1. You are busy going up the career ladder

You are both career driven, you love your work and your work is your life. Period. But that doesn't mean you can't do relationships. Looks like a long distance relationship is perfect for you, because you are both comfortable connecting when you have the time for it. When the career settles down and you are both ready for it, you could take the plunge, but not just yet.

How to Use Strong and Secure Passwords

Article about how we can come up with string and secure passwords. Explains the methods hackers use for breaking into the accounts and also tells about a few password managers.
In all probability, most of us would be aware that using obvious or guessable passwords such as “password” or your pet's name isn't a good idea at all.

But then what options do you really have to come up with a strong and secure password?

First things first, you should have a different, fairly long and very strong password for each account. It's tempting to use the same password for all of your online accounts, but doing so puts every account in jeopardy if one of them gets hacked.

To break into accounts, hackers often employ a method called “dictionary attack”, which involves using words straight from the dictionary to guess the passwords. So it is strongly recommended that you don't use standard words as your passwords; rather try creating meaningless words from a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. And don't just replace letters in a word with a simple (e.g. 'A' with the @ symbol) because that's a very common trick. The password can be strengthened by using a blend of lower and uppercase letters.

The password should be quite complicated. But still, try and use something which you would be able to remember. Come up with something which incorporates various alphanumeric characters. Ideally, it should be a mnemonic sort of thing which you can instantly memorise. But if you see that this is not happening then spend some time in memorizing that password.

Now remembering more than one passwords can be a daunting task. This is where a password manager comes into the picture. KeePass is a fairly good, free password-management tool that runs on Windows and Mac OS X. It stores all the passwords in one encrypted database which can be accessed by a single master password.

Then there's a multi-platform password manager called LastPass which comes with the capability of auto-syncing different computers and browsers, thereby, giving you the access to your encrypted database from any device. However, the catch here is that you sacrifice the security of keeping your password list combined to a single drive.

These password managers are great but not 100% safe. The best password is the one you generate yourself, which is highly complicated with a mix of upper and lower case letters, symbols and numbers. The trick lies in picking up a short phrase or a long word and get creative with it.

100 years after Titanic disaster

As the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic nears next month the public's interest in the tragedy has not diminished.
On April 10, 1912, the Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage, traveling from Southampton, England, to New York.
It was nicknamed the "Millionaire's Special".
The ship was fittingly captained by Edward J. Smith, who was known as the "Millionaire's Captain" because of his popularity with wealthy passengers.
Onboard were a number of prominent people, including American businessman Benjamin Guggenheim, British journalist William Thomas Stead, and Macy's department store co-owner Isidor Straus and his wife, Ida.
Here is a look at the disaster and its aftermath:

THE DISASTER:
-- The liner struck an iceberg late on April 14 and sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912. The ship's starboard side scraped along the iceberg. At least five of its supposedly watertight compartments toward the bow were ruptured.
-- After assessing the damage, as the ship's forward compartments filled with water, its bow would drop deeper into the ocean, causing water from the ruptured compartments to spill over into each succeeding compartment, thereby sealing the ship's fate.
-- Of the 2,223 passengers and crew aboard the ship, dubbed "unsinkable" before departure, 1,517 died. Third class suffered the greatest loss - of approximately 710 on board, only some 174 survived. Seventy-six percent of the crew died.

Unseen Titanic: New images of shipwreck

100 YEARS ON:
-- U.S. and British investigations proposed various safety recommendations just after the sinking, and in 1913 the first International Conference for Safety of Life at Sea was called in London. The conference drew up rules requiring that every ship have lifeboat space for each person embarked; that lifeboat drills be held for each voyage.
-- In September 1985, the first underwater images of the Titanic were recorded as its giant boilers were discovered. Later video showed the ship lying upright in two pieces.
-- In addition to being the subject of numerous books, the ship inspired various movies, notably "A Night to Remember" (1958) and James Cameron's blockbuster "Titanic" (1997).
-- Millvina Dean, the last survivor of the 1912 sinking died in June 2009. She was 97. Dean was just nine weeks old when her family sold a pub they owned in London to travel on the maiden voyage of the passenger liner and begin a new life in Wichita, Kansas, in the United States, where her father Bertram hoped to open a tobacconist shop.
-- Researchers assembled in March 2012 a field map of the wreck. The mapping team snapped 130,000 photos throughout 2010 using two underwater robots and using solar imaging to create the most in-depth picture yet of the 3-mile by 5-mile swath of wreckage.

