Thanks China. China has never been high on human rights issues so really, why would I think that animals would even stand a chance? Before we get to whats happening with your hard earned cosmetic dollars. Let's look at how the Chinese treat <em>women,</em> then we'll get to the treatment of animals and how, unknowingly, your cosmetic choices are supporting this behavior.</p> <p class="p2"><strong>1. Wife Abuse is a "family matter."</strong> You think? Thanks genius. I thought that was implied with the term "wife." Once you add the word "beatings" I would imagine a third party would step in. However, I'm only a woman so what do I know?</p> <p class="p1">In some parts of China, it is acceptable to beat your wife. If you want to leave? Well, good luck with that, there are zero shelters to go to.</p> <p class="p2"><strong>2. Abduction and Trafficking of Women.</strong> Buy one and get a marriage license. Yes! Win, Win! Men that can provide a marriage license do not get prosecuted for abuse because, duh, they're your owner.</p> <p class="p2"><strong>3. Have a baby girl? Poor you.</strong> China's practice allows urban dwellers one child. Guess how high a baby girl ranks? Yup, forget abortion. Just get rid of it. Even after it is born. The more industrious Chinese couple can make a quick buck. The going rate to foreigners for a Chinese baby girl? Less than a Chanel bag. If you have $3,000 you can have one.</p> <p class="p2">I'm not hating on the residents. I'm hating on the government. I'm also thanking my lucky stars I was born in America. Knowing that they have such high regard for human life is, it any wonder there is zero regard for animal life? Suspend your disbelief, the cruelty that China shows animals is jaw dropping. So jaw dropping that no self respecting American company would tolerate it. No established, money making conglomerate, would knowingly be a part of this culture. A mentality where women's rights are questionable and animals are abused. Once you hop out of the shower your skin will be refereshed and moisturized, not to mention smooth. It leaves my legs baby skin soft. The downside? You may have to hide it. I've had it in my shower and everytime I pick up the jar there is a lot less in there then I've last remembered. It seems as though I'm not the only fan in my house. We've gotten really lucky and he eats around 10 pm, then 2 am and then 5:30 am which is when my husband gets up for work so we've been trading off. That means that just about every other night, we're getting decent sleep!</p> <p class="p1">I was also happy to see that no one criticized me for bringing make up to the hospital. There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to look and feel like yourself after such a huge, life changing, amazing event! It was more about feeling like 'me' again than trying to impress anyone. I mean come on, I popped a kid out in less than 5 hours, that's impressive enough! :)</p> <p class="p1">I can't say I've worn make up consistently in the last two weeks though...caring for a newborn (even a good one like we have) is a lot more time consuming than you think. Somedays it's lunch and I'm starving and I can't figure out what I've done for 3 hours! But the baby is clean, fed and happy so that's all that matters. I've started venturing out a bit: grocery stores, Babies R Us, drugstores, etc, so I've made an effort to try and shower each day, even if I don't wash and dry my hair.</p> <p class="p1">Quick products are essential now; as much as Wesley loves hearing the water of the shower, I can't let the poor kid nap on the bathroom floor all morning! Most things have become more complicated and time-consuming as well as more prone to drama than I would have ever believed! Now I am not saying I would be ready or able to give up things that make my life basically livable. I will say that fewer choices and things that work for me have become my goal: think of it as editing it all down to what matters, what is possible, and what you enjoy and then amplify and dream big from there! One perfect designer or custom-tailored dress works well because you <em>KNOW</em> you'll look and feel amazing in a pinch every time you put it on…then you might consider adding another in a different color and so on until you have created the closet (and if you're lucky!) and life-style of one's dreams! No more throw-away clothing you end up spending more on that fits you terribly and there is much to be said for <em>"keeping it simple"</em> but it's NOT always that easy to do! </p> <p class="p2">I have a long way to go but what I'm not doing anymore is adhering to my notion that <em>"more expensive must be better"</em> because lately I've noticed that prices are soaring while quality and content are diminishing! I'll tell on myself and admit that recently I spent a ton of cash on an extremely "exclusive" skin care line: the packaging was glass and elegant, the products were extremely pure and "endorsed/used" by a woman who is basically flawless, and because my skin fights me daily, I wanted to see if a line of this renowned quality would truly make a difference. It did not.