Cuffe wins 3,200 state title; Mosley wins 600

Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall won the girls’ 3,200-meter run at the New York State indoor track and field championships this morning in Ithaca. Her time of 9:36 was 20 seconds better than Colleen Schmidt of Holy Trinity.
In the afternoon session, Middletown’s Mel Mosley won the boys’ 600 in 1:20.87.
Lillian Greibesland of Warwick was 9th and Megan Patrignelli of Monroe-Woodbury was 14th in the 1,000.
Victoria Alexander of Beacon was seventh in the 55 dash.
Christina Zelenoy of Monroe-Woodbury was 12th, Cynthia Gray of Pine Bush was 17th and Rachel Miller of Cornwall was 29th in the 600.
Soroya Hudson of Cornwall was eighth, Doris Little of Newburgh was 10th and Jessica Dunnigan of Liberty was 13th in the long jump.
Jennifer Mitchell of Newburgh was second, Hudson of Cornwall was third and Sara Wickes of Monroe-Woodbury was fourth in the triple jump.
Rachel Deppa of Sullivan West was 12th and Coutney Garrison of Newburgh was 13th in the 1,500 racewalk.
Emily Waligurski of Onteora was sixth and Meaghan Ventarola of Monroe-Woodbury was 11th in the 1,500.
The Intersectional distance medley relay team from Section Nine placed fourth.
Dotrine Jacobs of Newburgh was fourth in the 55 hurdles. Wickes was 21st.
Amber Passalaqua of Pine Bush was 19th and Delany Lynch of Monroe-Woodbury was 22nd in the 300.
In the relays, Monroe-Woodbury was fifth in the 3,200; Newburgh was second in the 1,600; and Monroe-Woodbury was eighth in the 800.
In the high jump, Ashley Grant of Monroe-Woodbury was fifth and Passalaqua was sixth.
In the pole vault, Kayla Leahey of Warwick was fourth, Nicole Kulaga of Pine Bush was ninth and Ariel LaChance of Cornwall was 16th.
In the shot put, Dominique Darby of Tri-Valley was 20th and Katherine Mollahan of Cornwall was 22nd in the shot put.

Warwick’s Greibesland headed to North Carolina State

Warwick Valley senior Lillian Greibesland has accepted a full scholarship to run cross country and track for North Carolina State University — she will have a signing ceremony at the high school later this week. This has to be a big relief for the distance standout, who has faced a long recovery from a torn Achilles tendon suffered in the fall of 2008. She looked super at the OCIAA girls’ championships on Saturday, winning the 1,000-meter run going away from Monroe-Woodbury’s Megan Patrignelli.

M-W’s Patrignelli accepts scholarship to Oregon

Monroe-Woodbury mid-distance standout Megan Patrignelli has accepted a scholarship to attend the University of Oregon, long-considered one of the premier collegiate track and field programs in the nation.

Cuffe named state’s top girls’ cross country runner

Cornwall junior Aisling Cuffe was named the Gatorade New York Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.
Cuffe won the state Class A title, the state Federation title and was unbeaten this season until placing fourth at the Footlocker nationals.
The award recognizes athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character. Cuffe maintains an ‘A’ average in school, volunteers with local youth running programs and is a member of the Cornwall Math Team.
Cuffe is now a finalist for the national award.

Two NFA relays, Monroe boys qualify for Millrose Games

Congratulations go out to the Newburgh Free Academy 4-by-400 relay teams for boys and girls for qualifying for the Millrose Games. Both Goldback squads won their respective Rockland/Orange trials heat at the New York Armory, and will compete at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 29. Also, the Monroe-Woodbury boys, who led after the first two legs of the boys’ race, came back from behind on the final lap to edge Suffern and earn the second spot to MSG.

Beacon will not apply for Section 9 membership afterall

Beacon High School, and its other district schools, will not be formally applying for membership in Section 9, citing the increased travel costs that it would require to play in a league with Port Jervis, Cornwall, Monticello and Goshen. Beacon currently plays in a league with Dutchess County schools John Jay, Roy C. Ketcham, Arlington, Poughkeepsie and Our Lady of Lourdes (in the Town of Poughkeepsie), so the travel expenses would be much lower.
However, Beacon athletics director Eric Romanino said last month that there are still concerns about his teams playing against squads from much-larger schools such as Class AA’s Arlington, John Jay, Ketcham and Poughkeepsie.
The Beacon district submitted an application to Section 9 in November, and Romanino met with both the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association and Mid-Hudson Athletic League — both leagues appeared to be open to Beacon joining their circuits.

Section 9 vote on Beacon High School application set for Jan. 12

Section 9 executive director Bob Thabet said discussion on Beacon High School’s application to join the section went well on Monday. He said a vote will be made at the next sectional meeting on Jan. 12.
Beacon athletics director Eric Romanino met with representatives from the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association on Nov. 24, and he has a meeting with the Mid-Hudson Athletic League on Friday in Kingston.

Faldermeyer named All-American, headed to UCLA

Minisink Valley standout Alec Faldermeyer was named an All-American by Track and Field News magazine. Faldermeyer won hammer throw at the Nike Outdoor Nationals.
Faldermeyer has made a commitment to compete for UCLA, Minisink coach Leyla Williams said.
Faldermeyer ranked second in the nation in the outdoor hammer throw, with a toss of 232 feet, 7 inches on July 19. He represented the United States at the World Youth Championships in Italy, finishing sixth.

Seeding for state girls’ swimming championships

Newburgh Free Academy freshman Brittany Friese is the third seed in the 200-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle for this weekend’s state championships in Rochester.
Monroe-Woodbury freshman Morgan Fairclough is the sixth seed in the 100 backstroke. Washingtonville junior Colleen Larkin is the seventh seed in the 100 butterfly. Washingtonville senior Morganne Klein is the eighth seed in the 100 breaststroke. Warwick diver Shannon McNamara is seeded ninth.
