How would you like to see THIS coming in your car window???

Yeah, this is what nightmares are made of! Bwahahahaa...

NOT Really! It was a GREAT adventure! Let me tell you about it...

I am a huge animal lover...and going on a safari sounded like fun to me! And when it's practically in your own backyard (an hour away) then you go...and you take your grangirl!

After spending a wonderful day in Hunstville, Alabama (I'll tell of that adventure in the near future) we decided to end the day at the Harmony Safari Park. To say it is off the beaten path is an understatement, but my trusty GPS led us right to the gates! As we entered, there were clearly marked signs everywhere to lead you up to where you need to buy tickets and animal food. I bought two tubs of food (one for the each of us) and we began our adventure.

I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting but what we experienced was so much fun and a little scary at times! Once you get inside, you choose how far to put your windows down and how to feed the animals. You can see in my pictures that both my grangirl and myself eventually got a little brave to actual pour the food into their mouths instead of throwing it out on the ground as we had done when we first got there.

I have to say the emus were a bit aggressive, but we came back with all fingers and faces intact! There were a few "close calls" I suppose. Do you see the picture (on the right) of what appears to be a big brown eye and a beak? Well, yeah....that is an emu's face and what appears to be a steering wheel behind him...well, yeah...that's exactly what that was..and I was sitting behind that steering wheel!!!! YIKES!

As you go through the park, the animals rush right up to you in hopes that you have food...and we did! We even went back to get more food! You can drive around as many times as you want! There are some animals like the camel and giraffe that are in their own cage instead of having free roam of the place like most do. There are some of the bigger animals that decide they are going to stand right in front of the car and not let you move! Watch out for horns...and tongues! On both accounts some are really HUGE! Be prepared to give your car a good washing (inside and out) because the animals love to lick your windows and lots of food ends up stuck in windows and even in your seats!

So if getting up close and personal with the animals isn't your thing, you can still drive through the park with your windows up. When they find out you don't have food, they just move on to the next car that does. If you don't want to take a chance on your vehicle getting scratching or messed up, you can rent one of their vehicles. Any way you choose, it is a really fun outing...and we screamed and laughed so hard!!! It was GREAT!

After you are finished riding around, then you have the option to park, get out, and see other animals that aren't as aggressive! There are sweet little pigs, donkeys, tortoises, as well as, a reptile house, and monkey kangaroo areas! There is a tortoise (top right pic) named Grandpa Kelley..and he is 108 years old! You can buy tortoise food and get free popcorn to feed the piggies.

The Harmony Safari Park was the perfect end to our day in Huntsville! The hour long ride home was full of more giggles as we talked about the adventures at the safari park!

Ivy Green

Welcome to Ivy Green, home of Helen Keller.

My grangirl loves history, so she was ecstatic when I told her we were actually going to Ivy Green, Helen Keller's home in Tuscumbia, Alabama!

~The Home~

Inside the home, you will see much as it was when the Kellers lived there. Downstairs, there is the original living room, dining room, and master bedroom. One of the rooms has been converted into a museum, and the back room that leads out to the kitchen (separate building) is where you check in and purchase your tickets.

Here is the infamous dining room where Miss Annie and Helen were locked away for hours...both stong-willed and neither willing to give in. However, it was on this day that Ms. Annie Sullivan won the battle...and Helen eventually ate with her utensils AND folded her napkin! Much of the china didn't fair so well! The silver tea set came over from England, and is around 200 years old.

The master bedroom is at the foot of the stairs, just as you come through the front door, to the right.

Annie and Helen shared an upstairs bedroom. There was also another bedroom that I am assuming James occupied.

~The Kitchen~

During this time, it was common that the kitchen was apart from the house. In the above picture of the kitchen, the right door went to the cook's bedroom and the left door went to the actual kitchen.

~The Grounds~

There is no way I can include every picture that I took, but the grounds are just gorgeous! Helen had quite a collection of things from all over the world....and you will find them throughout the gardens.

~The Water Pump and Monuments~

There are also many monuments...including that infamous water pump where Helen finally made the connection with words! It was so cool to actually touch it!