What you give someone for a present can make them remember you or dislike you forever! These tips will help you with ideas for the perfect present.

Gift

Don't show-off: Buying a superexpensive present to demonstrate your purchasing power is vulgar and boorish. Gifts are meant to express love and appreciation. Also be occasion-appropriate. Don't, for example, give gold earrings for a friend's anniversary, even if you can afford it. Appropriate (safe if somewhat dull) presents include chocolates, wine or flowers for a dinner party; a coupon to buy books/DVDs/clothes for a birthday; a DVD player for a niece's wedding; and watches for your parent's 50th anniversary. But remember, inexpensive does not mean poor quality. So whatever you buy, whether it is flowers or chocolates, do your research, buy the best you can.

Make it personal: Your thoughtfulness is what makes the difference between a good present and a great one. If you want your surprise to be perfect, invest a little time to figure out what the person will really enjoy. It may not always be something the person requires; it is better to gift something he or she wants but does not really need - gifts are, after all, a matter of indulgence. So gifting your parents a luxury weekend works better than yet another shawl or saree.

WHILE SUPPORT for Anna Hazare pours in on Facebook and Twitter at the speed of light, and the government plans to snoop on our Facebook accounts to check for anti-social activities, on the other side of the globe, teenagers in Boston are being educated about how to break up with dignity on Facebook.

Social media websites can spark revolutions and bring down governments and at the same time enable you to peek into the life of a former love interest and ruin his/her image. A post on Facebook or Twitter can have several social and political implications. To quote cyber law expert Pavan Duggal, “It is a potent game changer in our lives.” But is the iPad/ Blackberry/ Android generation really ready to handle social media – the platform and huge database of information it offers? “ It is a mixed bag. While there are youngsters who are out there making good use of the Internet, there are others who are not able to handle social media with maturity. It is hard to make a sweeping generalisation and say that youngsters are abusing the Internet.

What’s true is that today’s youth is alive to the power of social media and is ready to ride the tiger without realising the consequences,” says Duggal. He adds that five to six out of ten youngsters won’t think twice before doing something impulsively on a social networking website.

“There have been wake up calls. But they have been few and far in between. A lot of awareness and education is required for youngsters using the Internet. The government should include social media in the school curriculum. But unfortunately it is not a priority area for the government,” he says.

So when a clueless mouse-happy generation goes about posting objectionable pictures, taking zero-IQ quizzes, snooping on an ex’s profile and breaking up with lovers, there is a need of a code of etiquette that should be followed. We list some of them:

UNFRIEND

WHEN Femail Magazine carried an article on whether it is ethical to snoop on your ex’s Facebook profile, a reader wrote: “I was in a serious relationship for about a three-and-a-half years.

We had a sour break-up which left me feeling empty, but now I’m all upbeat to carry on with my life. My ex-girlfriend and I are on FB, but instead of snooping into each others’ lives we opted not to have any connections at all ever again. We have blocked and ignored each other since the time we had a break-up... and also we have made sure we don’t have any mutual friends, so we both remain away from what’s happening in our life or any updates about one another.” Besides blocking out the past, the unfriend application on FB can be put to some good use. A six-monthly friend filter procedure won’t do you any harm. You might have added some unwanted people to your friends list. You won’t regret the cleansing ritual.

RELATIONSHIP STATUS

THERE may not be a survey for this, but a change in the relationship status invites the maximum number of comments within an hour of posting it. It is the best way to attract attention. The relationship status platter on Facebook is full of choices – single, in a relationship, engaged, married, it’s complicated, open relationship, divorced and separated.

