Deepavali (also: Depawali, Dipavali, Dewali, Diwali, Divali, Dipotsavi, Dipapratipad ) marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year according to the Lunar Calendar. It literally translated means 'Row of Lights' (from Sanskrit: dipa = lamp / awali = row, line). It celebrates the victory of goodness over evil, light over darkness, and ushers in the new year. For this event people are cleaning their houses and wear new clothes. Diwali is a 5 days festival as Dhanteras, Choti Diwali, Badi (Main) Diwali, Padwa and Bhaiduj. There are many different names for the days of Diwali in different regions of India (South & North India, East & West India) and in the different languages spoken in that regions (i.e. Hindi, Urdu, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Bengali). During Deepavali people pray to Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth, light, prosperty and wisdom, but also to Lord Ganesha, the 'Remover of Obstacles' or the 'Lord of Beginnings'. Deepavali celebrations take place in many countries in the world. On the first day of the Diwali festival people pray, eating a special breakfast made of many different foods. The Hindu Goddess Lakshmi's statue and images are carried through the streets in processions. There are various legends and stories about the Diwali festival. The story of Bali, Emergence of Laxmi, Krisna Narakasur Fight, Victory of Rama over Ravana and many more. Dipa Lights (also called Diwali Diyas, Kandils, Ghee Lamps, Parvati Ganesha Lamps) that are made of clay, fueled with Oil from Coconuts or Mustard or Ghee (clarified butter), the wick made of cotton wool, are placed outside of houses, on floors and doorways. During Diwali festival doorways are hung with torans of mango leaves and marigolds. Deepavali Mela is being celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains & Buddhists. On the day of Deepavali people exchange gifts, using firecrackers, making fireworks & bonfires, having festive meals. The Indian Festival of Lights takes place after the monsoon season when the weather is pleasant. Diwali Melas (fairs) are held throughout India and the celebrations abroad.

HOLI HAI... Come holi and the streets will reverberate with the chants of Holi hai... Colours will fill the atmosphere as people throw abeer and gulal in the air showing great joy and mirth in the arrival of this Spring Festival. Holi marks the end of the winter gloom and rejoices in the bloom of the spring time. It is the best time and season to celebrate; Holi provides this opportunity and people take every advantage of it. Days before Holi, the markets get flooded with the colours of every hues. This aptly sets the mood of the people till the actual day of Holi. It is such a colourful and joyous sight to watch huge piles of bright red, magenta, pink, green and blue every where on the streets. Buying those colours seems as you are bringing joys and colour to your home and into your life. Children take special delight in the festival and demand every colour in loads. They have so many plans in their mind. They have to be the first to apply colour to Mama, Papa, siblings and a big bunch of friends in their colony. Nobody could miss being coloured by them and of course, they need colour for that. These days it is easy to buy colours from the market but still some people do take up the task of making colours at home, usually from flowers of tesu and palash. These home made colours, have a special fragrance of love in them. The other option is to buy gulal which comes in bright shades of pink, magenta, red, yellow and green. 'Abeer' is made of small crystals or paper like chips of mica. This is mixed with the gulal for a rich shine. Mischievous ones, however, go for silver and gold paints on which no colour could be applied. Whatever be the choice of colour, nobody remains in their original texture at the end of the play. And everybody takes delight looking at the other. Really, the other name of the festival is FUN. And, it is not just children, but the young and the old alike who take delight in this joyous festival of colours. Seniors too, move in their tolis. Their enthusiasm is at times greater than that of their children as they forget the bars of age and follow their hearts. To youth, holi gives a chance to explore the heights of their enthusiasm as they climb the human pyramids to break the pot of buttermilk and to express their love to their beloved by applying colour. For, Holi knows no bars, everybody feels it is their right to enjoy and enjoy they do. Songs, dance, drinks, food everything goes in excess when it is time for Holi. It can be said, "Life turns Colourful" when it is time for Holi.

Early life

Ravindra Jain was born blind in a village- Lohariya, situated in district Banswara, Rajasthan, India. He got his education from well-known Sanskrit scholar, Pandit Indramani Jain a renowned Ayurvedacharya of his time and his wife Kiran Jain. He is the 3rd kin among 7 brothers and 1 sister. Among His elder brother Pandit Mahendra Kumar Jain a renowned Ayurvedic Physician,Dr.D.K Jain a renowned personality among its community was Director of the Times Group, and a well reputed judge.His Younger Brothers Shri Manindra Jain runs a very successful construction and real estate business in and around New delhi region. It was Ravindra Jain's parents that first decided to teach him music. He took his basic training from Pandit G.L. Jain, Pandit Janardhan Sharma, and Pandit Nathu Ram. Later, he went to Calcutta and ultimately landed in Bombay to compose music for films and serials.

