(hubze.com) Wow!!! With the last post made by Lauren we just surpassed 1000 blogposts on www.hubze.com!

An amazing feat considering we are a very small staff of people working for peanuts (and some of those peanuts have been chewed up and spit out before!).

As we continue to grow my hope is that we can add more and more content that is not only news type content but is educational in nature.

We are looking at bringing on some additional bloggers to cover news stories as it relates to social media while David and I may focus a bit more on “How To” type posts and “Tips” on how to use Facebook, Google+, Twitter, YouTube and more.

You will also continue seeing podcasts covering social media news from me as well as occasional interviews of some of our favorite marketers online. Not always the biggest names, but will be those doing things the right way in our opinion.

We’ve seen a big increase in the amount of traffic and subscribers to our blog after Social Media Examiner named our blog the top 4 Social Media blog of 2012 recently! An honor we aren’t taking lightly. It has actually caused us to rethink what we post and how we post it. And that’s a good thing.

So from myself, David and the rest of the Hubze Blog Squad I want to say THANK YOU!

And lets see how fast we get to another 1000 blogposts! My bet is it will be alot faster!

(hubze) For those of you who love Google+ and still want to keep in touch with the Facebook world (no matter how inferior it may seem)– one way to keep in touch would be to export Facebook birthdays and put them wherever you want.

Google Calendar is a good place to put Birthdays.

Export Birthdays From Facebook

Go to your Facebook profile and click the “Events” tab on the left-hand side

On the “Events” page, at the top right-hand corner, click the blue drop-down menu (featuring a magnifying glass)

From the drop-down menu, select “Birthdays” and you will be taken to the “Birthdays” page

Click the drop-down menu from this page and select “Export Birthdays…”, a pop-up will offer up a URL for you to take and throw-around as you see fit

Now you have all the birthdays of your friends, family, co-workers, and acquaintances. As I said before, Google Calendar is a good place to put Birthdays.. so let’s do that!

Go to your Google Calendar

On the “Other Calendars” tab beneath “My Calendars”, you can add the Birthdays via the drop-down menu which features an option to “Add by URL”

A pop-up will…pop-up, and you can paste the URL from Facebook into Google Calendars

For those of you making the switch to Google plus, and struggling everyday to retrieve your data from Facebook, this ought to be a small victory.

With that said, I am surprised that Facebook is allowing users to take their precious data away, seeing as Google is the poster-boy of the free information front. Jump-on Facebook’s offer before they change their minds.

Comment and let us know what you like better, Google Calendars or Facebook’s one-day only Birthday wall explosion…

(hubze.com) Everyone is going on and on about the possibility that Facebook COULD be making an announcement on February 29th that Timeline is coming to pages. It’s all speculation at this point and to guess as to what the Timeline for pages MIGHT look like is a bit of a waste of time in my opinion.

Once a change is made then we’ll go from there.

But, according to Peter Corbett of iStrategyLabs, the bigger announcement on February 29th will be that Facebook is moving to a Premium Ad platform and in doing so ditching the current ad format.

In his blogpost on Gigaom.com he stated that:

The company expects the new ads to perform 40 to 8o percent better than its previous product.

He claims that the documents shown below in presentation format were emailed to him. What you should take note of is the focus on ads being placed right from your page and from your page’s content. Studies have shown that ads using the Sponsored Stories are much better received than just random ads with a girl with big boobs on them.. (Although those ads did perform well at one point sadly. )

Also what is cool with the new version of ads is anything you post on your page you can choose as an ad, you can then target it however you want and there will be an ability for people to comment on the post from the ad!

To me this is bigger news than a layout change on pages as this will change how pages advertise and gain more targeted fans. Check out the documents below then share and comment on this post.

(hubze) Facebook is coming to terms with a slow down in growth (babies can’t be born quick enough), and figuring out ways to get users to spend even more time on the social network, to pick up the slack.

Twitter , however, still has tons of ground to cover, and that is exactly what is happening.

In analysis of Twopcharts data, AllTwitter announced that Twitter will hit 500 million users by Wednesday, half the user-base of Facebook.

