{Guest Post from The Rogue Bride} 5 Registry Items You Haven’t Thought Of

Cris has done an amazing job of giving me registry ideas – I’ve created my registries with half my laptop screen on Kiss My Tulle and half the screen on the websites of Macy’s, Etsy, William Sonoma and Sur La Table. But, as thorough as her series is, I’ve thought of a few additional items to add to the list.

1. Restaurant Gift Cards: When you get back from your honeymoon, you’ll have loads of work to catch up on and you will NOT feel like cooking. Give yourself a break, or a date night out, by letting your guests treat you to dinner at your favorite restaurants. You can’t register for these off of the Macy’s website of course, but Amazon makes it easy (or Restaurant.com).

2. Everyday Stoneware: Forget Fine China! You’ll use it once a year if you’re ambitious. I’d much rather dine off hand thrown clay pottery every day. Pottery is cool because: It’s art you can appreciate at breakfast, lunch and dinner; pie plates and casserole dishes are natural conversation starters at potluck parties; most potters use lead-free glaze; each piece is literally one of a kind; and it’s cheaper than Lenox. Find your favorite potter on Etsy (I recommend RikaBlue, ClayCoyote, and Terry Myhren) and politely ask them if they’d be willing to set up a registry for you.*

*Etsy is a little more labor intensive than a chain store when you’re setting up a registry because you have to – gasp! – deal with human beings. You have to contact the artist and warn them your guests are coming, because they have to make the stuff! Ask them to set up a registry for you on their Etsy page by reserving orders in your name. Then name the pieces you want and set up a link to your Etsy registry on your wedding website. It’s not exactly easy, but I think it’s well worth the extra effort.

3. Gift Certificate for Custom Framing: Because sometimes you want your wedding or honeymoon photo blown up real big and want to display it in something classier than a Walmart poster frame.

4. A French Press Coffee Maker with an Etsy Coffee Cozy: Once you’ve had coffee from a French Press, you may never go back to the American coffeemaker. I got hooked in England, where our monster coffee pots are nowhere to be found, and have never looked back. But the one thing my French Press needs is something to keep it hot longer: A Coffee Cozy! Etsy has super cute ones.

5. One Completely Frivolous Thing: For me, it’s a Moroccan wedding blanket. Google it. These things are gorgeous. White, soft, with silver spangles. Great for wall-hangings, throw-blankets, even rugs (though I cringe at the thought of stepping on anything so pretty). What is your one completely frivolous thing?

Wedding Wednesday: Planning Our Engagement Session

So this Wedding Wednesday I have a SUPER COOL request – help me plan my engagement session. Eeeeee! Yup, it’s that time – I was contacted by our photographer, Miranda Laine Photography, and she asked me for ideas for locations or a theme for The Boy and my engagement session. I Am So Excited!

But, I’m a little stressed right now (new job and all) and I could use some help with ideas. Specifically, we have NO desire to do a stylized or costume engagement session. I just want photos of us looking natural and like the photographer happened to stumble upon us out doing something together. I would also like us to wear normal clothes (but look a little nicer than normal). Here are a couple of photos that I found around the Internet that I really like:

So what do y’all think? Should we stick to an outdoor location or try and do something around San Antonio? The Boy loves fishing and hunting and we both really love baseball so maybe something along those lines? The Ranty Bride: {Fun Fact} I Pick the Best Wedding Music OR Never Trust a Big Butt and a Smile

I take selecting music very seriously. I'm a fan of songs across all genres, though, being from Cleveland - where Poison still sells out - I have a soft spot in my heart for glam rock.

Regardless, picking music that will keep your guests dancing is harder than it may seem. You need songs that will keep people of mixed ages, backgrounds, and rhythmic ability shaking what their mamas gave them, while mixing in an adequate amount of slower stuff because it's a wedding, and people (i.e., moms) like an excuse to force other people (i.e., dads) to slow dance.

Many make the mistake of trying to cater to their audience's existing tastes. So, your DJ's online "most picked songs" are probably things like "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang and "You Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC and - shoot me now - the "Cha Cha Slide." There, you have selections that are fairly inoffensive and they attract middle aged aunts and uncles to the dance floor like white on rice.

