س: طيب ليه متقولهمش يروحوا التحرير؟
ج: عشان التحرير فشل يجيب حق اللي مات بدل المرة عشرة.

س: طيب متقولوهم ... ؟
ج: أقولهم ايه بس، حد فيكم عنده حل بجد؟ أروح أضحك عليهم ولا أقولهم كلام شعارات؟.

س: أصل مش عايزين دم؟
ج: القاتل مش مستنيك تروحله عند وزارته، بيخطفنا من الشوارع ويقتلنا في ماتش كورة، تفرق في ايه بقى!.

س: طيب هما عايزين ايه يعني؟
ج: عايزين عيش وحرية وعدالة اجتماعية كرامة إنسانية، عايزين حق الشهيد، عايزين يفهموا ليه عواجيز بتخطط لمستقبل وأطفال بتكتب وصيتها.

س: ايوه بس عايزين ايه دلوقتي حالا؟
ج: ولا أعرف، دي مش مظاهرة رافعة مطالب، بس هما بيهتفوا ضد المشير تعرف تجيبلهم المشير؟.

س: سيبنا التحرير ليه؟ التحرير واسع!
ج: لا التحرير بقى ضيق قوي، كله مشاكل وخناقات ومخترق من التحريات وفيه ناس بتركب على المنصات و تزعق وناس بتعمل حفلات تعذيب وناس بتفرض ارضية على البياعين وناس تانية بتضرب البياعين وإخوان بتشارك بمطالب عكس مطالب، انتم ازاي مش شايفين ده كله؟.

س: طيب معلش والنبي مشيهم كفاية دم!
ج: و الله العظيم ما أعرف أمشيهم، محدش يعرف يمشيهم.

س: طيب لما أنت مش عارف موجودين ليه، و مش عارف عايزين ايه، وملكش كلمة عليهم واقف معاهم ليه؟
ج: عشان اتعلمت في الثورة أقف مع دائما مع اللي بيتحدى الرصاص، مع اللي بيرفض السلطة، مع اللي يبدوا ضعيف وهو قوي، اتعلمت أن اللي بيوجع أكثر مش جرح الرصاص لكن جرح الغدر والبيع من على المنصات والفضائيات، اتعلمت أني لو مش المكان اللي ممكن أتصاب أو اتقتل أو اعتقل فيه وفيه غيره بيتصاب أو بيتقل أو بيعتقل يبقى بعمل حاجة غلط. لو مش فاهم ده مش هعرف أفهمك.

س: طيب أنا أعمل ايه دلوقتي؟
ج: متشتمش اللي قدام الرصاص حتى لو أنت مش فاهمه، بلاش تنظير ما تقولش بلطجية ولا مندسين، متتكلمش كأنهم خراف في حد بيسوقهم، الشباب دي مش فاضلها الا الإرادة، اتاخد منه العمر والحلم والأخ و لصديق والعين والرجل والروح ونادي الكورة والميدان والثورة وكل حاجة وأي حاجة، مش فاضله الا الإرادة، أنه هو اللي بيقرر يعمل ايه ومحدش متحكم فيه، وقمة الإرادة هي أنك تختار هتموت ازاي وتعيش ازاي.

س: اه بس أنا عايز أعمل حاجة ايجابية؟
ج:انزل اقف معاهم، مش لازم تشارك في الاشتباك بس انزل شم من نفس الغاز اللي بيشموه وافهم يعني ايه رش وخرطوش، انزل اتطوع في مستشفى ميداني أو وزع عليهم خل أو أكل.

س: مش عاجبني المواجهة مش عايز أنزل هناك؟
ج: خلاص انزل اتظاهر قدام وزارة الدفاع، أو في ميدان التحرير، أو شارك في مسيرات تسليم السلطة، أو انزل قدام ماسبيرو، أو اعمل عرض كاذبون، أو شارك في حملة حاكموهم، أو اشتغل على المحاكمات العسكرية، أو انزل سلاسل الثورة، أو انضم للجان الشعبية. المهم اعمل حاجة.

س: و لحد امتى هيفضل الحال ده؟
ج: لحد ما يسقط النظام

Blogger Removes Military Violations Pictures Post موقع بلوجر يزيل تدوينة لصور انتهاكات الجيش

• 17 December 2011: military forces did a raid on Tahrir Square and violently attacked protesters and committed human rights violations.

