120 years of visual arts documentation in Ireland from the National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL) at NCAD. The National Irish Visual Arts Library is a public research resource dedicated to the collection of information on 20th century and contemporary Irish visual art and design.

DOCUMENT! comprises selected Irish arts documentation from the library collection at NIVAL, from 1890 to the present day. A time-line of examples from each decade represents the physical and intellectual content of the library's collections, including printed ephemera, books and journals, exhibition catalogues, archives, special collections and digital material. NIVAL’s collection policy includes Irish visual art from the whole island as well as Irish art abroad and foreign artists working in Ireland.

The exhibition includes contemporary and historic collections such as the Artists and Galleries Files Collections, Illustrated Books, Posters, the Artists Books Collection, the College Student Registers (1877-1970s), the Earley and Company Archives (1852-1974), the Friends of the National Collections (1924-present), the Mainie Jellett Collection, the Irish Exhibition of Living Art (1947-1971), the Rosc ’71 Collection, and the Graphic Studio Dublin Archive (1960-present).

A new website, www.nival.ie, has been launched to mark NIVAL's 15th anniversary. A number of programmed public events coincide with DOCUMENT!. NIVAL is a partnership initiative of NCAD and the Arts Council. Supported by the Heritage Council, Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

The first definitive results of the 2011 census, undertaken just less than a year ago on 10th April 2011, were released today and show that Ireland’s population has continued to grow strongly since 2006, increasing by 348,404 to 4,588,252, and that the total number of non-Irish nationals has increased by 124,624 persons or 29.7 per cent from 419,733 to 544,357.

Mountjoy Square Library ebooks collection

The Library has recently acquired access to a number of ebooks. As the name suggests, ebooks are an online version of a particular text.

Unlike the hard copy version of a book which at a given time can be unavailable as all it's copies are on loan, an ebook is always available to view online.

Opening Hours extended at Mountjoy Square Library

From Monday 5th of March Mountjoy Square Library will be returning to the previously operating term time opening hours.

They are:
Mon-Thurs: 9.30am to 9.30pm
Friday: 9.30am to 5.15pm
Saturday: 10.00am to 5.00pm (check here for Saturday opening schedule)

The main change is that the Library will be back open on Monday evenings.

New Opening Hours at Mountjoy Square Library

Due to staffing changes, Mountjoy Square library has had to revise term-time opening hours.

From Monday 30th January 2012, the library's opening hours will be as follows:

Mon: 9.30am - 5:15pm. (i.e. no Monday evening opening)

Tues - Thurs: 9.30am - 9.30pm

Fri: 9.30am - 5.15pm.

Saturday: 10.00am - 5.15pm (no Saturday opening on 25th February, 17th March or 7th April)

The shortest way is to click this link and pick your course from those listed. To save time in future bookmark that page.

To access that page from the website itself, go to the Mountjoy Square Library webpage and select "Exam Papers" in the services section of the page.

Or else from the Library web OPAC (also known as the Library catalogue), select Exam Papers from the options list, then click on "Quick Link to Recent Exam Papers" and select the 4th option "College of Arts and Tourism, Mountjoy Square : examination papers".

Alternatively from the Mountjoy Square Library webpage, selecting from one of the resource bars at the end of the page will bring you to that subject gateway page. Selecting the link for "Exam Papers" on the subject gateway page will then give you a tailored list of the exam papers in that subject area only.

The papers are arranged in order of the exam period when the paper was originally sat, so bear in mind that some subjects may have been moved around between the Semester One or Summer Exam periods in different years. Also bear in mind that there may be some relevent papers also in the supplemental exam period.

Pay attention to the guidance on accessing these papers from OUTSIDE the DIT network as well as to any other advice listed on the exam papers pages.

Recent Child Protection Books and Reports in Mountjoy Square Library

Students of Social Care, Early Childhood Education and Child Family and Community Studies may be interested in the following child protection texts and reports which were added to Mountjoy Square Library's collection in the last three years.

Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children, 2011 (Call No.: 362.709415). This document sets out what organisations need to do to keep children safe and what different bodies and the general public should do if they are concerned about a child's safety and welfare.

Fourth Report of the Special Rapporteur on Child Protection: a report submitted to the Oireachtas, 2010. (Call No.: 361.9417). In this report Geoffrey Shannon, the Government's Special Rapporteur on Child Protection reports to the Oireachtas on the position of the law and social care practice in relation to youth homelessness, the right of children with mental difficulties to be heard and children and the criminal law. He also reviews developments in law and practice since his previous reports in 2007 and 2008 relating to trafficking of children and prostitution.

Report into the Catholic Archdiocese of Cloyne, December 2010 (Call No: 362.7609415). This report, by a Commission of Investigation chaired by Judge Yvonne Murphy reports on the handling by Cloyne diocesan, and Church and State authorities of complaints, allegations, concerns and suspicions of child sexual abuse by clerics made between 1 January 1996 - 1 February 2009.

World Perspectives on Child Abuse, 2010 (Call No. 362.76) is the ninth edition of a publication by the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect and focuses on the variability in how child abuse is defined and addressed worldwide and the challenges of collecting child maltreatment data.