The problem? When you really, really think about it - they're not good songs to DANCE to. They're kind of slow and clunky. And do you really need five minutes of someone TELLING you exactly how to dance ("Everybody clap your hands!" ***clapclapclapclapclapclapclap*** Ugh.).

So, how do you keep the Engelbert Humperdink loving grandmas, the disco loving aunts, and the Bieber loving teenagers on the dance floor?

Enter MY PERFECT MIX OF 90S RAP AND TRASHY POP SONGS FROM ALL ERAS.

When you see the list, you'll realize why it's so, well, EPICLY AWESOME. 90's rap songs have a good beat that's made for dancing, and they're not SO dirty that your grandma will blush. Hell, she probably won't even know what they're talking about. I still don't know how to pop, lock, or drop it. Then, add in some more recent pop songs. The more they get stuck in your head, the better (I'm looking at you, "Moves like Jagger"). The teenagers will keep the party going. Mix in a couple token slow songs, a few motown hits, and one disco anthem - which probably qualfies under the trashy pop bucket anyway - and you're good to go.

Now, whether you include line dancing music is a personal decision that only you can make. Personally, I pretty much HATE EVERY SINGLE LINE DANCING SONG (with any exceptions listed below). Each time something like the "Electric Slide" is played - that's 3-5 minutes of my life I'll never get back. I realize some people like them - hell, I was pretty much accosted by a drunken guest who was IRATE that I had the "Electric Slide" on my NO list - but they make me want to punch someone in the face. And? Someone always humps the ground during the "Cha Cha Slide" in an effort to prove how low they can truly go. TRUST ME.

Anyhow, I've gotten a TON of compliments on the wedding music mix, especially from people I thought would be the least happy about it - the big disco and classic rock fans, and the younger folks who probably aren't as old as half of these songs. So, dearest readers, I'm sharing my ultimate wedding playlist with you to help keep your party bumping.

And, if you think it's a bit unconventional - well, I'll give you my wedding music, too. It was all on piano, in a lovely 100+ year old church. And it was epic. My dream for my reception? To have a string quartet playing dirty rap songs ("Is that Ludacris?"), but we were on a budget. Maybe for wedding #2.

Wedding Porn: Using Wedding Cake and Desserts to Pick your Wedding's Theme

ruggling to figure out some kind of theme for your wedding (and NOT of the Shrek variety...)? Well, here's some good news - it's easy. Really, really, stunningly easy. Just pick a color that you like (i.e. coral), pick two colors that look good with that color (such as navy and blush), and then finish the theme off with two neutrals (like cream and grey). BOOM!!! Done. There's your wedding theme.

Fitness Friday: New Routine, New Eating, New Clothes... And Hot Patrick

It’s another Fitness Friday, y’all and I’ve got tons of news. First, a confession – I forgot to weigh myself this week so I could share my progress (or backward slide) with you. Sorry about that – I have a good reason. I very unexpectedly got full-time job (walked in for an interview for a 2 month contract and walked out with a full-time job and a paid-time off for my honeymoon!) and it’s shot my whole fitness and eating schedule to hell. However, all is not lost because right before I got my job – my trainer (I hired him y’all!) Hot Patrick (that may or may not be his real name) reworked everything - my cardio, my strength training, and my eating.

Honestly, I was a wee bit nervous about my initial consultation with Hot Patrick because I’ve never done one before and I’m not some teeny tiny girl or cardio queen. I mean, here I am sitting in a room and asking for help when the day before I’d eaten a bacon cheeseburger and blown off my triceps workout! Loser. But I gotta tell you – that consultation was one of the best things I have ever done. I walked in there with my little workout journal (a spiral notebook where I recorded all of my sets/reps/weight and cardio) and a quickly scrawled list of goals.

And Hot Patrick listened. That was amazing to me – a personal trainer who didn’t judge or lecture. He just listened (even when I started crying while talking about the stress from my father’s illness and passing) and asked questions. We discussed my goals and I mentioned that my dream goal was to be that one chick in the weight room that’s such a bad ass, even the guys are impressed.