• 19 December 2011: i published a blog post titled “Military Forces Attack on Female Protesters” and idea of the post is to show how the military forces practice violence towards protesters and other citizens based on gender and class. The blog post had 5 pictures showing 5 different incidents where military forces beat, attack, assault, strip-off female protesters. (the 5 images where from: Reuters, AP, AFP, StockPix and DailyMail)

• 21 December 2011: i received a “Blogger Blog takedown notification” via an email from support@blogger.com to me and in the cc blogger-dmca-notification@google.com informing me that Blogger took the blog-post down by reverting it to a draft due to “copyright infringement” based on Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Here is the email:

• 22, 27 December 2011 and 10 January 2012: i sent them 3 emails asking for more information on the DMCA notice filed against. In their email they said according to DMCA the notice should be available on Chilling Effects with all necessary information, and I never found it and they never replied to any of my emails:

• 14 January 2012: i sent them the 4th email and last one informing them if the DMCA notice wasn’t made public and if they didn’t respond to me i am going to republish the post again. As the notice they claim to be filled against me was never made available to me or on the Chilling Effects website as it should be, and consequentially the DMCA notice became doubtful.

• 22 January 2012: since i got notice until today i kept searching for the notice and never found it. The last search i did was today 22 January 2012, 1pm (Cairo)

• 22 January 2012: i republished the blog post: Military Forces Attack on Female Protesters.

I would like to remind you that a similar situation happenesd between Flickr.com and Egyptian blogger and activist Hossam el-Hamalawy in March 2011, when Flickr administrators took down set of State Security Police officers because of “copyright infringement”. In November 2007, YouTube removed torture videos uploaded by blogger Wael Abbas and disabled his account.

منذ تولي المجلس الأعلى للقوات المسلحة شئون البلاد وثقنا وتعرضنا إلي العديد من الانتهاكات علي يد قوات الشرطة العسكرية (وفي بعد الأحيان بالتعاون مع قوات الشرطة المدنية) منها:

- فض تجمعات سلمية بالقوة والاعتداء على المتظاهرين وتعذيب المعتقلين.
- انتهاك ضباط وأطباء من الجيش المصري لحرمة النفس والجسد لمن جري احتجازهم بتوقيع الكشف الطبي الإجباري علي عذرية الفتيات.
- قتل المواطنين خارج إطار القانون.
- إحالة المدنيين للمحاكم العسكرية.

إلي جانب قيام القائمين على إدارة شئون البلاد بتبني نفس الأساليب والأدوات القمعية التي انتهجها نظام الرئيس المخلوع حسني مبارك لتكبيل الحريات، مثل:

- التشهير بمؤسسات المجتمع المدني ومنظمات حقوق الإنسان، وترهيبهم.
- تجريم حق الوقفات الاحتجاجية والاضرابات.

Activist and blogger Alaa Abd El Fattah has been detained on 30 October for 15 days, after refusing to be interrogated by the Military Prosecutor, in protest against its legitimacy.

أصدرت النيابة العسكرية يوم ٣٠ أكتوبر قرار بحبس الناشط والمدون علاء عبد الفتاح 15 يوما بعد التحقيق معه كمتهم في أحداث ماسبيرو. علاء عبد الفتاح مارس حقه في عدم الخضوع للتحقيق أمام النيابة العسكرية أولا لكونه مدنيا لا يجوز التعامل معه من خلال مؤسسة عسكرية وثانيا لأن تولي القضاء العسكري التحقيق في مجزرة ماسبيرو.

Torture in Egypt Still Going On

This new video was published online recently showing police and military officers beating and torturing detainees.

The struggle against the regime is expanding to include military police and trials and laws imposed on civilians.

Torture and police violence before #Jan25 was one of the main things people were suffering from and unfortunately the same practices and behavior are still going on because nothing actually changed in the police and security system.

Personally, i feel that before #Jan25 we were suffering from police violence, torture, emergency trials and many other human rights violation. Now, the exact same violations and problems are coming from the military side too.

Seems that Egyptians will need to set the stations on fire again like what happened on 28 January.

