I believe your children, friends, homes and possessions somehow magically find you in your life. This sounds like heresy to the shopping population, as we do a great deal of scouring in dusty corners. I always believe, when I open an old folio of photographs, that I will see somebody that I once knew, and I have. Underneath it all, shoppers are snoops. In all my Nancy Drew and Harriet the Spy fantasies, when I fall into a search coma, I am solving a mystery, connecting dots and looking for clues. If you have been with me for awhile, you will know my Father's adage: "Train your eye dear."

I saw this pretty little French table, when I walked in the door. For $200.00+. It is cheaper than a dress and is a great character accent with nice, old cast fittings. It will work somewhere, and the price is right.

This is a very lovely 18th century French chest, that is not a steal in the $3,000.00 range, but a fair price. While we are training our eye, this dealer had some really unusual French and English chairs.

We are looking at charming, old, stripped chairs that have lost their collectible value, since they are not in original condition. They are artfully designed, hand carved, and remain outside of the usual style genres. With sensitive restoration, you have unique, affordable, antique chairs for the same price as premium modern chairs, albeit a tad smaller.

This set of mid-century wrought iron chairs should clean up beautifully. I love patina like the rest of us, but they will fall apart if the rust is not addressed. They are so festive, they brought a smile to my face.

This is a very large cartoon: "A cartoon is a form of two-dimensional illustrated visual art. While the specific definition has changed over time...... Cartoons were typically used in the production of frescoes, to accurately link the component parts of the composition when painted on damp plaster over a series of days (giornate). Such cartoons often have pinpricks along the outlines of the design; a bag of soot was then patted or "pounced" over the cartoon, held against the wall to leave black dots on the plaster ("pouncing"). Cartoons by painters, such as the Raphael and examples by Leonardo da Vinci, are highly prized in their own right."(Merriam Webster's Dictionary). I was very drawn to this piece, but did not have enough background on the subject to pull the trigger, even though the price was moderately alluring for the size and look. It is worthwhile to take photographs and notes when you shop. Next time, I'll look for pinpricks and soot.

Antique fairs are without a doubt the place to purchase linen. Vintage, home-made linens are inexpensive and have much more character and charm, to me, than new linen.

I already have enough vintage linens, so they are not calling my name, but: Note to self--get them out of the closet and into the house!!

Forgive the dreadful picture. This is the iconic McGuire dining table from the '70's. It is a steal at $2,200.00 dollars. The original owners paid well more than that for this table. I don't have a client for it, but I did--sigh.

I had never seen intaglios in book form before, but I was told, this is a classic 19th century Grand Tour souvenir. There are two wooden pages of plaster casts depicting scenes from antiquity, with detailed notations. They were going for about $500.00 per book. They are cool, but not my thing--yet.

An unquestionably, stunning pair of sterling and horn vases flank a ceramic Stilton cheese holder. They are Victorian, beautiful, and $1,700.00. I want them--admire them, but I am not buying them. Horns are everywhere, in different forms, these days--thank you Miles Redd.

You would think there were no church's left in Europe with the Ecclesiastical candles and Saints everywhere. For $300.00 a pop I thought these French altar sticks were gorgeous with plenty of bang for the buck, so they are mine!

I think they are the perfect addition to daughter number 1, blowing bubbles when she was two. She's a cute one. I bought them from Shelton Davis out of St. Louis.

He also had this fabulous Meerschaum pipe. The first recorded use of this material is in 1723, and these pipes are valued to this day for providing a cool, dry, flavorful smoke. I live in Winston Salem, so I could not resist sharing.

I covet this charming pair of Bohemian amethyst glass vases, attributed to Mary Gregory. Mary Gregory is something of a mystery, and has become a catch-all term for the technique of painting children with layers of enamel on colored glass. The older, 19th century pieces are lighter in weight than the modern machine molded examples. They make terrific lamps. While we are on the subject of children...

Am I a sap? This sentimental little fellow and his dog were $200.00. I love the motion and of course his pudgy cheeks. We admired it, but kept moving.

I don't need to tell anybody what this is. It sold for $14,000.00, owing to its excellent condition. I've seen them at a price range of $7,000-$36,000. If you've got one, take it out of the attic and flaunt it. Or, sell it.

I was very taken with this tea set, offered for $525.00. This is Arthur Wood Silver Shield: black transfer resembling tree bark with silver luster rim, incised rings, raised shield and accents on the spout and handle. The spout, handle and finial are molded and hand painted to resemble stag horns. The real excitement begins here:

This dealer also had a set of 4 stunning original Gouaches by Prince Fritz von WINDISCH-GRAETZ (German, 20th Century). My Mother has a beautiful pair of them in her living room, that she inherited from her Father.

I grew up admiring English sporting art and military equestrian prints and paintings. My Grandfather had a brilliant eye for art and brain for negotiating. The title is: "Alexander The Great Drum Horse of the Life Guards," and is signed and dated 1966. Drum horses are Clydesdale mixes, as they must be able to carry considerable regalia. It measures approximately 2.5' by 1.75' The frames are wood carved with reverse painted glass matting. The frames are typical for this artist and certainly came out of his studio.

Here is a detail of my second Gouache. I do love the uniforms and beautiful harnesses.

So, for $200.00 each, I have interesting original, listed artist paintings that have meant something to my family. Imagine my surprise when I came across this!

It is close to impossible to get a picture depicting the engraving. This is the trophy for The Santa Anita Handicap. Darn, if I'd seen it first thing in the morning, I would not have made any purchases. But, I had to have it, since my Grandfather created this race. It is also called the "Big Cap" or the "Hundred Grander." 73 Handicap trophies have been awarded, so I called Mary Saenz, who has been with Santa Anita for over 40 years, to discuss my coup. The dealer was told that the cup was purchased from a Getty estate. The only Getty to win the Handicap has been Jacqueline Getty Phillips, with Bates Motel in 1983.

Mary Saenz, has a nimble memory. It is a Queen Anne cup, and based on the engraver, materials, and the fact that it does not have a lid, she agreed that the trophy could have been circa 1983 for Bates Motel. The stories lined up. I am such a super Nancy Drew sleuth. What is more strange, is that I was actually at that race. I am sure I didn't win a dime. So, things do have a perfect way of finding their way into your home. Thank You for the Christmas money Mom!! I had a ball agonizing and spending.

Christmas, Boxing Day and New Years Celebrations at Home

Now that we've packed up the tree, decorations and our Christmas merriment, I want to share some of our holiday traditions. We take our gifts very seriously and open them very s-l-o-w-l-y, in the dining room, over the sacred strata breakfast,

one-at-a-time.
Thoughtfully chosen books were the theme for this year's exchange.

For a special friend of our family, I choose this spectacularly written book. Everybody needs a strong dose of wit, so I recommend Cecil Beaton without reserve.

While I found Bemelman's prints to be a tad steep, for my neighbor and dear friend, I was able to procure a title that illustrates my great affection. The Episodes from the life of Lady Mendl (Elsie de Wolfe), combines one of my favorite illustrators with a favorite designer.

I was lucky enough to receive this special volume from my second daughter.

Dorothy Rodgers makes me feel like I've done absolutely nothing with my life. She was one of the early domestic divas, as a writer, inventor (the Jonny Mop, dress paterns and children's educational books), and decorator. She sat on numerous charitable boards, was a famous homemaker, entertainer and had a radio show. The wild success of her composer husband, Richard Rodgers, never dampened her work ethic or drive. Speaking of which... I bought myself this spectacular chronicle, at the opposite end of the spectrum.

I must say, this crowd displayed a great amount of energy and enthusiasm for dressing, entertaining and intrigues. I am most impressed by the collage, society journals of The Baron de Cabrol.

Our humble decorations, pale in comparison to Cafe Society, and I adhere to my oldest and dearest friend's Mother's floral adage: "arrangements should never be tortured." She is, after all a Garden Club of America blue ribbon winner.

This year the Santa's gifts did not fit the stocking, so to speak. He, left them a tad sloppily on the floor. What can you do? He is almost as bad as our absent minded tooth-fairy, but I digress.

Here is our swirly tree. The girls have been complaining about the lack of garland over the past few years, so I reinstated it. Note, no theme. The spaghetti goes on the wall. What is not broken-sticks to the tree.

Our latest, annual tradition is our Boxing Day Brunch. It is a casual respite from all the dress up. My specialty is a comforting spinach, mushroom, sausage and gruyere strata that is a combination of two recipes from America's test kitchen. While I have my favorite, and most elaborate decorations of the year, not to mention left overs, I like to have a small group for New Year's dinner. It consoles me after the girlies depart.

Well, after the nine bright days of the New Year, I send you my new 2012 discoveries.

This is Mrs. H.'s tree, it is more fabulous every year.
Here are some good secrets:
*String your lights from the inside out and use miles of it
*Have a ridiculous amount of ornaments, that are interesting and special to your life
*Great Christmas trees are like great charm bracelets--buy Christmas ornaments when you go on trips. A great Christmas tree is unique and personal.

My friend, Mrs. K. has generations of ornaments on her tree. Her house is the perfect example of stylishly mixing different era's. You do not get a room like this, like instant oatmeal. It takes several generations.

