CAT 2011 Exams Dates Released

The dates of the Common Admission Test(CAT 2011 - CAT 2012) have been released by the IIMs. The test would be conducted online during a 20-day testing window between October 22, 2011 and November 18, 2011.

This 20 day window for CAT 2011 was released by IIM-K on 25th July. This year CAT 2011 has also introduced 3 new cities namely Dehradun, Jammu and Bhilai in the already existing list of 33 cities making it available in 36 cities this year.

There are also some changes in the test pattern; the CAT 2011 from this year will only have two sections instead of three. The first section will purely focus onQuantitative Ability & Data Interpretation while the second on Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning. With 70 mins time for each section, CAT 2011 will be a 140 mins test spanned over 2 sections of 30 questions each. Each section will have an on-screen countdown timer for 70 mins. Once the time ends for the first section, test will move to next section and will no longer be able to go back. Hence, this year CAT 2011 time format is more like a GRE format.

A 15-mins help guide or kind of tutorial will also be presented before the test begins. The total duration of the exam, including the tutorial would be two hours and 35 minutes.

The official practice test will be made available within days and this will help CAT 2011 aspirants take get the feeling of the test and get familiar with the new format of the test.

Now candidates will also be able to purchase CAT vouchers from 201 Axis Bank branches, an increase of 30 outlets. This was done to reduce the difficulties in purchasing CAT vouchers.

Fed up of your child logging into Facebook at the cost of studies? The Rajasthan government has hit upon a remedy - a social networking site that will also help brush up a youngster's academic knowledge.

"The idea is to utilize the popularity of social networking sites among students. Most of them spend a lot of time on such websites every day," said a senior official of the state's information technology department, which is developing the portal.

The government portal will give tips to students on subjects like physics, chemistry and mathematics. Experts will be roped in to answer the academic queries students post on it.

"We thought why not make it a bit educational so that students can not only enjoy the fun that these sites offer but also get to learn something," the official said.

Students will be able to open up their individual accounts, add friends, upload photographs, play games and interact among themselves just like they do on Facebook.

"What makes it stand out is the fact that there will be subject-specific links on the home page. We will store e-books, objective questions and coaching material related to each subject," the officer added.

The development of the portal is in the final phase, he said. The government should popularise the website by approaching educational institutes across the state, including schools, colleges and coaching centres, said Abhishek Sharma, a volunteer working with a local NGO.

"The students should be encouraged by the institutes to use this portal," said Sharma.

"It will be fun to have such a social networking website. I usually get distracted by these sites, but fun and studies going together must be great. I am eagerly waiting for the site to be launched," said Manu Mishra, a Class 11 student.

Parents have also welcomed the initiative.

"My son spends half of his time on social networking websites which could be utilised for sports or studies. I will definitely encourage him to use the portal being launched by the government as it will at least have some study or course and subject material," said Ramkumar Joshi, parent of a Class 12 student. 24x7 School Education Channel for Students

National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) have submitted a proposal for launching 24X7 television channel to cater to the needs of school education and adultliterary.

The details are as under:
(i) Upgradation of equipment
(ii) Establishing production facilities (studio and communication link with the earth station)
(iii) Augmenting manpower requirement
(iv) Development of e-content
(v) Mapping of programme available with other agencies (Private, NGO and other government agencies)

The Central Institute of Educational Technology, National Council of Educational Research and Training, New Delhi and the National Institute of Open Schooling, NOIDA, Uttar Pradesh will be the lead partners. The Department of Adult Education and its sister agencies in the States, State Institutes of Educational Technology, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghatan, Novodaya Vidyalaya Samiti and other educational agencies in the Centre and the States will be invited to participate and contribute.

Single Entrance Test for College Admissions gets Public Nod

In what could be a turning point in the way college admissions are conducted across the country, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has said that the public responses that it has received regarding the National Testing Scheme (NTS) are favourable and most of the people have recommended a change in the current examination system.

The NTS is based on a single-examination evaluation so that students do not have to appear for multiple entrance examinations conducted across the country by various institutions or consortium of institutions.

A Committee with Dr T. Ramasami, Secretary Department of Science and Technology was constituted by the MHRD to design a National Testing Scheme (NTS) to provide for admission of students to undergraduate courses in Science and Engineering.

In order to obtain a cross-country feedback on the design of the NTS, opinion of the public through a specially designed questionnaire was sought on a range of issues by the Committee. The NTS website was launched in May 2011 to seek responses online and was open till June 21, 2011.

