We like the Operations Pending window, which collects all selected procedures, awaiting your Apply or Undo command. Another nice touch is a Wizard file menu for quickly accessing the program's wizard-based copy and recovery tools. We clicked Format Partition to reformat our flash drive's FAT partition as NTFS, and then clicked Apply to initiate the change, which called up a caution message about open applications. Clicking Surface Test called up a dialog with the familiar animated block map display, whereas the Wipe Partition control offers several levels of disk-wiping. Simple commands like labeling partitions or changing drive letters are handled by small pop-ups, and more-powerful tools, like Copy Partition, offer much greater levels of detail and control. You can also download a free bootable, burnable CD ISO image that lets you boot into Partition Wizard to manage partitions without limitations, including functions like merging partitions and rebuilding Master Boot Records.

Partition Wizard Home Edition is a great example of the sort of freeware that can both simplify and enhance Windows' capabilities. It's an all-in-one disk partition manager that earns our top recommendation.

This program scans start-up applications to differentiate the necessary programs from any potential spyware threats. We found its user interface awkward to read and its results mostly inconclusive.

Startup Inspector for Windows features cartoonish icons, and the overuse of colors makes it hard on the eyes. The interface can be resized to full screen, and you can resize the information columns, but we still had problems with the Comments section getting cut off. A tree menu gives you the option of displaying all of your start-up programs or drilling down to only reveal specific Registry folders. The few command buttons offered were vague but, on a hunch, we clicked the Consult button hoping it would start the scan process and that turned out to be the right guess. The program very quickly scanned and produced results for each of our start-up programs; however, most of the scan results came up inconclusive. The program could not produce any viable information regarding most of the start-up programs' spyware threat status. For a few programs, Startup Inspector for Windows was able to tell us what, exactly, those programs did, the memory used, and whether they were necessary. The Apply button seems to serve no purpose. We were able to deselect a start-up program simply by unchecking the box, so there was nothing to apply.

The program contains links to the publisher's Web site, and a so-called information guide, but we were unable to find any real help there. We recommend you keep looking for a more effective and user-friendly start-up manager

True to its name, FilterGate Free PopupFilter won't cost you a dime, but that's the most positive thing we have to say about it. The interface is bland, but we do appreciate that the app can minimize to your system tray for quick access. This program offers most essential features for its class but doesn't provide you with anything special. You can choose to allow pop-ups by adding sites to a whitelist and specifying what types of ads to block. The log provides you with a list of quashed ads, but the app doesn't flash or emit a sound when doing its job.