I too have this modern creche. All the faces of the adoration figures were people the artist (sadly deceased) knew. You can't see it, but Jesus has the cutest pudgy toes.

Mrs. K., her Grandmother and her Mother celebrated all the art and style of their time. The secret is... that good taste, in any age goes with everything--high and low!!
Nobody does it better!

The Best Farm Ever Celebrates Thanksgiving with Family and Friends

If you've been following Dovecote Decor for a good while, you remember The Best Farm Ever post. My friend is an epic hostess/organizer of weekend parties for family and friends. Watch how this stunning family dinner table evolves. Mrs. R. sets the table with her bamboo party chairs that she can stack away when the pool table isn't covered.

Small arrangements in mint julep cups, make it easy to divide the flowers, and punctuate the long table, without obstructing conversation. Mrs. R. chose a perfect assortment of simple parrot tulips, daisies and berries to complement the Holiday motif.

The added dimension of the floating sunflowers is brilliant. Sunflowers are hard to work with in arrangements, yet floating in reflective round globes they add a layer of beauty and shine, to a wide table--note to self.

The Hurricane lanterns, with orange candles repeat the floral refrain. Low votives scattered along the table glow, adding light and reflection to the beautiful reflective glass and silver.

My definition of creativity is: mental flexibility. Creating a billiards room, that doubles for dining, is more than smart. Honestly, we play a bit of pool, but we eat more often. Don't be intimidated, be organized and flexible. If you have to add a little table at the end of the table, do it. Do not send the youngest to the children's table if you can avoid it.

Thanksgiving is our unique American, family holiday, let everybody contribute. Yes, be organized, but let the wild rumpus of cooking begin. This way, everybody shines and shares traditions, recipes and techniques--it is going to make a mess.

There will be arguments, and things might get burned, gravy might not thicken, but if you expect family time to be, what it usually amounts to, you will laugh and carry on for years, with the gossip and memories. Then, we all do the same crazy thing all over again.

More baking

You've got to have crackers and wear funny hats.

Before dinner, Champagne and Kelley's caviar announce the commencement of the evening. This is delicious American, Tennessee caviar, for a fraction of the price.

The dining room is set for serving. The walls are painted with vistas of the surrounding land.

When it is only family, better to dress for the occasion, it brings out the best in us. The children tuck in first.

On Friday, here come the friends. Thanksgiving is football.

The barn is ready for the onslaught of parents and children. Roberta Freymann fabrics in multiple colors and patterns work perfectly together and look wonderful with the Mexican tiled coffee table. The bold ethnic graphic is what this great wood swathed space needs--more notes to self.

A 26 year old diplomat, negotiates a complex Monopoly summit of 4-14 year olds. The little ones cannot add up their cash. (This photo was taken at a different party last winter).

Sal Ajro brings delicous wood fired pizza.

Do you see the fire in this drum? They not only warm the bones, but smell deliciously of fall. I would love a pair of these in my courtyard.

They do double duty as planters.

This is the other side of the barn with curtains along the covered terrace that close in the winter to make a large festive dining space. What could be better than eating outside in the winter with two roaring fires?

Our Paris Trip: Day One Tour

The Hotel du Pantheon was our fortunate hotel choice. Nestled in the heart of the Latin Quarter, in a charming 18th century building, we arrived before check in, yet were generously accommodated with two out of our 3 rooms.

We were delighted by the country French style lobby and the warm welcome and assistance we received from the extremely helpful staff.

Our rooms were utterly charming, though small. I had excellent clothing storage, and the bathrooms were roomy, modern, beautifully tiled and immaculate.

The girls rooms could have used better lighting, but I find that to be true in many hotels. The beamed ceilings, traditional French fabrics and sensational views of the Pantheon and its lively square, made our little nests a true home away from home. Our rooms averaged around $258.00 per night, which we found to be completely reasonable.

Our mission was to join sister #3 and share her Paris highlights while she was on her Junior semester abroad. We charted a path to lunch on the Ile Saint Louis, via Notre Dame to meet up with our precious girl. Alba Rosa from Brilliante blog recommended the Brasserie de l'lle Saint Louis, for its terrific views of the Seine and the flying buttresses behind Notre Dame. Alas, it was shuttered so we selected the Cafe Saint Regis nearby and caught up.

Believe it or not, this was our path for day one--all five and a half miles of it! The red marker is our hotel, the gray marker is our lunch spot, followed by le musee de l'Orangerie and the Cafe de Flore. We proceeded to the right bank marveling at every turn.

Before we crossed over to the Islands, this pair of intellectuals posed in front of the Chapelle de la Sorbonne, the University's domed church, which was built between 1635 and 1642. It was commissioned by Cardinal de Richelieu who employed the architect Jacques Lemercier to build the church, dedicated to Saint Ursula, in Roman Baroque and Renaissance style.

Crossing over the bridge from the Boulevard St. Michelle in the Latin Quarter, the uniform Haussmann facades create a palatial illusion. Blocks resemble one grand edifice versus the reality of many smaller buildings. It is believed that Haussmann rebuilt 60% of the city of Paris, a dramatic feat of urbanization. Here are some of the dictates of the Haussmann aesthetic:

Ground floor and basement with thick, usually street-lateral, load-bearing walls;

second, "noble" floor with one or two balconies;

third and fourth floors in the same style but with less elaborate stonework around the windows;

fifth floor with a single, continuous, undecorated balcony--eaves angled at 45º.

"The Haussmann façade is organised around horizontal lines that often continue from one building to the next: balconies and cornices are perfectly aligned without any noticeable alcoves or projections. At the risk of the uniformity....the rue de Rivoli served as a model for the entire network of new Parisian boulevards." Wikipedia

Napoleon III, engaged Haussmann to renovate Paris after visiting London. Impressed by the vast parks, and open spaces, he wanted to rid Paris of its unsanitary Medieval, narrow maze-like streets. Politically, it was duly noted at the time, the military advantage to the government, in the creation of long, wide boulevards. The military could easily defend these grand transits and control a city chronically plagued by insurrection. The vast and famous sewer system was simultaneously installed, with exquisitely engineered aqueducts and reservoirs for fresh water. Train stations were linked strategically throughout the city. After lunch, we tumbled beneath square of Notre Dame to see the excavations of the original settlement of the Parisi.

On the square in front of Notre Dame you can take a look at km 0 (“Kilometre Zero”), from which all distances in France are measured, and nearby, you will find the entrance to La Crypte Archéologique – Archaeological Museum.

This original, subterranean settlement of the Celtic Parisi, is a logical beginning. It takes about 30 minutes, and gives you a sense of the ancient roots of the city and the strategic aspects of the island.

We head along the right bank, and our Parisian girl strategically walks us through the beautiful flower markets.

Contemporary Parisian shops look a great deal like the stalls at High Point.

Our tour guide tucked us in a side entrance to the Louvre for this dramatic view of I.M. Pei's pyramids.

I'm not kidding, Mr. Potato Head, kept jumping us throughout our stroll through the Tuileries.

The Louvre was an overwhelming challenge for day 1, so we headed over to the Musee de l'Orangerie to see the spectacular Claude Monet water lillies. Monet gifted the paintings to the city to create an oasis in a chaotic modern world. Two oval rooms are dedicated to Monet's obsession with shifting light and reflection. We were completely stunned out of our exhaustion.

My Lilly pads were killing me, so as we strolled back to the hotel through Saint Germaine, the most important of the Haussmann boulevards, the girls tucked me in for a cup of delicious tea at the historic Cafe de Flore.

On our way to dinner, one of the girls instantly recognized the steps from Midnight in Paris, just around the corner from the Pantheon. We waited patiently for our carriage to the past.

We found the past, at L'Ecurie. Complimentary aperitifs and digestifs were served with fresh bread and delicious aioli. The pate was delicious, and I would say our meat courses were O.K. It is tiny, so you need to go early and bring cash, or be prepared to walk down the hill to the Chinese ATM.

The beautiful view from my hotel window was a magical ending to our first day.

Table Settings of Holidays Past

As many of you know, the girls, with boyfriends in tow, and I are going to Paris for the Thanksgiving Holiday. It feels strange, not to be home decorating and cooking with family and friends, but I made a surprisingly swift adjustment. I was looking back at some of our photos of parties and decorations and thought it would be fun to share them with you.

I collect antique staffordshire transferware. These surgar bowls are wonderful for mantel arrangements. With scotch tape I create a grid to support the bouquet.

I used an April Cornell plaid table cloth for this wintery occasion.

Several years ago, a friend made an arrangement like this for our Thanksgiving table. The following year I put this one together. It's a very simple and quick fix when you are cooking a big dinner.

In Spring, we use more pinks, but I almost always use pinks and oranges together in arrangements.

This arrangement was for a BookMarks event in town. I used oasis and chicken wire to secure the height of the branches and flowers.

For the authors reception this fall I raided my neighbor's garden and supplemented with grocery store flowers. I am a fearless entertainer, and often experiment on my guests. I don't worry about flowers being perfect, because I cannot stand tortured flowers.

On a Springier note, I used the Staffordshire again in three low arrangements along the table. I often use my vegetable terrines in the server behind for delicious cold summer soups.