But just one word of advice — before advertising your relationship status and inviting a flurry of comments, consult your partner (or ex in case you want to go from ‘in a relationship’ to ‘single’) first. It should really come as a shock to him/ her.

NOT COOCHY-COO WALL

LOVE is no longer private. Sure our sensor board has no problems with kissing scenes. In fact with shows like Bigg Boss topping charts, voyeurism has reached its peak. But public displays of affection, and paeans of love on the Facebook Wall of your beloved is a bit too much to handle.

Posts that rightfully belong to the private message column are out for the whole world to read. “ It is a distraction and is pretty embarrassing. I often feel, how could I be friends with such filmi lovebirds? But that’s how some people are,” says Ankit Khurana, 34, businessman.

“We know you are in love, but at least have the discretion of letting some things be private,” he adds. Just a suggestion, learn the difference between a Facebook Wall and a message and save the coochy- cooing for the latter. No one is interested on how much you miss or love your ‘baby’. FB BREAK- UP HOW much courage do you really need to face your love interest (in whom you have lost interest) and talk out your differences and have an amicable break up? What’s disturbing is that there is a race among boys and girls as to who announces the break- up by changing his/her relationship status to single on Facebook. Yes it is lethal, quick and simple. Maybe a mature break-up is too much to ask for in the age of FB but do youngsters realise the aftermath of sleeping, eating and breathing in a virtual world? However, there is a silver lining. The group of teenagers from Boston who were educated about how not to break up on FB, were told to face it, don't Facebook it.

PEEK A BOO

Your ex's profile on Facebook is like the most exquisite chocolate lying right in front uneaten and unattended. It’s as addictive as chocolate too. Never mind the bad similie but isn’t it true that you’re always tempted to peek into your ex's life? A survey has revealed that 40 per cent of women between the ages of 18 and 54 use Facebook to track their exes. But its not just women — men too admit that they do not block their exes and like to peek into their profiles every now and then.

“Facebook is a great way to maintain a link with your former love interest,” explains Dr Gitanjali Sharma, marriage and family counsellor.

“Everyday we get cases wherein people have rekindled old flames and started an affair with an ex all over again,” she says.

Once, a seven-month pregnant woman met Sharma saying that her husband was having an affair with his much-married ex-girlfreind in Canada. “They had got in touch with each other on Facebook and everyday they chatted over the Internet once the woman was asleep,” says Sharma.

PICTURE IMPERFECT

WE have forgotten how nice it used to feel to flip through the pages of an old moth- eaten album. The digital era offers us hundreds of pictures at a click.

They can be instantly uploaded on to a virtual album on a social networking website without the hassles of developing a reel of film and waiting for a day to get, say, just 36 photos.

No wonder we now have our entire life chronicled on Facebook.

But there’s a darker side to these quick uploads. Dr Sharma tells us about a teenage girl whose boyfriend posted her objectionable pictures on Facebook. “ It is a common practice among jilted lovers. Their value system goes for a toss,” says Dr Sharma.

Then there is the ‘tag phenomena’. Before tagging pictures of your best friend with her boyfriend, do them a favour — ask them first.

And with so much happening, parents too are lurking on Facebook, if only to spy on their children.

ADDICTED TO FB

FACEBOOK boasts of 25 million users in India and the average time Indians spend on the website is three hours a month. It lets you be witty and cool through status messages.

It allows you to spy on profiles.

It gives you a huge database of zero- IQ games to choose from. But this hobby soon turns into an addiction. There are compulsive status message addicts, who post a status message every hour and invite 20 comments and 50 likes.

When they can’t think of a status message witty enough, they simply write about their lunch.

Then there are the photo addicts and the game addicts. There are some who scoot for quizzes on Facebook and have no qualms putting up the result on their walls, no matter how embarrassing. So the whole world comes to know what kind of a kisser he/ or she is or her friend is. This is definitely not healthy. Facebook is fun but don't let it rule your life. It is just a website.