~The Cottage~

This is the cottage that sits on the property just beside the house. In case you don't know the story....Ms. Sullivan felt that she could teach Helen better if she was given full reign with no interaction with Helen's parents. She convinced the Kellers to let her be alone with Helen in the cottage for 2 weeks. Since the cottage was so close to the home, Helen would know where she was. So, the Kellers loaded Helen up for a "long journey" which was basically them riding her around for a long time then coming back to the cottage. Of course, she had no idea her parents would be just next door!

When two weeks was up, Mr. Keller insisted that Annie return to the house with Helen. She reluctantly obeyed, even though Helen really wasn't any further along in her learning. Until, after returning to the house, one day at the water pump where Helen finally made the connection that w-a-t-e-r was the wet stuff coming out of the pump...she had a flashback to before she lost her hearing and sight to when she said "wa-wa" as a baby. It was then that Helen's learning truly began and she went on to do great things and meet many famous people, as well as, graduate college with honors and write several books.

~The Museum~

I mentioned earlier in my post that there was a museum in the home now. There are all kinds of wonderful things about Helen's life...such as the key that she used to lock Miss Annie in her room, as well as tons of pictures, books in braille, trinkets, and treasures of her life!

~A Visit~
If you are ever in the area, I would strongly suggest taking a day to visit Ivy Green. If you happen to be there in mid June-July, you might want to even catch the outdoor play (behind the property) of The Miracle Worker. And if you are planning a visit, I'd also suggest watching any version of the movie, The Miracle Worker. We watched the version where Patty Duke played Ms. Annie Sullivan and Melissa Gilbert played Helen Keller. Oh, and don't forget the little gift shop at the back of the house!

Fun At The Falls

I always enjoy when my grangirl comes for a visit. We have had such a good time this summer. In my next few posts, I'll share some of the highlights.

On the Saturday after she arrived, I decided to take her on an outing to Falls Mill in Belvidere, TN...just about 15 minutes from my house. I had not been to the falls since I was a little girl visiting my aunt and uncle that lived nearby.

Falls Mill was built in 1873 as a cotton and woolen factory. It was later converted for use as a cotton gin, then as a wood working shop and grist mill. Today the mill, that is nestled in a cove along Factory Creek, is a Museum of Power and Industry. The 32 foot waterwheel still powers machinery on four levels of the building. There is also a Bed & Breakfast log cabin that is open all year long.

It is really cool to be at the top of the waterwheel looking down.....

But it is even cooler to hike the trail down below and see the waterwheel at this angle!

Feeding the fish was a particular favorite!

And the waterfall, itself, is beautiful!

There's even a nice place to sit and have a picnic!

We enjoyed the inside of the mill, as well. There were so many cool old things...like an old (working) telephone, a wonderfully working player piano, phonograph, spinning wheel, and much more!

It was such a great little outing for us!

And my grangirl made a very creative cake for our cookout!

Patriotic Ice Cream Freezer * Front Porch Decor

When I think of the 4th of July, many words come to mind....

Freedom

Patriotic

Brave

Independance

And when I think about celebrating our independence, any one of the following might come to mind...

family and friends

red, white, blue

picnics * cookouts

homemade ice cream

fireworks

When I was decorating my front porch for the 4th, I decided to make an arrangement to greet my family and friends at the front door. As I began to plan, I knew that my "newest" acquisition, a vintage ice cream freezer, had to play a part...because who doesn't like some homemade ice cream on the 4th!?!? So I grabbed my $5 auction find and set to work on decorating it. I gathered some silk flowers in red, white, & blue, a nice sized flag, and an empty wine bottle...and I set to work!

I wedged the wine bottle between the metal and the outside barrel parts. It holds the flag perfectly! I just stuck flowers around the bottle to cover it and to fill in the freezer. I love the metal part of the freezer, so I wanted that to still show...I think it adds character! And VOILE'!! Such an EASY and CUTE DIY!!!

It adds the perfect touch to my front porch!

May we always remember that Freedom is NOT Free!

Paris Flea Market

Our second day in Paris was a Saturday...perfect timing for the Flea Market!

Now, I don't speak any language except English, however, I learned a few phrases before the trip...enough to get by. It came in handy, but I was thrilled to find so many people that spoke English. I even came across one man that serenaded us while we shopped. He was very good-natured and poked a little fun at us southern belles...but in a nice way!

So, let take a little look at my flea market purchases...