Harmful Idea: Freedom of Expression Online

Many key players within the international community started to focus on freedom of expression online and after the series of political changes taking place in North Africa and Middle East more and more communities are now focusing -only- on freedom of expression online and other related topics.

Those communities include members of the European Union, U.S. Administration, donors, non-governmental organizations.

Focusing on freedom of expression online and having debates with governments around the world on this topics and funding activities to support freedom of expression online will, on the long term, have negative impact on digital and online communities:

1. This kind of debates will inspire governments and make officials to think of creating new laws and regulations for the online space, content and media. Personally, i think once governments starts to regulate any right they actually limit practicing that right and those laws will be used against netizens in the future. We already have many cases from different countries where netizens faced legal troubles due to their activity online, imagine what will happen when governments come up with new law for the internet.

2. When donors include freedom of expression online as an important and necessary item this will push NGOs to do any activity to get that fund and those NGOs won't actually do something useful. This kind of fund will have really negative impact (we can already see the beginnings of this impact).

3. When this debate grow locally, this will open discussions to regulate all kind of media. So governments -and of course some communities- will want to reform the press law, think of new law to regulate online media, another law for theater and movies, another law for TV channels...etc

What to Do?

1. Support freedom of expression as a concept. Don't focus on particular medium, support any medium that can be used to exchange information and share opinions. Support freedom of expression in all offline and online mediums without paying special attention to the online.

2. Push for one-law for freedom of expression and access to information. (access to/publishing information)

3. Push to reform local telecommunications law and online companies policies (facebook.com, youtube.com, flickr.com...) . The relation between users, government and companies must change. Users rights must be the main concern and focus.

4. Fund projects to develop communication infrastructure.

يتناول تقرير "شهداء خلف القضبان" الصادر عن المبادرة المصرية للحقوق الشخصية أحداث قتل وتعذيب السجناء بعد اندلاع ثورة 25 يناير ويوثق التقرير عمليات القتل والانتهاكات التي تعرض لها نزلاء السجون على يد الضباط والحراس.

يعرض هذا التقرير شهادات تم جمعها من خمسة سجون تقع في أربع محافظات مصرية وهي: سجون "طره" والاستئناف في القاهرة، و"القطا" في الجيزة، و"شبين الكوم" في المنوفية، و"الأبعادية" في دمنهور.

وقامت المبادرة المصرية -إلي جانب التقرير- بعمل هذا الفيلم عن الأحداث التي جرت:

يوثق التقرير أحداث مأساوية مر بها نزلاء السجون نتيجة للمعاملة غير الإنسانية مثل التجويع والحرمان من الرعاية الصحية وتعرضهم لجرائم مثل القتل العشوائي والجماعي. كما يوثق معاناة أهالي السجناء من كذب وتضليل أجهزة الدولة والاعلام الرسمي، ورحلة بحثهم عن أبنائهم وذويهم في السجون والمشرحة. يمكن قراءة التقرير بالضغط هنا.

لماذا اعتصام؟

أعتقد أن التجمعات السلمية بجميع أشكالها (مظاهرات، اعتصامات، مسيرات...) هي أفضل طريقة للتعبير عن مطالب وفرضها على السلطة لتنفيذها، وأعتقد أن تلك الطرق القانونية والمشروعة هي الأنجح على الاطلاق لتحقيق أهداف محدده. تختلف خلفيات وأسباب الثوار الذين عادوا مرة آخرى لميادين مصر للاعتصام. فيما يلي بعض الدوافع التي تجعلني اشارك في الاعتصام واعتقد انها أسباب تدعو آخرين للانضمام:

1. ترهيب مصابي الثورة وأهاليهم على يد ضباط شرطة والضغط عليهم للتنازل عن البلاغات وتغيير مجريات المحاكمات. (لمزيد من المعلومات اضغط هنا)

2. استمرار جهاز الشرطة في تبني نفس سياسة ما قبل الثورة في التعامل مع المتظاهرين، والاستخدام المفرط في القوة، والإنكار الدائم للانتهاكات. ضرورة حل جهاز الأمن المركزي على المدى القريب وإعادة هيكل وزارة الداخلية على المدى المتوسط. (لمزيد من المعلومات اضغط هنا)

