Pointless Points + Blog Changes!

1) So on my last 'Pointless Points' post seen HERE, I told you that Melissa Joan Hart from Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Anna Paquin from True Blood both came out and said they were pregnant. I thought this was supernatural baby overload and was totally blown away. WELL, it's only getting crazier. Sarah Michelle Gellar AKA Buffy the Vampire Slayer is pregnant too!! We now have a witch baby, a vampire baby, and a vampire-slayer baby!?
The only thing I can conclude is that Buffy's baby is going to try to kill Sookie's baby, unless Sabrina's baby can step in and mellow things out. I'm anxious to see how this turns out.

2) So, everyone loves Instagram and I just suck at getting on the bandwagon with these things. I had it installed on my phone for months before I ever uploaded the first photo(AKA the only photo). My biggest thing is that I don't remember to take out my phone and take pictures during awesome photo opportunities. For example, when I do a DIY, I forget to take a "before" shot. When I order an awesome food dish, I'll take a second to think "Wow, that looks super tasty!" but then I eat it before I think to take a picture of it to share with you. Another thing, some people post pictures of things that are kind of personal or intimate and I'm thinking, "Did you really during this special time(like a marriage proposal or something) say "Oh wait babe, let me take my phone out so I can get a pic of this for Instagram"...

3) Okay, there's some songs that I just feel like I did my time, I had to suffer while they were being played on the radio and everyone loved them, but now it's almost 5 years later and I shouldn't have to EVER hear them again. "Big Girls Don't Cry" by Fergie is one of them. Now, it's not that I'm a Fergie-hater. I'd much rather hear "Lady Humps" or "Lovely Lumps" or whatever it's called. But no, it is 2012 and I still hear this song on the radio about 6x a week. What the crap is going on? I feel like it's a conspiracy. The main reason I wish I had a CD player in my car, is because I'm tired of hearing songs like this and "Like a G6".

4) So, my car is 12 years old and has dings, scratches, and nicks all over it. Sometimes, I get a strong urge to hit things with my car. I've never been in a wreck and I've been driving for almost 8 years. I've been in 2 small fender benders though. Once, someone backed into me at a Taco Bell drive-thru but I was so hungry for tacos I just let them go. Another time I was listening to "Banana Phone", an extremely distracting song, while delivering newspapers and I saw a donut shop and accidentally got distracted even more and hit an old lady's car a little bit. I blame 'Banana Phone' and donuts. Anyways, the other day I was pulling into my driveway and my big plastic trashcan was off to the side and I purposely hit it. I just kept going and hit it. And it felt really good. Sometimes I get tempted to hit curbs or signs or people. I usually fight the temptations but I'm not going to lie. If it's something I know won't really hurt my car, I kinda hit it. Is that wrong?

5) The other day I found a white, not gray, hair. Then a few days later, one of my co-workers pointed out that I had ANOTHER white hair. Now, I've always dreamed of having white hair when I'm old. Gray hair is cool, but white hair is even better. My mom's whole side of her family went white in their twenties and she always warned me of that. As a kid, I was like "Cool! Like Steve Martin?!" It's just that I thought that I had more time. I feel like if I start going gray/white soon, I'm just going to dye my hair until my forties. I can't be a white headed girl in her twenties. I just can't.

6) I went to the zoo a few days ago, and while I was watching the lions sleep peacefully, someone drove by with rap music blaring loudly and woke them up. Now to be honest, our city's zoo is in the ghetto. It's so bad that when you give people directions you actually have to tell them, "You turn here and start driving through the ghetto. You're going to get scared and want to turn around but don't. You're going the right way, just a little further and then out of nowhere it will appear". Well, pretty much this point is just me feeling bad for the lions/other animals in the zoo. They can't even take siestas without rap music interrupting them. I'm pretty sure I saw one lion roll his eyes too.