Twitter’s steady surge in user growth can be attributed to integration with iOS 5 and Apple’s newest operating system, Mountain Lion.Twitter’s flourishing relationship with Apple has integrated a little Tweet button everywhere you go on Apple operating systems: Safari, Maps, Photos, and Videos from YouTube.

Additionally, Twitter announced a partnership with Russian search dominator, Yandex. This partnership will be similar, if not identical, to Twitter’s old affair with Google Search. Yandex will now have access to Twitter’s treasure trove of real-time information, while Google Search sifts through the slim, sad, geeky pickin’s of Google+.

As a side note, although Yandex is the “leading internet company in Russia, operating the most popular search engine and the most visited website,” Yandex isn’t exactly a Search god or maybe I’m just spoiled by the streamlined utility of Google Search, check-it out (search your name) and let me know if you think Yandex deserves Twitter and your Tweets.

Twitter’s estimated growth, 500 million users by Wednesday, is based on a chart from Twopcharts, below. According to the chart, within the past day, there were 894,900 signups. Social Media data addicts have even estimated the exact time at which Twitter will garner half a billion users; get the champagne into your glasses before 3:45 pm ET (I know it’s early, but, hey, someone is tweeting at 5 o’clock somewhere). Take a look at the chart below:

Comment and show love (or hate) for Twitter!

(Feature image: Fast Company, Chart: AllTwitter)

(hubze) Maybe you’ve heard of Pinterest, which is growing in popularity– seeing as social media blogs say so, and the ladies love it (Google+ is jealous).

The Pinterest user base has grown to over 10.4 million registered users, according to Tech Crunch, who cites “2 million daily Facebook users.” Who would have thought… by reaching out to Pinterest users, you would increase your Facebook reach.

Social media worlds are overlapping. A majority of Pinterest users are Facebook users, and a chunk of Facebook users are fans of Pinterest on Facebook. In fact, “97% of Pinterest’s Facebook fans are women,” women of all different shapes, sizes, and personalities; some like guns, some like dandelions, some like girls– ay, pretty, pretty, Pinteresting!

FYI Pinterest was created by three men.

Anyway, you may be wondering how to get Pinterest integrated into your website and tap into a whole new world of users who want to “pin” your products. You are going to need a “Pin It” button to get the “Pinning” started. Or maybe you want Pinterest to stay away…there is a way to block pinning to your site all together.

How to Get the “Pin It” Button

The Pin It button is designed in cahoots with the Like button, the Tweet button, and the plus button. By incorporating a “Pin It” button into your website, you are giving your audience permission to share content.

The cool thing about “Pin It” is that you can customize the plug-in with a little description. You can pick one up in the Goodies section of Pinterest, here.

How To Block Pinning

I don’t know why you would want to block referral traffic, but if you do, it’s your lucky day because Pinterest released a code with a polite message to help you out:

Comment and let us know if you are a Pinning, and if so, do you credit your sources according to Pinterest etiquette?

For the longest time, Japan has been the second country with the largest number of Twitter users. That is until recently.

A recent study conducted by Semiocast revealed that that spot now belongs to Brazil. While the United States still reigns with 107.7 million users, Brazil is now second with 33.3 million Twitter users, while Japan falls to the third spot with 29.9 million users. The United Kingdom “(23.8 million), Indonesia (19.5 million), India, Mexico, the Philippines, Spain and Canada rounds up the top ten.

But that does not mean that Japanese Twitter users have somewhat quieted down. In the period between September 1, 2011 to November 30, 2011, a larger percentage of accounts from Japan tweeted a message at 30%, compared to only 25% from Brazil. In fact, Brazil fell below the global average of 27%. Japanese is still the second most use language on the microblogging site after English.

Chris Brown Shows Us How NOT to Deal with Fans on Twitter

Chris Brown might have won a Grammy, but people all over social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter did not exactly celebrate with him. In fact, most people bashed his Grammy performance, while others brought up how he assaulted former girlfriend Rihanna on the night of the Grammy’s just three years ago.

Brown did not like it and tweeted that people could hate all they want because he has a Grammy now. Then ended the tweet with “That’s the ultimate F$$$ OFF!” Not contented, Brown went on to fire off a series of offensive tweets with basically the same sentiments.