Working in the breezeway keeps the mess out of the house.

Entertaining at the Morten house is always a group effort. I ask friends to bring their signature dish. These generous offerings were beyond delicious! While we are on the topic, I want to show you my friend's supernaturally, beautiful cakes.

Charlotte Glover, has recently started Magnolia Cake and Confections in Stuart Florida. She was visiting me overnight, when she was recently in North Carolina for yet, another cake workshop. These cakes will bring tears to your eyes. We spent all evening going through her photographs and looking at all her magnificent eye candy.

This is when I completely lost it!

She literally sculpts and hand paints each flower from sugar. Her attention to detail is amazing. She is not playing with her food, she is elevating it to new dimensions!

I am so proud of Charlotte's gifts. Tell all your Florida friends about her!

Fashion and Decor Boldly Collide - Equestrian Style endures

This fall, New York City and High Point collide in their adoration of all things equestrian. Fashion has been head over heels for riding motif boots, pants, dresses and luxurious accessories. Many of the major interior designers raised the bar for new takes on tradition.

America's queen, stylishly passed equestrian scarlet fever, into a fashion addicted population. Fashionista, interior designer, Julie Browning Bova (below), merges her passion for equestrian attire and interiors, with her line for Stanford Furniture. Horse lovers, and design hounds, dive into her blog and website, its beautiful.

You can't discuss equestrian without getting the boot. This year the tall boot has continued to reign supreme. Tory Burch and Ralph Lauren cleverly illustrate how a riding boot can become an essential part of any one's wardrobe. Add an Hermes, Gucci, or J. McLaughlin scarf into the mix and you'll be riding though the holidays looking ridiculously refined.

Classic interiors, with splashes of equestrian motifs throughout, make the most of deep, rich hues and breathtaking wood accents, in Badgley Mischka's fresh: "Old, Kentucky Home."

The little black dress has entered the equestrian house. Black/Navy walls are "heavy going" to quote the Brits, yet traditional dark barn shades are space expanding while the lacquer sheen creates an oxymoronic limit. Layer this focal point campaign bar, with cut crystal decanters, and you have visual poetry.

Diamond Baratta

Plaids, spit and polish, paneling, and lanterns are elements of the equestrian style. Diamond Baratta's sensational entry, above defines the good breeding obtained through combined comfort and elegance. Ralph Lauren, the undisputed master of the hunt, is never spartan with the tartan.

Beyond the antique horse prints and vintage trunks, the use of brass adds bold character and supports this clean styling of Bagley and Mischka's guest room. This suptle use of brass is also the linchpin to the coat by O'Halloran below.

Palladian, Georgian style is synonymous with equestrian tradition. Magnificent millwork and craftsmanship transport us to the golden days of racing, and the sport of kings. Military precision commands utilitarian brass seams, lanterns and timepieces. We adore this kitchen and challenge you to find us a better one.

We all love to have a chance to meet our favorite designers, and High Point was loaded with the top talent. Rizzoli, clustered the luminaries of the millenium for their book signing event. It was a huge success, as the design groupies flooded the Market Square Courtyard.

Mary McDonald engaged in conversation with each and every one of her fans who waited patiently for her stunning new book, which sold out before I could get my hands on one.

Many of my dedicated readers know that I consider Bobby McAlpine to be the genius of our era. His quiet presence and soulful approach to life, sprinkled with wit and humor dazzles me.

The elegant designer, David Easton describes his love of textiles at Safavieh. Safavieh developed a special Soumak weave to capture the handmade character of the ikat textiles Easton collects during his travels. The rugs are hand-knotted in India of 100 percent wool.

Barclay Butera, is posing in his eponymous showroom with my adorable new client, Haley. Separated at birth? Her husband built my website, and is amazing, so if you are interviewing tech support to build or alter your site--he's your man.

Thom Filicia , Genevieve Gorder of Dear Genevieve, and Francine Garder of Interieurs NYC had a joyous reunion at Capel Rugs, where Genevieve's new collection of graphic and colorful wool dhurries
took center stage. On Thom's link, his rolodex of favorite shopping haunts is a gold mine. His eco-friendly line at Safavieh was a show stopper.

Florence de Dampierre is new for me. She is a charming woman, interior designer and decorative arts historian, defining that je ne sais quois word: "insouciant." Her beautiful book, French Chic, is a revelation. This unusual transition fabric treatment puts the fun back in functional.

Two tone, graphic wood flooring, brings this girly, curvy French room down to earth.

Martyn Lawrence-Bullard's book: Live, Love and Decorate was a hit. His energetic presence bought quite a bit of sparkle into the room! He seems quite delighted with this edited wardrobe malfunction!

Suzanne Kasler, was scribbling her autograph madly for the waves of design lovers flooding the event. Her book, Inspired Interiors, was so distracting one Christmas, I could hardly open my other presents. I'm still not over her dining room.

In Interhall, in the IHFC, we ran into this glowing couple.

Lauren Liess of Pure Style Home was shopping at French Market Collection. She really is a lovely person and it comes across in her blog. The bloggy girls had a great time dining at Proximity last year. Steve Giannetti, needed to translate our social media obsessed banter to Bobby McAlpine, who is truly outside of the technological loop.

John Dransfield of Dransfield and Ross cuts a dapper profile at his eye candy space in interhall. Well, with all that name dropping, I have to admit a great fascination with this truly talented group of people who gather in High Point once a year to celebrate the ever mutating style of the home.

Even the market babies were wowed!

High Point October 2011 Trend Report

High Point really cleaned up its act, after the Mayor of Las Vegas announced that they were going to bury the International Furniture Market. It was a bold statement, considering The High Point Furniture market is the largest event in the United States, exceeding both the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras for attendance and revenue. This year, we were not disappointed as we danced our way through the B-52's sound check, attended the Rizzoli book signings, and zipped around in the "go anywhere" vans. Last October, my High Point wrap post celebrated the return of color. Gray scale, or as I like to call it: "Recession Griege," is still the entrenched mantra of many vendors, but the color trend continues to mutate from Soaring 60's preppy shades to saturated blues, greens, plums, yellows and oranges.

Hollywood regency mirrored furniture has emerged from trend to household staple. Sheen is the counterpoint to texture in a room and dominates this chic aesthetic. Lacquer, mirrors, glass, metal and high gloss finishes are the common denominator, as interiors recombine and mutate echoing the swinging single eras of the 40's and 60's. The hip pad is in. The Shabby Chic nest is going out.

Moroccan inspired mirrors and Eastern fabric combined with bold geometrics pull together this Rat Pack mid-century cocktail of a room. Fast forward, and you get Sex and the Single Girl, or...

Sex in the City!

Thomas O'Brien's show room at Hickory Chair is pure modern opulent. Glowing velvets and silks elucidate this polished aesthetic, in contrast to the drab, raw finishes of the griege era. Nail head trims tailor both the bookshelves and sofa. Savile Row is in, flea market is out.

Opulent hip is the operative description for this sophisticated vignette. Tony Duqette, perfected the rich hippie look for the 60's version of the swinging pad.

Whimsical details, layered patterns and Asian elements are all part of the Duquette "More is More" theatrical interiors. Here's how a cool pair of designers re-interpret the scene.

Shopping the look in the High Point show rooms-- Hermes Orange compliments the peacock blues and saturated greens.

Traditional Asian elements emerge in shades du jour.

Lacquer, mirror and metallic finishes combine with asian and mid-century lines to kick up the neutral palettes. This takes me back to my Azuma days.

A new twist on Carrie's desk.

Orange and gray are buffed with silvery finishes with this chic chest and geometric mirror. Graphic punch, organic forms, nickel and chrome create an alternate version of the hip pad.

Lillian August's showroom at Hickory White, was a show stopper. This small room does big things, using several large antiqued mirrors and dark paint, Lillian's pulled together eclectic sensibility strikes a sophisticated Hollywood glam chord. Are you feeling it? The look is all about seduction. Its a room where you want to steal a kiss, dance backwards in high heels, or watch a confirmed bachelor drop on one knee. Another way to add a sleek dimension is--no dimension.

Tony Duquette, the original hipster, glam, pad designer of all time, uses this lucite for a subtle layer. We have been stalking the elusive, well crafted acrylic coffee table for months. The right stuff is not plastic, it is a hefty material. It is impossible to buy it vintage from a photograph because it scratches and is hard to see. We found this little darling at market.

Notice the X base is one molded piece. We hauled this ridiculously heavy, invisible load down corridors, elevators and stairs in the IHFC--we are sore and stiff, but here it is!!

We are waiting for the new sofa, but loving the invisible acrylic coffee table.

Winston Salem is so excited by Annie Selke's visit to Belle Maison next week. I remember the first time the girls and I saw her Pine Cone Hill textile line in the early 1990's at High Point. We loved the clean, vibrant colors and patterns. The comforters are truly the coziest I've ever snuggled under. They are as beautiful in our house today, as they were 10 years ago. When the weather gets cold, I'm wrapped in Pine Cone Hill.