Career

Ravindra Jain is one of the most notable of the Hindi music directors in the 1970s and early 1980s, for hit films such as Chor Machaye Shor (1974), Geet Gaata Chal (1975), Chitchor (1976) and Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se (1978). Along with composing music, he also wrote the lyrics for many of his famous songs. During the recording sessions for the film Saudagar Ravindra Jain's father died. However, Jain did not leave the studio until the song recordings were finalized giving utmost importance to his work.

Association with Yesudas

Jain is credited for bringing south Indian singing sensation Dr. K. J. Yesudas to Hindi movies, in singing in many of his movies in the 1970s and 1980s. Together they sung some memorable songs like 'Oo goriya re' (Naiyya), 'Beeti hui raat ki' (Ayyash), and 'Gori tera gaon' (Chitchor). It is said that Jain was so fascinated by the way Yesudas sang his songs that Yesudas' face was the first he wanted to see if he ever received his vision. Jain has worked on songs after his liaison with Yesudas, but he has failed to attain the pinnacle of glory he achieved with the master singer during the 1970s.

Television career.

Ravindra Jain also composed music for many TV serials, mainly under the banner of Sagar Films (Pvt. Ltd.), throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. Ravindra Jain provided bhajans and songs for many of Ramanand Sagar's popular TV serials, beginning with Dada Dadi ki Kahaniyaan, then moving on to one of the two Indian epics Ramayan (TV series) and its follow up Luv Kush. Along with two South Indian composers, K.V. Mahadevan and K. Pukazhenti, Ravindra Jain composed 2 to 3 semi-classical songs for later episodes of Bollywood actress Hema Malini's TV Serial Noopur and the complete soundtrack for the show Women of India- Urvashi. Hema Malini continued collaborating with Ravindra Jain as composer for her dance ballets--Mahalakshmi, Durga, Nritya Malika, Ramayan, Krishna Balram, and Radha Krishna. Jain continued his collaboration with Ramanand Sagar in TV serials such as Shri Krishna, Alif Laila, Itihaas ki Prem Kahaniyaan based on historical love stories of India, Tilism-E-Hoshruba, Jai Ganga Maiya, Jai Mahalaxmi, Shree Brahma Vishnu Mahesh, Sai Baba, and Jai Maa Durga. Ravindra Jain also provided excellent music for producer/director Sanjay Khan on TV serials Jai Hanuman and Maha Kavya Mahabharat also called Sanjay Khan's Mahabharat. In 2008, Jain composed for Sagar Arts's remake of Ramayan (2008 TV series), Mahima Shani Dev ki on NDTV Imagine, and Dheeraj Kumar's serial Jai Maa Vaishno Devi on Channel 9X. In 2009, Jain composed the title song for Sagar Arts's new TV serial on Colors (India TV channel) called Sarvopari Shree Swaminarayan Bhagwan. Next, Jain composed for the currently airing religious series Bharat ke Mahaan Sant. Jain is currently the composer for Imagine TV's new mythological series based on the Hindu god Krishna's adult life called Dwarkadheesh bhagwaan shree krishn which started airing on July 4, 2011. Jain has featured as Mahaguru in the Indian music reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009 and today devotes his time participating in Kavi Sammelans, Mushairaas, and all literary, cultural, social, political, and religious activities. His collection of shayaris titled Ujaalon Ka Silsila in Urdu received Sahitya Award from Uttar Pradesh Hindi-Urdu Sahitya Award Committee, Lucknow, on 6 June 1997 presented by Romesh Bhandari, Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Ravindra Jain also received many prestigious awards like Raaseshwar, Sur Singer, FilmFare Award, Swami Haridas, Youth National, Ashirwad, Adhar Shila, Uptron, Priyadarshini, Jaycees, Lions, Indigo '90, Rotary, Bengal Film Journalists Association Award, Uttar Pradesh Film Patrakar Sangh Award, Sangeet Gyaneshwar Award, Almost Faqir, Sangeet Samrat & as well as honours by many National, International, Social Cultural & Film Institutions. Ravindra Jain also wrote his autobirgraphy titled, Sunehre Pal.

