My Home Town Nagercoil!

I love my hometown Nagercoil which is situated in the southern most tip of India. Nagercoil is a beautiful town surrounded by greens and beaches and lot of tea and rubber estates. It is also in the border of kerala and once upon a time belonged to the state of Kerala and now it is owned by the state of TamilNadu. Lot of keralites live there and so the language spoken there would be a mixture of malayalam and tamil which is very sweet to hear.

This picture was taken at Sanguthurai beach. Sangu is shell and because of this statue it is called sanguthurai beach.

Sanguthorai Beach is surrounded by coconut tree farms and cane trees and it is a feast for eyes to view the beach from the coconut tree farms.

Infact there are lot of places to see around Nagercoil. Like Kanyakumari which is 30 mins drive from Nagercoil, Tiuparappu a waterfall near Nagercoil and thottipalam a bridge built over a river which is really amazing to see and it is really a feast to eyes to see from that bridge the greens and the river below and the bridge is very narrow and feels like swinging in the air. There are many more beaches around like muttam, sanguthurai and sotthavilai.

I have lot of sweet memories about my home town and my house where I spent my childhood days. Where me and my bro used to fight and sometimes also laugh together and it would be a fun when my cousin brothers and sisters come over to my place on vacations and everyday go to some beach or waterfalls and spend the whole day there :)

"Koonthankulam"My Ancestral Home!!!!

Yeah! Koonthankulam is my ancestral home! It is a beautiful village full of greens situated in the district of Tirunelveli!

I have lot of sweet memories about Koonthankulam! when we were kids we used to spend our summer vacations there! We used to have lot of fun playing around as we are 9 cousin sisters and brothers! From morning till evening only fun and also some friendly fights! :P I really miss that good old days!

Koonthankulam is also a bird sanctuary and lot of foreigners and people all around from India visit this place! Farming is the main occupation held out there! The people there lead a very simple life and very down to earth!!

Speaking about my ancestrol home it was built some 150 years back and looks like a palace! My mom has six sisters and a brother and all their marriages were held in the home itself as it has a huge hall similar to a marriage hall! There is a temple of lord Krishna which was built by my great grand father and still maintained by my uncle and aunts!

The picts below is the hall of my ancestral home where all my aunts and uncle's marriages were held and where we all cousin brothers and sisters spent our vacations playing shuttle and lot more during our vacations!!

Now many of the Tamil movies are shot in my ancestral home and the house has become very popular because of the movies shot there! People who come to see the birds also visit the house to saying that they wanted to see the house where the movie was shot!

I'm really proud to be one of the grand daughter of that house and love all my aunts uncle and my 3 cousin sisters Vidhya, Sridevi, Anushiya and my cousin brothers Ramesh anna, Rajesh, Mahesh, Arvind and also my brother Suresh! We all are married now and well settled and all have kids but still make it a point to meet once a year in summer vacations at my ancestral home! :) To know more about Koonthakulam visit here

GOING ON A VACATION!!!!

Yay!!! My son's holidays have started and its time for me to go to my mom's place Nagercoil on vacation! Excited!!!! I've been waiting for this day since one year. Every year I go to my mom's place in the month of may stay there for a month with my son and have loads of fun!!! :)This picture was taken at my mom's house! My son in his bicycye! was taken long back!

When I think of my home town Nagercoil my memories (ofcourse sweet) go back when I was a kid! having silly fights with my bro, having fun with my cousins, my grandma's place which is a small village and also a bird sanctuary! and lot more.

I simply love the pattern of blouse this gorgeous lady wearing with this sari!! A deep U cut at the back of the blouse makes it more elegant!! Normally I wear this style of blouse with kanchipuram sari.

