1. Monitor each hour of your day

It’s important that you monitor each hour of your day. Not only should you monitor them, you should record them. I use the app called Toggl. This is an awesome app because it allows me to track my time spent on different projects and tasks. I currently use their free version, but their paid version offers a ton of upgrades. I’m very cautious about what I spend my time on. Once a week Toggl sends me a report on my hours worked and I’m able to get a better view of what is taking up most of my time and where I need to be more productive at.

2. Break your day down into manageable time chunks. 

When planning my day, I normally schedule everything in 15 minutes, 30 minutes, and 1-hour blocks. This helps me remain on task and to know what needs to be accomplished. For example, from 9:00 am to 9:15 am each morning, which is 15 minutes, I check my emails. Realistically, Mondays I can easily spend a full 15 minutes checking emails if not more just because I’m catching up on emails I got over the weekend that I didn’t respond too. Tuesday through Friday I honestly never go over 10 minutes. This includes checking all emails, responding and reading important articles. I then repeat this same 15-minute block activity at 3:00 pm later in the day. Another example is when it’s time for me to write. I block off one hour off time and focus on writing solely.

3. Limit your email usage to 1-hour max per day

As I mentioned in step number 2, limit your email access to 1-hour max per day. You can easily find yourself in your inbox aimlessly wondering around. One trick I used is to cut off all notifications for email. It’s pointless to keep jumping in your inbox every second on to not see a new email. It’s not efficient. Consistently checking emails can slow your production down in a major way.

4. Plan your week the week before

I know you’ve heard of the phrase “Plan your night before” but I want to encourage you to take it a step further and plan your week ahead of time. Normally on Sunday night’s, I’m able to plan out my entire following week. This helps out tremendously because I’m not as unsure about what is going to happen on what day. Sure, things tend to get mixed up and moved around but I have a solid guideline for the week as to what needs to happen.

5. Delegate unnecessary task

Lastly, you need to delegate those unnecessary tasks. These are things that most people would do for $10/hr. Things such as emails, customer service calls, social media engagement, etc… Things that take you away from your core skills. A perfect example would be if you’re writing a book and you are a great writer but horrible book cover designer. It would make sense for you to be to designing when you could simply hire someone from http://www.fiverr.com to create that for you. Takes them an hour or so versus it taking you two months.

The goal of this blog is to get you utilizing each hour and minute of your day. To be productive this is what it’s going to take. If you have suggestions or comments please feel free to drop them below. We would love to hear from you.

1. Sell items around your house on eBay, Craigslist or Amazon 

You’ve probably spent money on some items that are now just sitting around your house collecting dust. Shoes, videos games, toys, junk, etc…. These things may have no monetary value to you, but in reality, someone else is willing to pay a few bucks for those items. The great thing about this is that it doesn’t cost any money. For example, let’s say you had a PS3 you wanted to get rid of for some quick cash. You just post a free ad on Craigslist and wait for someone to come pick it up. They pay you cash and you don’t come out of pocket. Or, let’s say you posted it on eBay, the only thing you’d have to pay for is shipping, but of course, you can ask the buyer to pay that or you can let the profits pay for it. If you somehow develop a knack for this kind of thing, you should check out some local storage facilities and see when they have storage units up for bids.

2. Offer to walk or watch your neighbor’s dog

This may seem easy and that’s because it is. Offering to walk a neighbor’s dog or even dog sitting is something you can do. People have to work and their dogs have to pee during the day time. This is called offering a service. If you have a certain set of skills, then you can make money. Someone needs your services. When I was in high school, I took an auto mechanics class. Yup, you guessed right. Just a few classes in, I was offering to do oil changes, breaks, and other small maintenance items for my family and friends at a cost. I saved them a fortune by not having to go to a shop, and I made a little pocket changed. I charged anywhere from $30 – $40 for a break job which took me no more than 40 mins to do. You could charge $15 to walk a dog, and if you walked 10 – 15 dogs per week…. You can do the math.

3. Go the digital route

What I’m getting at is that there is no limit to how much money you could make given your talents. You can offer a service or sell something.

1. Keep your Environments Temperature at 68 Degrees

For the best sleeping results, keep your room or environment at a cool temperature. Not too cold, and not too hot. 68 degrees is normally the sweet spot. When the temperature starts to increase in my home, I normally can feel it and will start to toss and turn. This gets me out of my sleep element and I find it hard to get back comfortable. The same happens when it get’s just a little chilly. I find myself tossing and turning trying to locate a warm spot in my bed. On those nights that the temperature is just right, I have no problems. So for a good nights sleep, monitor the temperature in your home. You can also set your thermostat to automatically go down to 68 degrees maybe 30 minutes to an hour before your bedtime. This will also get you in the habit of knowing when bed time is.

2. Monitor what you eat close to bedtime

This is a big thing to watch right before bed. If you’ve eaten a full meal close to bedtime before, then you know the feeling you have after waking up the next morning. You feel groggy and don’t want to be bothered. You end up even more hungry the next morning than you were the night before. My suggestion would be if you are going to miss dinner, try eating two are three smaller snacks hours before bedtime. Foods such as almonds, carrots, peanuts, or other foods that aren’t as heavy on your stomach. These foods won’t take much energy to be broken down such as a plate of chicken or meat loaf. What happens when you are sleeping on a heavy stomach is your body begins working to break these foods down. It could be 2 to 3 hours before your body finishes. Now you won’t notice this much because you’re sleeping but your physical body knows.