Every day exuberance takes me back. I can vividly remember the first time I walked into a house and saw a shocking pink sofa. It was my boyfriend's house, and his Mother was remarkably pleased. Incorporating graphic wall papers, and florals while celebrating modern design is how this style is achieved.

If you are a Refined Romantic, you may be a Taurus, lover of home and hearth. Refined Romantics treasure craftsmanship and provenance. Lose the lace and the frills, and look for objects with history, and shine. Bring in fresh flowers from the garden and add floral accents with pillows, wall papers and fabrics.

The Hampton Designer Showhouse 2011 Presented by Traditional Home

I want to share some of our favorite designers featured in the Hampton Designer Showhouse. I have a special place in my heart for Southampton Hospital, since I was taken to their emergency room in the 60's and was diagnosed with starvation--that will never happen again. I was staying at the famous old Murray-McDonnell compound, containing scores of grandchildren. They often fed us en-mass, outside, while I was engrossed with Red-Light/Green-light or, Mother May I. All of those twirling umbrella steps finally took me down. I would toss my food in the bushes, to stay in the game. Cleaving to the era, I was revived with Frosted Flakes. Things have changed.

Offered at $6,500,000, the Hamptons showcase house is a many gabled affair, with strapping design talent generating sell-out audiences. The living room was orchestrated by Lillian August designers, Skye Kirby Wescott and Angela Camarda. The room is furnished in furniture and upholstery carried by all of the five Lillian August Stores (Greenwich, CT, 2 in Norwalk CT, New York City, Los Angeles) as well as vintage finds.

I often find myself trailing behind the Lillian August buyers at High Point, and admire the abundant vintage swag that is plastered with destinations for her eponymous stores. I have been lucky enough to find some of her Hickory White pieces in Hickory, N.C. for local clients.

Showcase houses are a great place for designers to flex their creative muscles. Drama and "Wow" factor rarely translate to "normal life," but the Hamptons Designer Showhouse walks the line to perfection. The branch canopy over the living room, bringing the outside in, strikes just the right chord.

Eddie Lee's guest suite below is hip, yet still manages to be pretty. Are they mutually exclusive terms? I think not.

Eddie Lee explains:

"I designed it to be a comfortable lounge for house-guests to relax and entertain. The sofa is deep enough to double as twin beds to sleep guests with children in tow.

Decoratively, I schemed the room from the view of the pool, and the lush green foliage from the windows. The washed out versions of the colors adorn the upholstery, carpet and ceiling, with purple and gold/brass accents. I used a combination of painted French and Swedish antiques, a 1970's lucite coffee table, a 1970's Venini chandelier, mid century modern style upholstery, and contemporary art to make the space feel Hamptons appropriate, but still dynamic and youthful." If I was moving in to this house, I'd take the whole room! Fun ceilings were a motif, and Tobi Fairley's guest bedroom did not disappoint.

A fearless mixture of pattern and color, combined with bold graphics is one of Tobi Fairley's signatures. I said: "One of." She displays an operatic virtuoso, design range. You couldn't have more fun in a bedroom! Speaking of fun, going down to the basement, between the movie theater, game room and the lounge, you'll find yourself in a hip, swanky bar space by Wilhel interiors.

Auction House alums Lisa Hilderbrand and Jeanette Weldon, founders of Welhil Interiors are all about savvy shopping for their clients. The space is handsome, and welcoming, slightly masculine, and suitably nautical. The walls are covered in a reflective, lacquered paper by Farrow and Ball, and the stunning bar crystal is Saint-Louis. Dmitri and Co., created the custom banquette worthy of propping the stylish pair--Nick and Nora Charles, of The Thin Man. The classic bar is a vintage find that makes me want to dance backwards, in very high-heels. Mid-century crystal chandeliers, shiny brass accents, a Lucite tub chair, and the circa 1940 molded consoles by Paola Buffa, enhance the invitation to linger in a normally neglected space. Always put the liquor in transitional spaces. Your guests will gleefully fill the voids.

Through the hall, this sunny basement space is a delightful surprise.

Now famous, Anne Maxwell Foster and Suysel DePedro Cunnigham of Tilton Fenwick, pair luscious, mossy velvet, back to back sofas to anchor the space in a way that works surprisingly well. I imagine the grown-ups with feet propped, reading the old National Geographics, while the children run circles around them. We covered the Justin Belmont "Not a Gallery" digital painting above the Hickory chair console HERE. Note the subtle texture of the Phillip Jeffries wall paper.

I became seriously engrossed in their fantastic blog, where they share some terrific "Before" shots and renderings of the space.

With the stark vista of stone steps, this cozy space becomes a balancing counter point to the glaring light of high July in the Hamptons.

You can see how the room is grounded by the large verdigris lantern. This is a large house so we'll try to cover a few more designer interviews for you next week. More Later!!

Elevate Yourself at Penland School of Crafts!

Well, the heat is on, and if you want to elevate yourself and increase your coolness in more ways than temperature, go to Penland School of Crafts in the Great Smokey Mountains, near Asheville North Carolina. American craft work in textiles, silver, paper, metal, ceramics, photography--you name it, has been going on here, since the turn of the 20th century. It is a great story, of the right person at the right time. Initially, Penland was an Episcopalian mission school for the industrial arts, training and educating the neglected population. Miss Lucy Morgan arrived to teach, after studying weaving at Berea College, and shifted the emphasis to the traditional craft work of the area. Inspired by the Craft Revival Movement, Miss Lucy taught the mountain folk how to weave, actively marketing their goods at resorts and fairs, Miss Lucy dramatically changed lives by creating cottage industries in the region. Miss Lucy embraced the gifts of her new, impoverished community, relishing, honing and preserving their skills. She arrived with respect versus reform. It is a life lesson for all of us.

Miss Lucy is shown with Edward Worst of Chicago. Worst was a prominent member of John Dewey's Progressive Education movement, and believed that handicrafts taught as experiential education was an integral part of mental development. Fueled by reactions to the industrial revolution, the Arts and Crafts movement, instigated by William Morris and John Ruskin in England, flooded unexpected tributaries in America. To me, these kindred Pre-Raphaelites lived in a time where rules were broken and individuality reigned. The Impressionists were turning Royal Academies upside down in Europe. Frank Lloyd Wright was changing Architecture in America and Miss Lucy was training mountain folk and consumers. She was singular, creative and confident, while persuading the Episcopalian bishop to continue to back an entirely new enterprise.

You have got to love this woman as a complete force of nature for her cause. This is her traveling log cabin that she took to resorts, the Chicago Exposition, and many state fairs selling the arts of her burgeoning collective of teachers and artists, on consignment. The beauty of it all, is that her emphasis on hearth work, allowed women to supplement their family incomes while staying at home, creating handicrafts of their own designs, as artists in their own right. Today, the area surrounding the school is a vibrant artists' enclave, many of whom have been associated with Penland, with many studios open to the public. There are many others in the surrounding counties which may be visited by appointment. The gallery staff can provide you with maps and information about these artists.

I was lucky enough to watch some of the classes in progress. My favorite was the pop-up book making class, taught by Colette Fu.

My nice guide Marie shepherded me around. We lingered in glass blowing for awhile.

The gallery exhibits the work of Penland instructors and regional associated artists, where you might discover the next big collectible, or just find something that makes you happy.

Penland is a very cool place to visit or study. I'm thinking of a photography course. The countryside is breath taking, and if you are up for an event, the food, fresh from the school's vast vegetable garden is scrumptious! There is great music in the area, and Asheville is a beautiful city, with stunning old spa hotels.

New York City: Out and About with My Girls

My girls live in New York and we love stalking the elusive bargain, meal or objet. I am convinced that if I lived here, I would be thin like everybody else. When I raise my hand to hail a cab, the girls berate me: "Mom!! it's only 20 blocks!" Needless to say, I have blisters. I've managed to clock months here, thanks to the kindness of family and friends, so I want to include a round-up of some of our favorite haunts.

One of our favorite outings was to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and hit the DUMBO flea market. Brooklyn Flea, now has multiple locations, based on season and is no longer under the bridge. We have scored many a hot item there, not to mention some highly collectible art pieces, for a song. The Sloan Kettering Thrift Shop, on the Upper East Side, is a consistent source for prints and excellent quality vintage couture clothing and accessories. I have added several Kipp's views to my collection, nicely framed for under $300.00 each.

Leonard Knyff (1650 - 1721) Dutch draughtsman and painter, who collaborated with Johannes Kip to produce views of country houses and gardens for the publications, Britannia Illustrata, 1708.

I love these prints and buy them colored. To authenticate them, take them off the wall and tilt them in the light. If the paper has visible tiny ridges, that is the old paper and not a reproduction. What makes them interesting, is the accuracy and scale of the spectacular English Seats, in their milieu. These "Bird's Eye" views were done 80 years before the invention of Hot Air balloons, which makes them all the more ingenious. Some are poorly colored, avoid them. The Arthritis Foundation Thrift shop is two doors down. It is not as reliable, but worth a twirl. Walk down to Housing Works on 77th just East of 3rd Avenue. We have purchased stunning furniture there. It is counterintuitive to think there is serious bargain shopping in NYC. The volume is so high, if you pay attention, and regularly shop the fleas and thrift stores, you can build a fabulous collection--ask Eddie Ross. Moving along, the flower shops of New York are spectacular. The flower district and the florists, while expensive, are inspirational. There are several favorites in the East 50's.