2063 responses were obtained which have been analysed by the Committee. Of the responses, 98.5% were received from India and 11% were received from women. 74% of the respondents had a science or engineering background.

The response received from students was substantial with 59% of the respondents, while 32% were employed and 5% were parents.

An overwhelming majority of the respondents were in favour of the reforms in the examination system with 59% suggesting major changes and 26% advocating partial changes.

The suggestions indicated were preference for a single examination having high knowledge intensity and features such as alignment with the Class XII examination syllabus, affordable examination fee, judicious use of time and money and transparency in examination results.

Substantial support was also indicated for a weighting factor for performance in the School Board examinations at Class XII. 66% of the respondents were in favour of the weighting factor.

Of the respondents who were against the weighting of the Class XII Board examinations for admission to undergraduate programmes, the principal reason cited was of non-uniformity across Boards.

73% of the respondents expressed their preference for National Testing System (NTS).

Support was also evinced for a mix of aptitude and advanced test with 70% expressing their preference for the same.

The Ramasami Committee is also separately undertaken extensive with School Boards and academics. The recommendations of the Committee would be submitted to the Ministry of HRD by September, 2011.

CAT 2011 to be Conducted with Changed Format

This year, numerous changes have been made in the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2011 format.CAT is a common entrance test for admission into the 13 IIMs and other premier B-Schools in the country.

According to the sources, CAT 2011 will have the same number of questions, however, the exam will have two sections instead of three and extra five minutes will be allotted to students in order to attempt the test.

As per an official statement issued by Prometric, the testing agency and IIMs, CAT 2011 will have only two sections. The first section will mainly assess candidate’s quantitative ability and data interpretation, while the other will emphasize on verbal ability and logical reasoning.

Furthermore, the statement informed that the two sections will be applied in order of separate time limits. The exam duration will be 140 minutes and candidates will get 70 minutes to answer 30 questions within each section. Once the time limit ends for the first section, candidates will have to move to the second and will no longer be able to go back, concluded the statement.

In support of the changes made, Prof Janakiraman Moorthy, Convenor, CAT 2011 said that this is a move, which will make the exam more student-friendly. As there are many students who lose out on a seat as they would have failed to perform in one of the sections, he added.

An additional five minutes have also been added to the existing two-and half hours of the exam duration, which includes a 15-minute tutorial that will guide students through the process. Bhilai, Jammu and Dehradun have also been added to the existing 33 test locations of CAT Exam.

This year the CAT 2011 will be conducted between October 22 and November 18, 2011, which implies that there is no change in the number of testing days. Therefore, the number of days remains the same to be 20. However, check-in time for the exam has been reduced by half-an-hour from the previous two hours, which will help in starting the afternoon sessions at 3.15 pm.

Students will have to travel miles for engg entrance exam

Rahul solanki should have been buried in his texts, preparing for the All India Engineering Entrance Exam. Instead, he is working on logistical support to reach his exam centre which is 27 kilometres from home on May 1.

Like him, Akansha Joshi (name changed) will travel from Andheri to Panvel to take the AIEEE. "I can drive my daughter to her centre. But many others will have to take an early train or bus to get to their examination hall. Our first choice was Mumbai, but I guess there aren't enough centres in the city and we have been forced to go to Navi Mumbai," her father A Joshi said.

The AIEEE is the largest engineering entrance test in the country with more than 11 lakh students taking it. This year, the test also went online but only 4,900 students opted for the online version; the rest preferred the pencil-paper mode.

Two years ago, several city students had complained they had been allotted centres in Port Blair and Daman. Students heaved a sigh of relief that they didn't have to book air tickets but many complained of a long travel before a crucial test. "I stay in Colaba, but have been allotted a centre in Anushakti Nagar. I am wondering how to get there as the exam starts at 9 am," Solanki said.

In fact, Solanki wanted to visit the centre before the D-day, but he received his hall tickets only on Wednesday. According to the CBSE, he ought to have obtained it before April 6. "I went to the post office to apply for a duplicate hall ticket to ensure that I have my seat number before the exams," he said.

Officials at the Central Board of Secondary Education, which conducts the entrance exam, said that centres were allotted randomly, based on students' choice of cities. "We only ask students for preferred cities for the exam and not areas. The centre section is done randomly and not manually to ensure security," said Vineet Joshi, chairman of the CBSE board. "We are open to suggestions and if students have a problem, then we will look into it next year."