</p> <p class="p1">Lovely to use, I felt fancy applying, but other than a bit of reduction in dryness, my skin really didn't achieve that gilded-glow I had hoped for! </p> <p class="p2">I am continuing to sample skin care products that are "pure": if you know me "natural" isn't a notion I hold onto to for the most part. Some things can be improved upon in many cases but pure in the sense that chemicals and nasty ingredients are not involved or minimized and that what's inside contains ingredients that will WORK even if they're not expensive! I'm not pregnant anymore! YAY!!!! Hopefully those of you that read this site missed me last week and hoped I was in labor. If you did, thanks! I appreciate the labor thoughts, they must have worked! My son Wesley was born at 4:42 pm on Tuesday, April 24. He was 8 lbs, 8 oz, 20.5 inches long and just perfect.</p> <p class="p1">Somehow, while I hate being pregnant and am not very good at it (I do not glow, or happily rub my belly with stars in my eyes, or bask in the glory of the miracle of life, I just count the days until it's over in the best mood I can muster), I am a champion birther. I popped that baby out in 5 hours. Pushed for 10 minutes. Seriously. First contraction was around 11:45 am, he was born at 4:42 that afternoon. No 36 hour labor nightmares, or vaccuums and medical intervention, or relaxing meditation, just give me the epidural and get ready to catch.Now we all know that birth is beautiful and special and miraculous and all that...in theory. In practice, it's pretty gross. There's stuff coming out that you don't want to see or talk about, nothing is pretty or glamorous, and your lady parts are on display for just about anyone who wants to walk in. It's very humbling and shame goes completely out the window.</p> <p class="p1">However, once it's over, there's nothing wrong with wanting to look your best for pictures with your new bundle of joy. I brought makeup to the hospital and I'm not afraid to tell anyone that. Did I do a full out 'heading to the hottest bar' in town face? No, of course not. That would be excessive. But I did cover up the dark circles under my eyes, even out my skin tone and brush on a little bronzer for some pictures with my new little man.</p> <p class="p1">Here are a few products that I've reviewed in the past that were good enough to make it into the hospital bag. Maybelline's Baby Lips</strong></a> lip conditioner. This was perfect to hydrate my lips during labor when I couldn't eat or drink anything. I drink water constantly so not being able to really have too much aside from some sips here and there was rough and I felt parched. This was great and kept my lips soft and moist through the toughest of contractions.</p> <p class="p1"><a href="http://www.megsmakeup.com/2012/04/18/got-2bs-fat-tastic-fresh-and-full-dry-shampoo%20"><strong>2.Got 2Bs Fat-Tastic Fresh and Full Dry Shampoo</strong>.</a> Showering and drying my very thick hair in a hospital when I'm sore and tired and a bit torn up is not something I had the energy or pain tolerance to do each day. On Day 2 when visitors where on their way, I used this to freshen my hair up enough to get it off my face and have it look somewhat presentable. Labor is tough so I wouldn't say my hair was as good as if it was freshly washed, but it was clean enough to not look shiny in pictures.</p> <p class="p1"><a href="http://www.megsmakeup.com/2012/01/04/maybelline-eye-studio-color-explosion-luminous-eye-shadow-caffeine-rush"><strong>3. Maybelline's Eye Studio Color Explosion Luminous Eye Shadow.</strong></a> I brought this specifically for the perfect neutral colors that go on easily, aren't that dark, don't crease or run and give me that perfect 'I look like I'm not wearing make up but I am a little' look. Like I said, I wasn't painting the town red, I just wanted to be able to look back at pictures of this amazing time and not wonder why I looked like I may have actually died during labor.</p> <p class="p1"><strong><a href="http://www.megsmakeup.com/%20http%3A/%252Fwww.megsmakeup.com/2011/12/08/sebamed-hand-and-nail-balm%20">4. Sebamed Hand and Nail balm.</a> </strong>Child birth and gestating do weird things to your skin. Hormones are awesome, really. I found that within a day or two of having my son, my skin was...off...Not sure how to explain it, other than it was a bit dry and itchy, and very sensitive. This lotion was great because it helps restore natural pH balances in your skin. How's that for an opening? Some people are always<em> "working for the weekend." </em>I love those people. I fall under the category of <em>"still working...AND it's the weekend."