ZeZe Flowers rules, as the #1 florist in New York. The space, flowers, exotic plants and accessories are an uber stylish mix of old and new. My father would say: "Train your eye, dear." I certainly do.

Don't go to buy, unless you have an unlimited budget. Go for inspiration, but definitely eat at Ze Cafe around the corner, on East 52nd. The food is sublime, the intimate carriage house space lovely, and we were charmed by the still demure, Gloria Vanderbilt, lunching in a straw hat, elegant white sheath, with bright red sandals to match her signature red lips. Anderson Cooper inherited her inscrutable eyes.

Manhattan’s century-old flower district occupies little more than a block of West 28th Street, between Avenue of the Americas and Seventh Avenue, and is shrinking like a puddle in the sun. Delightfully lush, it is a verdant riot of color and fragrance. Go early, or pay retail and bring your business card.

Threading throughout the city, numerous parks punctuate the architecture. Madison Square Park is a current favorite, due to the astonishing Jaume Plensa sculpture. Seriously, babies in strollers look up, wave their arms, wiggle and coo at the astonishing Echo . It is Located between Fifth and Madison Avenues, at 23rd and 26th street, in the Flat Iron district.

Echo is a heart stopper, and a crowd experience, as people helplessly gravitate in her direction. Monumental at 40' high, the sculpture fools your eye. While she looks like a flat, photographic image--she is not. Beautiful Echo is so grand, she invites conversation among strangers, while she dwells within herself. This is the most gorgeous sculpture I've ever seen and is right outside Eataly, the largest artisanal Italian food and wine marketplace in the world. This fantastic gourmet emporium is the collaboration and dream of visionary foodies: Oscar Farinetti, Mario Batali, Lidia Bastianich, and her son Joe. Oh dear God!! If you don't go, don't tell me.

Formerly the old Toy building, 50,000 square feet of repurposed space devoted to food, conquers any craving you could conjure. They will even wash and chop your vegetables for you. If you've seen most New York kitchens, it makes perfect sense. To feed our souls, we hit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. If I lived in New York I would go every week and be a brilliant (and thin) connoisseur. There is no such thing as having "done" the Met. There are always more, new ways of seeing art. On the way over, I can never resist a stop at Bardith.

When the girls finally pull this Taurus out of the china shop, we agree to visit the historic rooms--again. The lines for Alexander McQueen were prohibitive. If you want to go, go early, or join the Met to skip the line.

My third daughter is a francophile, so we wandered through the elegant Wrightsman rooms. We were transported to one of the rare, great eras when the confluence of money, style and craftsmanship flowed seamlessly through the enfilade of daily ritual. The cavernous public spaces in New York provide first class people watching and the ultimate theatre, as far as I'm concerned.

Take a spin through the romantic Rooms with a View exhibit. Then, if the weekend looms, and you need to get out of town, our favorite day trip, is a visit to the antique stalls in Stamford. We took the express train out of Grand Central, and walked up to Hiden galleries.

There is plenty of good mid-century loot for those longing for their inner "Mad-Man" swanky modern schemes.

This is a great spot to knock out furnishings for a new country or beach house--negotiate!

Eclectic urbanistas can quickly layer a room, evoking generations of diverse phases. Hamptons House and Gardens has a great collection of vintage Jansen. For dinner, grab a cab to Greenwich and watch the Real Housewives of Fairfield County take drinks on the water at the charming Hotel L'Escale. After bargain hunting, its fun to view your bizarro opposite.

This eye rolling, swoon worthy meal is so good, you don't mind making a scene. Order different dishes and share. The heirloom tomato salad will bring tears to your eyes. All the pastas dissolve in light puffs, with tasty sauces that will levitate you out of your seat. The skirt steak is the best thing I've ever put in my mouth. The four of us split one order. The restaurant is small and loud. If you are deaf, eat and talk later. Plan your flight around this reservation. Dinner for four is under $300.00, if you go easy on the wine.

We had a delicious lunch at Morandi, but the most exciting thing was the company. We joined John Berendt and Sean Strub. John signed a copy of his new children's book, which my neighbor loves.

We celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day, but what about the other parents we have had in our lives?
This week, our family fondly reminisced about the one and only, Margie McCalla, our cook and family member.

We were so blessed to have her in our lives; we cannot believe the luck and grace of 36 years with her. In our house, Margie was Sacred. What she said--went, even to my Mother. She ruled us so completely because we knew she loved us. She was not our Nanny; she was the head of the house. She was the keeper of our secrets, shared humor and sass, solved every murder in The Post, and stood up for all of us. My happiest memories in life go back to my years and years in the kitchen with her. Margie wrapped me in an apron and stood me on a chair. There we would discuss life, food, Santa Claus, spring flowers…you name it. She absolutely taught me the art of witty banter. With a wooden spoon raised in the air, she would tell me, "That is not funny," or, "I've heard that joke before," or she would double over and laugh.

Margie had opinions, and we believed in them. I still believe in them. The kitchen was her laboratory and pulpit, where a vast array of ingredients was transformed into swooning courses—served piping hot, beneath a Southern spiced, running commentary. Soap Operas were analyzed, baseball players were discussed, assassins were vehemently, chopped, diced, and skewered, as Margie ran her race to the 6:30 serving. I felt grown up. The joy of life centered there, and we paused over a sprouted seed in an avocado, lemon or lime, and stopped everything to reverently plant and preserve the tiny promise of life.

With all the ritual and pattern of serving, often 36 meals in a day, our kitchen garden produced trees that we transferred to larger and larger pots in our sunny dining room. I was a very important servant to our brilliant cook. I scuttled around to fetch dirt, pots, water, stir, measure, learning teaspoons and tablespoons, cups and pints. Margie unraveled letters and numbers by teaching me how to read the side of a stick of butter and add up her amounts, explaining proportions and ratios. She slowed her bubbling, broiling and sautéing dance to break it down for this little chatterbox, who was hiding from five brothers and a bossy older sister, seeking refuge from the endless correction of the nuns.

She was magic, turning seeds into trees, egg whites into solid peaks, whipping cream, explaining how 20 seconds too long, would create butter. I felt like Arthur in the cave with Merlin. To extend the analogy, Margie, thanks to the miracle of Noxema, never aged. Her 1940’s hairstyle was an unchanging sculpture of black sheen, tucked demurely into a hairnet.

Sleepy at night, in front of T.V., watching Ironsides or Mission Impossible, I would take her face in my hands and laugh at her freckles, complimenting the smoothness of her skin. Then I would nestle into the softness of her upholstered side, and inhale the deep rich eucalyptus, camphory smell of her—part dentist office, mixed with band-aid box.

Unlike everyone else shoving and pushing me through life, Margie coaxed me through domestic bliss. As I grew older, and was absent for day camp or ski-trips, I would resume my place in the kitchen, and regale her with stories of the mean girls and the cute boys. Inevitably, there was a baby boy in a high chair singing a song, lapping up food, banging his spoon, babbling to us about Santa Claus, Wild Kingdom, army men, and all their boyish thoughts. Our eyes would meet, and we would dramatically roll them.

Then we would play with the baby and laugh, thicken and thin our gravy, and get dinner out for the hoardes. Every single member of my family felt as special to her as I did. All of my friends rushed to the kitchen when they came to our house to greet her. My parents’ friends loved her. Margie’s kitchen was True North in our house, where all visitors stopped for benediction.

Our dear Margie passed on June 7^th at the age of 101, in the arms of her devoted family. If I ever felt lost in this life, I should be ashamed, because God sent an angel to watch over us.

I will always love Margie, and be thankful everyday for her love, humor, and camaraderie. I am not allowed to grieve for her, it is just wrong, after her great run through life. We can only be profoundly grateful for the grace and cohesion she provided for the great rabble she always led to the table.

I cannot duplicate her fried chicken, veal or eggplant, but I come close to her, when I pull my friends and children into my kitchen, and make them chop, and stir and chat.

It is not a proper party--it is better. It is Margie’s kitchen that I compulsively recreate—a place where we can have disasters, laugh, eat delicious meals, but best of all, find our true selves.

The Paris flea markets have been one of the main shopping destinations for bargain hunters and collectors of fine French antiques alike for years. The markets began when the “rag and bone” men over two centuries ago brought valuables they had found in the garbage each night to sell each day at the same venue. One in Saint-Ouen / Porte de Clignancourt - the most famous of the markets and the largest, fondly know as “Les Puces” (The fleas), has everything you can ever imagine. If you thought finding a fine vintage French chandelier or a Louis XII style bed was out of the question, you’ll find out quickly all shopping dreams come true at Les Puces. Many interior designers shop the flea markets for clients and interior design ideas such as New York interior designers and Los Angeles interior designers.

ParisPerfect.com describes the markets of the Puces, “Along Rue des Rosiers, there are several interesting shops, selling Art Deco furniture, fireplaces, mirrors and 'interesting decorative furniture'. I've bought mirrors and some furniture at the second mirror dealer on the right, Philippe and find his prices reasonable. His sister in law owns the first mirror stand on the right and they too have a nice selection. Much further down on the left, before Serpette, is a shop that sells interesting decorative pieces, paintings, garden pieces etc. Good taste and worth a stop.”