This year, though, students will have to just start early. "I have to leave at 7 in the morning to ensure I reach the centre on time," said Amarjot Kaur, an aspirant who lives in Goregaon and has her centre at Koliwada. "I have never been there before." (TOI)

GGSIPU Invites Applications for session 2011-2012

The Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) invites applications for admission into the ensuing academic year 2011-2012. Also, the University has announced its three new programmes and admission reforms. The university's application forms went on sale from March 1, 2011. In total there are more than 20,000 seats available in various courses. The university released three brochures for admission to professional programmes (Admission Brochure I); engineering and BArch (Admission Brochure II) and PG medical programmes (Admission Brochure IV).

At a press conference, DK Bandyopadhyay, vice chancellor, said that the university, from this academic session, is going to start three new courses - MBA (hospitality management), MBA (financial market) and BBA (financial market). He also added that the MBA in financial market and BBA in financial market programmes would be launched in association with the National Stock Exchange. Moreover, Bandyopadhyay informed that aspirants can submit the CET 2011 application form and the fee at ipu.admissionhelp.com.

In addition, this year, admissions to around 85 programmes will be through 48 common entrance tests (CETs) for seats in 11 schools of the university and in 103 affiliated institutes. GGSIPU is going to hold the CETs for four of its most sought-after programmes MBA, MBBS, BTech and MCA in Delhi, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Bhopal, Jalandhar, Nagpur, Shimla, Muradabaad, Hisar and Dehradun. The test for other courses will be held only in Delhi.

The application forms are made available at 44 designated branches of Indian Bank, 22 in Delhi and 22 outside. In addition, Bandyopadhyay while elaborating on the changes in the process, said, as a part of the examination reforms carried out by the university, they have decided that the applicant is required to fill the admission form in his own handwriting, which would be crosschecked at various stages of the admission process. He also added to maintain transparency in the admission process, the students will be required to paste a bigger colour photograph with white background. He emphasized that candidates must go through the brochures thoroughly before filling the forms.

CBSE to issue certificates on class evaluation

The Central Board of Secondary Education has asked schools to send in the marks or grades that the school had given students during the second summative assessment so it can issue a uniform certificate for both students who take the board exam and those who take the school-based assessment.

Students planning to migrate from CBSE to another board takes the board exam, while the others take the school exam, which has been considered easier.

CBSE controller of exams MC Sharma, in a letter addressed to principals of affiliated schools, said, "The board has decided to issue uniform certificates to all the Class 10 students appearing for the March 2011 examination irrespective of whether they are assessed by the board or by the school in summative assessment 2. To ensure the reliability, validity and fairness of assessment, the board is collecting marks or grades assigned at the school level through specially designed software."

In addition to collecting these marks or grades, the board will also do a random collection and verification of answer scripts of written tests or other evidence of assessments done at the school level as part of the formative and summative assessments. They will be checked by subject experts appointed by the board at the regional level.

The experts will submit their report on the evidence of assessments with regard to the respective award of marks. This report will be used to vouch for the fairness of the school-based assessments and to ensure the implementation of the continuous and comprehensive evaluation scheme in schools. The board will be undertaking this exercise with the objective of assessing the practices of school-based assessment.

Schools selected by the CBSE regional office should send the answer scripts for summative assessment 1, and formative assessments 3 and 4. Initially this information will be collected for five subjects - Hindi, English, mathematics, science and social science. Schools that are requested to send the EAs by the regional office should send it by March 20.

Senior principal of RMK Group of Schools C Satish said, "This is what schools wanted the CBSE to do. A certificate issued directly by the board to students taking the school-based assessment will add to the credibility of a students's aptitude and skill." (TOI)

AIEE, AFMC MBBS exams timings reschedule

With exam dates of both AIEEE and AFMC MBBS scheduled for the same date on May 1 across thecountry, the respective boards conducting them have decided tohold the tests at separate timings on that day, givingreprieve to candidates appearing for both.

While AIEEE is conducted by CBSE, AFMC entrance test isconducted by Armed Forces Medical Services.

According to a CBSE statement, both have mutually agreedthat AIEEE would be conducted on May 1 from 9.30 am to 12.30pm and AFMC MBBS on the same day from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm.

If a candidate is alloted an examination centre for AIEEEand AFMC at different cities, CBSE will consider to change thecentre of such candidates where AFMC examination centre hasbeen allotted, the statement said.

This is subject to availability of seats and fixationof AIEEE examination centre in that city on production of AFMCentrance examination card.