Political affiliation

Ravindra Jain joined Congress party in 2004.

Personal life

Ravindra Jain met his mother-in-law, Mrs. Nirmala Jain, in Delhi while attending a promotion event for the film Saudagar. Soon after, Nirmala Jain's daughter, Divya Jain, insisted upon only marrying Ravindra Jain or nobody else. Ravindra Jain is married to poetess Divya Jain and they have a son named Aayushman Jain.

The nation never took Gandhi ji seriously. After Independence, none of his major thoughts-basic education, social justice through decentralization and empowerment of the peasantry with gram swarajya ,were taken up entirely. Most of the people in India know that Gandhiji had four sons, but no body can notify their names. Why? Because Gandhiji was not the father of only four sons he was the father of nation. In the present day this generation talks all vague and erroneous construal about him. That's not astounding. The generation, which has not seen Gandhi ji, can natter with all the immoral annotations. Talking about Gandhi's inheritance we can segregate it into two major categories. He was known for his moral, spiritual and political ideas. What ever he thought was not followed completely. He gave his Political inheritance to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and showed him the way of Socialism, socialism in India. He dreamt of Gram Swaraj, seven beautiful systems of Panchatyat and social justice to decentralization. Gandhi understood the divisive nature of the Indian society and devised a notion of composite identity, which could be transferred to modern political structures. He said about himself that" I am an old Socialist". But what went wrong. It was Nehru who was very much involved towards Russian socialism and brought 5 year Plan in India and adopted that Socialism, not Gandhi's Socialism, but Russian Socialism. It is accepted and could be seen very clearly, that preliminary point of Indian economic planning was wrong. Unfortunately, the process of industrialization was not rooted in Indian conditions. A large part of the modern industry, which left millions untouched, came up based on western parameters,'' Stating the ''totality of society'' was Gandhi's main concern, the Nehruvian says that as the country moved ahead with economic reforms and technology, it was important to carry along the vast hinterland of agriculture, artisans and inter-mediate technology. The nation bears little resemblance to Gandhiji's vision of it. The swadeshi mantra, which inspired the freedom struggle, has been all but dumped, the nation-state born out of non-violence now boasts of weapons of mass destruction, and politics is more a means for self-service than for the nation. Yes, all of Gandhi's ideas seem to have been lost in a warren. While the Congress under Jawaharlal Nehru took a different path from what Gandhi advocated, Gandhian institutions and thinkers were also to blame for the loss of his legacy. Gandhi was a human being and he wanted to be treated like one. He was not infallible. He would often say, ''I am earthly and of the earth.'' While Gandhi was constantly evolving, his followers failed to do so. On the other surface, when we witness Gandhi's moral and spiritual inheritance, Vinobha Bhave and Jayprakash Narayan could be seen standing like an immense supporting pillar of Gandhi's Sarvodaya. He regarded the power of the people superior than power of the state. When Vinobha Bhave met Gandhi ji his course of life was changed. His involvement with Gandhiji's constructive programmes related to Khadi, village industries, new education, sanitation and hygiene also kept on increasing. In 1940 he was chosen by Gandhi to be the first Individual Satyagrahi (an Individual standing up for Truth instead of a collective action) against the British rule. Who can forget the great example of Sarvodaya of the chambal dacoit surrender? The way, what Acharya Vinobha Bhave in 1961 and Jayaprakash Narayan in 1973 adopted, secured the surrender of a large number of Chambal Valley dacoits in Madhya Pradesh.Death of Vinobha bhave and Jayprakash wrecked up the soul of Sarvodaya and Gandhi's thoughts. A new generation was ahead which had never seen Gandhi. Every one simply says about the partition. Gandhi and Gaffar Khan opposed the partition of India upto the last second. You know what Gandhi told the leaders including Pandit Nehru and Sardar Patel? They had said, everywhere violence was taking place. Gandhi observed. "I don't take pride in my faith. I do not think that there is a greater devotee of non-violence than myself. But mine is the non-violence of the brave and not of the cowards." He said: " I am committed to non-violence. I am against civil war, I am against fratricidal war, I am against Hindu-Muslim riots, but the blood while taking crucial decisions does not frighten me… I have a feeling of compassion." When the final decision of the partition of India was to be taken by the Congress Working Committee, Gandhi said: " I think I should leave", and the President said: " I think there is no sense in asking Gandhi not to leave. At least his views are well known. He does not share our perception." Gandhi had said: "There is still one more opportunity for a struggle. Be prepared to fight. In 1942 you gave me the authority to lead the struggle. I gave the call to the British to quit India and then I called upon the people to do or die. This old man has still the capacity to do or die. Please stand erect and be prepared for one more struggle. We shall retain free India as a united nation. But probably you have lost the will to fight. You may go your own way." And during the musings, before his prayer, once he said:" This old man is of no use to them. Oh! God pick me up as early as possible", Gandhi was assassinated. Gandhi is dead but his courage and compassion, the values for which he lived, will never be erased. Gandhi can never be irrelevant. So long as freedom of the individual, gender equality, social justice, tolerance towards all and clean politics are the goals of any society, Gandhi would continue to be relevant.

