Banks could hit millions of credit card customers with annual fees and higher interest rates as they look for ways of raising more cash.
Experts at PricewaterhouseCoopers say the moves will be necessary to cope with a 50 per cent rise in bad debts on credit cards, expected to be close to £5billion by the end of next year.
PwC predict a personal debt timebomb where as many as 1,000 customers a day will find it necessary to seek help because they cannot cover repayments.

Because of this, they suggest banks will look at new ways to make money.
Many credit cards already carry an annual interest rate of more than 20 per cent on outstanding balances, but this could climb above 30 per cent. Cardholders may also have to pay £25 a year simply to have an account.
The banks are also expected to turn away customers who are not considered profitable.
The PwC study, called 'Precious Plastic', said: 'Levels of write-off of this magnitude have never been experienced by the UK industry before.
'Credit will become more expensive as lenders attempt to claw back revenue lost as a result of economic and regulatory pressures.

Queen leads Remembrance Day ceremony as Britain stops to remember the 201 soldiers killed in Afghanistan

As the Queen today led the nation in paying respect to Britain's war dead in the Remembrance Sunday ceremony, the deaths of two more British soldiers in Afghanistan were announced.
The Monarch, warmly clad in a black coat against the autumn chill, placed the first wreath in the annual event at the Cenotaph in Whitehall.
Skies were threatening but the rain held off as the Queen was followed in placing wreaths by the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Harry, on behalf of the Prince of Wales who is on an official visit to Canada, and Prince William.

t is the first time that Prince Harry, who served in Afghanistan, has placed a wreath on Remembrance Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence announced another two soldiers were killed in Afghanistan. One died on Saturday in a blast near the town of Sangin in central Helmand Province. The other - the 201st to die in battle since the start of operations in 2001 - died in a blast in the same area. He was serving with the 4th Battalion, The Rifles.
Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "It is my sad duty to inform you that earlier today, the morning of Remembrance Sunday, a soldier from 3 Rifles Battle Group was killed as a result of an explosion near Sangin, in Helmand Province."
He continued: "One of our fellow soldiers, one of us, who we remembered this morning and who will not be forgotten."
Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who has suffered from ill health recently, viewed the proceedings from a ground-floor window at the Foreign Office. It is believed to be the first time she has been in the country and not taken part in the ceremony.
More wreaths were also placed by the Duke of York, the Earl of Wessex, the Princess Royal and the Duke of Kent.

The discovery of "miracle" drugs usually takes place deep inside a laboratory. Yet could the latest cure for all ills be something we encounter every day? Mounting evidence suggests vitamin D - produced by the body when exposed to sunlight - could hold the secret.

Several research studies point to the protective effects of vitamin D against everything from heart disease and cancer to multiple sclerosis and diabetes. Two studies published last week claim low levels of vitamin D are linked to kidney disease and stroke. Yet there are rising concerns that many people in Britain may be severely deficient in vitamin D.

Some experts believe thousands of us may need daily vitamin D supplements to bolster our levels and protect against future illness.

When sunlight makes contact with the body, it triggers a chemical reaction under the skin that leads to the production of the vitamin. It gets into the blood and circulates round the body, where it gets stored for use at a later date.

CHILDREN born to mothers who smoked during pregnancy have a greater risk of developing behavioural problems and of using drugs later in life.
Those exposed to cigarette smoke in the womb are more likely to experiment with alcohol, cannabis and tobacco once they hit their teenage years.

University of Nottingham researchers concluded maternal smoking may effect the development of the orbitofrontal cortex - the part of the brain that regulates emotion and evaluates rewards.

They scanned 400 teenagers and found those with thinner orbitofrontal cortexes were more likely to dabble in a wider range of drugs. The most common included stimulants and psychedelic drugs.

But study author Professor Tomas Paus said the findings should be treated with caution.

He said: "We could only show an association, not a causal effect of maternal smoking on brain and behaviour."

“It is also important to note that almost half of the children of mothers smoking during pregnancy showed no differences in the brain and behaviour, suggesting that something protected them from the adverse effect of cigarette smoke.”

Separate research has led UK and US scientists to believe that smoking during pregnancy can damage the structure of a baby's brain and significantly increases the risk of behavioural problems.

Writing in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, researchers said problems can begin to surface in children as young as three-years-old.

ENVIRONMENTAL LOBBY GROUP ACCUSED OF 'ECO-SNOBBERY'

A LEADING environmental lobby group was accused last night of “eco-snobbery” and “rank hypocrisy” after it refused to let an airport operator join its carbon reduction campaign.
The group, 10:10, which encourages homes and businesses to cut emissions by 10 per cent by 2010, blocked a membership application by Manchester Airport bosses who had pledged to meet the group’s targets.

The operator, which also runs East Midlands, Humberside and Bournemouth Airports, said it wanted to sign up to the campaign to demonstrate its greener credentials.

However, within days of the request, it was told politely thanks, but no thanks.

In an email, activist Duncan Clark, a journalist at a left-wing newspaper that backs the campaign, said: “We've taken the view that airports won't be able to participate in 10:10.

“We don't think it's in the spirit of a campaign that directly encourages everyone to take fewer flights to have airports involved.

“We also need to be careful not to open ourselves up to criticism of greenwash from the wider environment movement.

“In particular, we're concerned that allowing airports to sign up would give the impression that the aviation sector as a whole was making great strides on short-term emissions reductions, when in fact the airports represent only a tiny proportion of the emissions of that sector.”

Although 10:10 works with power generator EDF on the campaign, he added: “We feel that allowing airports to participate would be the equivalent of letting power station operators sign up for their office emissions without a parallel commitment on their far more substantial generation emissions.”