However, this would be at the sole discretion of CBSE,the statement added.

CBSE, don’t disclose marks of summative assessment II (SA-II) to students of Class X

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked its schools “not to communicate the marks of summative assessment II (SA-II) to the candidates of Class X under any circumstances”.

This year’s batch of Class X students is the first to not take the Board exams, after the CBSE extended the new evaluation scheme of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) to this class as well. The scheme was introduced in Class IX initially.

Students taking the exams in March this year will be awarded grades and grade points in each subject instead of marks.

Under the CCE, students are evaluated throughout the year and both the scholastic and non-scholastic areas are taken into consideration. Summative assessments are the term-ending exams. In each term, there are two formative assessments (that test the non-scholastic areas) and one summative assessment (the pen and paper term-ending exam).

The summative assessment-I for classes IX and X was conducted in the second half of September.

The answer scripts of Class X students, meanwhile, will be evaluated internally by the school. The CBSE has also said they will provide the question paper to the schools. In fact, the CBSE will send a marking scheme to the schools for evaluation of papers by the teachers. Schools, however, have the freedom to involve teachers from other schools for evaluation of the answer scripts.

The CBSE will go for a “random verification of the assessment procedures of schools” through Board officials or nominees appointed by the Board.

The CBSE official said the Board will send separate CDs containing question paper banks for classes IX and X. The school may either pick up one question paper for each subject or mix and match the papers by using different questions or sections from different sets of question papers and prepare a question paper based on the Board’s sample paper, design and blueprint.

The Board also has given a choice to schools to “prepare their own question papers” as per the sample paper available on the CBSE website. In case a school prepares its own question papers, the authorities will have to send the question papers and marking scheme to the Board for verification within a week of conduct of the respective papers, officials said.

For Class IX, the Board plans to dispatch the CDs containing question papers to all schools that they to reach by February 20. The SA-II of both classes IX and X starts in March.

CBSE to help fight student stress, by discussing students' problems on phone

To give students in classes X and XII relief from the examination stress, Central Board of Secondary Education will be starting its counselling sessions from Monday. Twenty counsellors from across the country will listen to students' problems over the phone. Any issue related to upcoming exams can be discussed with them.

"The purpose of these counselling sessions is to relieve the children from the pressure that they might be facing and help them maintain their mental health," said CBSE counsellor Rakesh Sachdeva, who is principal of DAV Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 15.

The programme that was started 13 years ago by the board saw great success in the city in 2009. Around 500 calls were received in the two months off the helpline's opening. This year also, counsellors are hoping to help many children.

"I am already getting calls from students about various things like the system of continuous and comprehensive examination, places where they can download question papers, format of CBSE exams and the syllabus as well. We will handle calls from students from all over India. Parents, teachers and students should read circular no. 5 for issues related to the exams on the CBSE website," said

counsellor Madhu Bahl, principal of KBDAV, Sector 7.

Students and parents can call on the helpline numbers to talk about any problems pertaining to the exams. Counsellors are also equipped to talk about ways to deal with examination stress. The helplines will be open for students and parents to call 24 hours a day till March 31. Anonymity of the callers would be maintained.(TOI)

New IIMs planned to have a joint Admission process this year

The new Indian Institutes of Management, (IIMs) namely IIM Ranchi, IIM Rohtak and IIM Raipur, along with IIM Trichy have planned a joint admission process this year. An initiative by IIM Ranchi’s director MJ Xavier, the gesture will see through common group discussions and personal interviews of around 3,000 successful CAT candidates. Pagalguy spoke to MJ Xavier to find out why this exercise was mooted.

Why a joint admission process for the new IIMs?

I basically believe in collaboration rather than competition, which I had made clear when I took over as the Director of IIM Ranchi. Luckily my Chairman Mr. R C Bharghava too has similar views and has put it in the IIM Review Committee Report submitted to the Ministry of HRD. In principle, we want to collaborate in many more aspects than just admissions; that includes sharing of resources and common sourcing to gain cost efficiency. This will help us build more efficient institutions that would soon be able to measure up to global standards.

With regard to admissions, the Directors of the four new IIMs met in the Noida campus of IIM Lucknow on 18th January and decided to work together. Apart from gaining cost efficiency for the Institutes, it would save time and money of the students. When we can have a common admissions test, why can’t we agree to have a common GD/PI process? However the final selection by the individual institutes will be based on their own criteria.

Will the criteria for these admissions be different from the other older IIMs?

