I’m a huge fan of traveling and intend to visit many new countries this year. What better than actually making some money while traveling! Read on for some ideas!

When traveling abroad, it could be very beneficial to many people if they had the ability to make money during their travels.

As you are about to learn, there are some jobs that are really good for travelers. But there are certain things that could get in the way like the destination you’re going to, or your employer for that matter.

Maybe you’d love to travel abroad, but the only way you could go it is if you have the ability to make money during your trip. If that’s the case, you’re in luck because there are definitely some creative ways to make money while traveling abroad.

We’ll share our absolute favorite most effective ways to make money while traveling with you right now.

Have You Considered Starting a Travel Blog?

Oddly enough, writing a travel blog is definitely a great way to see the world and make money at the same time.

As an example, let’s say you’ve decided to create a travel blog.

One thing you could do is write about the food you eat during your adventures or about the amazing Pearl Harbour experience you’ve had.

And to monetize your blog, you can sell affiliate products on it.

When someone comes to your blog and clicks one in your affiliate links, and then goes through and makes the purchase, you will then get a commission for the sale.

The best way to make money with affiliate products is to only promote products and services that you trust. Otherwise you’re attempting to convince people to buy things that aren’t high quality or high-value, and they will ultimately stop reading your blog if they get burned enough times by crappy affiliate products.

Another possibility is to use your travel blog to sell e-books.

People are obviously reading your blog because they want to find out more about your overseas adventures. So write an e-book and tell the tale in its entirety and then promote it within your blog posts.

How about Becoming a Travel Photographer?

Getting started in the travel photography game is not the easiest thing to accomplish, so that might be a negative for some people.

On the other side of the coin, you do not have to necessarily have the best photography equipment to get started. And you also don’t have to be the best photographer in order to make money in this industry.

Having a decent camera certainly helps. Having a good eye for photography isn’t going to hurt you any either. But it isn’t hard to learn basic photography skills, so you’ll be able to get started relatively quickly without much experience.

Have You Thought about Working As a Traveling Freelancer?

Freelancing is an amazing way to make money while traveling.

There are so many potential ways to make money that it’s not even funny.

You can work as a freelance writer, a search engine optimization specialist, a graphic designer, an English teacher, a musician, and author, a tour guide, and there are many more options.

Ultimately, it’s occasionally difficult to stay organized with your business when traveling abroad. So if you are going to freelance during your travels, organization is the key to lasting success.

If you are going to freelance, we highly recommend using time tracking software as a productivity booster. By tracking your time spent working, you’ll see where you are doing well and where you need to improve.

Is Online Fundraising an Option?

Maybe you’d prefer not to work at all while traveling abroad.

Crowdfunding campaigns are an excellent way to raise money for your travels without having to lift a finger.

If you promote your campaign ahead of time, and share it with family and friends on social media, you may raise enough money to travel the world without the need to work at all while you are enjoying your time off.

Conclusion
It’s definitely possible to make money while traveling abroad. Please use these suggestions to get started today.

We are huge fans of FreeAgent here at Hull Digital so delighted to have Emily giving us some very valuable information. Read on and learn!

VAT can be very frightening for anyone who runs their own small business, especially if you’re already struggling with paperwork and wondering what you should be telling the taxman.

So what is VAT, does it affect you, and – if so – how do you register for it?

Emily Coltman FCA, Chief Accountant to FreeAgent – who provide the UK’s market-leading online accounting system specifically-designed for small businesses and freelancers – offers her top tips for understanding VAT and registering your business for it.

A quick introduction

VAT is short for Value Added Tax – or as I like to call it Very Awkward Tax – and it’s a tax that’s charged on most sales of goods and services in the UK.

When your business makes sales, you don’t charge VAT to your customers unless you’re registered with HMRC to do so. Sales on which VAT would normally be charged are called “taxable sales”. Sales that are exempt from VAT, or outside the scope of UK VAT, are not taxable sales.

At present you only have to register your business if its annual taxable sales are over the limit set by HMRC – which, as of April 1st 2014, is £81,000.

Do I need to register for VAT?

If your annual taxable sales are above £81,000 per year, or they will pass the limit in the next 30 days, then you must register for VAT (this is called compulsory registration).

In some cases you may also wish to register earlier – which is called voluntary registration. Registering before you have to can help your cashflow, because being registered for VAT allows your business to claim back input VAT on its costs (we’ll explain more about this later).

However if your customers are members of the general public or small businesses who aren’t registered for VAT themselves, it may not a good idea to register voluntarily – as you’ll have to charge them VAT which they won’t be able to claim back, meaning they feel your prices are higher.

You can register for VAT either by filling in a paper form or registering online. If HMRC accept your application for registration, they will send you a certificate confirming this, which will also show your business’s unique VAT reference number.

OK, I’m registered – what next?

Once your business is registered for VAT, then it has to charge VAT on all the taxable sales it makes to its customers. The VAT you charge to your customers is called “output VAT”.