4. إلغاء قانون تجريم الإضراب والتظاهر الذي صدر يوم 23 مارس 2011. (لمزيد من المعلومات اضغط هنا)

6. التوقف فورا عن إحالة ومحاكمة المدنيين أمام محاكم عسكرية، وإعادة محاكمة المدنيين الذين تم محاكمتهم أمام قاضيهم الطبيعي لإتاحة فرص حقيقية للمحاكمة العادلة. التوقف عن اللجوء إلي المحاكمات الاستثنائية مثل محاكم أمن الدولة طوارئ والمحاكم العسكرية. (لمزيد من المعلومات اضغط هنا وهنا)

7. تفرغ المحاكم المختصة للنظر في قضايا قتل المتظاهرين بشكل علني، وأن تكون تلك المحاكم في حالة إنعقاد دائم.

8. محاكمة علنية وسريعة لمبارك وأركان نظامه عن الجرائم التي ارتكبوها في حق المصريين.

Jan25 Revolution and Content of Egyptian Cyberspace

Since 2004, Egyptian netizens and bloggers were able to highly utilize online platforms in different areas. Many taboos were broken through online spaces enabling offline media to address several topics that where considered “red-line”. These topics included torture in police stations, sexual harassment issues, religious minorities, violations committed by personages pro-Mubarak… etc.

During the revolution, the Egyptian cyberspace was extremely rich in terms of content provided which took different forms of text, videos and pictures. Two main things affected the content of the cyberspace, the first was what’s happened on the ground and the second was the accessibility to communications platforms.

The time from 14 January to 24 January 2011, netizens kept sending invitations to demonstrate on 25 January, which is the National Police Day in Egypt, against corruption, unemployment and torture. Netizens posted human rights reports and statements on human rights status, video-clips of different torture cases, pictures and footage from previous peaceful assemblies, motivations to join the demonstrations, legal and medical tips for participants in peaceful assemblies, tactics for using online platforms and cell phones, locations and timings of demonstrations on January 25, spreading hotlines numbers for providing immediate legal and medical help by human rights NGOs.

From 25 January to 6 February 2011 Egyptians went through sequential crackdown on communications platforms. Activists mobile lines and hotlines number were shutdown, social websites (including twitter.com, facebook.com, bambuser.com) and other newspapers websites were blocked, short message service (SMS) was shutdown, mobile phone-calls service was shutdown on different intervals, landlines didn’t work in some areas in Cairo and internet connection shutdown. Later on, when communications where restored gradually netizens posted on what happened when communications was shutdown and content showing violations and violence committed against peaceful demonstrators.

Communications was one of the main challenges Egyptians faced, challenge to circulate information between Egyptians inside Egypt and to pass information out of the country.

Before the internet was totally blocked, some activists were able to manage internet access point to post information, videos and pictures from demonstrations and to cover what is happening offline. This is was very important to enable the entire world to understand what is really happening and to prove the government was just spreading rumors and false information. There was, and still, big gap between what individuals post and circulate online and what state-media broadcast and publish. Gap in terms of information and multi-media posted. For example, when netizens and activists posted online pictures of hundreds of thousands demonstrators in Tahrir Square, the state-media was showing a picture of almost an empty Tahrir Square!.

During the revolution, online platforms were the only space where Egyptians could share what they really faced and went through. Its different nowadays, but still online platforms in some cases is almost the only space where Egyptians can address some topics that offline platforms can’t like human rights violations committed by military officers.

Content posted online on different platforms is now helping -and sometimes putting pressure on- offline platforms to address particular topics.

It’s important not to magnify the role of internet and online tools during the revolution; the Egyptian revolution is not “facebook revolution” or “web 2.0 revolution” or similar meaningless terms. Online platforms were the media-arm for Egyptians during the revolution, a space for Egyptians to share their experiences, thoughts and a space to show the truth of what happened.

1. الإفراج الفوري عن جميع المحتجزين الذين ما زالوا رهن الاحتجاز وبدون توجيه اتهامات، والإعلان عن أعداد وأسماء المقبوض عليهم (بما في ذلك من خضعوا لمحاكمات عسكرية) والاتهامات المنسوبة إليهم والأحكام الصادرة ضدهم.