My container Garden Revisited

It is that time of year again and we are planting the containers for my front courtyard. Last year, I posted a step-by-step procedure, however, it was early on in my blogging career, so I'm guessing most of you have not read it. I really loved the plant combinations, so we are repeating them this year. Here is the end result from last Summer. The Leagrave bench is one of my favorite garden items on our website. I combined Plumbago "Auriculata", Cleome "Royal Queen" mix, with a trailing Verbena "Lanai Peach." I also experimented with some orange Portulaca as a more drought resistant alternative to the Verbena. It turns out, that the Portulaca fared better with the Mediterranean plumbago. Cleome can really take abuse, and I love how it towers and gets a little wild and wooly.

I am in the process of building up my container garden. My dream was to create a terra cotta hedge of lavender, but my plants needed some maturity. They thrive in the full sun and reflected heat of the courtyard. This fall, I transplanted them to a nursery bed, to survive the bitter weather we've experienced lately. Here they are, in moderate transfer shock, ready to complete my vision.

Gardens are all about anticipation. It is hard to buy lavender this size, and in N.C. zone 7, they will not make it through the winter in pots. In year two, I'm on my way to a fragrant and soft accent to my annuals. Cleome, that tall wooly plant in the previous pictures, reproduces like a good Catholic and reseeded themselves in all the pots, not to mention the cracks in the bricks. Container gardens can actually be somewhat perennial. However, all flower arrangements, landscape, or container gardens require the same design elements of a home, or music. There must be a refrain, a chorus and a little mischief in between. I add some tropical elements and succulents to pull it off. Here is my chorus:

My favorite color combinations are blues, purples, corals, pinks and white. The plants are selected for their compatibility with sun and water requirements. I shop at a favored Greenhouse and attend farmers markets. Note my window box. I buy Hydrangeas at the grocery store for almost nothing and enjoy them in the house. I re-plant them everywhere. I never met a hydrangea I didn't love and I collect all varieties.

These hydrangeas cost about $19.00 and are about 4 years old. I let them turn any color they want to. The pots at the breezeway are in their full glory. I began by planting the tallest plant (Cleome) in the center of the pots.

My Plumbago comes in hanging baskets and I carefully separate them for the containers.

I then plant 3 in a triangular pattern, leaving space around the edges for the verbena or portulaca to cascade over.

The Verbena is pretty, but the Portulaca proved to be a better choice for the full heat and sun in my courtyard.

It can rain and blow with ferocity in the South, as you have heard on the news lately. Until the flowers take root in the light soil, I shelter them in the breezeway and water them very gently, so as not to created gullies and expose the roots.

It really helps to take photographs of the process and the end results, as a reminder for the following season. I really liked the softness of the Perestroika Sage, combined with the spiky Cleome. It can really take the full sun and heat of the courtyard as well, so I plan to add more this year. I added some Star Gazer lilies to the window box last Summer and hid the pots behind the lush hydrangeas. I've added them to my shopping list, as they were a gorgeous and unexpected fragrant addition.

For the sake of conservation, I planted the lilies in the winter nursery beds and two made it. I added them to the center of the containers this year, for a little variety. I cannot resist including some bouquets from my hydrangeas and a few gardens from Summers past.

This was a wedding bouquet for my friend's 80 year old Mother's hasty trip to City Hall. Her fiance would not wait!! I am mixing (something blue) Hydrangeas with some really pretty, dribbly Lace Caps. I had to add some Katherine Hepburn Calla Lilies, and a touch of peach stock for counterpoint. I can report that the bride and groom are blissfully happy.

In case you haven't seen my ultimate garden. I planned, personally planted, watered and weeded this "Bit of Earth." Sadly, the deer found it. The least obtrusive, electrified deer fence was erected. They still leaped in, and the fence is not beautiful. Because of the steep hillside, in the glory days, it was visible from all the front windows of the house and gave us a great deal of happiness. On a last, sensible note, I will show you a great way to keep your garden tools handy and available.

I buy river rocks and pebbles that are cleaned, and spray them with a bit of WD-40. I shove my tools back in the basket, after a good rinse from the hose, and a wipe from a rag. They are lubricated and handy for their next chore. If you have any photos of your container gardens, flower beds or gardening tips, please send them on. Miami Design District By Viive Ralston

For those of you who have always wondered what you drive by on your way from MIA to sparkling South Beach, let me introduce you to (drumroll please) The Miami Design District! What was once a quiet, empty, almost desolate part of Miami, is now a vibrant, bustling destination complete with gorgeous furniture showrooms and boutiques, delicious restaurants, and hot high end shopping.

As you drive west from the airport, ask your taxi driver to take you to the corner of NE 39^th St and NE 2^nd Ave – the red arrow points that that intersection on the map. You will be right in the thick of things and ready to take a tour of the area. On the map above, everything in orange is retail space, and everything is blue is future retail space – read: this place is growing by the minute!!

A great place to start is Holly Hunt at 3833 NE 2^nd Avenue, (305) 571-2012. This is a beautiful showroom filled with sleek modern furniture and lighting.

Gorgeous low leather sofas, smooth wooden tables, and sculptural light fixtures blend together creating a stylish and comfortable environment just waiting to be personalized and accented.

In case the modern look is not the right fit, they also show a line called Gregorius Pineo manufactured out of California, which is based on more traditional scale and design. Luscious upholstery, carved wood, and eye catching iron detailing evoke a rustic country home, or a cozy mountain lodge.

Fly by the Jonathan Adler boutique, which is filled to the brim with colorful throw pillows, pottery, wall art, and unique table top items. I could have spent the better part of an hour cooing over it all, but I was on my way to…. Water Works!

I feel that a well designed bathroom is one of the most important features in a house or apartment, and yet, I never seem to feel any inspiration for creating one. After my first Waterworks visit, I am confident that this will no longer be a problem. The Miami Waterworks showroom is a place where one can shop for bathroom fixtures they way the French shop for cheese. It is a beautiful boutique filled with hundreds of varieties of sinks, bathtubs, fittings, hardware, lighting, towels, even bubble bath!

A couple of doors down, I stepped into Adrianna Hoyos’ showroom. Hoyos is an internationally known designer from Ecuador, known best for her specialty – designing and decorating high end hotels and resorts. I was dying to see her furniture creations, because I love her style of mixing clean lines with forms inspired by nature, all crafted using exotic Latin American materials.

Her flagship Miami store was showing her latest Africa collection, which is a gorgeous collection of rich dark woods, giraffe motifs, and fresh white fabrics.

Next I popped into Ligne Roset to browse through their amazing sample sale. I like to look in on this company every season, because I am always amazed by their fresh creative style. They use unique materials, and apply them in never before seen ways. Could I decorate an entire room using their furniture, rugs, and lighting – no. But I like to pick one piece to mix in with some more classic styles – usually accent pieces and accessories, although they also have amazing sectional sofas.

I saw some really eye catching poufs – which, might I add, was a prevalent theme at the spring High Point Market. Fun, casual, modern – they make perfect occasional seating, and they actually look quite sculptural. The square shape has more structure and form, and bright colored fabric is a must for cheering up a sad room.

Ligne Roset’s accessories are my favorite. On the left are tall, sculptural vases, in the center are some stylish mirrors and whimsical hourglass end tables, and on the right two sleek floor lamps, a very interesting little waste basket, and a fun red side chair. Just one or two pieces from their collection would provide that unexpected punch that your room needs to become Elle Décor worthy.

Next door, I stepped into a beautiful boutique, Monica James and; Co. I was completely drawn in by the colorful display in the window. Monica James is an interior designer by trade, and her boutique is a gorgeous mix of custom upholstery, antiques, and hand selected lighting and rugs. If you need visual inspiration, this is a great place to find it. They also offer a beautiful selection of fabric.

Across the street, I spotted ThreadCount – an amazing source for bed and bath linens and more. They obviously have lots of gorgeous sheets and towels, also beautiful Dransfield and Ross place settings. I must have sniffed every Lafco candle in the shop – they make one for each room: Breakfast Room, Kitchen, Guest Room, Sun Room, Foyer, Patio… I just love the concept of having a signature scent for each environment in your home.

They sell Savoir beds, and dress them to the nines, complete with a fun breakfast tray!

My last stop in Miami was Jalan Jalan Collection. Very unsuspecting from the outside, but inside is a treasure trove of furniture, lighting, decorative art, everything! It is a large store, but it is well organized into a series of smaller spaces and rooms that you can peruse at leisure. And you will want to take your time, lest you miss one precious morsel.

Jalan Jalan is extremely well inventoried. It is an eclectic collection, with lots of color and texture, and a diverse selection of styles. It felt like walking through a furniture market. One room featured African masks and driftwood lamps, the next Buddha statues and ships lanters, the next totem poles and rich leather chairs.

There is something for everyone, and even if you think you know what you like, you might find yourself gravitating towards something completely new – if only because they make it look so inspiring in their beautiful showroom!

