Choosing a type of layout is one of those things in web design where flames are regularly thrown, so I'm putting on my best heat resistant suit and wading in. At Nomensa we have always used liquid layouts, as we looked at in part 1, liquid layouts have their advantages and disadvantages.

This post explains why our policy on layouts has changed.

After my post about WAI-ARIA document landmark roles, someone asked me why they were so helpful to screen reader users. After all, don’t screen readers already provide shortcut keys for navigating through web pages?

Quick navigation keys
Well, yes they do. Most screen readers use a wide range of quick navigation keys that let you move [...]

In a recent article from the Timesonline aptly named Gordon Brown silences YouTube critics by disabling viewer comments the issue of comment disabling was again brought to my attention. So, after some further reading I came across an article on the Web Worker Daily by Georgina Laidlaw that tackles the subject intelligently.

The Accessible Rich Internet Applications (WAI-ARIA) specification defines a set of roles known as document landmarks. They can be used to programmatically identify key areas of content on a page, which means they can be interpreted by access technologies such as screen readers.

Although the WAI-ARIA specification hasn’t been officially published yet, several screen readers have [...]

Ever wondered what “Vorsprung durch technik” means? If you remember the Audi adverts in the UK from the 1990s, you’ll know it stands for excellent design and precision engineering. It actually translates as “Advancement through technology”, a concept that neatly sums up Dennis Lembree’s work on Accessible Twitter.

Accessible Twitter is a wonderful example of accessibility [...]

This is the first of two articles aimed at explaining screen resolution and liquid layouts for non-developers / designers. As part of that I'll cover what the fold is, why it shouldn't matter, but often does. With the next article I'll release a little presentation anyone can use to explain these concepts.
