amazed at the undergrowth both saplings and grasses. Shanahan's has a walking trail that offers another great view at the mountain's summit. The walking trail carpark is located on Boboyan Rd. There is also a very modern viewing platform with an outstanding view just before the walking trail looking out over the Gudgenby Valley.

My purpose today was actually to set a trail camera to photograph the Shanahan's Mountain wildlife over the next few weeks but I stopped in to take a little video of the lookout and admire the view. I have also heard that YouTube is purging inactive accounts and I haven't posted a video in a while...

The photographs will be 16 mp resolution and the camera takes IR pictures and video at night. I'm hoping to eventually post some wildlife pictures from the area.

I wouldn't recommend the dirt section of Boboyan road for a standard car in its current condition. Some sections look long overdue a grader.

I'll put a Google map at the end of these articles for anyone wondering where that is. A bit of a trawl through trove brought up a series of references to the wealth of the Brindabella gold fields...

Cautious I would describe the first report in 1864...

Queanbeyan Age and General Advertiser - Thursday 13 October 1864

National Library of Australia

Followed by an update a few days later...

Queanbeyan Age and General Advertiser - Thursday 20 October 1864

National Library of Australia

12 years later the mood dipped a bit...

Queanbeyan Age - Wednesday 10 May 1876

However 6 years later the area is officially declared a gold field...

Queanbeyan Age (NSW : 1867 - 1904), Tuesday 3 October 1882

National Library of Australia (full description)

An article from the Age entitled Mr. Garvan's visit to Queanbeyan, Mac's Reef and Brindabella. I've cut the Brindabella reference out but the entire article is a good read. Of particular interest is the emergence of a Mr. William Reid in 1888...

Queanbeyan Age - Thursday 29 March 1888

In this video in his Alpine Stories series Richard interviews Dr Linda Broome, the world's leading authority on the rare Mountain Pygmy Possum (Burramys parvus) which lives above the Australian snowline.

Interviewed at the Perisher ski resort (blue cow) they discusses the life cycle and habitat of the animal. Diet, ecosystem and the efforts being undertaken to preserve the species and the threats that they face today.

On a side note a different but similar species, the Eastern Pygmy Possum, (Cercartetus nanus) was re-discovered in July last year in Namadgi National Park (post here). Both the Eastern and Mountain Pygmy Possum go into temporary hibernation during the winter. I think they are very similar but I'm sure there are many differences.

I present to you the Mountain Pygmy Possum Pt 1...
If you like Richard's style he produced a series on Canberra's history called the Stakeout of Canberra which I highly recommend also.
We arrived at Smokers Trail and decided to walk down an old forestry trail to a wide gully with a small un-named creek at the bottom. Lovely area.

How do I know that its an un-named creek? I'll digress enough to promote a map available at the Namadgi Visitors Center. Its called the Rooftop's Namadgi - ACT South Activities Map. For those technical its a 1:50,000 map with 20m contours.

It was also apparently compiled by a bloke that walked every walking track in the Australian Capital Territory with a GPS strapped to his head. It is double sided with the northern half on one side and the southern half on the other.

Anyway everything is marked, roads, tracks, walking trails and places of interest with a brief description. It also has point to point distance markers which is particularly useful. I can't recommend it highly enough but its only available at the visitors center. Cost about $12.

Back on track... I had noticed a few weeks ago pig diggings on the little flat below the Square Rock walking trail car park. I didn't think much of it until I read the TAMS media release on the success of their control program and I thought well not above Corin Forest...

“The latest data reveals that 9.6% of test plots set up in Namadgi showed some evidence of feral pig activity, down from 17.65% in 2008. These results demonstrate a significant and sustained reduction in both pig numbers and impact,”

“Feral pig activity is monitored using 500 plots across Namadgi. The plots measure the amount of impact damage caused by pigs and gives an estimate of the population.

