XO Man opens the show for the Sugababes at latest HUGO URBAN RULES

With his unmistakable individual style and tongue-in-cheek lyrics, 6ft 10” XO Man won over the capacity crowd at Cargo in Shoreditch with the catchy ‘Lady Dog’ and his upcoming single ‘Microwave’. Sugababes then brought the house down with a storming live set which included the smash hits ‘Here Come The Girls’, ‘Push The Button’ and the number-one favourite ‘About You Now’, before award-winning Kiss FM DJ Manny Norté kept everyone dancing until the early hours. We caught up with a clearly pleased XO soon after the finale of the two-day event: “I was chuffed with the event - happy, amazed, excited, ecstatic. I was playing on the same stage as the Sugababes. They’ve been doing their thing for over ten years and the place was packed. I could not have asked for more!” XO Man has attracted a lot of industry interest and is set for great things in 2009. For those of you eager to find the next hot talent to download on your MP3 player, look no further than 20 year old solo vocalist Meleka from Buckinghamshire. Recent number one artist Estelle and former singer of Mis-teeq, Sabrina, were there to congratulate the young starlet on beating over 300 other budding young artists to be this year’s winner of our HUGO URBAN RULES music masterclass programme (see http://hubbublondon.com/our_clients/hugo_fragrances_casestudy for more details). Hubbub goes fishing

Last week was hubbub’s big fishing trip. We turned up at the jetty sporting matching yellow ponchos and hats to protect us from the elements – though it was a beautiful sunny day so goodness knows what Dave the fisherman was thinking as we climbed aboard! Mo took to it especially well, making her first catch before the rest of us even had cast our lines. Patrick followed suit with a baby crab. For the next hour or so it looked like the rest of us would be stuck eating seaweed, though a bumper catch at the last minute meant that no-one left empty handed. Dave taught us some old Irish sea shanties over drinks at the pub, and we sang all the way home. Thanks to Anna for organising such a lovely and memorable day!

Of course there’s all the usual stuff – a video blog, a forum, some downloads, etc. But by far and away the most exciting thing is our UGC competition, which gives consumers the chance to get involved in actual product creation. The way it works is with myspacers submitting their own original looks, which are then voted on by the community. The winner helps create the next Boots 17 make-up range, which is named after them and sold in Boots stores nationwide. We’re looking forward to seeing what kinds of original and eclectic looks our users come up with (and are of course planning on submitting some of our own). Mobile consumers prefer branded content

Advertisers should stick to branded content to avoid irritating mobile phone users with their promotions, according to a recent report by media agency Universal McCann. The study found that adverts displayed on mobile internet pages or in mobile TV clips annoyed 61 per cent of respondents. Of course, here at hubbub we’ve known for a while that the interruptive advertising model is crumbling – this piece of research just shows that the effect becomes even more pronounced when the medium is a mobile phone. Just as well that we’re already in the process of developing our first content initiative to exist solely on mobile. We can’t tell you what it is yet (it might ruin a lovely surprise for some very special people), but keep an eye on the blog to find out.

Nachos, sombreros, a mariachi band, piñatas and guacamole – you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in Mexico. In fact, you’d have just arrived at Hubbub’s offices last Friday for our impromptu afternoon fiesta.The limbo prize goes to Sarah, best Spanish air guitar prize goes to Rob, and the prize for who looks cutest in a sombrero goes to Anna.

Amerie confirmed for Hugo Urban Rules

We’re happy to announce that Amerie has been confirmed as headline artist at our next Hugo Urban Rules event this December. For those of you who don’t know who she is – where have you been? Like all of our previous artists (which include Amy Winehouse, Jamelia, and Sway), she’ll be appearing both on stage and on our artist panel, so all of our young hopefuls will be able to benefit from her knowledge and experience.
