The All Blacks represent New Zealand in rugby union, which is regarded as the country's national sport. They won the inaugural Rugby World Cup, are the leading points scorers of all time and the only international rugby team with a winning record against every test nation they have played. They have the highest win ratio of close to 75 percent and rank as the number one team in the world for the most period of time in IRB World Rankings. More than half of the top 20 ranked rugby union test nations have never beaten New Zealand in over 100 years of international competition.

The All Blacks compete annually with the Wallabies (Australia) and the Springboks (South Africa) in the Tri-Nations Series, and have been Tri-Nations champions nine times in the tournament's 14-year history. They hold the Bledisloe Cup which they contest annually with Australia and have three times completed a Grand Slam (in 1978, 2005 and 2008) defeating all four Home Nations during one tour.

Currently the number one ranked team in the IRB World Rankings[2] they were named the International Rugby Board (IRB) Team of the Year in 2005, 2006 and 2008.[3] Fifteen former All Blacks have been inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame, one into the IRB Hall of Fame.

The team first competed in 1884 against Cumberland County, New South Wales, and played their first Test match in 1903, a victory against Australia. This was followed by a tour of the northern hemisphere in 1905.

Australia national rugby union team

The Australian national rugby union team is the representative side of Australia in rugby union. The Tri Nations will become the Four Nations in 2012 should the inclusion of Argentina as the fourth team go ahead. Argentina has been invited to join but there are a number of conditions that they have to fulfill.

The series is played on a home-and-away basis. From the first tournament in 1996 through 2005, the three teams played each other twice. Since then, each team has played the others three times, except in the Rugby World Cup year of 2007 when the series reverted to a double round-robin. Since the inception of the series the games played between Australia and New Zealand also go toward determining the winner of the Bledisloe Cup each year. The Freedom Cup is contested between New Zealand and South Africa, and the Mandela Challenge Plate between Australia and South Africa.

The New Zealand All Blacks have dominated the Tri Nations series, winning the competition no fewer than eight times, including the inaugural event in 1996 and the past four championships in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

The competition is traditionally played between the months of July to September each year these years Tri Nations 2010 fixtures can be seen here. Each team plays six fixtures in the series, playing the other two team three times. This was increased from each team playing four fixtures prior to 2006.

The increase is to accommodate the growing demand for the competition from television audiences not just in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa but from a growing interest in the competition from countries in the Northern Hemisphere such as the United Kingdom who have the Tri Nations Championship fixtures are played across all three countries.

With each of the teams playing three of their six games at home, coming up against one team twice and the other just once. The overall winner is determined by the team who comes out of their six match series with the most points, with four points awarded for a win and two points for a draw.

A bonus point is available if the winning team scores four or more tries in a game and the losing team is also eligible for the bonus point if the margin of defeat is seven points or fewer in addition to the bonus point if they have scored four tries and still lost.

The Tri Nations Championship Winners have never been decided by a tie breaker; however, if two of the teams finished with the same number of points in the competition the winner is determined by the team with the best tries scored/conceded points’ difference.

News Previews Tri Nations Cup :Kahui set to return in three to four weeks – Its Shows that Injured All Blacks utility back Richard Kahui is set to return to rugby in three to four weeks’ time, All Blacks Doctor Deb Robinson says.

25-year-old Kahui saw a shoulder specialist in Auckland yesterday after injuring his right shoulder in the All Blacks first Investec Tri Nations Test win over the Springboks in Auckland ten days ago.

“Richard sustained a small fracture of the shoulder socket but the good news is that the injury is stable and improving rapidly and, at this stage, he doesn’t require surgery,” Dr Robinson said.