“This long term monitoring and evaluation program, which has been running since the mid-1980s, is essential to Namadgi’s evidence based management of introduced pests. Eradication is not feasible or possible, so control programs aim to achieve a sustained reduction in the damage caused by feral pigs"

It was also reported by ABC News but a much better article was written in The Canberra Times. My thoughts... Well I don't think its a statistic that holds true with observation...

Back to last night... As we approached the creek we stopped in our tracks as a large black pig crossed the narrow track not 10m before us, It was followed a few seconds later by two more pigs. We were rooted to the spot and could hear the vegetation crash and watch it part as they made their way.

Thinking we were in the clear a succession of piglets then emerged to cross also. Two distinct sizes, obviously from different litters. All black except one brown one. Still fine until the final dawdling piglet spots us and starts squealing. At this time we then hear a large pig coming back. Crashing, swaying vegetation. The piglet at this point regained enough composure to run after its mother and meeting up resumed their previous and thankfully different course.

That was on nightfall. And it got me curious...

Later in the evening we decided to take the thermal vision gear to the place I had seen the diggings, the little flat at Square Rock car park where at 10 pm as well as 20 odd Kangaroos was the thermal shapes of at least 4 pigs happily rooting around. Both these locations are 5 or 6 kms apart.

Corin forest is signposted as being baited with 1080. So it must be one of the 500 test plots. From my experiences yesterday I can say that it's not very effective. Perhaps that's why they say "eradication is not feasible or possible". I think the success is over reported, at least around Corin.
Although it is widely publicised that next year marks the 100th anniversary of Lady Denmen formally declaring Canberra as the Nation's Capital, it was however, first ‘discovered’ 92 years before that. By this reckoning Canberra turns 200 in 2021.

Now some will argue that Canberra did not exist before 1913 but I can reference dozens of articles referring to Canberra as Canberra decades before Lady Denman’s declaration. Today’s Canberra has thousands of descendants from Canberra’s pre federation rural past and it is these families who lose out in some respects in depicting a true and accurate history of Canberra.

For the nation perhaps the unveiling of a stone in 1913 marked nationhood, the capitals centenary but as for Canberra itself it was just another milestone to an area with its origins in our colonial past. If you really want to be pedantic European colonisation was just a milestone in an ancient Ngambri past.

I’ve argued this point in the past about what the origin of the name Canberra is? From research I can tell you it is everything from ‘a woman’s breasts’, 'meeting place', to even a suggestion of an old man’s ‘Canned berries’ and several others (just search naming on the right or my labels) but I think I know the true meaning and I think it can be derived by phonetics.

This is how I think it happened…

The traditional owners of the ACT are the Ngambri people. When the first settlers asked the name of the place they were told Ngambri. The first settlers called their first sheep station Canberry (the European phonetics). Canberry, Canburry, Kamberra, morphed through the St Johns church records into Canberra.

= phonetics: Ngambri, Canberry, Canberra

That’s how simple I think it was for the name of Canberra to originate. Anyway… I’ve drifted off on a tangent. I’m not all that excited about the upcoming celebrations as I am sure most non Canberrans are either.

Canberra’s history is not all about Prime Minister Fisher, King O’Malley and Lady Denman and the foundation stones for a city. By that reckoning we shouldn’t really be celebrating till 2027 the centenary of Parliament’s opening in Canberra. That’s the nationhood stuff.

It has been a ramble but I think as a Canberra community we short change our selves by limiting our history to the ‘red bricks’ churned out by the Yarralumla brickworks. There is so much more…
I've been spending time in Namadgi National Park enjoying a new hobby of recording animal and bird noises.

It's a fairly simple procedure involving a voice activated recorder (the dictaphone type) an external lapel microphone and a little plastic for weatherproofing.

Depending on the amount of bird chatter and the quality (expense) of batteries used the recorder can run for around three days and can record anywhere between a minute of recording if there is not much activity and two and a half hours on a good session.