Though the PI Score will be common to all the four IIMs, the final selection by individual institutes will be based on their own criteria and weightage for different components, such as work experience, academic performance, extra curricular activities, CAT score, PI scores etc.

Professor Rameshan of IIM Rohtak has put out comprehensive criteria for shortlisting of candidates, which will be followed by those of IIM Raipur and IIM Trichy. We are using our own criteria for shortlisting candidates. Since IIM Ranchi would like to be known in the field of Analytics, we have given greater weightage to CAT score and consequently our CAT cut-off is higher than that of others. Average CAT score of our current batch is higher than that of IIMA as they look for many other aspects including consistent academic performance in Xth, XIIth and UG level. My belief is that people who have seen ups and downs in life would be better equipped to manage the turbulent business environment. So I am not averse to looking at candidates with a lot of variability – in terms of academics and CAT components.

Is there some criteria change in IIM Ranchi compared to the first year?

No. My mentor Institute – IIMC, has set the right tone for the institute by selecting students with high CAT score for the first batch. We will continue with the same.

Are you satisfied with the profile of the first batch of students? Do you prefer fewer engineers like IIML?

I am extremely happy with the profile of the first batch. I would not like to force diversity into the programme. We shall achieve it by offering various programmes. For example, we plan to offer a two year programme on Business Analytics that will attract students with specialisations in statistics, mathematics, econometrics, linguistics, psychometrics etc.

How will joint admissions be done practically? Will there be a common panel to handle the GDPI?

One of the IIMs will play the co-ordinator’s role each year. To start with, IIM Rohtak will be the nodal point for the GD/PI process this year. Individual institutes will send the list of shortlisted candidates for interview to the nodal institute which will consolidate and work out the interview schedules.

We plan to have four centres, namely Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. We have allotted responsibility to the centres as below.

Bangalore- 28th February to March 6th – IIM Ranchi

Mumbai – March 8th to 13th – IIM Trichy

Delhi – 15th to 22nd March- IIM Rohtak

Kolkata – 26th to 30th March-IIM Raipur

The co-ordinating institutes will arrange for the venue and panels for the GD and PI. However uniform criteria will be used at all the centres for assessing candidates. Apart from the four centers, IIM Ranchi, Rohtak and Raipur will have interviews in their headquarters on April 2nd.

Logically, should not the mentor colleges work on admissions with their respective partners?

Of course, yes. IIM Ranchi made this common GD/PI move only with the concurrence of IIMC and with the blessings of our Chairman Mr. R C Bhargava. Until we learn to get up and walk, we would continue to seek the support of our respective mentor institutions. We should be able to do that soon so that we can grow out to build our own individual identity and set benchmarks in line with the global standards.

Is the intake of students being increased?

Yes, It has been decided that IIM-Ranchi will admit 70 students in its postgraduate diploma in management (PGDM) programme for the 2011-13 session, while IIM Raipur and IIM Trichy will admit 60 students each and IIM Rohtak about 120 students.

Application Form of BSNL – Telecom Technical Assistant (TTA) Exam

The TTA Exam is held by the BSNL for the recruitment of eligible candidates into the Technical Assistant post.

Eligibility for Application
The candidates who are applying for this exam must be Indian residents. They must be no less than 18 years and not more than 27 years at the time of applying. Candidates of the backward category have a relaxation up to 5 years. Aspirants must have cleared their Diploma course in Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology and Radio Engineering or in Electronics Engineering. Those who have finished their course in Electrical Engineering, Instruments Technology or in Computer Engineering can also apply for the TTA exam. Candidates who have cleared the Masters in Electronics course are also entitled to apply. The candidates must have scored atleast 40 percent marks in their final exams. (33% marks for the candidates belonging to the reserved categories.)

Application Procedure
The candidates can procure the application by two methods. They are:

Online Application
It is possible for the candidates to download the application from and the brochure from the authorized website of the BSNL. The filled up application should be mailed to the office of the BSNL along with a DD of Rs. 500/-. (No fees are necessary for the SC/ST/OBC candidates). All the necessary documents should be attached with the form.

Offline Application
The application fee can either be bought directly from the BSNL office of it can be obtained through post. The price of the application fee is Rs. 500 for general candidates. No fees are required from the candidates of the backward communities. Those candidates who wish to receive their forms by post must send a request letter to The Accounts Officer, BSNL, CGMT’s Office. A DD of the correct amount along with the relevant documents must be sent along with the letter. The form is supposed to be mailed by speed or registered post only.