3. Find something relaxing

In order to prepare, you must get into your comfort zone. Meaning you need to find something that triggers that relaxation time. I normally will pour me half a cup of decaffeinated tea and get a book to read, followed by jotting down all of my tasks that I need to complete the following day. Because I know these are the last things I need to do before bed, I can easily switch from reading to shutting everything down and closing my eyes. To be honest, I get excited after I read that last page and know the next thing I get to do is sleep. If you’re looking for a really good read, check out “The Four Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferris

4. Stay on routine (Plan your day)

It is critical that you create a nightly routine and try to stick as close to it as you can. When you find that pattern, your internal clock will know when it’s time to start shutting down body parts. I find myself sometimes getting out of routine and it hurts me in the morning time. There have been times I just come and crash, then I wake up in the am feeling horrible. Sticking to the routine is very helpful.

5. Avoid the caffeine

Lastly, I would avoid caffeine late night or anytime after 1:00 pm. It takes roughly 14 hours for caffeine to exit the body and with so much energy going on, it will be hard for your body to find the resting period. So being that I’ve experienced all of the above, I encourage you to start finding a routine to stick with and go to bed when it’s time. Don’t fight it. You can literally survive off of 4 hours of sleep, but you have to sleep like you’re supposed too.

Finding free space to work is not difficult, but finding a free quiet, professional space to work can be. Here are three tips to find the space you need:

1. Try to find a free co-working space. Often these space are built around a tech or maker community, and they offer some quiet space to work around others. There are also more premium offerings like inexpensive office space, a mailing address, conference rooms and more. This can be as easy as googling “free co-working space” and your zip code.
2. Look for pop-up co-working. Meetup.com and other sites will provide access to pop-up co-working, at different locations and times. This is usually sponsored by a venue that would enjoy more foot traffic, or a for-profit co-working space.
3. Starbucks, McDonalds, the Library. Not everyone is lucky enough to live in an area that has safe, free co-working space. Less luxurious but still very workable alternatives are your local library, which may even allow you to use a conference room (if you need to, for instance, record a podcast like TriangleCast). If all else fails, your local fast food restaurant likely has a Wi-Fi signal that you can use for the price of a cup of coffee (delicious, life giving coffee).

1. Plan your day the night before:

It may sound simple and maybe even mediocre, but it is the easiest and most productive way to have an effective work day. Carving out 30 minutes to 1 hour the night before can really boost your productivity. Things won’t always go the way you plan, but to have direction will keep you on track. Once the kids are sleep and the spouse in tucked away, this is the time for you to reflect.

• Writing out all your goals and tasks the night before is critical. Normally between 9pm – 10pm is when I start planning out my following day. I split up my task into Personal Task, Employee Task for my job, and Business Tasks for my Side Business. People who say they don’t have enough time in the day are people who don’t plan. It’s true that you can run out of hours, but if you know how to delegate some tasks, you can get so much more done. Check out Laura Vanderkam’s Book “168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think”. This book literally changed my perception on time and how I’m really supposed to be using it.
  
• Spend 10 to 15 minutes meditating or dreaming about what it is that you really want to accomplish the next day. Clear your mind before you go to bed so that you’re not worrying. I find it very hard to get a good nights sleep when I have a lot on my mind. One trick I use if I find myself not able to let go of all my thoughts is to write them down on a piece of paper and just let it flow.

2. Exercise early in the morning:

Get the juices flowing. I’ve never had a bad day after working out early in the morning.  If you’ve never exercised before going to work, I’m mandating that you do it tomorrow morning when you get up. My morning normally starts with a bottle of water and a morning jog or trip to the gym.

My tips to help. Plan 1 hour early in the morning to workout. Preferably at 6:00am or earlier. Not many people are up at this time to bother you and you can get a peaceful workout in. Also, to be up before everyone gives you a competitive advantage. Keep a water bottle near your bed along with your workout clothes, so it’s not a hassle to find things you need when you wake up in the morning. Get the juices flowing and no one can ruin your day. I sure you can relate to those chaotic mornings where you wake up just in time to be late for work. Those mornings are no fun.

3. Say NO:

Say no to the non-productive task. When you’re in the middle of an important task and someone walks up to you to ask you to do something not important, say no. If it doesn’t affect your income or family then I don’t consider it important. It can wait. Don’t let someone else’s emergencies become yours.

Checking your emails 5 different times within 30 minutes is definitely not productive.

Checking Facebook every 5 mins is not productive either.

Say no to the nonproductive co-workers. We all have these folks around. The ones that will eat up 1 hour of your work time with reasons as to why they hate that job, or how the manager sucks at managing. etc… These type of people are potent to your productivity. They may be great people to hang around but they will kill your time because they don’t have any goals of their own.

Say no to nonproductive conversations. Even down to your managers, they can keep you tangled up in a nonproductive conversation. Repeating the same things over and over just to make themselves feel as though they are getting through to you.

Sometimes you have to tell yourself no to that non-productive task.