My Goals (as given to Hot Patrick)

Short term: fit into my wedding dress really well, jog for ten minutes straight, and reach my ideal weight
Long term: maintain weight, continue lifting heavier weights, and have healthy babies
Fitness: do an unassisted pull-up, hold full plank for 1 minutes for 3 sets, and 3 sets of 12 full push-ups
Shallow: have thighs smaller than my head, fit into smaller pants, and not jiggle when I wave to people

On our second meet-up, Hot Patrick went through a new routine with me and talked to me about a few new eating methods to try. All of it was perfectly tailored to me and designed to kick my ass (something I had asked for). My new routine has me working my upper body one day (5 sets of 5 reps each at the heaviest weight possible) and lower body on alternate days (5 sets of 5 reps each at the heaviest weight possible) with 30-45 minutes of cardio every day. My strength training is really focusing on working individual sides of my body while also working large muscle groups at the same time. My cardio is now taking me off the elliptical and only doing a bit on treadmill (Hot Patrck was concerned about an old and lingering bad knee injury of mine). Now I’m doing lots of random body weight cardio exercises in 30 bursts with 1 minutes of rest in between (burpees, scissor jumps, jump rope, step-ups, etc.). He even got me on the rowing machine (but only for about 10 minutes at a time because I got REALLY bored with more).

So, I’m pretty damn stoked y’all. I’m still struggling to work exercise into my new schedule but I’ve managed it the best that I can and I’m going to continue to pack my gym bag the night before, put on my workout clothes before I leave work, and go straight to the gym from my job. It’s tough and I’m pretty exhausted by the time I get home but… I’m doing it.

And I'm super duper excited because the new job means I can finally afford to splurge on new gym clothes! What what! This is especially appropriate since I discovered last night (while at the supermarket) that my only yoga pants had a hole in the crotch. Aaaand I wasn't wearing underwear. Awesome. But I'm a bit stuck - what brands and clothing items should I invest in? I'm also in the market for some new shoes. I have flat feet and do both cardio and strength training regularly so I burn through shoes in 5-6 months. Any recommendations, ya'll?

Yep, that’s right – I said register for martini glasses. And I mean it. GET THEE TO A CRATE & BARREL, ASAP! Registering within weeks of getting engaged was one of the BEST decisions that The Boy and I made in those early days of pre-nuptial craziness. People wanted to give us gifts (in general, for our birthdays, for Christmas, etc.) and being able to direct them to our registries was great (for us and for them). No fuss.

Wedding Wednesday: Help Me Figure Out This Friggin' Fabric Ceremony Alter

Well, I’m fucked. I have got quite the little wedding DIY dilemma for y’all this Wedding Wednesday and I’m too lazy confused to figure it out on my own. Soooo, it’s Tulle Nation to the rescue!!! Dun Dun Dah Duuuun!

First up, I should disclose that last week I unintentionally landed myself a “real” job. Walked into an interview for a 2 month contract gig (we needed to build up our savings again after last year’s suckfest of last minute traveling) and walked out with a full-time job. It’s a great company and I adore my work environment (And my bosses? Married and the cutest things EVER!) but…

Now I’m struggling to fit the gym, The Boy time, cleaning my house, and wedding stuff into a few hours every day (Common enough problems, no? Y'all, I was SPOILED before!). And so, when a DIY I planned on being so simple turns into something else… I call on Tulle Nation to help me figure it out. Specifically, I need some help creating this:

I LURVE IT! We are getting married under a huge oak tree on our property (the main branch is a good 10 or 15 feet long and forms a perfect arch). I want to have one of these fabric streamer thingies across the entire length of the oak tree’s branch.