Brown immediately deleted the offending tweet within minutes but it has been retweeted and favorited by more than 50 people by then.

Imagine if this were your business account and you have tweeted the same? Your customers would immediately stay away. Negative feedback should be embraced and handled properly. It seems that Brown needs to take a cue on what to avoid on social media from Boners BBQ.

Twitter Ads for Small Businesses Open Soon

Good news for business owners in the United States. Twitter is opening up a simplified way for small businesses to advertise on the platform via Promoted Tweets and Promoted Accounts. The exact details are not out yet, but it seems that the new system will enable business owners to take advantage of the promoted ads without any intervention on Twitter. You no longer have to be a big national brand to be able to advertise on Twitter!

But that’s not all. Twitter, in partnership with AMEX, will be giving away $100 worth of free advertising to the first 10,000 business owners who are deemed qualified to avail of the new advertising platforms. This is open only to American Express Cardmembers and only those based in the United States.

The hubze squad thinks that it is about time that Twitter opens its advertising platform to every business who wants to avail of it. As Twitter has already admitted in the same blog post, small business owners are behind some of the most effective marketing campaigns on Twitter.

We just hope that Twitter plays it cool and still takes into consideration that they have to balance advertising (how they make money) and user experience on the site. Twitter already has a full user interface, relying on sections and parts appearing and being hidden as needed, we would like to see how promoted tweets by small business owners would compare to those taken out by big brands.

(hubze.com) For those who are maintaining their own blogs or their own websites, blog commenting is a great addition to their marketing activities. Why?

It Strengthens Your Brand.

Because blog commenting allows you to get more brand awareness for your own blog. If you are new to the blogosphere or if you have a new website, the only way for you to become known in your niche or industry is to go to other related blogs and participate in that community. For example, if you have an Etsy business specializing in children’s party favors or nursery designs, you will have a limited number of readers at first. What you can do is to visit other similar but established blogs such as ProjectNursery.com and then participate in there. Not only will you be conversing with other people, but you can get your own brand known. You can also build relationships with the people in that blog.

Get More Visits.

You could also get organic traffic from blog commenting. For example, if you run a blog or site about your restaurant, the only way that you could get readers is by asking your customers to read your blog or visit your site personally, or through your social media accounts. With blog commenting, however, you can invite people to visit your links. By contributing to the conversation, you can then direct them to your site to see how it works in action.

For instance, you can offer your own blog post on creative cake decoration if there are blog posts on the same topic in another blog.

Great for SEO too!

Like it or not, blog commenting is a great way to boost your search engine ranking. Google might have changed a lot of things with regard to its algorithm, but link juice and authority is still very high in the list of things it considers for ranking.

Commenting on do-follow blogs can build up your incoming link profile, and in the long run can help your search engine rankings increase.

Other Blog Commenting Benefits.

But the best thing about blog commenting is that you are involving yourself in something that you are interested in. You could get to see what others in your business, industry or niche are doing. You get to know how they are selling their products or marketing their services. In short, you learn from what others are doing right and from the mistakes they make as well.

Another intangible benefit of blog commenting is that you are able to build relationships with your fellow readers and the other blog owners. Over time, your contribution to their blogs would be noticed and appreciated.

Blog commenting is also a great springboard to getting invited to write a guest blog post. If the blog owners see just how knowledgeable you are about a certain topic, or if you offer your time to write a guest blog, you have just earned yourself a chance to paint yourself as an expert in that particular subject area.

But it is Not That Easy.

Admittedly, however, you would need to spend a lot of time and effort to make all of these happen. You would need to be genuinely interested in the subject area to be able to develop relationships with other enthusiasts, and to be able to contribute into the discussions.

Fortunately, the hubze squad has some tips lined up for you to ensure that you do blog commenting right, so catch us next week for that!

(hubze.com) Hey Hubzers! The past 3 days I’ve been in Austin, Tx at an internet marketing event called the “Leverage Summit”, put on by the guys at Job Crusher.

Now let me be completely upfront and honest here. I have NEVER gone to any sort of internet marketing conference, convention, pep rally, training, event and etc. I’m just not a live event guy. and honestly I don’t have the money to go to them so that’s probably my leading reason for not going. Most are just too expensive to go and my family of 5 lives on peanuts so I can’t afford to go to them plus hotel and food is costly as well.

