Hornby St. Bike lane…what’s the business case?

The COV is facing some stiff opposition to their plans of creating the Hornby bike lane. Much of this opposition is coming from business owners who are fearful that the reduced car traffic and car parking will cause a drop in patronage.

Biketarian would like to direct the COV and opposers of the bike lane to a Toronto study conducted by Fred Stabinksy for the Clean Air Partnership. This study took a look at percpetions and reality surrounding the business impacts of increased cycling and pedestrian traffic in the Bloor St. corridor.

We by no means are advocating for a similar study to be conducted in Vancouver for the Hornby lane, as these business cases take time and money to assemble, however, there are some things that can be learned from the Bloor St. case that could be applicable to Hornby.

Jen and I are in the process of developing a kind of “Thank You” campaign to encourage City planners to keep up the good work on improving cycling infrastructure in Vancouver, especially within the downtown core.

The campaign is intended to have the following effects:

1) Encourage further cycling infrastructure development by demonstrating that a need is being satisfied

2) Increase awareness surrounding the on-going initiatives aimed at improving cycling infrastructure

3) Serve as vehicle for gathering anecdotal evidence about the effects of improved cycling infrastructure in support of future initiatives

4) Generate dialogue around cycling issues in Vancouver

5) Convince business owners, car-drivers and pedestrians that investments in cycling create more livable cities, benefitting everyone in the end.