At this point, I suggest you treat yourself to a mojito and some tapas at either Sra. Martinez or Mai Tardi, two amazing restaurants in the district. You can sit under an umbrella and listen to the buzz of the district, and rest your tired feet. Sra. Martinez is in an old Post Office Building across from the Design and Architecture High School. Mai Tardi is in a little garden off of NE 39^th Street.

The Design District has truly become a destination, and everyone interested in furniture and design should visit. There is so much to see and visit, you’ll want a couple of days. Every Saturday there is Launch Miami Market, which highlights the new product of up and coming artists, designers and entrepreneurs. On the second Saturday of each month, come into the Design District at night to experience Art + Design Night, where boutiques and galleries open their doors for extended evening hours, complete with music, food, and (of course) shopping! Explore the Design District’s website for more information on events, as well as designers and vendors in the area.

Lennox Hill Neighborhood House Designer Decorated Tables!

Its that time of year again! My daughter, Devon, who works for Lindsey Coral Harper sent us wonderful images of the gala tables.

Lindsey created a lush Indian themed feast for the deities with this sumptuous Kravet fabric.

Serious flower power comes from Sebastian Li. The place cards are from John Robshaw stationery.

Eddie Ross, always has the most glorious arrangements. Just when you think he's outdone himself, he wows us again.

The table is a collaboration with Carleton V. The table cloth is from his atelier. Jaithan just checked in with me, and wanted to convey credit for these charming match boxes:. "Those are handmade matchbooks from our friend, Susan Schneider, of Shandell's in Millerton at every place setting!"

If you are going near the D and D, pop in to see Eddie's windows for Carleton V. They've been a sensation! The additional Jaithan news flash is: "We're also including Lindsey's (Lindsey Coral Harper's) tables in our next window!"

Last but not least, we have Lucca and company, the only participant that brought their own gorgeous table. It is a custom Belgian blue stone table with solid steel handmade black base.

My daughter, Liza, works for Elizabeth Blitzer of Blitzer and Comany, specializing in Public Relations for the interior design world. I went out on a limb after the October market to announce the return of color. Trad Home shares this sentiment, so.... sometimes I get it! Dovecote Decor is representing Century now, so that luscious Oscar Pagoda bar can be had for something well under the stratospheric $12,540.00 price tag. All sorts of bars are rolling out now. They are the chic, must have, new accessory.

I will also add that lacquer is glowing everywhere, and is making a welcome return.

Amy Bleier Long and I are on the same page. I love these asian inspired lacquer Waingwright tables that we saw at market. We are loading them onto our website on Monday, so call if you want to reserve yours in the first container. Flipping through this tip loaded issue, I promptly bookmarked the Perspectives section. I love rule breakers in design, and 10 Things my Mother told me belongs in a special file. You know I am a huge fan of Suzanne Kasler, and I especially love her idea of creating a flexible arrangement in the front hall that can do double duty for dining--brilliant. I had a friend who designed her house with Sister Parish, and they created a center hall with hidden closets that held folding tables, table cloths and chairs. When the dining room was put away, the toys came out for the grandchildren and it became an elegant playroom. It was sheer genius.

Eddie and Jaithan are among the most generous and creative forces of nature in our industry. I share their china and flower container addiction. I really do long to see their prop room.

Celerie Kemble discusses her Mother's adage to never hang a mirror horizontally. I agree with both, but think this departure is perfect. I would like to know what everyone thinks about the lamps on either end of the sofa being uneven in height.

The girls really think I need the Peacock in the dining room. I've already gone completely over the top in there since I added Tony Duquette's orange sofa that I purchased feverishly at the One King's Lane sale. Here are some photos Liza sent me from this event.

Hickory Chair Wows High Point Again! April 2011

High Point is in full swing. Traffic has increased, and buyers are replenishing inventory. I was on day 4 of shopping when I started this post, a tired girl reporting to you at the end of the day. Let's just cut to the chase and go to Hickory Chair--the rare destination where we can tick off extinct traditions, thriving in its own unique American archipelago. This surviving niche product line is made in America (Hickory N.C.), by American craftsman, one unique and custom piece at a time. The driving force of their success, in my opinion, is that their line is driven by the top designers of our era, versus the finger to the wind interpretation of what consumers want. Suzanne Kasler styles the ultimate girl cave for us.

I could take over the world empowered by these "tools of the trade." The perfect work table is combined with muscular industrial shelving and lighting, and infused with energy. My synapses are positively crackling here. Suzanne is a sparkling raconteur, communicating her aesthetic of creating a neutral space with color accents. This light hearted Suzani fabric is exclusive to Hickory chair.

Below, study the left side horizon to the perfect office in chic, chick aesthetic. First we do the work, then we close the deal. I am now seeing myself on the cover of Forbes. Hickory Chair understands imagination, vision and talent.

After you have made the deal of the Century, you might retire with close family and friends (with a celebratory glass of Champagne) to your quiet and elegant living room.

I know that I am thin and wearing Armani! My imagination is running amok, and the generous Suzanne, communicating her aesthetic, carries none of the drama flashing through my brain. Suzanne explains how her super clean aesthetic succeeds through the use of mixed metaphor and oxymoron. Mid-century merges with a comfortable clubby upholstery, combined with a feminine arrangement of ceramics. It is a Yin/Yang assemblage balancing structure with dark finishes, light fabrics and dimensional wall treatment. Mentally, we need to balance, and so, the external reflects the internal. I don't like to hear the nonsensical comment: "It's just a house." Pirouetting, vibrant wall art pops, warming up the space. My imaginary friends are very happy. Should I tell them you can have this room within two or three weeks? Call me if you want it.

Moving on to the fun and gregarious Alexa Hampton, president of her father's Mark Hampton atelier, tells a different story. Alexa is all legacy, with a twist and fresh take on both traditional and mid-century. Her look makes me feel like I am an only child, inheriting layered years of households. Forgive the photograph. Alexa has the best dining table ever, ever, ever. I have been shopping for 30 years. It is The Bomb.

Inspired by Alexa's own antique Irish Regency drop leaf table, the Christiansen can be ordered to seat as many as 20 people, at nearly 216" in length. This table has 5 leaves so it has "features and options." You can order special cloth bags for storage, which I recommend. My Uncle inherited my grandparents'

"State dinner table," which is what I called it. I have the happiest memories of Thanksgiving and Christmas family dinners, with most of us at the big table. My Aunt would bring out the leaves and move it to the long Lanai. She set it so beautifully it took my breath away. We would eat and talk for hours. It is not just a house, it is your home--the staging for your life and memories. The dinner table is the family center, and this is the best. The price is entirely reasonable for the quality and options. I am using it with these Mariette Himes Gomez Hickory Chairs, with a custom paint finish.

I became a little tongue tied with Thomas O'Brien , it is all me. I asked him really stupid questions, and he doesn't suffer fools like me. Anyway, silly me aside, Thomas has the best book shelves on the planet.

Give me a Stendal break, these studly bookcases are shown in a luminous velvet, and can be done in linen, wood, paint and so on and so on. I would think they will be part of the line for eternity, but you never know. They are entirely collectible. Thomas O'Brien does ground breaking work. If you want to collect modern American furniture, this line is for you.

Are you seeing the distorted Georgian chair, in front of the knock out saddle leather bed? This chair is a completely original and defining concept. Collectors succeed wildly, when they purchase the first wave of an aesthetic. I would say, this chair is most collectible piece I've ever seen at market. I have had the experience of a website making the furniture look better than it really is. Hickory Chair is the opposite.

I'm not losing my mind over this image on the website. I've seen enough "High Virginia" style to last me a lifetime. I snapped this picture in the showroom this week.

How much prettier is this James River Breakfront done in a gray/white paint finish? It is really fun to play with the online design studio. We have all been talking about creating versatile dining areas. Especially in apartments where space is tight. The showroom has some stylish examples of library or living room dining solutions.

Raising this sectional to dining height creates a much tighter space that multitasks as dining, workspace, reading or just relaxing.

Love the classic Georgian table with the very cool zeb sofa and sleek leather printed modern chairs. Its all in the mix. I have gone on and on, but Hickory Chair is without a doubt the gold standard of furniture manufacturers in America. The showroom illustrates the best design in the country. On a corporate level, it is a very open and friendly place. The president, Jay Reardon even sat down and ate lunch with little me!!

High Point Furniture Market April 2011 Sneak Preview

High Point starts today, but we know it really started two days ago. I shopped this afternoon and grabbed a few bargains for our design clients with wish lists. I am a sleepy girl at the end of the day, so I'll send you a quicky sneak preview. Economy be damned! Creative people are still having a ball. At the last market, vintage top hats pervaded. Now, we have the coolest bowler hat light pendants--delightful.

While I was perusing the fabulous outdoor furniture, I noticed Timothy Oulton having a cigarette. Nobody apologizes for smokes in North Carolina, so naturally, I corrected him. I have been a fan of Timothy, and he was the man behind the curtain for a time. He has lived in China for the past 20 years supervising every aspect of the production. After scouring the world's flea markets and sending his treasures back to China, Timothy makes sure their reproductions are indistinguishable from the original.