Regardless of who we are, whatever our status in life, there is one thing that we all have in common: We are searching for happiness. Happiness means different things to different people. What makes one happy may not make another happy. Psychologists, however, define happiness as “a feeling of well-being, the pervasive sense that life is good.” David Myers, a leader in the field of happiness research defines it as “an ongoing perception that this time of one’s life, or even life as a whole, is fulfilling, meaningful and pleasant”.

Happiness is also closely related to satisfaction. If you are satisfied with your life, chances are that you are happy.

How you respond to situations in life will determine your level of happiness. There is much in life you cannot change, but your attitude towards these circumstances is in your control.

Here are four important determining factors that can help in keeping you happy:

1. Count your blessings. Do not compare your situation to others. This is easier said than done because the tendency to compare is so strong. Surveys have shown however, that “perceived wealth matters more than absolute wealth”. Your focus, then, should be on appreciating what you have rather than on what you don’t have.

2. Smile. Smile even when you don’t feel like it. In other words, “act as if”. In behavior modification, we asked people to act as if in order to change. You’re afraid of the dark? Act as if you’re not and go out in to the dark and see if you can survive. When you do and nothing horrible happens to you, your acting as if had has modified your behavior.

3. Stay connected to people. Don’t isolate yourself, especially when you feel down. Stay connected to people.

4. Keep busy. Do things that are meaningful to you. People who get into things they love to do perform better and feel satisfied and accomplished. And satisfaction is happiness. Psychologists refer to this state as flow. To be in flow is “to be unselfconsciously absorbed”. If you do things that you are good at, you will have more positive feelings that will contribute to heightened levels of happiness.

Have you ever seen a photo move? Artists develop amazing cinemagraphs that take 'stills' to the next level

It is, in their own words, ‘something more than a photo but less than a video’.

Two artists have created a new way to to record your special moments - pictures with movement.

The ‘cinemagraphs’ look like still photos but actually feature a subtle area of movement designed to grab your eye and keep you looking. The effect is slightly eerie - but utterly captivating.

Hair-raising: Cinemagraphs may look like stills, but they feature a subtle area of movement designed to grab your eye. These animated photos are the work of Jamie Beck (pictured) and her fellow artist Kevin Burg.

Turning a page: The cinemagraphs work by using GIFs, a type of picture format similar to a JPEG which has been around since the invention of home computers but has come into its own with broadband internet

In one shot of a crowded square, bodies are frozen in time, but one man quietly turns the pages of his newspaper.

Another photo of a restaurant terrace is brought to life by the reflection of a taxi going past in the window.

And a picture of photographer Jamie Beck, one of the two behind the project, leaps off the screen when her hair starts to blow in a breeze.

Miss Beck has worked with motion graphics artist Kevin Burg to make the cinemagraphs by using GIFs, a type of picture format similar to a JPEG which has been around since the invention of home computers.

Only now with broadband internet are they bringing it to life with a startling effect.

‘Our cinemagraphs are a way of adding motion to a still image,’ Miss Beck said.

In most cases she shoots the photos and Mr Burg adds on motion-graphics over several hours of painstaking editing.

New York-based Miss Beck told The Atlantic magazine: ‘There's something magical about a still photograph - a captured moment in time - that can simultaneously exist outside the fraction of a second the shutter captures.

‘We feel there are many exciting applications for this type of moving image.

‘There's movement in everything and by capturing that plus the great things about a still photograph you get to experience what a video has to offer without the time commitment a video requires.’

She added that sharing websites such as Tumblr have been essential for helping them publish their work and getting them an audience.

Women drive better than men.

Well this reverses a social myth – that women are bad drivers. Carnegie Mellon University researchers found after analyzing a lot of traffic data in 2007 that men are 77% more likely to die in a car accident than women, keeping the miles driven constant. So next time when your husband asks you to hand over the car keys, just give him this article.

Women remember appearances better than men.

Some would say, “Why not? Don’t women pay all their attention to appearances?” Well, say what you may, but only a loser complains about somebody for being better than him! Terrence Horgan, research fellow in psychology at Ohio State University, and her co-researchers found in a study that women are more accurate in describing appearances after seeing people once. The study was published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

Women cooperate better than men.