How cute is this??!!?? I'm unhappy that when my bags were inspected at Customs, they chipped on edge of my box...and didn't put the piece back in so I could glue it back. :( I still love it!

Besides the flowers, I think this pin cushion is my favorite find! Stripes and velvet berries!!! What's not to LOVE!!??!!

Well, that sums up my purchases at the flea market. I thought I'd share a few tips for anyone that might be planning a trip to the Paris flea market some day.

* Take plenty of cash::: small bills/coins

* Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, take a bag or small backpack, don't forget a water bottle

* Don't be afraid to dicker....just don't insult them by going too low!!

* Ask if you can touch something but don't be afraid to dig through baskets and such if they have them loaded down

* Keep your belongings close to you ...especially your wallet/purse...and BE AWARE!!! There ARE pickpockets!!!

* Buy only things that you will have room in your luggage for! It's expensive to ship...but it can be done.

* Hint:: the VANVES FLEA MARKET is a very nice size with affordable goodies, unlike the HUGE Clignancourt (aka Le Marche' aux Puces de Saint-Ouen)

I'm sure you have been wondering where I've been. Well....life gets busy, and unfortunately blogging takes a back seat. Since I posted last, my family has added two new additions....two new grandsons six weeks apart. I am truly blessed by three precious grandkids!!! School has been busy with many changes happening in our system...and most recently, I went to Europe as soon as school was out. I'll be posting about my adventures in Paris, France...Lucerne, Switzerland...and Munich, Germany. Stay tuned!

I love bunnies, yes I do. I love bunnies, how about YOU?

Even though most of my bunnies come hopping out in the spring, I have some of my bunny collection out and about my cottage the whole year through.

A few have already started to pop out and hop around the cottage already....I'm so over winter! There is still more winter to go through...I never can remember exactly when we have blackberry winter, redbud winter, dogwood winter, etc. but I'm sure we haven't gone through them just yet.

However, our weather lately has definitely felt like spring...and it's been wonderful! You never know day to day what you're going to get in Tennessee...but I'll sure take the nice days we can get!

I LOVE online auctions! I have "won" so many wonderful things in the past. However, I have lost some treasures because they have gone higher than I was willing to spend, had a change of heart, missed the final hour of the auction, etc. etc.

I LOVE the "thrill of the hunt" and an auction just makes that intensify! LOL

Here's what I am currently "winning"....but that can change quickly...as there are still ten days left of the online auction....Oh the pressure! lol

I can always find room for One.More.Chair. lol

If I win this mirror....it will get a shabby "chippy white" cottagey look!!! Just sayin'...LOL

What girly girl can resist something "Pink to Drink from"....

And so far, I'm winning at $1...Yes, that's ONE DOLLAR!!!! lol

And, yes...

One More Chair...

especially when it's a child's chair!

So tell me if you do any online auctioning/junking/antiquing....

I don't like losing items I want....but it's important to keep it in perspective...and not get caught up in the moment and go beyond what I'm truly comfortable with spending on any given item.

Stressful...yeah.

My Heart Skips a Beat

I've always loved Valentine's Day since I was a kid. I adored making a Valentine box each year in elementary school. I would use foil, red lacy paper doilies, and heart cut outs in pink, red, and white. I loved making Valentines for my classmates, and looked forward to receiving them, as well.

I've collected hearts for a long time. Many are incorporated into my every day décor. However, there are special ones that are just for Valentine's Day. I always look forward to decorating with them after my Christmas decorations are put away.

Red, Pink, Hearts, Roses....Oh how it all makes my heart skip a beat!

Giddy for Flea Markets

There are many things that make me giddy....but nothing more than a good flea market! The Nashville Flea Market is open one weekend a month. I've been going with my bestie for years, and never come home empty handed!

There are several things to think about when preparing for your flea market jaunt.

Be sure to check the forecast to see what you are up against. Some flea markets will be there rain or shine, but check that out beforehand so you don't show up to an empty lot!

It's easy to get caught up in the amount of "goodies" that are offered. Having a list of things you are looking for in particular (and an idea of what you are willing to pay form them) is a good plan. If you have been to a particular flea market enough to know where vendors are set up, it's very helpful to list the items you are looking for in the order in which you will find those vendors that offer them.