I can see most of the visitors who visits my blog are interested in kanchipuram saris. This made me write another post about kanchipuram saris. No wonder women are attracted by kanchipuram saris as it adds grace and elegance to the woman who wears kanchipuram saris. I make it a point to buy at least 4 saris every year, one for dipawali, one for pongal a festival for Tamils, one for varalakshmi vridham a fasting usually made by all the married women for the long life of their husbands. The fourth one just like that say for our wedding anniversary or my birth day I used to buy. I live in Noida a place in the northern part of India where one can hardly find any shop for kancipuram saris. Delhi is only 2-3 kms far from Noida here I am saying the border of Delhi from Noida and in Delhi there is Nalli silks a popular shop for kanchipuram saris. Nalli has 3 branches I guess in Delhi. The main one is in the south extension market, the second one in cannaught place and I am not that sure where the third one is. But I used to make all my purchases at Chennai or at Tirunelveli when I go there for summer vacations. Rmkv and Pothys are very popular in Tirunelveli, in fact they opened their first showrooms at Tirunelveli only. Rmkv is like our family shop because for generations we purchase kanchipuram saris from this shop for all the special occasions in our family. My grand mother and all my aunts are very superstitious and they believe that everything will be perfect and nothing wrong will happen if they make their purchases from Rmkv. But I am not that superstitious all though I like Rmkv when I visit Chennai I go to other shops also. If you ask me all the shops are good to buy kanchipuram saris. Some of my favourite shops among them are sundari silks, palam silks, tulsi silks. In sundari silks one can get plain kanchipuram saris without any zari or designs in very attractive colour combinations. One can buy these saris and customize them according to their taste. One can customize it with zardoshi work, kundan work, sequins work and also with some simple yet elegant embroidery work. I heard lot of ladies in Chennai are doing these work from the home itself as a part time job and some of them have taken it seriously and doing it very professionally also. My sister in law who stays in chennai said that in Sundari silks itself they are doing these works on our request but Iam not very sure of that. Today the latest trend in kanchipuram saris are with a broad border in both sides. It is called muppaham pattu in Tamil. Muppaham means three parts in equal size. These saris look very nice but I feel it suits only for women who are tall and slim. For healthy women like me :) I think it makes us look more healthy :)) and also short. It is not wrong in following the latest trend but I feel that it should also suit the personality of the individual. If you have a girl child then please do not miss the kanchipuram pattu paavadai (silk skirt) . In this skirt your child will definitely look like an angel that I can guarantee you. If you have teenage daughter then make them wear the kanchipuram silk skirt and half sari (Dhaavani) with their hair plaited or if they have very short hair one can try french plaits and with some simple accessories they will look gorgeous for sure. I don't have a girl child so no way I can try these things but whenever I see these silk skirts and outfits for girls I really feel very sad because I don't have a girl child. RASAM (INDIAN SOUP)

A small intro about Rasam.

Rasam is a popular soup in South India. It is had with rice and some fried curry. In Restaurants it is served as Mulligatawny Soup. You must be familiar with this name if you visit restaurants often and if you like spicy soups. The name is actually derived from Tamil which is spoken in Tamil Nadu a state in South India and where I belong to. Mulligatawny is mulaguthanni . mulagu is wholepeppercorn and thanni is water which means pepper water. Rasam is supposed to be very good for health as it contains lot of spices like wholepepper, corianderseeds, cuminseeds, which are very good for stomach and stomach disorders. In North India Rasam is very popular in restaurants people have it in glass with papad.You can know more about rasam here. There are many ways of making rasam but I’m going to give the traditional recipe for making Rasam which is normally made at our home. First you need to make Rasam powder.

POTATO CURRY (FRY)
Ingredients for making Rasam powder(serves3-4)
Coriander seeds - 1Tbsp
Cumin Seed - ¼ Tbsp
Yellow lentils - 1/4Tbsp
Whole black pepper corns - 1/2Tbsp
Asaefotida powder - a pinch
Whole Red Chillies – 2
Put all the ingredients in a small jar of mixer and powder it coarsely. It can also be dry roasted for few minutes till it gives a nice aroma and then can be powdered. But should be careful while roasting . It should not get burnt. You can get informations about lentils here
TAMARIND

Ingredients for making Rasam
Tomatoes medium sized - 2
Tamarind - size of small gooseberry. Soak it in ½ cup of water before 30 mins ( you can avoid tamarind and can squezz juice of a lemon and add at the last)
Garlic - 4-5 pods (crushed)
Turmeric powder - ¼ Tsp
Coriander Leaves - a small bunch (chopped finely)

Ingredients for tempering
Ghee - 1Tsp
Mustard seeds- ½ Tsp
Curry leaves - a sprig
Whole red chilly- 1
Tempering:
Take a small pan add ghee to it and when it becomes hot add mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds starts spluttering add curry leaves and whole red chilly and switch off the stove.

METHOD:
Take a pan and add a glass of water and bring it to boil. When the water boils add the mashed tomatoes, turmeric powder and let it cook for 5-8 minutes. 2. Now squeeze the tamarind soaked in water and filter the water once and add it to the cooked tomatoes and again bring to a boil. 3. Add another 2-3 cups of hot water to it to make it watery let it boil for 10-12 minutes on a medium flame. 4. Now add the Rasam powder and crushed garlic to the boiling rasam and let it boil for another 5 minutes till it gives a nice aroma. 6. Now add salt as per taste and switch off the stove. Add the tempering to it and garnish with fresh chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice and fried potatoes or have it hot as soup in a bowl.

If you are using lemon instead of tamarind skip the step 2 and add the juice of a lemon switching off the flame.