7) I had an idea the other day to create an adult roller rink. A few months ago, I went to my neighbor's(9 yr old girl) birthday party at a roller skating rink. There was loud kids everywhere and Justin Bieber music playing. The thing is, I love roller skating! As a kid, I went every Friday and as an adult for some reason, I can't. If I went and tried to roller skate with all these kids it would be annoying, I'd get weird looks, and I'd probably trip on one(or trip one purposely) and get in trouble. Everywhere I go; kids are getting in my way. One time I went to an aquarium and I was trying to pet a stingray and these kids walked up and they and their parents looked at me as if I was supposed to be like, "Oh here ya go kid, I'm an adult so I can't enjoy petting a stingray. Please take my spot". I don't think so. I enjoy zoos and aquariums and roller rinks just as much as the next kid and I will fight for my right to not move out of the way for them. Anyways, I'm going to open a roller skating rink that you have to be 21 to enter, sells alcohol, plays awesome music, serves good food, you can gamble, has video games etc. ANOTHER example: When you go to GameStop or a video game store and they have a system set up with a demo game and there's some smelly kid standing there that you know has been playing for hours that won't let you have a go. Sorry, this point just turned into a rant about children.

8) I'm very lazy. One time I bought a bookcase from Walmart, took it out of the box, looked at the instructions, put it back in the box and brought it back to Walmart because it was too hard. True story. I got a vanity the other day and had to put it together and it took me an hour. The vanity part and stool was already put together. I just had to install the 3-panel mirror. Sad, right? I've actually already decided that when I have a baby, I'm going to buy a crib already put together like one from a thrift shop or something. I don't even care if it's 5 years old and doesn't pass safety regulations anymore.

9) This maternity photo surfaced the other day of Rachel Uchitel. Now, I know since she was one of Tiger Woods' mistresses I can't expect anything too classy from her, but she is not the only one guilty of this. What is with weird, naked, sexual looking maternity shots? I can kinda understand the whole wanting your bare belly showing, but really?! You're butt in a thong? Are you going to frame this and hang it in your house? I've seen so many inappropriate maternity shots from women wearing lingerie to being almost completely naked and the men kissing them and just really weird photos. Can we all agree to start taking classier maternity photos and not ones of you naked with a sheer sheet barely covering you?

10) Now, I honestly mean no offense to anyone with this point and I hope this doesn't somehow offend feminists or non-feminists or whoever you are. Lately, I've noticed something that kind of bugs me. I've noticed a lot of girls/women that are going straight from their parent's house to their husband's house. What I mean by this, is girls that live with their parents and are supported by them, then marry young and move into a house with their husband, therefore becoming supported by him. I believe every person should have a few years where they move out of mommy and daddy's house and live on their own. You get your own job and make your own money. You pay your bills and you don't rely on your parents or a boyfriend/husband to take care of you. That's how you learn independence and how to be self-sufficient. I've worked since I was 17 and had about 7-8 jobs. I pay my own bills and take care of myself. Sure, I don't have a lot of money left over every month, but I make it work. My parents want me to move back home(I live 2 hours away) but I won't. I've been in a relationship since I was 16 and he lives 10 minutes away in his own apartment. Yeah, it would make financial sense for us to live together but I don't want that. I want to have my time to grow on my own and learn about myself and my strong points and weak points. I just feel like every person, male or female, should have time in between living with their parents and living with their spouses, that they find out how hard life can be. They learn about the importance of money, they learn responsibility, they find their own independence, and they become truly self sufficient.

5 Golden Rules of Thrifting!

Hello everybody! Today I have Brennan from 'Wayward Girl' sharing her

"5 Golden Rules of Thrifting" with us!

I've been a thrifter since I was allowed to walk by myself to the neighborhood thrift shop down the street from my childhood home. I've always thought that anyone can put together a cute outfit with a bottomless budget, but it takes a true fashionista to be equally fashionable and only pay a fraction of a boutique ensemble.

That's why I've come up with my five golden rules of thrifting that you'll find below. All of them I've learned through my many mistakes and triumphs through many years spent amongst the racks of my favorite consignment shops.

1. Size Doesn't Matter

Not everything is going to be perfect when you go thrifting, that's the price we pay for amazing deals. Be flexible if something is too big, and remember the power of a good belt.

Also, remember that you have no idea how old these clothes are or what country they were made in so number sizes mean very little unless they're made from a brand you know.

For example, don't freak out if you're a size 4 and you try on a skirt that fits perfectly and also happens to be a size 8. No, you didn't gain two dress sizes in the past five minutes, it's probably just vintage and the sizes run smaller.