A piece of agricultural pipe protects the recorder and is fixed horizontally on a tree and the microphone leads to an upturned cup suspended as high as I can reach above the ground. I have managed to record some extended sound files of a few different native species who's calls seem to me to be more chorus like in the bush. No interfering noises from surrounding suburbs and a wider variety of species.

Having said all that this post is not about bird recordings. Its about two recordings that have me baffled. The first was recorded in November in the dead of night. Now everyone is going to think I'm nuts but the first recording involves what seems to be 'knocking' noises that must have been made by 'something'.

There are a series of loud knocks that sound, to me at least, like rocks or stones knocking together. Could be natural but having spent many, many nights over the years in the mountains I can't put my finger on the source. I have heard the 'cracking' of granite exfoliation (Rocks in the park peeling somewhat like an onion) in Namadgi, ,a distinctive sound, and trees and limbs fall but this is nothing like it. You may be able to identify it...

Night knocking sound file

The second recording over New Years was just as weird but different... a tentative tampering of the microphone that was suspended 7 feet above the ground on a thin sapling (that wouldn't have supported a possums weight) and the unmistakable sound of 'breathing' into the microphone cup. I am interested in knowing what 7 foot tall animals we have with a delicate touch roaming the park...

Day tamper / breathing recording

Just seemed odd enough to perhaps be interesting...

Namadgi National Park comprises 106,095 hectares, over a thousand square kilometres, with some valleys and ravines not seeing humans for decades.

Now not to scare the kiddies but who really knows what's out there? A friend of mine may have discovered a new glowing insect in a national park nearby. They fly, glow several colours and can (occasionally) be photographed on trail cameras taking pictures continuously every one second.

As yet though a commercial 'bug catcher' has been unsuccessful. CSIRO can't identify a glowing species there and can't help further without a specimen. Not everything is known of the mountains yet I am sure. It has a few secrets to reveal even in the 21st century. Anyway... the things I do to entertain myself.

Strange stuff happens in Namagi... Happy camping!

Happy new year! 2012 a year before our capital's centenary. I took a real shine to learning Canberra's real history on April 21st 2010 when I visited the Aboriginal grinding grooves of Theodore. Things went from there...

For those of you who don't know I have had a lifelong struggle with Bipolar Affective Disorder Type 1. I live a calm medicated life today but it wasn't always that way. I digress... I do however still endure the fluctuations of mania and depression. It is always a plus when a mania co-insides with a normalish (is there such a word) activity of interest. So learning about Canberra's rich history has helped me through many high and low times in the past year and a half and I think it has been a beneficial experience.

However, apart from what pops up, I think I have earned my degree in Canberra history and feel a bit over rehashing the same knowledge to a new audience over and over. I didn't expect my private mania to blow out to 450 individual posts and I am gob-smacked at those past posts pulling 10,000 page views a month today. I have no way of maintaining the collection nor the inclination or will to do so. So I'll just leave them there for the school kids, it's time to move on.

I spend a lot of time in the ACT bush. Not the nature reserves, the thick stuff. Three quarters of the ACT is National Park and I find because of the nature of the average Canberran I can find solitude in our high country. I have taken to making sound recordings of the forest and am intrigued at the various species of bird and animal I am able to record.

Harmless stuff but I have been enjoying travelling to more and more remote places. It really is a beautiful place to be. So I'm spending more time pouring over google maps, learning food sources and planning outings than trawling Trove. I think if you continue reading you will see a different ACT focus emerge on my blog.

I run into enough natural wonders today in the ACT to make that my new years focus. Just having this little fox stalk my sausages on nightfall for 15 minutes reminded me of the importance of what's happening in the present and that perhaps I dwelt too much on the past. Not healthy for me.

So always armed with a camera I might be able to open some's eyes to the magnificence of Canberra's Mountains. I will still report on what 'pops up' historically but it is no longer my passion. I am actually more interested today in the unreported Aboriginal wars.