Hello Friends I have shifted my other blog veggie veg to this blog!! Yep I have imported my veggie blog to this blog as I hardly find time to update my recipe blog.I love cooking and I love to try new recipes every now and then at home. For generations we are vegetarians and we live a very healthy life having only veggies. But my generation and next generation have started having non-veg also but at home I never cook non-veg. My husband and my son have meat when we go to restaurants. They also ask me to have but I could not..I’m happy with veggie food. I have given our traditional vegetarian recipes which we make everyday at home. Coconut and tamarind plays an important role in everyday south Indian cooking. You can find my recipes Here. I have deleted my other blog veggie veg..sorry my followers of veggie blog but I could not find any other solution. First I thought of manually transferring every post from veggie blog to this one..but thanks to my friends Arunbasillal of million clues and Chethan of cheth studios who gave me the suggestion of exporting veggie blog and importing to this one and it hardly took 10 minutes to do that WOW!!! Puberty Tradition In South India

Do you know about the puberty tradition that is followed in India ?? Yes we have a tradition which we even follow now when a girl reaches her puberty!! Here I’m talking about the tradition that has been followed in the South India where I belong to. Let me tell about the tradition followed when a girl reaches puberty. Almost the same custom is followed even now but it slightly vary as per the community

When a girl reaches puberty she is treated like a princess!! When I reached my puberty I was at my grandmother’s place. The first thing done is whatever the time it is the girl is supposed to take a bath. Then she is made to sit in a separate room where only ladies are allowed not even my cousin brothers and my brother are allowed lol :)) Then all the relatives are informed and they visit the girl with sweets and gifts the following days. The girl is kept in a separate room like this for 15 days.The girl is given nutritious food on those days. Everyday the girl is dressed like an angel. My grandmother used to give me raw egg with gingelly oil at 4.00am in the morning on those days (yuks) I feel like throwing away if I think of that. My parents grandparents are all vegetarians but on those 15 days I was forced to have raw egg as it is supposed to be good for health (That is what my grandmother used to say:p).

Then on the 16Th day all friends and relatives are invited and some rituals are performed by the priest . The girl is decorated like a bride on that day with new sari,jewelleries and made to sit in front of relatives and friends and the priest does some pooja(prayers) and then the girl is given a bath with neem leaves and turmeric powder mixed in the water and then she is again made to wear new sari and made to sit in front of relatives and friends and the elders bless the girl and give gifts.Then with a great lunch the function comes to an end .

But these days girls refuse to inform about their puberty to friends and relatives and the rituals are performed on the 7th day itself only with some very close relatives or in some cases no one is informed or invited and the priest does the rituals at home in front of family members only. But some are still following the tradition and a big ceremony is held. I think this custom must have originated long before when child marriages prevailed and by informing relatives and friends and by holding a big ceremony all are informed that the girl is now ready for marriage. That must have continued and now have become a tradition. What is the tradition followed in your country or place my friends? What all do you do when a girl reaches puberty? Pictures Of Colourful Flowers !!

These are the pictures I took from our apartment park. February and March are the season of flowers here in Delhi and Noida and the whole city is filled with beautiful and colourful flowers. There is a place called Mughal Garden which is situated inside the president of India's residence and it is opened for public for 10-15 days in the month of February and the whole place is filled with very rare and beautiful flowers. Twice we had gone there but we missed this year.

On valentine's day I'm really surprised when my friend Gee of Happy Memories gave me the best mom award !!! whatelse can make a mom happy ? I was speechless when Gee told me that she is giving the best mom award for me.. Thank you so much Gee for considering me for this award.

Another surprise came when Chethan of Chethstudios told me that he is giving me the best mom award from his blog!!! I have to tell about cheth here. He is my first friend I got here in the blogosphere when I started blogging. Now I know him for almost 3-4 months. He had helped me in many ways right from getting me a new template for my blog, installing tag cloud, and he only gave me the book marking icons that you see at the end of each post. Not only that I cannot mention all the help he did for me here because there is a very very long list. He is a very talented young 21 year old guy who designs icons, wallpapers, gadgets almost everything and he is also good at animation !!! the best mom award he gave me is an animated badge designed by him. I asked him 'how do you know I'm a good mom?' he replied ' you give lot of advises eventhough we dont want to hear and only good moms can do that' LOL :))

My best experience of being a mom is when I carried my son on my womb for 9 months. At that time I had hypertension so I had to go for a C section because suddenly the movement of the baby inside my womb stopped. I was given a full anaesthesia during the C section and as soon as my concious returned my mom showed me my baby. I asked my mom is everything alright with the baby and she said yes and I hugged and kissed my son for the first time that was the best experience I had and I cannot forget that moment in my whole life and all mothers cannot forget the moment when they first saw their baby!!!

I Had A Chat With Spirit !!

When I was 15 years old I chatted with spirit!! yes you heard it correct chatted with ghost. This happened when I had completed my 10Th grade . I had given the board exams and was enjoying holidays at home. I used to read lot of books and I'm really curious and interested reading articles about spirits and dead people.

