Merlin Olsen, a 14-time Pro Bowler and former lead NFL analyst for NBC Sports, passed away Wednesday night at the age of 69.
Olsen worked with Dick Enberg on the top NBC on NFL team from 1978-1988, and the pair called the Rose Bowl from 1980-88. He also worked with Curt Gowdy, Jim Simpson and Charlie Jones during his NBC days (1977-89).
Olsen jumped to CBS in 1990 and worked with Dick Stockton, Sean McDonough and Brad Nessler for two seasons.
The Enberg-Olsen pair was remarkable. Olsen was very knowledgable about the game but was never over-stated or prone to hype.
For many Americans, however, Olsen will be remembered as a commercial spokesman for FTD Florists, and as the character Jonathan Garvey on “Little House on the Prairie.”
Olsen passed away from mesothelioma. He was diagnosed last year, and in January he filed a lawsuit against NBC Studios, NBC Universal and 20th Century Fox for exposing him to asbestos.
Olsen was voted to the California Sports Hall of Fame for 2010. The football field at his alma mater, Utah State, is going to be named in his honor in the fall.

MLB Network (Major League Baseball) will begin airing daily spring training games starting March 2 and running through the rest of the month. Most of the telecasts air are Grapefruit League contests at 1 p.m., but there will also be Cactus League games at 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. and even some night games from both Florida and Arizona.

The Canadian television ratings for the opening five days of the Winter Olympics have come out, and apparently three Canadians have not tuned in. Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but the latest update says 94.5 percent of all Canadians have watched part of the Olympics.
The numbers are impressive in the United States as well, with about one in three having tuned in thus far (mind you, the USA is a lot more populated than the Great White North).
New Yorkers are watching on WNBC-4, though not in the droves as other markets in America. The opening ceremonies on Friday drew an 18.5 rating and 30 share, ranking 33rd among the top metered markets.
Saturday prime time garnered a 14.1/25 (ranking 42nd). Sunday was a 14.8/24 (ranked 43rd). Monday’s numbers were 14.7/24 (ranked 35th). Tuesday’s numbers were 13.8/21 (ranked 29th).