I thought I owed readers here an explanation... I'll probably keep blogging (its a hobby) but the ACT focus has changed for me personally. Life's an adventure and I'm dragging myself away from the history books into the real world and hopefully I'll come across some interesting stuff this year to share on this blog.

Happy 2012... Cheers Dave.
A search of the newspaper archives comes up short when it comes to new years eve.

This comes from the year prohibition was lifted in Canberra. Yes, thanks to King O'Malley our tea-total Minister for home affairs of the day Canberra was once a dry town 1913- 1929. If you wanted a beer you went to Queanbeyan. Simple. Well this clipping is a testament to Canberra's festivities with the train load of empties that left for Sydney after Christmas/ New years 1929...
Apologies for any past indiscretions and yes I do know the cells at the city watch house from many years ago.. After 50 years I must have annoyed a few. I can only imagine today 250 men being arrested for drunkenness though. I didn't realise this was a poem when I started reading it... I like it.
I would just like to wish all the readers of my little history blog a wonderful Christmas season. A time of joy, giving and hopefully relaxation as we look forward to 2012 and the countdown to Canberra's centenary. All the best. Many newspapers ran an article written by James Edmound, Editor of the Sydney Bulletin. It was 1919 just 6 years after the Canberra naming ceremony and it seemed there was still a lot of criticism of the new capital.

Lots of reports about this issue but this one is fairly representative I think. The article starts with some advocacy for establishing large population centres above the Tropic of Capricorn and apparent staunchness for the White Australia Policy. Apart from pointing out some sort of geographical gripe about Canberra the author gets down to some pretty fine 'Canberra bashing'. I'll leave you to read it. I'm off for a walk around the lake...
These reports usually don't interest me but in this case I'll make an exception. A clipping from the old days when divorces became really messy...

Sometimes I have a wicked sense of humour and I found this amusing. Apparently divorce was a very public matter. Anyway... Mr Read goes to extreme lengths to catch his philandering wife and lover, employs some spy tactics to read love letters, threatens murder and eventually has the wife's lover pay the court costs... The 50's version of reality TV. Priceless...
We all know this of course but it is interesting to me that the decision wasn't made until 14 years after the naming of the new city of Canberra. In 1927 it was announced that Canberra's street names would be named after Australian explorers, statesman, pioneers and discoverers. Streets already named would be re-named in accordance with the new policy. Another interesting point is that all these Australians honoured with a street sign must already be dead...

I'm becoming quite surprised at the number of local reports of a hairy man living in the mountains. Called a 'Yahoo' in the day but we probably know them today as Yowies. Bredbo is a small village located on the Monaro Highway between Canberra and Cooma but the area sits parallel to the southernmost region on the ACT.

Anyway I find them interesting and I think I'll start a collection of 'hairy man' clippings...

A little hard to read at first this article describes the southern mountainous regions of the ACT in particular the Gudgenby, Nass and Ororral Rivers. A nice description of the old-time hardships of travelling into a region that is today about a half hours drive out of suburban Canberra. A tale of river crossings, horseflesh and pioneers. The suggestion is the Territory's appropriateness as a tourist resort. A lovely description I think...
Just a quick one...

I had an interesting encounter in Namadgi on nightfall yesterday. Stopped to eat and after a whistle got a visit from a young red fox. He/she was fearless and obviously very hungry, It didn't look to be in very good condition. Entry to the area has been signposted as being baited with 1080 poison yet here was this young fox and dogs could be heard barking in the distance as the night wore on.

This fox was determined though and warily stalked around the camp within meters. Around and around looking for some opportunity. Anyway... dogs are my only annoying fear out there at night. I have had experiences with them in the past and 1080 obviously isn't removing that worry. I don't like to feel like I've entered the food chain when I bushwalk.

Yes I am getting soft, and hang me TAMS, it got a couple of sausages.

Apart from this being a nice description of Canberra's flowering trees I found it interesting when read in conjunction with another clipping from 13 years later that saw a time requiring the killing of 2000 possums from within a mile of the Canberra city centre. (post here). Now it all makes sense.