Shopping takes a lot out of you and can make you hungry! You will find food at most flea markets, but are you willing to pay the price for what they offer? It might be worth it to pack snacks or even a light lunch. I have a stylish small backpack that is perfect for holding a water and a small snack or sandwich.

Have CA$H! Some vendors will take a major credit card...and a small few might take a check, so to be on the safe side, make sure you have cash! Some totals will be insignificant amounts, so be sure to have some small bills on hands. If you are looking to purchase items at a greater value, you might want to have some larger bills so you don't have a huge wad of bills to fumble through!

So you want a bargain! Nothing wrong with that. Most vendors welcome a little dickering/haggling. Actually it can be quite fun! However, don't go so low the original asking price that it is an insult...but don't just pay the asking price if you don't want to spend that much...you just might be surprised! It always feels great to have a SCORE!!!

So you're finding some good stuff that you can't resist. Now, how can you carry it all? Investing in a shopping cart is a great idea. My bestie and I went if half each for a cart that we take each time we to flea marketing. It has most definitely paid off in a huge way! So...if you ask me...bite the bullet and get one!

Well...I'm off to the flea market soon to have some FUN! I can't wait to see what's in store for me there...it's always different...and the anticipation is always exciting!

TIARA: The Glassware...Not The Crown

When I was in my mid twenties, a young married mother, I began selling Tiara glassware as a part-time side job...I've always loved glassware, dishes, and such....so this seemed like a perfect side job for me. I loved the Tiara glassware, and earned many pieces from selling at home parties.

Here's a little background about the company...in a nutshell...

Tiara Exclusives began operation on July 1, 1970, in Dunkirk, Indiana. It was a spin off company of the longtime Indiana Glass Company which gave Tiara an edge in the glass industry. Tiara was started to capitalize on the growing popularity of party plan companies, such as Home Interiors, Tupperware and Mary Kay. Tiara's product focus was on decorative and tableware items. Early catalogs mainly showcased dinnerware and beverage set items. Later on, Tiara expanded to include many novelties and accessory items. Later catalogs still marketed the company's bedrock, dinnerware lines, but they also included new items featuring candleholders, frames and figurines.
Tiara Exclusives was strictly a retail company, they did not manufacture any glass. Indiana Glass had the hand shops - handmade vs machine-pressed glass, they bought the molds and handmade the glass for the party plan industry. Tiara bought most of their product from Indiana Glass, who in turn bought molds from a variety of glass companies, such as Imperial, Federal, Fenton and Fostoria. Tiara warehoused, sold and shipped glass, but they did not manufacture glass. Tiara Exclusives closed in November 1998. Home Interiors & Gifts, a Texas direct sales company, purchased the rights to the Tiara name and now sells some of the dinnerware pieces.

Selling Tiara was something new for me...I had been to some "home parties" but never thought I'd be the one selling anything to others. As I said before, I've always loved glassware and dishes, so this is why I "jumped" onto the "home parties" wagon!

And look at these beauties....

I always adored the decanters. . . I especially loved the amber color.

Since I had young children, I was especially interested in the sweet Nursery Rhymes set. I had a sweet set of my own, but unfortunately after several moves, I no longer have it which makes me sad.

When I was doing home parties for Tiara, I gave away door prizes at each party. My door prizes were these sweet little heart trinket dishes and/or mini "Last Supper" plates. There were large Last Supper plates that could be purchased.

I gave a lot of my "earned pieces" to my Mom, because she really loved the pieces . . . and she was SO sweet to open up her home to host for me on numerous occasions! When I see the pics of either of these, it makes me smile....it was a FUN time. . . selling these sweet dishes, meeting new people, and gaining confidence in myself while selling Tiara. A lot of years have passed since I sold Tiara glassware. It's hard to believe, but to this day, I don't have any pieces to show for my time with Tiara . . . so all of these pics were found on the web . . .

However . . . . Good News . . .

I'm happy to find out that I can find pieces of Tiara on a dish/glassware replacements site. I think that soon, I will own a few pieces of this glassware that I sold. . . and owned . . . many years ago.

The S Word

Kids aren't the only ones that anticipate a Snow Day! Teacher's love them too!
Monday was an Inservice Day for teachers. It was MLK Day so students had the day off. At the end of the day, our principal called a short meeting. At the end of said meeting...he said, "Be sure to turn your pajamas inside out, flush ice cubes down the toilet, and put a spoon under your pillow." Now, this may seem strange to many of you...but we, as educators, understand this! It is the SNOW DAY RITUAL! We usually tell our students to do this when there is snow in the forecast...however, they weren't in school that day. Now we take this seriously, because in middle Tennessee...we don't see much snow....So that night...this is what I did....