But, I got a free ticket to this event in Austin, which is about a 3.5 hour drive from our house outside of Houston. So we decided to drive up. Plus, my wife’s parents live in a little town called Granger, Tx so we stayed with them so I didn’t have to pay for a hotel. Granted this meant getting up at 6am each day and driving about 90 minutes one way to get to the event. But better than forking out the $150+ per night for a hotel! So my wife and kids stayed with them while I was/am at the event.

Listen to the podcast and then I’ll add some commentary below. (Do note that I recorded this podcast on my iPhone using the Spreaker app so the quality is what it is and you’ll hear the Spreaker intro.)

Download audio file (UfQpJ8HN0)

Ok… So my opinion going into this event wasn’t that high. I don’t know any of the marketers mentioned on stage (Bill McIntosh, Matt Gill, Matt Bacak, Jack Wize, David Frey, Devon Brown, Keith Baxter, Devon Michaels, Eric Louviere (sp?) and others). I do know Kate Buck, Jr via Facebook as we talk alot about social media.

But, other than that I don’t know these people from Adam! So my expectations were very low for the event. I expected it to be nothing but a big sales pitch and on Day 2 they didn’t fail me!

Day 3 is about to start and I have no idea how long it is set to be. They didn’t give out any sort of schedule for the weekend. Everything was pretty vague even leading up to the start of the event. And I’m a control freak so not knowing the schedule is driving me nuts!

We’ll see how today goes and I’ll share my thoughts on it and events like this tomorrow. Have a great Sunday!

(hubze.com) It is no secret on the hubze blog that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is monitoring social media, both nationally and internationally.

You may recall the story of two British tourists being deported for tweeting. The two were apprehended at customs by DHS officials who referred to the social network as “Tweeter.”

According to the Huffington Post, “taxpayers have shelled out more than $11 million to a private contractor to analyze online comments that ‘reflect adversely’ on the federal government.”

Lawmakers have recently taken notice of the DHS and their monitoring of social media, and they don’t like what they see. The House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counter-terrorism and Intelligence is scrutinizing the DHS over their monitoring of social media, on the grounds of YOUR privacy.

LOOK (it’s a bureaucratic drag show):

Click here to view the embedded video.

Apparently the DHS is using the private contractor, General Dynamics, to monitor social media or “capture public reaction to major government proposals” and government agencies. And they aren’t limited to sites like Facebook and Twitter but also comments on popular media outlets such as The Huffington Post, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and Wired– among others.

Rep. Patrick Meehan (R-PA) recognizes the advantages to monitoring social media:

if an individual willingly uses Facebook, Twitter or the comment section of a news website, they in effect forfeit their right to an expectation of privacy. However, other private individuals reading your Facebook status updates is different than a Department of Homeland Security reading them, analyzing…and collecting them for possible future purposes.

First Amendment rights of free speech are on the line; it’s important that citizens are confident in exercising this right to whatever degree– within the bounds of legitimate protest.

The DHS claims that they are interested in the “what” not the “who.”

But check-out this video, if you can bear it. Here is Richard Chavez and Mary Callaghan, the heads of the DHS effort to monitor social media, defending their monitoring process. Their confusion in the breath of Meehan’s questioning is unsettling. Apparently Chavez doesn’t know whether or not the CIA monitors social media too (why is everyone in government doing the same job badly?).

(hubze.com) You may think that you have your Facebook marketing campaign down pat. You have read about the best practices for creating and maintaining a Facebook page for your business, and have been applying these for your pages. You have also been reading the hubze blog for updates and more tips on doing your Facebook marketing right. But there are things that come only with experience. Here are some tips that are not well-known, so make sure you read up on them:

1. Always update your page with interesting content. Remember that you have a lot of lurkers. In fact, it is estimated that only 1 out of 10 people who see your page and status updates would like or comment on it. The others would be considered lurkers, those who read your status updates and do nothing. This is why interesting content should come in. A well-written and informative blog post, a funny video, or provocative articles can encourage your lurkers to comment and like your page.