2. إجراء تحقيق مستقل وشفاف في جميع مزاعم التعذيب على يد الشرطة العسكرية على مدار الأسابيع الماضية.

3. التوقف فورا عن استخدام حالة الطوارئ لاصدار مراسيم بقوانين أو اتخاذ إجراءات استثنائية ضد مدنيين. والنظر في أهمية إلغاء حالة الطوارئ الذي يمنح الحاكم العسكري سلطات موسعة في القبض على الأفراد واعتقالهم تعسفاً.

4. إلغاء مرسوم بقانون رقم 34 لسنة 2011 الخاص بحظر الإضرابات والمظاهرات، وضمان الحق في حرية التجمع ووقف انتهاك حقوق المتظاهرين.

5. الإعلان عن عدم التسامح مع أعمال التعذيب من قبل ضباط وزارة الداخلية أو ضباط عسكريين. والتأكيد على الملاحقة القضائية للمجرمين أمام قاضيهم الطبيعي.

6. يجب وضع حد لعمليات الاحتجاز السري.

7. يجب وقف محاكمة المدنيين أمام محاكم استثنائية (محاكم عسكرية ومحاكم أمن الدولة) وإعادة النظر في تلك القضايا أمام القضاء الطبيعي.

8. العمل على ضمان حرية الإعلام بدون أي قيود.

9. الاعتراف بانتهاكات حقوق الإنسان على يد الشرطة العسكرية بعد إجراء تحقيق محايد ومستقل، ومحاسبة المسئولين، والاعتذار وتعويض الضحايا.

10. التوقف عن استخدام المواقع الاجتماعية كمنصة رئيسية لنشر المعلومات والبيانات، وإنشاء موقع الكتروني للمجلس الأعلى للقوات المسلحة.

About the Media Tent in Tahrir Square

One of the first tents set late January in Tahrir Square was by group of friends (including bloggers, human rights defenders, political activists...etc) and most of us were there with our personal laptops, cameras, memory-readers, hard-disks, cables and devices that we might need.

With a sign on the tent that says "point to gather pictures and videos", the main thing we did was gathering all kind of multimedia from demonstrators in Tahrir Square then making the content available online once its possible.

For me, gathering content from people and making it available online via different means was very important because i believed that making those pictures and videos public will help everyone to really understand whats happening on the ground, follow-up the situation and be able to judge, as well as have an overview of what happened in different cities in Egypt as those people who had pictures or videos were not only from Cairo.

Providing this content also helped to prove that the government at that time was just spreading lies, rumors and fake images. The importance of these content is also because of the violations that can be proven through a video (showing a police shooting peaceful demonstrators) or a picture (showing sniper pointing at someone) .

Letter from Army to Egyptian Newspapers: Not to Publish Any Content About the Military

On February 22, Gen. Ismail Etman, head of the Morale Affairs Directorate of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, sent a letter to editors of Egyptian newspapers telling them "not to publish any articles/news/press releases/complaints/advertising/pictures concerning the armed forces or the leadership of the armed forces, except after consulting the Morale Affairs directorate and the Military Intelligence since these are the competent parties to examine such issues to protect the safety of the nation." Human Rights Watch has seen a photocopy of this letter and confirmed its authenticity.

Egypt: Blogger Sentenced to 3 Years for Insulting the Military

Along the many years where the former president Hosni Mubarak ruled the country we didn’t witness large scale of cases where a blogger gets jailed for a blog-post. The first case in Egypt was in 2007 when Kareem Amer was sentenced for 4 years in jail based on blog-posts, he was charged for insulting Islam and Mubarak.

On 6 April 2011, a military tribunal took place against Egyptian blogger Maikel Nabil, 26 years-old, on charges of “insulting the military” and yesterday 10 April the court sentenced Nabil for 3 years in prison.

Maikel Nabil is sent to prison over blog-post he wrote about violations committed by the military offices against civilians since the revolution and criticizing the army in Egypt.

During the past few years, Egyptian activists and journalists have broke many taboos through media platforms. The army and military forces was one of the main taboos during Mubarak’s time and is still a “red-line” in the offline media, and now the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces is threatening the online community by “punishing” netziens for practicing the right to freedom of expression and speaking about the military behavior.