So all year long I’ve been collecting old cream, white, or beige sheets with the intention of dyeing them different shades of blue and making one of those suckers. Easy-peasy, right? Um. Not so much. Here’s what I got from the first two batches:

Less like the gorgeous ocean hues I was hoping for and more like those ugly ass scrubs that doctors wear. HELP!!! I used a bottle of liquid RIT dye in Azure Blue on the first 4-5 sheets and a bottle of liquid RIT dye in Teal for the next batch of 4-5. I followed the instructions exactly (added salt and pre-wetted the sheets). I have a high-efficiency washing machine and did it as a heavy duty load on the hottest cycle (and added in the recommended extra rinse). The sheets all dyed beautifully (no streaking or missed spots) – it’s just that the colors are not pretty.

So, Tulle Nation – what do I do? I have more sheets and time to dye them but do any of you know how to create the lovely aqua, turquoise, and robin’s egg blues that I’m hoping for? Any specific dye company recommendations or tips on using RIT dyes better? Anyone work for a fabric dye company who’d like to share some ideas with me??? Let me know, please – I’m flummoxed.

Valentine's Mushy Stuff OR 14 Reasons I Love The Boy

Other than on Wedding Wednesdays and the twice-a-month Fitness Friday – I don’t really use this blog to talk about myself or my life. I prefer to keep things strictly budget wedding inspirational and informative. However, y’all know that I’m a bad ass and a rule breaker. So, brace yourselves… On this Valentine’s Day, I wanted to talk a wee bit about The Boy. You know, this guy:

I know, I know. Ladies… hold yourselves back. If you think you can control yourselves - here’s 14 Reasons I Love The Boy on This Valentine’s Day:

He has cute buns. Seriously, they distract me. Sometimes I walk into stuff.
When I asked him to marry me about a year before our “real” wedding, he didn’t hesitant to say yes. And is still moderately interested in our May 2012 wedding.
He’s super excited to have babies with me. And if that doesn’t happen naturally – he’s super excited to adopt babies with me. And he’s super excited to maybe do both… for funsies.
He sat very, very quietly and watched football on mute so I could run my mouth off on a Bridal Koolaid Cocktail Hour podcast.
He was pretty thrilled when I suggested adding fried chicken to our wedding reception menu. Mmmmm… fried chicken…
He misses me a lot when we’re apart. He’s always calls, texts, or video chats me several times every day we’re apart. Annnnnd – AWWWWWWW!
Every weekend he gets me 2 bean and cheese tacos for breakfast - even if he’s headed out the door fishing or to the deer blind.
He has the prettiest blue eyes that crinkle up when he smiles or laughs.
He teaches me something new every day. Even if it’s something I have zero interest in. Like cars or power lines or fishing reels.
While we were a one car family (and I had no license), he would work all day and then let me drag him around the mall or craft store with no complaints.
For his birthday and Christmas all he ever asks for is a hooker. It’s charming.
He supports me, he believes in me, and he thinks I’m pretty.
He happily cracks jokes with me and makes me laugh every day.
His hands fit perfectly in mine… as do other parts of him….

In other words – I adore this man. He celebrated his 45^th birthday yesterday and that, combined with today’s holiday o’ luuuurve, makes me all mushy inside for him. Also, I’m pretty sure that he’s going to be particularly amazing this Valentine’s Day – not because he’s super romantic or planning fancy-schmancy stuff for me. No, this V-Day will be a special one because it’s my first one without my dad (who absolutely LOVED Valentine’s Day). Every year, without fail, my daddy got me a Valentine’s card that he had carefully picked out just for me… today’s gonna be a tough one without that card in my mailbox. But, I know that The Boy will come through and help me get through it.

So, how about y’all? What do you adore about your special one? I’d love it if you shared it with me… even if it’s super shallow… fuck, who am I kidding? I want to know ESPECIALLY if it's super shallow.

Wedding Porn: Using Valentine's Day to Pick your Wedding's Theme

Struggling to figure out some kind of theme for your wedding (and NOT of the Shrek variety...)? Well, here's some good news - it's easy. Really, really, stunningly easy. Just pick a color that you like (i.e. coral), pick two colors that look good with that color (such as navy and blush), and then finish the theme off with two neutrals (like cream and grey). BOOM!!! Done. There's your wedding theme.