2. Only status updates with more than 4 likes and comments make it to the Top News section of anybody’s news feed. You probably do not know this, but status updates with more comments and likes are more likely to show up on your customers’ news feed. With this in mind, you might want to tell your customers and likers to like your status updates. If everything else fails, tell staff members, friends and family to like or comment on your status updates.

3. That human factor. Facebook nowadays gives more emphasis to multimedia content, with pictures and videos getting more prominent space on a users’ newsfeed and your own timeline. While it makes sense to use your business name as your Facebook page title, you can still add a more human feel to your page by uploading photographs of your employees. Show them having fun at work or assisting a customer or something that would give your customers an idea on how their days go by. You can also upload a video of you or anybody from your team talking about your product, or imparting tips.

4. Pictures speak louder than words. Instead of telling people about your new product, why not show it to them instead? If you run a restaurant, why not post a picture of your dishes on Facebook?

5. Send an Update to Fans. Every now and then, it might help if you could send a private message to all your fans. Facebook makes it easier for you to do this by adding a “Send an Update to Fans” link under the Promote Your Page section of your business page.

Just a caveat, though. Do not use this feature to spam your fans. Instead of sending them notifications on just about everything you do, make sure that you have something really important to say, such as the opening of a new branch, or the launch of a new product line. This way, your messages would not be seen as a nuisance and get ignored. Worst, if you send useless updates to your fans, they might opt to unlike your page.

Do you have tips on how to optimize your Facebook marketing efforts? Send it to us!

(hubze) Facebook is going to start verifying the accounts of celebrities and public figures, but for some bizarre reason, there is going to be no icon to indicate this verification for users.

Twitter and Google+ have been verifying accounts like its nobodies business.

With Google, every account is essentially verified because of the real name policy. Public figures, however, are given little grey check marks next to their name that unravel under your cursor to read “verified name.”

It’s pretty much the same way on Twitter. Maybe you’ve seen the Twitter verified badge, maybe you’ve always wondered how to get one of those little blue check marks.

Twitter’s verification process separates @Oprah from the hilarious parody account, @OprahWinfry. The verification process with Twitter has made parody accounts THE THING to follow.

So Facebook is going to start verifying the accounts, which is a great addition to their subscribe feature. The first to be verified will be those with a great deal of subscribers.

FYI Mark Zuckerberg has the most Facebook subscribers, 11.5 million.

The feature is starting out as invite-only. Once an account is verified it will pop-up more often in the list of “people to subscribe to” until you finally give-in and subscribe.

However, the only marker of a verified account is a prominent nickname/pseudonym over their real-name.

So yea, Robyn Rihanna Fenty can be Rihanna and Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta can be Lady GaGa… but isn’t that the way it already is? Yes, I mean at least as far as fan pages go.

I guess Facebook not only wants celebrities to participate on their FanPages but on personal accounts as well…which is kind of weird if you ask me. Granted there are personal accounts of people like Robert Scoble (132K subscribers), who will definitely benefit from the verification process.

Regardless, I think Facebook is in need of a verified badge, the pseudonym privilege is trivial.

Comment and Let us know what you think, if you are interested in getting verified you will have to send Facebook an image of a government issued I.D. ( or your birth certificate along with a credit card) Facebook promises to delete this information. Would you send your information to Facebook to get your account verified?

(hubze.com) Scheduling your tweets and status updates is a great way to still manage your social media efforts without consuming too much of your time. This is why Buffer is very popular among social media users.

Now Buffer has come out with an iPhone app that lets you schedule your tweets and status updates on the go. But some Buffer users are complaining that the app. If you are one of those people who are used to using the Buffer app on your desktop computers, you might need to follow these simple tutorials on using the iPhone version of Buffer.

Add articles from Safari

Reading an interesting article on your iPhone and want to share it with your followers? No problem. If you have the Buffer Bookmarklet installed on your Safari, you can instantly share the article just by tapping on “Add to Buffer” even before you finish reading it. If you are adding more than one article, Buffer would instantly share the articles according to your set schedule.

To install the bookmarklet, just open the Settings on the app, tap on open Safari and follow the guide. Tap the “Add bookmark” link so that you could add the page on your Safari and then save it.

