We believe in the efficacy of CrossFit and always will, but we are a Coaching Program. We are not a gym. We aren’t a box. We are a team of professional coaches who coach the whole client.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’ve experienced this change slowly for the last few years. But now, we are in it. You are part of the next chapter of 3Q Fitness.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>I love this tik-tok tag line on fit-fluencer’s posts. There’s not a singular movement or exercise that is going to maximize fat loss. The more meaningful question to ask is: “Why am I not seeing the results I want?”</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I can rap on this for a while, but this is why we pair you with a coach and our process is designed around the individual. Anyone that walks into our gym in Garland gives varying degrees of surface level answers when we ask why they came: “I wanted the best gym near me, I wanted to find personal training near me, I wanted to find the best fitness program to get healthy, I’m looking to burn fat and gain muscle, etc.” Great, move your body every day for 30-60mins, eat nutrient rich foods, sleep 10 hours a night, and avoid anything that moves you further away from health. It’s simple. Right?</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not everyone can execute that on their own, we aren’t wired that way. That’s where a coach steps in to help identify the missing pieces or the things that might cause overload. Some clients need structure, accountability, or the occasional encouragement to stay consistent. Some clients need eyes on them to keep them moving safe or even to keep them from pushing too hard. Some clients need the full suite of available coaching: nutrition plan, habit coaching, personalized programming, one on one session, and regular goal check ins. Everyone benefits from a coach.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A coach should help you uncover the “why” behind your investment in health and fitness. The more trust you build with your coach the easier it will be to dig into the depth of that answer and harness the power from that knowledge. Both client and coach can lean into the “why” and let that serve as the direction all goals flow, ensuring that all energy and time invested are going to be used purposefully. It’s at that point when your mindset towards your workouts shift from, “How can I get six pack abs before summer,” to something deeply meaningful like, “I know that being my fittest is the best way to keep me around for my kids, or my grandkids.” Of those two “why’s” only one has the power to radically transform habits.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The homework for you is this:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Identify what all of your goals are for your fitness, health, relationship, finances, etc, what version of you are you working towards? Describe that person.</li>



<li>Think of people who you admire, list out a few</li>



<li>Identify the habits that those people you admire have that you don’t and would like to</li>



<li>Identify the habits that you have which are getting in the way of being the person you described earlier</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Big facts. I’ve been a Department Head at a high end luxury gym, often this chain is referred to as the “Best Gym in Dallas” and when you walk in it’s hard to argue that the facilities at this franchise are exceptional. Saunas, pools, hot tubs, cold tubs, steam sauna, steam shower, massage therapists on site, high end salon with professional stylists, personal trainers, top of the line equipment, hot yoga, rock climbing, basketball, tennis facilities, healthy cafe, and they’re open almost all day and night. What’s the deal? Why am I saying this ain’t it…</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’re on your own. Even if you have a trainer, they are focused on getting you in and out, it’s a numbers game. They aren’t changing your habits, perspective towards health, or solving the real issues. Do people get fit there, absolutely some people who are self-motivated and know what they’re doing can succeed in getting lean just about anywhere they train. Do people get radical life change that impacts them in a profound way, changing their relationships, their self-view, and what it means to truly be healthy? Not often, and not on purpose.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At 3Q Fitness | CrossFit Garland we’ve dedicated the last 15 years to developing coaches. We like our gym, we have a facility we love, we keep it clean, we update what we feel would improve the member experience, and we like to think our efforts as coaches give us a bonus label as the best gym in Garland. That’s simply a byproduct of intently focusing on having the best coaching program in Garland. Our aim is to identify and address what’s broken. That’s not to say the athlete is broken, but we can assume that anyone who walks into the gym is seeking to change something. Self-improvement is something we can rally behind. “Broken” would be the habits that conflict with the improvement we seek. That’s where a coach will always be more impactful than the sauna or steam shower after “Leg Day” at a top tier facility spent awkwardly scrolling instagram and praying nobody is looking at you.</p>