Rakhi: The Thread of Love

In India, festivals are the celebration of togetherness, of being one of the family. Raksha Bandhan is one such festival that is all about affection, fraternity and sublime sentiments. It is also known as Raksha Bandhan which means a 'bond of protection'. This is an occasion to flourish love, care, affection and sacred feeling of brotherhood. Not a single festival in India is complete without the typical Indian festivities, the gatherings, celebrations, exchange of sweets and gifts, lots of noise, singing and dancing. Raksha Bandhan is a regional celebration to celebrate the sacred relation between brothers and sisters. Primarily, this festival belongs to north and western region of India but soon the world has started celebrating this festival with the same verse and spirit. Rakhi has become an integral part of those customs.

An insight of Rakhi Rituals

On the day of Rakhi, sisters prepares the pooja thali with diya, roli, chawal, rakhi thread and sweets. The ritual begins with a prayer in front of God, then the sister ties Rakhi to her brother and wishes for his happiness and well-being. In turn, the brother acknowledge the love with a promise to stand by his sister through all the good and bad times. Sisters tie Rakhi on the wrist of their brothers amid chanting of mantras, put roli and rice on his forehead and pray for his well-being. She bestows him with gifts and blessings. In turn, brothers also wish her a good life and pledges to take care of her. He gives her a return gift. The gift symbolizes the physical acceptance of her love, reminder of their togetherness and his pledge. The legends and the reference in history repeated, the significance of the festival is emphasized.

Unconditional Bond of Love

Raksha bandhan has been celebrated in the same way with the same traditions for many years. Only the means have changed with the changing lifestyle to make the celebration more elaborate and lively. This day has an inherent power that pulls the siblings together. The increasing distances evoke the desire to be together even more. All brothers and sisters try to reach out to each other on this auspicious day. The joyous meeting, the rare family get-together, that erstwhile feeling of brotherhood and sisterhood calls for a massive celebration. For everyone, it is an opportunity to reunion and celebrate. People also share tasty dishes, wonderful sweets and exchange gifts. It is a time to share their past experiences also. For those who are not able to meet each other, rakhi cards and e-rakhis and rakhis through mails perform the part of communicating the rakhi messages. Hand made rakhis and self-made rakhi cards are just representation of the personal feelings of the siblings.

Chhath (also called Dala Chhath) is an ancient Hindu festival dedicated to the Hindu Sun God, Surya, also known as Surya Shashti.[1] The Chhath Puja is performed in order to thank Surya for sustaining life on earth and to request the granting of certain wishes. The Sun, considered the god of energy and of the life-force, is worshiped during the Chhath fesival to promote well-being, prosperity and progress. In Hindu mythology, Sun worship is believed to help cure a variety of diseases, including leprosy, and helps ensure the longevity and prosperity of family members, friends, and elders. The rituals of the festival are rigorous and are observed over a period of four days. They include holy bathing, fasting and abstaining from drinking water (Vratta), standing in water for long periods of time, and offering prashad (prayer offerings) and aragh to the setting and rising sun. Although it is observed most elaborately in Bihar, Jharkhand and the Terai regions of Nepal in modern times, and is more prevalent in areas where migrants from those areas have a presence, it is celebrated in all regions and major urban centers in India. The festival is celebrated in the regions including but not exclusive to the northeast region of India, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Gujarat, Delhi, Mumbai and Mauritius.