I couldn't fathom why 1945 saw the breaking point of a massive possum infestation until I read this article waxing lyrically to the joys of fruit tree blossoms from 50,000 almond, peach and plum trees planted in Canberra a decade before. I know the new city wanted quick growth and colour to enhance its garden city image, and the native wattle was probably a good choice, but as far as possums go it wasn't thought through very well at all.
I was reading on a local forum the other day the laments of chicken owners in suburban Canberra backyards of the perils of an unsecured pen and the feral fox. Sounded like Canberra is rife with foxes quite prepared to poach any chicken left unattended and accessible. Problems of a bush capital I suppose.

In my youth I shot a lot of foxes. That might seem harsh but there were a lot of them and a pelt was worth up to 40 dollars. So out of interest a bit of a search revealed that the wily fox has been influencing Canberra society for a while. Remember this is feral pest not Basil Brush. This report from 106 years ago indicates how foxes were dealt with before canberra became the capital...

This was pretty much my experience with foxes. Every year same numbers...

The conditions of the pelts were poor in 1948 influencing fox shooters determination I'm sure. I can remember the reason we stopped shooting foxes was that after the anti-fur campaign in the 80's prices dropped to $4 a pelt. Before that the Qeanbeyan buyer used to average pelts at $28...

There is no fox shooting going on in the ACT that I am aware of but I note areas on Corin Road have been baited with 1080 (Sodium flourocetate) They wouldn't do that in the Canberra Nature Parks I suspect. Well I think that tells a bit of a story on the influences of foxes in the capital and at the end of the day I think people are just going to have to learn to keep their chickens in Canberra very secure.
Ok we're three years into a Canberra with a resident parliament. Residents of the newly formed territory were denied rights of suffrage whilst nearby residents in NSW such as Queanbeyan retained all their commonwealth privileges. Enter the 'Vigilants of Canberra'. A society where Territory members identities were kept secret for fear of reprisals being represented by a Dr Alcorn in the capacity of liason person. I don't know what became of them but I suppose they were the forerunners of the self government the ACT not acquired till the 80's. The notion had to be started somewhere I reckon. Why not the Vigilants of Canberra?
The following is an obituary for a Mr A.A McKeahnie, grazier, magistrate, coroner and captain of the rifle club. As the headline claims, he was the first white child born in Queanbeyan but his holdings included Gudgenby Station and several other estates. His life's tale includes encounters with 'savage' Aboriginals, as opposed to friendly, and bushrangers. Interesting bloke. He was a true pioneer in every sense of the word I think. For more information on Booroomba I have a post here.
Coppins Crossing is a low level bridge which crosses the Molonglo River. The following may be of interest when next you cross. There isn't a great deal of reports mentioning the crossing but what there is is interesting I think. Originally it seems it was used as a range for artillery in world war 1 by the boys from Duntroon. Interesting also that they halted firing for passing traffic and not the other way around...
Just a quick one... Another entry to the Naming of Canberra collection of old newspaper clippings. It's not a unique view of Canberra's original meaning as Aboriginal 'A woman's breasts' describing Mount Ainsley and Black Mountain are common but interesting because of naming the Canberra Plain 'Nugungahleen' and mentioning a 'tribal phallic stone' nestled in a recess on Black Mountain...
Looking at news clippings of a famous ACT rural property with a colourful history. Booroomba is an operating property today located near the village of Tharwa. The tale begins with reference to Booroomba Station's first two owners, originally William Davis who experienced trouble with bushrangers and the McKeahnie family from 1859...
Following on from yesterday, a poem from 70 years ago by Annie McDonald describing the Uriarra Crossing in western Canberra. The crossing is today a popular road linking Belconnen and Western Creek for those who like the road less travelled. Anyway its a lovely poem I think and another one for the collection. For those that missed it yesterdays post looked at 30 years of Uriarra's history...