Filling the Application Form

The Candidates ought to read the brochure before filling the form.
The candidates should fill the form in English only.
The candidates must fill the form only in capital letters.
The candidates should use only black or blue pens when they fill the form.

Schools told to hold 10th exam as per CBSE norms

Schools affiliated to the CBSE will conduct and evaluate Class X examinations for those who have opted out of appearing for the board examinations this year, but the board will still run the show when it comes to designing question papers, scheduling examinations, announcing results and presenting certificates.

The schools will hold examinations for students who have opted out of appearing for the board examination scheduled to begin on March 1. While the CBSE will not directly monitor conduct of the examination, schools affiliated to it are expected to prepare question paper banks devised by the board. They will be given the option of either picking a question paper or mix and match different question papers as long as they maintain weightage given to various sections.

Schools can also prepare their own question papers in accordance with the CBSE blueprint, but they will have to email the papers to the board for verification within a week of their preparation.

Across the country, there are nearly eight lakh students studying in Class X in schools affiliated to the CBSE. While the board has not officially declared the number of students who have opted to appear for the board exam, the number is expected to be around five lakh. In Karnataka, according to CBSE statistics, nearly 15,000 students study in Class X in 126 schools across the state. In 2010, 14,329 students appeared for the board exam.

According to the CBSE, the evaluation of answer scripts will be done by school teachers on the basis of the marking scheme provided by the board. However, schools will be subjected to random verification of the assessment procedures by CBSE officials or nominees appointed by the board.

Schools also do not have much freedom when it comes to holding the examination. The CBSE has announced that schools will have to conduct the final Class X exam by the second half of March. They have also been advised to hold examination for English (Communicate/Language and Literature) and Science after March 23.

Under the newly introduced Continous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) scheme, four formative assessments and two summative assessments will be held in an academic year.

The minimum cut off marks for short listing after written test is 50% for UR and 45% for OBC/SC/ST/PH candidates. Candidates will be called for interview and group discussion in the ratio of 1:5. Management Trainee will undergo training for six months. Only stipend will be paid to them at the rate of Rs 8500/- pm during the training period. Candidates applying for the post of Management Trainee (Accounts) in addition to the post of Management Trainees (Genl/Depot and Movt) are required to register separately for both options on the online application portal and submit two separate demand drafts of Rs 300/- each

SC/ST/PH candidates are exempted from payment of fees, subject to submission of caste/ disability certificate from appropriate authority in support of his/her claim

Application can be made in online mode only. The candidates have to fill all the details online, then take a print out of filled form, affix photo and put signatures at designated places and then send the form along with demand draft and photocopies of certificates to the post box number as given on website by ordinary post. Please note that five separate portals are active for five different Zones. A candidate may apply for one Zone or more than one Zone but he has to go through the recruitment process separately for each Zone from application stage till selection

Class X CBSE students to appear for 1st ever aptitude test tomorrow

Students of class X from CBSE schools are looking forward to the first-ever Students Global Aptitude Index (SGAI) exam on Saturday. The approximately two-and-a-half hourpaper-and-pencil test is set to comprise a battery of aptitude tests combining the interest profile of a student.

"Students are looking forward to it but there is no stress about the exam. We don't really know too much about what we will be writing so everyone is keeping cool. We are going in with an open mind. We were told it would test our intelligence quotient, scientific, mathematical and general knowledge," said Dhruv Bhat D of P S Senior Secondary School in Mylapore.

Students had been told they could take the Board-conducted optional proficiency test in May for their five main subjects, he added. This test was intended to assess students' ability to understand and apply concepts from their learning of a subject to real-life situations.

In earlier circulars, the CBSE had pointed out that the SGAI was meant for students of secondary classes, a period which coincides with the onset of adolescence and the formation of rudimentary career concepts. It is crucial to give a child a road map that is realistic and favourable at this time, the note added.

Pointing out that the initiative was likely to prove a good move in the long run, Valli Arunachalam, principal, PSBB Senior Secondary School, Nungambakkam, said it would provide students with the opportunity to do a lot of introspection.

"We expect the SGAI will give students an idea of where their aptitude lies and the course they can select in class XI. We were told the test is designed to help students make these decisions. The CBSE will give schools a scoring sheet based on which students will be evaluated. We hope the results from the exam will come out before students have to select their courses," said Malathy Srinivasan, principal, Devi Academy Senior Secondary School, Valsaravakkam.(TOI)