I did just what our principal asked us to do....and it got us...NOT 1... NOT 2... NOT 3... but 4 SNOW DAYS! WHOOP! WHOOP!

But it gets better! Our superintendent makes everything FUN....so just announcing that there was a SNOW DAY would be too mundane....so he comes up with a cool video for each day that we get off....If you want to know just how cool...then check out these links.....

The latter video was recognized nationwide...not THAT is what's COOL!

That reminds me of a favorite children's author, Lester Laminack...and his Snow Day book...You will have to check it out to see why I love this book so much!

I remember playing in the snow as a kid. We built snowmen, sledded down our big hill, had snowball fights until we couldn't feel our fingers or toes.

We would head back inside, pull off all of our wet clothes and drink hot chocolate with marshmallows. Once we were warmed up, we'd be ready for round two outdoors!

Now, I still love SNOW and a snow day off from school...but I don't go outdoors as much as I did as a kid or when my boys were young. Now, I prefer to watch from the window....cuppa coffee or hot chocolate in hand...as my pups run circles round and round the backyard and stop for an occasional bite of snow. lol

It was hard to believe, but yes, this first snow of the season that we got this week, ended up with 4 days off from school!!! Wow! I've enjoyed the snow from indoors and gotten lots of things accomplished INSIDE ! If you missed my Snow Day Project, you can read it here.

Let The Sun Shine In

I love all types of glass bottles....but none more than pretty colored ones....and in particular....transparent ones in a window with the light streaming through.

I have a collection of vintage glass insulators...some were my dad's and many were found on some of my antique jaunts. Most of them are either aqua or clear. My laundry room has windows where the light streams in. The windowsill is deep enough for the insulators, and look great with bottles intermingled. The cobalt blue dog bottle was a gift from my bestie.

I love how bright and colorful it makes this room!

I plan on keeping an eye out for many other colored glass that would look great in these windows.

Snow Day Project

When we left work on Monday (an inservice day for teachers only) we anticipated the arrival of snow that night. Ice/snow was in the forecast for Tuesday, so Monday night school was called off for the next day. I awoke early on Tuesday morning....because teacher's like snow days too...and found there was NO snow! I had the day off, but there was no snow. However, reports started coming in from neighboring towns (and the town where I worked) that the snow had arrived....about an hour later, here it came in my neck of the woods. I was like a kid, to say the least! My pups had a ball running around the backyard and eating some snow every once in a while. So by Tuesday night, we had a nice helping of the white stuff, and with the low temps, I knew it wouldn't go anywhere before morning. Late evening, we got word that school was cancelled for today (Wednesday). Ahhhh . . . . another day to sleep in, drink coffee, watch movies . . . . but when today came, I was full of energy and wanted to be more productive than yesterday . . . . So . . . . I decided to start on this book shelf that has taken a backseat since I moved in. The previous owners used it as * shock * a bookshelf! LOL These shelves had a spongy-green shelf paper on them. It was difficult to remove the residue that came from the underneath of the "paper". All the while, I knew the look I wanted, and I started rummaging through boxes in the garage, that haven't been unpacked yet.

Soon . . . . it started coming together!

I found this cute little frame (that has no glass or back). I knew this had to get a little makeover...and so I grabbed some burlap, a rhinestone rosette, and a couple of pearl pins....and Voile'...a cute little addition to this part of the shelf!

I have to say . . . . when it was finished, I stepped back . . . and I was happy with the results of my "bookless bookshelf"! This day ended up being a positively perfect and productive snow day! Now I think I'll grab another cup of coffee, sit by the window that is beside this bookshelf, and just enjoy the snow . . . and my treasures that fill these shelves.

A Sweet Writing Desk & Feminine Touches

I am a girly-girl. There is no doubt in that! I love pink, lace, ruffles, and frills. However, that's not my decorating style. But in my bedroom, I have many feminine touches. Today, I'm sharing my writing desk. Everything here makes me smile and happy!