The army in Egypt is sending a clear message that they don’t accept criticism and the charges against Nabil could be easily set against any other Egyptian netizen and human rights defenders to stop them from addressing human rights violations committed by military officers.

المواقع الاجتماعية ليست منصة رئيسية لنشر المعلومات

قررت عدد من مؤسسات الدولة في مصر التواصل مع قطاع مختلف من الشعب وذلك من خلال الشبكة الدولية للمعلومات. وسائل الاعلام الالكتروني مساحة مهمة لتداول المعلومات وتمريرها بين جمهور عريض ولكن الأهم من تداول المعلومات على الانترنت هو كيفية اتاحة المعلومات على الانترنت، والحفاظ على وجودها، وسهولة الوصول اليها.

في وجهة نظري أن المواقع الاجتماعية هي وسائل مكملة لنشر المحتوى المتاح على موقع اي مؤسسة، ايا أن المواقع هي المنصة الرئيسية لنشر المعلومة والمواقع الاجتماعية للمؤسسة يتم من خلالها إعادة نشر المعلومة بأشكال مختلفة طبقا لطبيعة كل موقع اجتماعي.

في 17 فبراير 2011، أنشا المجلس الأعلى للقوات المسلحة صفحة على موقع الفيسبوك لنشر البيانات في حين أن المجلس الأعلى لا يملك موقع خاص به. وفي 27 فبراير أنشا مجلس الوزراء المصري صفحة على موقع الفيسبوك وحساب على موقع التويتر في 2 مارس ولم يقم مجلس الوزراء (حتى اليوم 14 مارس) بالإشارة لتلك الصفحات على الموقع الخاص به. كما لم يتم إصدار اي خبر رسمي من المجلس الأعلى أو مجلس الوزراء بإنشاء تلك الصفحات، في حين قامت وزارة الداخلية بنشر خبر رسمي في 26 فبراير على موقعها بإنشاء صفحة على الفيسبوك وتم الربط بين الموقع وصفحة الفيسبوك بوضع رابط دائم على الصفحة الرئيسية لموقع الوزارة.

السلبيات في رأيي لأسلوب المجلس الأعلى للقوات المسلحة في نشر البيانات على هيئة صور على الموقع فيسبوك:

1- عدم إتاحة البيانات على كافة مستخدمي الانترنت المصريين البالغ عددهم 23 مليون مستخدم (تقرير وزارة الاتصالات وتكنولوجيا المعلومات - ديسمبر 2010) ولا على جميع مستخدمي المصريين لموقع الفيسبوك البالغ عددهم 6.5 مليون مستخدم (تقرير كلية دبي للإدارة الحكومية - مايو 2011) لأنهم جميعا غير مشتركين في صفحة القوات المسلحة.

2- عدم إمكانية البحث عن بيانات المجلس الأعلى لقوات المسلحة باستخدام محركات البحث، لأن البيانات في هيئة صور وليست نص. وآلية نشر الصور لا تسهل عملية الوصول إليها.

3- لا يوجد أرشيف للبيانات الصادرة يمكن الرجوع إليه في أي وقت.

4- عدم قدرة غير الناطقين باللغة العربية على ترجمة البيانات فوريا لان البيان في هيئة صورة.

5- لا أعتقد أن أفضل مكان لنشر معلومات بشكل أساسي هو على موقع تجاري مثل الفيسبوك.

يجب على القائمين على مهام النشر مراعاة توفير المعلومات بأسهل الطرق الممكنة على الجميع، وتمكين الآخرين من الاطلاع وتمرير المعلومات والتفاعل معها بأشكال مختلفة. كما يجب التفكير في إنشاء موقع خاص بالمجلس الأعلى لنشر المعلومات والأخبار وإنشاء وسيلة للشكاوى والبلاغات عبر الموقع.

(تحديث) قرر القائمين على صفحة المجلس الأعلى للقوات المسلحة النشر باستخدام الملاحظات (الـNotes) بدلا من الصور. قد تكون هذه الطريقة أفضل من صيغة الصور ولكن هذه الطريقة لا تعالج كل المعيب ويجب الأخذ في الاعتبار أن المحتوى المنشور على موقع الفيسبوك هو على الموقع فقط.