We can see this everywhere, but still if you want a citation, here it is. A study by Rolf Kuemmerli and other researchers at Edinburgh and Lausanne universities indicated that women cooperate better than men. In the research, based on games played by 100 Swiss students, women cooperated with others almost twice as much as men did.

Women eat better than men.

This is probably not so obvious, for rarely do we notice gender differences in eating habits. A survey involving 14000 Americans, conducted by University of Minnesota, revealed that men are more likely to eat frozen pizza and meat, whereas women are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables.

Women perform better than men in timed tests.

So if time is precious, women are better at preserving it than men. A study by Vanderbilt University researchers in 2006 found that women score better in timed intelligence tests than men. The study, published in the May-June issue of the journal Intelligence, didn’t find much difference in un-timed tests, which meant women had a quicker mind.

Women perceive their relationships better than men.

Talk about relationships and most men will frown. Now you know why – they know so little about their relationships! A Hebrew University of Jerusalem study, after surveying 97 couples in the United States, found that women are more perceptive than men in describing their relationships. The study, published in ScienceDaily, reported that women were much more accurate in describing the perception of their partners than men.

Women communicate better than men.

This is now scientifically proven and acknowledged. Louann Brizendine, neuro-psychiatrist at the University of California at San Francisco, found in a study that women can process 20000 words a day compared to men’s 7000 words (Louann Brizendine,The Female Brain, Morgan Road Books). This difference, as per Brizendine’s study, is more biological than social, which starts as early as the fetal stage.

Women learn better than men.

That is why girls get better grades in school on an average than boys in many parts of the world. Dr Simone Kruger of Edge Hill University, UK, found in her research based on remote learners that women learners were more successful in sharing ideas and experiences with each other, and hence learn t more efficiently than men.

Women invest better than men.

You don’t believe it, do you? We all know fewer women invest in stocks than men do, but the few women who invest in shares do better than their male counterparts. A study by the National Association of Investors Corporation (NAIC) for the University of California found that women earn on an average 1.4% more than men in their share portfolios.

Women cope with stress better than men.

A study at the University of California, Los Angeles, published in the July 2000 issue of Psychological Review, found some biological and behavioral differences in the ways men and women cope with stress. It found that women tend to seek contact with others and social support when they are under stress, which is a psychologically much better way of coping with stress than the “fight-or-flight” approach of men.
Of course, there are other studies which indicate men are better than women in various skills. The point I want to make is not that women are better than men in everything, but that men should stop underestimating women after being proven wrong time and again.

PUTTING LOVE INTO PRACTICE

The following story seen in "Sunshine Magazine" about a professor of psychology illustrates how difficult it is to love others.

Although he had no children of his own, whenever he saw a neighbor scolding a child for some wrongdoing, he would say, "You should love your boy, not punish him."

One hot summer afternoon the professor was doing some repair work on a concrete driveway leading to his garage. Tired out after several hours of work, he laid down the towel, wiped the perspiration from his forehead, and started toward the house. Just then out of the corner of his eye he saw a mischievous little boy putting his foot into the fresh cement. He rushed over, grabbed him, and was about to spank him severely when a neighbor leaned from a window and said, "Watch it, Professor! Don't you remember? You must 'love' the child!"

At this, he yelled back furiously, "I do love him in the abstract, but not in the concrete!"

That's so true. It's easy to love people "in the abstract". It's easy to talk about love and the importance of love. What's much more difficult is to love people in "concrete" ways, especially when we're dealing with people who are very unlovable, who have been unkind and irritating to us.

But love is not something for us to talk about -- it is something for us to demonstrate in some very practical ways, as John makes clear in this familiar passage:

"By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth." (1 John 3:16-18)

Don’t Lie

What we are talking about here is the concept of cricketers turning into actors. Given below is a list of those cricketers who have turned into actors as a follow-up to their successful / unsuccessful cricketing careers.