This little corner in the master bedroom is the perfect little feminine nook that I need to feed the need for pink and frills.

I found the perfect little white photo stand for a picture of my precious grangirl.

Sweet pincushions and a lovely lady's head ($1 deal at a yard sale) add the perfect touch atop some lovely books about love.

It's a great spot for doing my Bible study.

You have to have something with your initial in your space...right? Right.

My mother's music box and these sweet pink roses in a blue mason jar makes me happy, happy, happy!

This little book from my son and his girlfriend called "When God Thinks Of You He Smiles" makes me smile!

I just love my little writing desk and its feminine touches!

That Small Town Feeling

I've always lived in a small town. It's the life for me. I have been fortunate to travel some awesome places...many large cities...but my heart belongs to "small town living".

For 52 years, I lived in the same small town...I grew up here and raised my boys here. Just this past August, I found my cottage in a neighboring town...and yes, it is a small town too!

Every where I turn, there's a small town, and I like it that way. I love the fact that I'm only around an hour from Nashville, TN, Chattanooga, TN, and Huntsville, AL for shopping and restaurants. However, I am only minutes in all directions from quaint little towns like Tullahoma, Lynchburg, and Manchester.

Today after work, I needed to run an errand in Manchester...about 15 min. from work. Luckily, this was one of my early days that I don't tutor after school. So I decided to treat myself to a little small town fun...

Come with me, and let me show you what I mean...

High Cotton is a sweet shop that is in an old two story house. The owners have worked hard to make this a showpiece, as well as, a sweet place to shop. Here, you can find boutique type clothing and jewelry, as well as, great home furnishings with a farmhouse feel!

I fell in love with this Drug Store sign, and it sure didn't hurt that it was on sale either, so it came home with me!

After I left High Cotton, I decided I needed a bite to eat to fortify me, as I had a few other stops that I wanted to make.

So off I went to Jiffy Burger. Now this place isn't much to look at from the outside...It is a most white building with a "drive in from yesteryear" in the back. I ordered my usual tenderloin...because it is ahhhhmazing...with wonderful think crinkle-cut fries. YUM!

I don't normally have dessert after my meals, but I was in the mood for some ice cream since the temps had actually warmed up for the high 50's. LOL Russell Stover is just a hop, skip, and a jump down the road, so that's where I headed. I got rocky road ice cream in a waffle cone, and of course bought a few chocolates for later.

Next, I planned to check out a "new place-for me" called the Cracked Pot.

I was happy to find lots of farmhouse type décor. I bought a magnolia leaf wreath for my den but I have plans for returning to this sweet shop in the near future!

As I wrapped up the afternoon and headed toward home, I was reminded of a country song that is popular at the moment called Home Town Boy. I'm reminded of this song, not only because it is about a "small town boy" but because that small town boy grew up in my small hometown, whom I taught in preschool, and who went to school with my boys. So I'm going to leave you with.....

Today is Catherine Duchess of Cambridge's 36th birthday.

I wonder what her cake will look like.

She has a busy year coming up with expecting her third child, Harry's wedding, and more royal responsibilities that usual.

I just love Kate. I think she is simply beautiful and a wonderful mother.

For The Love Of Decorating

So when did you first get interested in home decorating?

For me I think it's always been there. I can remember paying close attention to details when creating homes for my Barbies. I adored several 60's/70;s sitcoms for 1. fashion and 2. home décor. Here are some of my favs!

I dreamed of being Ann Marie (That Girl) because I adored her style for fashion, her beautiful dark hair that was so different from my own, her cute squeaky/hoarse voice, and especially her apartment....oh and she had a cute boyfriend too!

She had it ALL in my eyes!

Then there was the Mary Tyler Moore show.

Who didn't love Mary Richards?

Independent * Pretty * Smart * Kind

Her apartment was so cute and quaint! I especially loved the huge windows and that cute bookcase in her sunken living room.

Petticoat Junction was definitely one of my favs. I loved the Shady Rest Hotel...and

I always could relate to Betty Jo Bradley Elliott. Not only are we both redheads, we both can see the potential in something that is run down and shabby!

I adored the little cottage that she made into a cozy home for herself, Steve, and Kathy Jo!

And then there was Bewitched!

This is where my love for window seats started!

And what little girl wouldn't love Tabitha's pink bedroom?!?!