</em> Full steam ahead! Ha! As if, I've been on half empty but my schedule doesn't seem to care. I've built up this terrible habit, much worse than any drug, maybe you've heard of it? It's society's new killer, this crazy thing called<em> "lifestyle." I'm a lot of things, never been accused of being short on style.</em></p> <p> </p> <p><em>"I'll get enough sleep when I'm dead." </em>That's such an endearing quote. How did that come out of someone's mouth and the recipient of such wisdom did not take that as a suicide warning is something I'll never know... Except I do, they probably heard it, faked a polite laugh...And then had to get on a conference call. <em>"Make sure Sally doesn't hang herself," </em>went on the checklist, unfortunately, it was during monthly budget meetings. So, in all things, there's a trade-off.</p> <p>I'm very lucky. I got married and divorced (but after a decade, so I sort of know what I'm talking about.) I know the grass is no greener. My issue? Why isn't the movie called <em>"Think Like A WOMAN."</em> Take that to<strong> NUMBER 1.</strong> Here's the top reasons why...</p> <p><strong>1. We live longer. </strong>You tell me that you're going to learn all this useless bullshit and he's just going to die? Take up bridge. It's more handy. Among the world's population 85% of women over 100 years old are women.</p> <p><strong>2. We're Better Bosses. </strong>Women are better at listening, better at "connecting" and better at inspiring people to create change. So, can we please direct this towards World Peace (which we can solve) instead of being caught in the "toilet seat" argument.</p> <p><strong>3. I Could write "We Invest Better" which we do, but how about "We Foster Life?" </strong>I mean, that's a strong point. That whole "future of humanity angle."</p> <p>I could write 10 pages on this, but I will not. Still. It's been like 14 months or something. My official due date is Monday, but according to the doctor it could happen anytime. My son was 5 days early so I'm hoping this little one comes right around the same time as his big brother. That would be today, so if you could all do me a favor and think labor thoughts as you are reading this, it would really help me out.</div> <div> </div> <div>I've had some bone, joint and nerve issues in my lower back this time so my doctor pulled me from work a few weeks ago to avoid early labor due to stress. I've been relaxing at home (as much as a beached whale can relax) and doing approved activities here and there. Mostly I'm just watching bad TV and trying to bribe this kid out. While showering and doing light activities are approved, they do take a lot of energy, especially since on a good day, my hair takes about 25 minutes to blow dry. That's a long time for me to be standing. Since I can't really go too many places I'm not overly concerned with a perfect blow out every day, but I've been aiming for every other day. My hair is REALLY thick, so air-drying is a joke (we're talking hours here) and wet buns or pony tails give me headaches thanks to the weight of all my hair. So every other day, I dry my hair. Then I take a nap. I can use this and my hair is light, fluffy, easy to manage and smells good.</div> <div> </div> <div>I don't have to use a ton, just my roots on the crown of my head, the back and underneath layers don't need anything. I blast a few sprays on my roots while lifting sections of my hair with my fingers. Then I run a brush through it as I blow dry for a few seconds and I'm like new. Napoleon Perdis was all about reds for this fall, he was as he always is, completely on target and trend. It may help to be completely on target and trend when you're the one that creates them...Back to my point. I wish I was able to exude such prescence. It's like having Harvard on your resume for the beauty world. Unlike other schools, Perdis has created an experience that takes students through the steps, A-Z. Let's Start with "A" shall we? A for Ambience. The school space is over 9,000 feet on Hollywood Boulevard. It's steps away from where they host this little event called "The Oscars." So no big deal. </p> <p>Napoleon painstakingly created a work space where his studios not only have top notch materials (computer library, tons of beauty literature and amazing work stations complete with their extremely successful teachers.) He went a step further. Instead of having students searching for cool locations, Napoleon built a studio inside the Academy. At the turn of a key, his school space not only turns into a professional shooting studio but also a fabulous event space.