I have shopped High Point for 26 years. I have watched this company emerge from a minuscule High Point space, with a few good reproductions, transition into Rock Star design work.

Chic lofty looks pervade the showroom, but it retains a whimsical eclectic style.

This sleek bar is the perfect addition to the transient household. For the lady in the house, the traveling vanity is the perfect vehicle for a quick get away.

Navigating High Point Furniture Market April 2011

High Point is logistically difficult to navigate. Having shopped "The Market" for at least 20 days per year, for the past 25 years, I know my way around, and oddly find the experience energizing. The main hurdle is lodgings, and I would recommend two locations. The Proximity hotel is the new chic LEED green hotel in Greensboro, and is close to the airport. The food is excellent and the commute to High Point is about 25 minutes. You will find the high end design crowd at the bar.

My second choice would be to stay at the Graylyn Estate in Winston-Salem. It is the former property of R.J. Reynolds executive, Bowman Gray and is now operated by Wake Forest University. I walk the grounds often, and it is far from the madding crowd, but really the same distance as Proximity, though a few more minutes from the airport. Prices are extremely reasonable, and dining in Winston Salem is much more accessible during market. You will miss the night scene, but in my opinion, you do not want to stay in High Point during market, you will want to retreat. If you stay at Graylyn, you will want to eat at 1703, 2 minutes down the road. The menu is inspired, and the food, mercifully, after a long day at market, is served at your pace--quickly, or leisurely.

Now, down to the brass tacks of High Point. The heart of HP is the IHFC (International Home Furnishings Center). Go there first, (shown below in red). I've drawn orange lines around the perimeter of your hunting grounds. The Hamilton Wrenn district and Market Square are areas you should explore. Receiving a Resource Guide in advance is key. Ask the market authority to send you a copy. It is easier for me than the website, which is surprising. For parking, I'm one to pay the piper. I have good luck on Wrenn, between Green (rear of IHFC) and Russell. Many hotels have shuttle service to the transportation terminal at the IHFC.

If you are not snagging "one of a kinds," your first stop is InterHall in the IHFC. Walk through the main street entrance (Commerce) and walk down the hall to the right. InterHall is the must see, juried space at market. This is where the market authority separates the "Wheat from the chafe." Thank goodness!

If you have regular access to large design centers, many of these vendors are unique to HP, so take the time. As you walk up and down the aisles, you will see an escalator. When you finish shopping InterHall, return to the central escalator and window shop floors 2-4 of the adjacent Design and Green sections. Chelsea textiles has spectacular Gustavian and mid-century pieces.

As far as I'm concerned, in the IHFC, InterHall and floors of 2-4 of "Design" and "Green" are all you need to discover. If other vendors are on your list for that building, ask a guide. Your next stop is the highly worthy, outdoor furniture location. Go back down the escalators to InterHall and retrace your steps towards the Inter Hall food court. There is a sneaky exit behind the dining tables that will put you on the crosswalk to the outdoor furniture vendors. Walk through most of those showrooms, on that floor, there are some gems.

Commerce Street runs in front of the IHFC, when you finish shopping the annex, orient yourself to Commerce and go left towards the C and D building. The C and D has some of my favorite vendors. We posted our coveted Carson and Co decoupage lamps, and furniture last July. Susan's card table is another heart stopping, hand touched product. These artisanal vendors are the heirloom tomatoes and regional goat cheeses found at farmers markets. You will not find them in the urban design buildings or most regional markets. They show in North Carolina. High Point is Captain Crunch on a shelf next to white truffle oil, next to beef jerky, adjacent to organic free range chicken eggs, picked this morning!

This is a breathtaking 17th and 18th century print, decoupage treatment for a card table that can be customized completely. Susan's showroom is #41 in the C and D building. Market square has a new juried equivalent of InterHall, called Salon. It is slowly improving.

Start on the ground floor and power walk the suites. I have trained myself to pass the junk quickly, and not sift for nuggets in every stall. Don't forget to see the Wind Rose when you've reached the second floor. Here is their location: Space 246-250 Historic Market Square, Telephone: 336.327.5306. Market is disorienting, but there are guides everywhere.

When you've done the suites, go back to market square and use the escalator and run some laps around those floors.

Libeco of Belgium shows their traditional flax linens in the salon space: stall G-7034. Fellow blogger Greet from Belgian Pearls introduced this wonderful line to us recently. Don't forget to ask the guides to put you on the correct elevator to take you to Century Furniture. You don't want to miss this little darling in the Oscar De La Renta line.

When you've finished, go out the front of the Suites and catch a van to the Hamilton district. I get off the van at Broad and Hamilton. This district has many excellent vendors, I will feature some of the must sees.

Pay attention to the Wright Table company and the amazing custom work they craft in North Carolina. Don does a mixture of traditional, contemporary and European designs and is a master of teasing depth out of beautiful woods. The scale and design of his furniture is the perfect imperfection we are looking for in a custom reproduction. He made my breakfast table and it is beautifully indestructible.

This industrial era inspired coffee table literally levitates to table height, reverses with equal grace and has a lock for child proofing. The surface and finish can be customized. 330 N. Ian has beautifully hand made English and European reproductions, crafted within the renown English cabinet making tradition.

We will move on to New River Artisans.

In the same district, New River Artisans, is an oxymoronic, crazy good taste, custom designed, hand made carpet resource from the middle of Appalachia. Seriously, the New River is ancient, and flows, unlike any river in North America from south to north. New River Artisans reflect the anomaly of their name--East Jesus meets Madison Avenue--who knew. If you think you've ever been in the boonies, drive 100 miles more miles, or come see them at High Point. Their showroom is: 200 N. Hamilton ST. N. Court, suite #301. In that neighborhood, Mottahedeh has an "over run" cash and carry show room I hit each market.

Over the years, I have accumulated wonderful vases, far below wholesale. In the Hamilton district up higher towards the Wrenn side, you'll find Y.H. Antiques, together with Somerset Bay and Modern History.

Don't even think about missing Hickory Chair where you can run into the likes of Alexa Hampton, Thomas O'Brien, and Suzanne Kasler. If you are coming to market let me know. I'd love to see you!

Our wonderful lodgings at Hacienda Cuisin, purchased from the King of Spain a year before Cervantes wrote Don Quixote, originally encompassed over 100,000 acres, north of Quito in the lush Andean highlands. At 8,500 feet with the predictable equatorial sun, and rich volcanic soils, the owner, Nicholas Millhouse has resurrected this old world eden. It is a perfect refuge or staging area to explore the dramatic countryside.

The beauty of colonial architecture lies within the flow of interior and exterior space. Courtyards and gardens alternate between verdant sanctuaries and cozy firesides.

Nicholas Millhouse has created a delightfully eclectic mix of English comfort, Andean crafts and ecclesiastical arts. The famed Ecuadorean roses are splashed around every single room, as if they were daisies.

Orchids and bromeliads bloom profusely in the branches of over 1000 varieties of trees on the estate. The garden is a horizontal and vertical experience.

Dinner was actually growing in the morning from the Hacienda gardens. I love soup, an unworthy name for my favorite detectible course. The fresh vegetable soups in Ecuador generate swoons. I need to mention the juice. We have never heard the names, or tasted these fruits at our designer grocery stores. I thought every exotic fruit on the planet was within reach---so not true. The fresh fruit juice is so delicious I could become diabetic.

Over 60 species of flowers from all over the world are cultivated in the gardens.

Our host is an avid collector of textiles from all over the world. If you are a fan (Jane Schott, you know I mean you) you are in for a treat.

You can write your first novel here, or visit the famed Otavalo craft market, a largely indigenous town in the Imbabura Province of Ecuador. The town, which is in a valley, is surrounded by the peaks of Imbabura 4,630m, Cotacachi 4,995m, and Mojanda volcanoes.

The people of Otavalo are famous for their sweetness, although I will say, you pass houses with bars on the windows, with walls and gates. We were firmly instructed to hold on to our wallets, but for once in my life, I had no trouble.

I wanted to give you a bird's eye view of the this dramatic volcanic valley.

Every inch of arable space is feverishly cultivated by the indigenous population. When I tell you these hillsides are steep, I am not kidding. We walked along the brittle edge of the caldera on the right hand side. I had to sit down and make contact with the earth to orient myself.

You can hike around the massive lake, in the eco preserve, formed by an epic volcanic explosion over 3,000 years ago. I know most of you will forgive me if we took the short hike (we were at an altitude of 10,200 feet here), and went shopping in the famous Cotacachi, the center of Ecuador's leather industry, which is known for its polished calf skins. The whole town is bags, shoes, coats etc.. The prices are terrific.

I collided with the fiesta! How adorable are these girls? I missed photographing the attentive nuns coaxing them through their performance.

Miguel and his daughter Luz Maria stand in front of the beautiful woven textile I purchased. I am humbled by the painstaking dedication to the process of their traditional art. It takes two months to wash, card, spin, dye and weave this remnant of the past. Our small group was touched by their kindness and patience, describing this dying art.

More lost arts can be found in the workshops of San Antonio de Ibarra.

The upscale Galeria Latina, in Quito, has an astonishing array of the Andean crafts. I lust for a collection of these bad boys!