And by this, I speak from experience.

2. Don't Get Kitschy

It is inevitable that every trip to a thrift store will bring at least one hilarious, ironically amazing item that you will think is an absolute must-have. And yes, it's true, everyone needs an ironic wolf shirt or two in their closet, but keep your satire to a minimum.

Yes, that bedazzled fanny pack that's covered in a floral print that looks like it's straight out of a discount furniture store and has the phrase "I'm a Cougar" embroidered on the front is probably one of a kind.

But no, it is not worth $7.99, nor should it ever make its way into your closet.

3. See the Big Picture

This hearkens back to lesson number one: not everything will be perfect. But something ill fitting or too big is only a creative blessing in disguise, a diamond in the ruff, an unfashionable What Not to Wear contestant, waiting to be made over.

Remember that mom jeans become cute cutoffs

Big maxi skirts become belted sundresses

And even the baggiest t-shirt can be your new favorite crop top

4. Seasons Smeashons

This goes for all shopping, but most importantly for thrift stores, because you never know what you're going to find. Yes, it's true that you should wear season appropriate clothing, however there are no rules about seasonal shopping. If you see a woolen pea coat and fall head over heels in love but it just so happens to be mid-July, BUY THAT COAT. Things are cheaper off-season, you have less competition, and it just gives you something to look forward to.

5. It's Kinda Like Fishing

One of the most common things friends tell me is that they would go thrifting more often but whenever they do, they never find a single thing.

It's true, sometimes you go to your favorite shop, and can't find a darn thing, that's just the nature of the beast. Thrift store hunting is a complete crapshoot. Keep calm, and go in without any expectations of what you may find. Yes you'll have some bad days, but those will make the good ones all that much better.

Fella of the Week

I love Zach Galifianakis. He is hilarious, and strange, and weird, and odd, and funny, and bizarre, and ridiculous. Do you get the point? I love how he will cross dress for comedy and make himself the butt of a joke. If he is in a movie, it's automatically 10x better to me. My two favorite movies of his are Dinner for Schmucks and The Hangover.
His stand-up comedy is great, his skits on 'Tim and Eric
Awesome Show, Great Job!' are amazing, his "Between Two Ferns" videos on YouTube with different celebrities are awesome(originally from FunnyOrDie), and his beard is one of the bests. There is no reason not to love him.

Meet Barney!

So you already know about ChiChi, my best friend, sidekick, number one amigo. Well, I adopted a new dog a little over a month ago and I'm just getting around to letting you meet him.

Let me give you a little preface to the story. I work at a pet store and people drop animals off at the door, leave cats in the bathroom(yeah, it happened), leave animals in the parking lot, and pretty much just abandon animals. So, I foster animals a lot. A LOT. I have 3 cats of my own, one was found in the parking lot as a kitten almost dead with no hair, the other was a stray, and then the third is their child. I have 7 stray cats outside that I feed daily. I have ChiChi(who I adopted when I was 16) and now I have Barney.

Barney came to me from a redneck family that tried to feed him Everclear liquor to get him drunk, which can kill a dog especially one his size. They would kick him and were just bad people. So it's taken some time to get him to not pee on himself when you raise your voice, and to get used to other people(especially men). But now, he and ChiChi are BFFs, he's been sober since he came to me, and he plays fetch like a champ.
So, without further adieu: I give you Barney! (Named after How I Met Your Mother).

Movie Monday

So, I grew up watching the 1961 version of 'The Parent Trap' starring Hayley Mills(who is awesome). If you don't know the story, here is a summary courtesy of IMDb:

"Hayley Mills plays twins who, unknown to their divorced parents, meet at a summer camp. Products of single parent households, they switch places (surprise!) so as to meet the parent they never knew, and then contrive to reunite them."

Even though it's a little unrealistic, I love the whole story line. The best part of this movie though, by far, is the fashion and style of the early sixties. The hair is simple and classy, the dresses are so fitted and feminine, and the decor is perfect. There's vintage bathing suits, every scene filmed at the summer camp is hilarious, and each character is spot-on. It's a great summertime movie for kids and adults!