Your business will also be able to reclaim some of the VAT that its suppliers charge. (I say “some” advisedly, because there are some supplies on which VAT can’t be reclaimed, such as entertaining anyone other than staff). VAT that can be reclaimed is called “input VAT”.

VAT-registered businesses must file a regular report called a VAT return to HMRC. Your VAT return shows your business’s output VAT, less its input VAT – and the difference is what you must actually pay to HMRC.

If your input VAT is greater than your output VAT, lucky you – you’ll get a refund from HMRC!

Managing the transition period

You apply to be registered for VAT as from a certain date. There will usually be an interim period between that date and the arrival of your certificate and VAT registration number.

You’ll have to charge output VAT on any sales after your registration date – but until your VAT registration number arrives, you can’t issue official VAT invoices.

Reached an impasse? What you’ll need to do is to add the relevant rate of VAT – usually 20% – to the total value of all your invoices as from the date you’ve applied to be registered from, so that you don’t have to go back and ask your customers for more money.

Once your VAT registration number comes through, you’ll then need to re-issue any invoices you’ve issued in the interim period to your customers. This is so that your customers have official VAT invoices and can reclaim input VAT on the goods or services they’ve bought from you, because HMRC say that you can’t reclaim VAT unless it’s shown on a proper VAT invoice.

Remember that VAT can be exceptionally confusing, so if you have any queries about VAT and how it affects your business in general, you should check with HMRC or speak to your accountant for more advice.

Can you even imagine having a something like the latest iPhone in your pocket five years ago, let alone ten years ago? I can remember sending my first email at University. In 1993. I can remember queuing for the fabled iPhone. In 2007.

Now look at the wonders of technology, which are an intrinsic part of every day life, with devices with more computing power than the first Apollo mission.

Whether personal or business, we are living in a connected world, and this is only going to get better (or worse depending on how you feel).

My guess is that many people reading this will have opened a present over the holiday period, which falls into the category of a technology device or gadget. Children especially are receiving tablets or smartphones, which enable a wealth of communication. These young people will possibly make a VOIP call via FaceTime or Skype before making a proper phonecall.

2013 has been a vintage year for the digital sector in Hull. The LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) Board agreed to incorporate the digital sector as one of its future priorities, but we also launched the C4DI, the Centre for Digital Innovation.

Hull needs the title: to regenerate the city, create jobs and grow tourism, laying to rest 400 years of the Beggars’ Litany: ‘From Hull, Hell and Halifax Good Lord deliver us..’, through transforming perceptions of the city. Inspired by Larkin’s poem Days’ the ambition is for each day in 2017 to make a difference to a life in the city, the UK and globally.

Hull wants the title: over 250 people have contributed ideas for the 2017 programme through workshops and surgeries. Over 1,500 people have backed the bid by having their photographs taken in the 2017Hull picture frame. 20 local businesses have shown their support by becoming a 2017 ‘Angel’, pledging £17,000 each to help deliver the programme. Over 10,500 people and organisations have backed the bid through social media, which has extended to over 50 countries worldwide.

Hull is ready to deliver the title: the bid draws on a number of significant cultural venues opening in the city, including the new Hull Truck Theatre, the Albermarle Music Centre, Hull History Centre, and Fruit and other independent cultural businesses in the Humber Arts Quarter. By 2017, Hull will also be home to a new dance centre, a refurbished library and exhibition space at the University of Hull, improvements at the Ferens Art Gallery, and the C4DI Tech Campus which is at the forefront of the development of the Fruit Market.

Our vision is the Fruit Market becoming the place to be, for arts, culture, digital and technology, where people can work together, collaborate and grow successful businesses.

The vision for Hull UK City of Culture 2017: the city will be the venue, with themes that celebrate its unique qualities; Roots and Routes, Made in Hull, Freedom and Quirky. Artist-designed gateways, pictorial meadows and 1,000 trees planted will be part of the environmental legacy of Hull 365, enhanced year-round activity through Hull’s theatres, galleries and music venues. 25 festivals and major events; 12 artists’ commissions in 12 iconic locations over the 12 months; 15 national and international commissions and 52 site-specific commissions highlighting the extraordinary spaces and places across the city;8 major community participation projects rooted in Hull, including a spectacular opening ceremony involving 3,000 volunteers.

Great to see another local conference happening: do have a look!

You won’t have failed to notice the number of digital focussed events
that happen throughout the year but their locations make it difficult
for those of us who don’t live in the larger cities to attend. Tired
of not being able to see world class speakers without breaking the
bank balance we thought why not do our own? You are invited to the
North Yorkshire coast!

We want to provide a unique event that can inspire not only the
current and future generations, but all of those people that can
benefit from hearing these ideas. We also want to have a bit of fun
too so we will try to keep the event as laid back as possible and
naturally there will be sand, sea, ice cream and all sorts of seaside
frolics.

Event also includes Lunch, Free Business Cards from Moo.com and
discounted surf lessons. Also a potentially great after party!

Conference site >> click here now!