Salil Ankola

Following his not-so-successful run on the cricket field, Salil Ankola made his appearance in movies like 'Kurukshetra', 'Pitaah' and 'Chura Liya Hai Tumne'. He couldn't taste much success in Bollywood and later turned to the small screen with significant roles in various shows like 'Karam Apna Apna'

Vinod Kambli

Vinod Kambli shared a great rapport with Sachin Tendulkar and followed him into the Indian cricket team. He cricket journey was successful but short-lived with two double centuries and two centuries in seven tests. He stepped into Bollywood with the disastrous movie 'Annarth' in the year 2002 with Sanjay Dutt and Sunil Shetty as co-stars. He hasn't been seen in any other movie ever since.

Sunil Gavaskar

Considered as one of the most successful opening batsmen in test match history, Sunil Gavaskar was a major asset of the Indian team. Post his retirement, Gavaskar played the lead role in a Marathi film called Savli Premachi which did not receive much appreciation. He also made a guest-appearance in a Hindi movie called 'Maalamal' which starred Naseeruddin Shah.

Angad Bedi

Son of cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi, Angad was never able to match up to his father's success story as he could not be a part of the Indian team. He only played domestic cricket and played for Delhi. Soon enough, he turned towards modelling and hosting shows like 'Cook Na Kaho' and 'Emotional Atyachaar'. His actual big-screen debut come with the movie 'Faltu' which released this Friday.

Ajay Jadeja

He was a regular player for the Indian team and was quite successful in his outing before he was charged with match-fixing. The 5 year ban slapped on him overshadowed his achievements and he too came knocking on Bollywood's door. He made his debut with a movie caled 'Khel' alongside Celina Jaitley, Sunil Shetty and Sunny Deol. The film bombed at the box-office and Jadeja now fulfills his time as a cricket analyst and commentator.

Kapil Dev

The only Indian World Cup winning captain also had his fair share of movies to his credit. Though he appeared in many films, he never played a major role in any of them. He appeared as himself in movies like 'Stumped', 'Iqbal' and Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii' amongst others.

The man with 39 wives, 94 children and 33 grandchildren

Ziona Chana lives with all of them in a 100-room mansion. His wives take it in turns to share his bed. It takes 30 whole chickens just to make dinner.
He is head of the world's biggest family - and says he is 'blessed' to have his 39 wives.
Ziona Chana also has 94 children, 14-daughters-in-law and 33 grandchildren.
They live in a 100-room, four storey house set amidst the hills of Baktwang village in the Indian state of Mizoram, where the wives sleep in giant communal dormitories.

Mr Chana told the Sun: 'Today I feel like God's special child. He's given me so many people to look after.
'I consider myself a lucky man to be the husband of 39 women and head of the world's largest family.'
The family is organised with almost military discipline, with the oldest wife Zathiangi organising her fellow partners to perform household chores such as cleaning, washing and preparing meals.
One evening meal can see them pluck 30 chickens, peel 132lb of potatoes and boil up to 220lb of rice.

Coincidentally, Mr Chana is also head of a sect that allows members to take as many wives as he wants.

Feeling peckish? The senior ladies of the Chana family show what it takes just to make a meal.

He even married ten women in one year, when he was at his most prolific, and enjoys his own double bed while his wives have to make do with communal dormitories.
He keeps the youngest women near to his bedroom with the older members of the family sleeping further away - and there is a rotation system for who visits Mr Chana's bedroom.
Rinkmini, one of Mr Chana's wives who is 35 years old, said: 'We stay around him as he is the most important person in the house. He is the most handsome person in the village.
She says Mr Chana noticed her on a morning walk in the village 18 years ago and wrote her a letter asking for her hand in marriage.

Another of his wives, Huntharnghanki, said the entire family gets along well.The family system is reportedly based on 'mutual love and respect.'
And Mr Chana, whose religious sect has 40,000 members, says he has not stopped looking for new wives. 'To expand my sect, I am willing to go even to the U.S. To marry,' he said.
One of his sons insisted that Mr Chana, whose grandfather also had many wives, marries the poor women from the village so he can look after them.