So, I've been using my camera more often lately. I have to take some senior portraits for a friend's little sister soon and I'm a little nervous, so yesterday me and my friend Courtney went and took some photos for fun. Courtney and I have been friends since second grade. We met on the school bus one morning while I was showing some younger kids how to draw puffy sleeves on a princess dress. Long story short, we lived on the same road growing up, were in Girl Scouts together for years and have been friends ever since. She's graduating college in May and moving off to go to a graduate program, so we had a fun mini-photo shoot yesterday. It's crazy how people move and people's lives change. You always know eventually it will happen, but there's always hope that things won't really change after all. Anyways, here are some of the photos we took!

Lady of the Week

Last Saturday while garage sailing, I had just finished listening to the "Shirley Temple" station on Pandora so I searched for a "Sound of Music" station. Lo and behold, there was one and it has been being played non-stop since. When I shower, I'm listening to "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" and when I'm getting ready for work I'm listening to "My Favorite Things". The station is pretty much perfect and it even throws in some Mary Poppins songs too. So you shouldn't be surprised that Julie Andrews is my 'Lady of the Week' this week. I love her voice and I think she sings some of the catchiest tunes. She's also super pretty, very classy, and always has a sparkle in her eye. I'm serious. Like sometimes her eyes just sparkle or glisten and it's kind of weird, but it's okay.

Garage Sale Finds!

I go garage sailing every Saturday but I usually never think about or find time to share what I found. But I decided since thrifting/garage sailing is such a big part of my life and this blog, I'm going to start showing you what I find each week. I can't guarantee what day I will share on, but sometime that week I'll take some photos. These are from this last Saturday!

1) I'm a sucker for handmade pot holders. I have a bunch of them.
2) Yes, that is a monkey painted on a rock.
For 25 cents, how could I not buy that?!

I got these 3 vases for super cheap and they're so delicate and pretty!
I had been keeping my eye out for some.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who listens to AM radio
and loves Dave Ramsey?
Also, I still haven't read The Help so I was
stoked to find that! Plus, The Giving Tree
will make a great addition to my little library.

I got this metal trunk for 75 cents! It's scratched
up but so old that I wouldn't dare repaint it.
I think it would be great for using
as a sort of "hope chest".

I got everything but the books from the same old

lady's house. She's been having a garage sale every

Saturday and bringing out new stuff every weekend.

Each time I go, I find new awesome stuff.

This trunk must have belonged to her husband

because it has a man's name in it. She's probably

in her 80s so I don't know how old this would be.

She's so funny though. When I bought that monkey

rock, she said "Oh, you're buying ol'ugly are ya?"

That's one of my favorite things about garage

sailing is getting to look into someone's life

and see what kind of things they owned. I can't

wait till Saturday to see what she has then!

P.S. I've decided to also start sharing pictures
of my collections! I have a fair amount of vintage
dishes, old thermoses, and I can't wait to share
with you my collection of Russ Berrie figurines!

Movie Monday

When I went to the IMDb page for Matilda, I couldn't help but laugh at the description:

"Story of a wonderful little girl, who happens to be a genius, and her wonderful teacher vs. the worst parents ever and the worst school principal imaginable."

While that pretty much sums it up, Matilda was about a lot more than that. Matilda was about the love of books, reading, and the power inside all of us. Now while I wish I had telekinetic powers like Matilda, I mainly mean the power to be strong and true to yourself and overcome whatever obstacle you may face. Using your telekinetic powers to eat cereal like a boss would just be a plus.

P.S. If you're a big Matilda fan like me, here's a video that Mara Wilson(Matilda) filmed when she was on the movie set in 1995! It's really cool and interesting!

Well, Wilson actually has a blog where she writes and she is a very humorous and wise girl. She even clears up the misstated facts from the "interview" that made her look bitter and ungrateful. Well when I was preparing for that post, I decided to do absolutely no work on a Sunday and instead bug all of my co-workers. I walked around with a clipboard and asked them this question:

The surprising thing was how hard it was for some people to come up with answers. My problem was picking just five, but some people had trouble coming up with more than two. Isn't that strange? Fella of the Week

I love The Office and have seen each episode, probably about 18 times. Last night I couldn't sleep so I watched eight episodes in a row. It worked like a charm. I love Creed, Jim+Pam, Kelly, and Dwight. But what would The Office be like without Steve Carell to play Michael Scott? Well, since he left the show I think we know the answer to that. Steve Carell was the glue holding that show together and I don't see it lasting much longer without him. It's still pretty funny, don't get me wrong, but Michael Scott was ingenious. Steve Carell as a whole, is a great actor though. He can be hilarious or he can be dark and eccentric. Next week's 'Movie Monday' is actually going to have him in it and it's one of my favorite of his roles so I won't spoil it just yet.