I mean, how positively precious is that!?!

What a huge impact these shows made on me when it comes to decorating.

Now, I'll get back to my original question....when was your love for decorating sparked?

Wintery Decorating

Christmas is over but winter is not. The red and green are put away, but now what?

I love the twinkle that my white lights give off...it's kind of magical! That is something that I like to carry over in my décor after Christmas. So I went on the hunt for some inspiration. This is what I came up with...

How perfect is this?!? Add some white pinecone lights to the basket and Voila'!

I'm going to do something like that in front of my fireplace. I was sad to find that these gas logs didn't work when I purchased the home, so I have plans in the future to get that working again. I think this idea is a good alternative!

Adding some sweet "snowballs" in bowls are a cute wintery touch to a tabletop.

Mine are a variety of white vintage ornaments.

I love the look of the white "snowballs" in an ornate silver bowl.

They are equally as cute in this simple one.

And baby when it's cold outside....

a pile of blankets is a MUST!

An "icy" or "snowy" wreath hanging on a window or mirror is a nice wintery touch.

I love the contrast of the white and wood shown here!

A Word To Live By

A new year is upon us. Out with the old...In with the new, as they say.

Many of us, me included, start to reflect on the past year, weigh our accomplishments and failures, set new goals. As I look back to the beginning of 2017, I read the words that I wrote...

"With a new year, comes new beginnings. Many of us make a list of things we intend to do in the new year. After my bible study time this morning, I've decided to fill my list with things that I intend to rid myself of! So I've created a list of three things that are my focus to throw out of my life...bitterness is at the top of my list. While I have come a long way in a year, I'm still holding on to some of this.... It has no place in my life, and it must be kicked to the curb!"

Did I accomplish this? Did I fail?

Well, I'll tell ya....I have to admit I started off strong and I finished pretty strong too. However, along the way, I struggled at times...badly. But as I really consider where I was when I first wrote these words, and where I am now, TIME was needed to get here. So even though I stumbled along the way...I made it to the finish line with a SCORE!!!

So for 2018, I am choosing just a word....a...single...word...

I threw a few words around at first but then I prayed about it (because you can NEVER go wrong with that) and the word HE gave me was....

EMBRACE

I have to admit, at first I thought, really? I can think of better words....Then I said, Really Rebecca??? You know better than God??? Well, duh! So I totally embraced EMBRACE! lol

I don't know exactly WHY this word....but I look forward as He reveals this to me....

I know that Embrace can mean....

1. to take gladly, eagerly

2. encircle, surround, enclose

3. to take or clasp in the arms

4. to include, contain

So, I look forward to Embracing 2018, and what God has in store for me.

My Year in Review

I always enjoy reflecting on my year. It always amazes me at how much I've done in a year.

2017 brought many fun outings and trips with family and friends!

In March, my grangirl and I took a trip to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg where we enjoyed several days in a cabin where we soaked in the hot tub, had fashion shows, played "Genie", danced and enjoyed the game room. We went to WonderWorks where she climbed the walls and I laid on a bed of nails LOL, Ripley's Wax Museum where we saw LOTS of cool "people" with I Dream of Jeannie being her favorite...then got "lost" in the maze that they had as well, The Comedy Barn where she got to go up on stage, and The Island where we ate and shopped. We loved The Apple Barn as always wonderful but our favorite restaurant is Paula Deen's! It was her first time, and she loved it so much that we went there twice! :)

In June, my bestie and I went to Savannah, Georgia for several days. We toured the city by tour bus, and our driver was actually from a small town near where we live. We ate and shopped/antiqued, ate, drank, and shopped/antiqued some more and went on a Ghost Tour! I think The Olde Pink House was my favorite restaurant, and we spent half a day at Bonaventure Cemetery where we saw Gracie's grave, along with many other famous/infamous people. Our hotel was nice, and we talked and laughed our heads off. We always have the best time...that's what besties do!

During the summer, my grangirl came to visit. We had tea parties, fashion shows, danced/sang, and went to all of our favorite places...Splash Island, Creative Discovery , Hands On Science Center, the ice cream place, Mellow Mushroom, the antique carousel and splash pads at Coolidge Park, Faith Promise Church, Chick-Fil-A, and much more! We cram in as much fun as we can in the summer....and enjoy every single second of it!!!