In one of the books I saw an interesting article about speaking with spirits through board. I found it very interesting and thought why shouldn't I try this.. yeah I'm gonna try this tonight after everyone had gone to sleep I told myself. We had two maids at our home who are only 2 years elder to me and they are like friends to me. I discussed with them and we fixed 11Pm to put our plans to action after my parents and my brother had gone to sleep. If my mom came to know about this then all gone and she will never allow me to sleep in my own room.

The time came and we kept everything ready to chat with the ghost. A table. chalk piece, camphor and a medium sized lid. Our maids don't know English so I started writing alphabets in a circle then numbers. In the middle I wrote yes in one side and no in the other side. These are the instructions they had given in the book. Then we lighted the camphor in the table and before it went off we covered it with a lid and me and one of the maid servant kept our index finger over the lid and started calling the spirit we called the spirit with due respect and told if you have come then show us by moving the lid towards the word yes. For about 10 minutes there was no movements and then the lid started moving and went to the word yes. We were thrilled, our heart beat raised a kind of mixed emotions.

Then I started asking questions like are you a male or female and when I asked the lid starts moving and first went to the letter M and then came to the middle of the table and went to the letter A and then L and finally E. Male is the answer. Then asked some stupid questions like how did you die and the spirit answered suicide and asked how many percentage will I get in 10Th grade and it said around 75%. Then finally we asked the spirit to go to its own place and to indicate that it has gone we asked the spirit to move the lid to the center of the table and the lid started moving to the center of the table and stopped there. I was really surprised because me and one of our maid were touching the lid with our index finger and our maid does not even know a single letter in English and I could feel the lid moving on its own because we did not put pressure on the lid we were touching it gently. But I got 85% in my 10Th board exam but the spirit said only 75% lol :)) Even today I'm really confused how did the lid move? Did the spirit really come ? or is there any scientific reason behind it ? After a month or so I told about this incident to one of my uncle's and what he said really horrified me. He told a friend of him did a similar thing and the spirit came and when he requested to go back it never went back and they had to call a priest to get rid of the spirit. LOL :)) the spirit that came to our house seems to be a good friendly spirit as it went away when we asked :)) I told my husband that I'm going to write about this and I'm searching for some ghost pictures he replied why search ask your readers to look at your profile picture LOL :)))

Some Cute Things At My Home !!!

I really adore this mobile holder so cute and girlish!!!

I'm really crazy of anna sui purses and wallets and this one is my all time favourite that too in black.

This shopping bag is very colourful and lovely with sequins work all over I bought this bag from a road side shop .

Again a cute heart shaped basket to keep knick knacks. I love the lace around it. Below is a Rajasthani doll I bought from a Rajasthani handicraft fair.

The pouch above is one of my favourites made of tissue material and below is a Rajasthani painting I bought from Jaipur. It looks somewhat similar to Tanjoor painting but costs only 1/4Th its prize.

The lampshade above is made of leather and handpainted and there are holes in it so that when the light is on it looks very colourful and the below pictures are teracotta pieces which I'm really crazy of.

The teracotta tabla above is my favourite and we use it as peg table in our living room and the picture below is an antique brass veena or sitar which is very adorable.

The picture above is a teracotta lamp and the picture below is a Rajasthani lamp shade with mirror work.

The sea shell pen stand above was gifted to me by one of my cousin's.

Satisfaction, Happiness And Friends I Got Through Blogging

I wanted to share with all my blogger friends a little about my personal life. Don't know where to start. I got married at the age of 17. My son was born when I was 19. As soon as I finished my 12Th grade I got married. But no regrets I have got a wonderful husband more than that a good friend, philosopher and guide. He is my great support and encourages me on anything I do.

After my son was born I was so busy looking after him. I did not have much time to spend for myself. But now he is 14 years old and so I have lot of time for myself. Thanks to my husband he only motivated me to start blogging. Basically I don't socialize much ; that is my inborn nature. But I have lot of cousins with whom I'm very close. But blogging has changed my nature. I have become addicted to blogging and I'm really amazed to meet new people through blogging. That too from different countries.

I have got many friends through blogging like Chethan, venkatesh, Rags, Karthik, Aisha, Gee, Duni, Singapore Fountain pen, cuteboo, Carmencaruana from Stumble upon and many more friends. Hope will meet many more friends in the future. They all have become like members of my family because everyday I visit them and communicate with them. Even though I have not seen any of them I never feel like that; I always have a feeling they are known to me for years.

The funny thing is most of the members in my family does not know about blogging. I guess among my cousins I'm the one who does blogging and I love it. I get a kind of satisfaction and happiness when someone comments on my post and nothing can replace that satisfaction and happiness. For me this satisfaction is more important than money. Hope all my blog friends also feel the same way and I love to blog the rest of my life.