Go to your bookmarks and look for the new bookmark you have just saved, click edit and go to the URL given. Change the URL to remove everything before up to the # sign so that it reads “javascript” and the rest of the URL.

Everytime you see an article you want to share, just tap the Bookmark bar and tap the bookmarklet.

Editing Your Updates

You can use the app to edit your updates. When you open the Buffer app, you are shown a list of your scheduled updates. Just tap on any update you want to modify and tap on option. You will have the option to edit the update, post it now or delete it.

Rearrange Your Updates

You could easily rearrange your updates by tapping the reorder button at the top right of your app and just drag and drop your updates according to the order you want it to go out.

View the Analytics

You could easily view the Analytics by tapping on the button at the bottom of the screen. Choose the update you want the analytics for and check out just how many clicks, retweets and reach were gathered for that particular update.

Extras:

With the new Buffer app, you can easily switch accounts just by swiping across the screen. You would have to connect your different accounts to do this, though.

If you are looking for an easy way to buffer retweets from your iPhone, then check out Tweetings. Tweetings now work with Buffer so that you could conveniently buffer retweets while staying inside the client.

If you use a news reading app such as Zite or Flipboard, you have the option to e-mail the articles to Buffer. This would also help you if you do not have an Android or iOS phone that works with the Buffer app.

(hubze) When Google came out with Google+ the tech world took notice of the social media epidemic. So, a the question was posed to big companies, like Google, who would have the power to virtually monopolize social media all together: Are Apple and Microsoft going to integrate social networks into their operating systems?

Apple has never been social even though they have a wildly loyal user-base and dominate not only the personal computer market, but also control the mobile market, a spot which Google and Facebook would kill to have (and they are scrambling, Google acquired Motorola for 12.5 billion dollars last year).

All I’m saying is, its about (“expletive”) time Apple got social. The integration of Twitter into Mountain Lion OS devices is huge, because it’s probably going to be integrated into consecutive operating systems, for the sake of continuity– at least until one or the other falls out of relevancy.

Why not Facebook? Facebook threatened Apple when it announced integration with loads of media outlets like Spotify and Netflix. Instead of browsing iTunes for media, you now can browse your Newsfeed which is filled with recommendations from people you know and/or subscribe to. Not to mention, Microsoft is literally invested into Facebook.

And what does Twitter, get out of teaming up with the most valuable company in the world? According to TechCrunch, “there are over 60 million macs out there.” When OS X Mountain Lion hits the shelves this summer, sparking Best Buy camp-outs and updates for Tigers/Leopards/Snow Leopards/etc… Twitter will be front and center, at the delectable core of all the fun.

According to Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, when Twitter was integrated into iOS5 devices, sign-ups jumped 25%. There are more people out there with iOS5 devices and no Macs; take me for example: writing to you from a loud angry Dell laptop and playing words with friends when I get writer’s block.

Mac apps will see more Twitter integration as well, instead of Facebook. As TechCrunch puts it, “With iOS, apps can choose to use Twitter to ease new sign-ups — allowing people to get going with one or two clicks. Now Mac apps will be able to do the same thing.”

In short: Twitter is WINNING.

Do you like the iOS5 integration with Twitter? It’s a preview of what’s to come this summer. Comment and let us know what you think about this new power couple!

(hubze.com) There is no shortage of people that absolutely hate the new Facebook Timeline. As those that complain are always the loudest!

Personally I dig the Timeline and think it’s the best change Facebook has ever added to our profiles.

But I digress…

If you’re wanting to get rid of the Timeline there is an extension for Firefox and Chrome that will let you do this. It’s called Timeline Remove.

Basically what it looks like it does is trick your browser into thinking it’s an older version of Internet Explorer and somehow changes the view of your profile back to how it used to be. But, others will still see it, so I’m not sure of the point of doing it.

I’ll be honest I installed it in Chrome and it worked, was so weird going back to the old profile! Since I’ve had the Timeline since September. Once you install you have to close and then re-open your browsers for it to work. I will say that for whatever reason Norton 360 shot back that it was a threat when I first tried to install it on Chrome and it crashed Chrome. But when I tried again I got no messages like that.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.