Also during the summer, I was able to reconnect with my bestie from high school! We went to lunch one day, and she got to meet my grangirl. Then we went to see the Doobie Brothers and Chicago! It was a great night of music, catching up, and laughter! It was like we were never apart!

This year I got to see my oldest son on Good Morning America and Harry Connick Jr.'s show, as well as, in person at The Ryman. I got to enjoy worship with my youngest son, daughter-in-love, and grangirl at their church where my son in on staff in the music ministry, and plays on stage many Sundays. I got to spend Mother's Day with them at their church and take pics in the photo booth car.

In July, I celebrated my oldest son's 35th birthday with chocolate cake at his and Allie's home. In November, we celebrated my youngest son's 30th birthday on Thanksgiving Day with pie and coffee after a huge Thanksgiving meal. My daughter-in-love's birthday was in Sept. and my son's precious girlfriend's was in October. Emmy turned two in March and had her second Gotcha Day in August. Lucy turned one in June and we celebrated her first Gotcha Day in November. My grangirl got to be here then because she came to visit so we could go see a play, Sister Act, at the local theater/playhouse.

In September, I began a new way of eating....I had weight I needed to get off, and needed to get my self back in good health! I was amazed at the loss of weight...in a healthy way, how well I began sleeping, and the energy that I had! It is something that I plan to continue and maintain!
Also.....I met someone special. I am blessed to have him in my life, and I'm happy in the direction our friendship/relationship is going. I look forward to what the new year brings for us!

In October, we celebrated my grangirl's 8th birthday and my *cough, cough* 52nd birthday. During my first week of fall break, I went to my sister's and brother-in-law's house in Indiana. We ate, shopped, went to *my first* Oktoberfest...which was ahhhhhmazing, got to see one of my great nieces, and celebrated my birthday with a Princess Cake and Pomegranate Martinis. My sister came to visit me a couple of times in November, and we stayed up late just chatting away! It was wonderful to have that "sister time" again!

So....I guess the biggest...and scariest part of 2017 was BUYING MY OWN HOUSE! I have worked two LONG and HARD years to get there...to have my own house again...and I did it all by myself! After months of looking, the PERFECT house was right there when it came time for me to actually put in a bid on a home. To say I'm in love with it is an understatement. God's hands were in it all the way, and it is a dream come true for my pups and me! On August 10th, the pups and I closed on our home, and immediately moved in. I have had the best time decorating it, and have many ideas for future projects!

In December, I entertained for the first time for a group....my Bunco Babes. We had a great December Bunco! And....I got to have my very first Christmas in my new home with all of my kids and grangirl here to celebrate. It was the BEST Christmas in a long, long time!

2017 was a wonderful year, to say the least! It was the best one I've had in a long time! With where my life is at right now, I anticipate 2018 to be even better. Thank you, Lord, for these blessings!!! I am counting them one by one...and I am so appreciative!

Post-Christmas Blues Gotcha Down?

I don't know about you, but I get kind of down after Christmas. I plan and plan for months...shopping for just the right presents, wrapping them all up, put up decorations, planning my Christmas menu...etc...etc.. Then in a blink of the eye, the presents are opened and the food is all eaten. The Christmas tree looks sad without the presents underneath. Then comes the dreaded task of taking down the lights, trees, and decorations and boxing them all up for next year. It is surely enough to get most of us down!

So how do you beat the post-Christmas blues?

Well, I've got a few suggestions....

Start a Christmas Memories Book

What better time to record the memories of this Christmas than right after it's over. This way, it is all fresh in your memory, and you can get it all penned before the memories fade. Each year, you can add to the memory book, as well as, revisit Christmas pasts!

Make Upcoming Plans

It's always fun to have something to look forward to! So start making plans for something in the near future. It can be something as simple as roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over the fire pit, wine and cheese night with friends, or a girls' night out!

Redecorate a Room

For me, this is something that I do often anyway....it's just what I thrive on! lol

You don't have to go out and buy all new furniture or décor. Just move things from one room to another! Give a vintage item a new purpose, buy one thing for the room and create around it, just rearrange the furniture. This always makes me HAPPY!!! How about working on a Gallery Wall? That will keep you busy for a bit and give you something to look forward to working on for a while. Check out my post here.

Craft a New Year's Memory Jar