Roscommon Child Care Case: Report of the Inquiry Team to the HSE on 27th October 2010 by the Roscommon Child Care Inquiry (chaired by Nora Gibbons), 2010 (Call No.: 362.76094175) is the report on the response of social services to parental incest, neglect and ill-treatment of a family of six children in the Roscommon area.

Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse: Report, 2009 ("The Ryan Report") (Call No. 362.7609417). This five volume report documents incidents of child abuse in institutions managed by the state between 1940 and 1999. An Executive Summary of the report is also available at the call number mentioned above.

Child Abuse and Neglect by Monica L. McCoy, 2009 (Call No.: 362.76) This text addresses the history of the response to child abuse in the US, risk factors in child abuse, mandated reporting, details of types of child abuse, legal issues around child abuse, what happens after a report of child abuse is made and prevention of child maltreatment.

Mandated Report of Child Abuse and Neglect: A Practical Guide for Social Workers, 2009 by Kenneth J. Lau, Kathryn Krase and Richard H. Morse (Call No.: 362.76630973) This text addresses the role of the social worker as a mandatory reporter of child abuse and neglect in a U.S. context. It defines child abuse and neglect; examines when a report is required; how to make a report; what happens after a report is made; legal and ethical issues in mandated reporting; legal protections for mandated reporters and the role of law enforcement in protecting children.

Monageer Inquiry: Report presented to Ms Mary Harney T.D. Minister for Health and Children, 2008 (Call No.: 362.8209415). This report examines the circumstances leading to and surrounding the deaths of the Dunne family members - two adults and two children aged four and three years - in Monageer, Co. Wexford.

Report on the Management of Two Child Protection Cases in the Diocese of Cloyne, 2008 by Ian Elliott (Call No.: 362.7094195). This report presents the findings of a review of two child protection cases which arose in the Diocese of Cloyne, addressing the adequacy and appropriacy of the Diocese's response to reports that came to it about child protection concerns involving the clergy and makes recommendations for reform of its child protection policy and procedures.

Child Abuse and Culture: Working with Diverse Families (2008) by Lisa Aronson Fontes, 2008 (Call No.: 362.7653). This text examines the ways in which culture is relevant to child abuse intervention. If offers practical advice on interviewing diverse families about, and assessing such families for child maltreatment. It also addresses the issues of physical discipline and abuse, child sexual abuse, working with interpreters in child maltreatment cases and child maltreatment prevention and parent education.

International Art Exhibiton takes place in Dublin

DIT Library app launched

The Library has subscribed to a service that gives us an app to provide some library services on a mobile phone. People can search the Library catalogue, ejournals, Arrow and access the Library website.

Wellbeing and Care of Older People – Some of Mountjoy Square Library’s Information Sources

Mountjoy Square Library houses a number of reports which will be of interested to students wishing to keep in touch with recent developments in the care of older people. The most recent of these, entitled "A Total Indifference to our Dignity" (2011) by Marita O'Brien et al. (Call No. 362.6), illustrates older people's understanding of elder abuse and addresses some effective means of tackling it.

Another relevant report is "Protecting Our Future: Report of the Working Group on Elder Abuse." (2002) (Call No. 362.6). This is a foundation document that recommends official steps that should be taken when elder abuse is suspected.

The Health Service Executive's report "Elder Abuse Service Developments 2008" (Call No. 362.609417) outlines initiatives taken by the HSE to tackle elder abuse up to 2008.

Given recent newspaper reports of difficulties older people have experienced in accessing nursing home care under the Nursing Home Subvention Scheme, another report of topical interest is the "Review of the Nursing Home Subvention Scheme" by Eamonn O'Shea (Call No. 362.16). Originally published in 2002, it offers useful insights into the operation of the scheme and makes recommendations for improvement which have a very relevant current resonance.

Then there are the "National Quality Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland" (2009) set by the Health Information and Quality Authority which provide a useful source of information on the rights of older people in care environments.

The report "Implementation of the Home Care Package Scheme, Report No. 38." (2009) prepared by the National Economic and Social Forum (Call No. 362.6) assesses the efficacy of the delivery of the present Home Care Package Scheme and makes recommendation for future Home Care Package Policy.

Another report of relevance in this context is "The Role and Future of the Meals on Wheels Service for Older People in Ireland" (2008) by Ciara O'Dwyer and Virpi Timonen (Call No. 362.609417).

Finally a report that deals with the broader field of older people's equal participation in society - The report "Implementing Equality for Older People" (2002) produced by the Equality Authority (Call No. 301.435) addresses the current legal status of older people, equal access to employment for older people, the income of older people and their access to health and community services and education.

Minister Jimmy Deenihan, TD opens Ireland's exhibition at the Venice Biennale

Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan T.D., is in Venice today to open the Irish exhibition at the 54th International Art Exhibition, la Biennale di Venezia, the most important visual arts showcase in the world.

Ireland is represented in Venice by the artist Corban Walker, working with commissioner Emily-Jane Kirwan and curator Eamonn Maxwell.