Facts about Steve Carell:

Carell is a failed mail carrier. He said he quit because he was “very, very bad at it.” He once wanted to be a lawyer. But when an entrance application asked him why, he couldn’t answer the question, so he chucked the idea.
Carell made his film debut in 1991 with Curly Sue, a comedy starring Jim Belushi. (I've seen this movie like 5 times and I never knew that!)
For The 40-Year-Old Virgin‘s infamous chest waxing scene, Carell actually had his hair ripped out because he wanted his reactions to look as real as possible.
He improvised the kiss between him and Oscar on The Office episode, "Gay Witch Hunt". He also currently plays in a men's ice-hockey league in LA.
Steve is hitched to Saturday Night Live alumnus Nancy Walls, who he met when she attended an improv class he was teaching. Nancy, with whom he has two children, later appeared with her hubby in The Office as his realtor and love interest Carol Stills.

Pointless Points

I decided to make my last "Pointless Points" post seen HERE a kind of bi-weekly/monthly thing. I've been known to rant a lot and I'm not going to lie, I really kind of enjoy it. Also, my coworkers say I remind them of the SNL skit 'Really!?!' with Amy Poehler. You don't know what skit I'm talking about? Okay, you can watch one HERE. Anyways, some topics might be rants and others might just be odd things I notice around my life. Either way, they are all 'pointless'.

1) I do not use Pinterest correctly. I feel so bad because almost every time I check my email, someone new is following me on Pinterest. I use Pinterest by dragging the pictures I like into folders I have on my desktop. I don't re-pin them. And the bad thing is, a lot of my old schoolmates follow me and they're probably thinking "Ooh I bet Arielle will re-pin some cool stuff". Nope. So save yourself some time and don't follow me on Pinterest. You will only be disappointed.

2) Okay, so this picture was floating around Facebook and different places on Easter. My only thought when seeing this was "Who has the time to go out and play with roadkill?!" I imagine 2 rednecks being like "Bubba! You stay here with it and make sure no one hits it again or the buzzards don't get it. I'll go home and fetch Mary-Ann and Billy-Bob's baskets!" Then they continue to break eggs and set up the amazing photo opportunity...

3) So last week at work, I was inexplicably tired. I had woke up at 5am the two mornings before that so I thought maaaybe that had something to do with it. Let me preface by saying, I'm not one of those people that take naps or gets tired too much. I wake up a 7am or so on my own will and am one of those "annoying morning people". But I do get tired extremely early. Like staying up for New Years is the biggest challenge in my life. Well anyways, I kept telling my coworkers I felt like deliriously tired and apparently I was slurring. I'm sure customers assumed I was drunk. End of story, I later that night realized I took some new allergy medicine that said on the back "may cause extreme drowsiness". Moral of the story: I worked a 9 hour shift while pretty much drugged on PM medicine. That's gotta be harder than childbirth, right?! (I kid, I kid).

4) Every time a captcha pops up, I die a little inside. I hate having to prove I'm not a robot. I know what you may be thinking, "Arielle, it only takes like 3 seconds, are you that lazy?!" Yeah, I really am. Don't get me wrong, I'll still love you and your blog and I'll still comment. I'm just entitled to rant about it a little.

5) Do you ever not buy something when you're at a thrift shop/garage sale and then you regret it for months? Well like 6 months ago at a garage sale, I passed on buying a huge collection of Goosebumps books. I thought about it hard, but assumed I'd find another chance to start up my own collection. Wrong. I haven't found any cheaply priced Goosebumps books since. Biggest regret this year.

6) The other day while browsing Netflix, I noticed there was a "Soulja Boy" documentary. Yeah. First of all, I hate things that are purposely misspelled. Secondly, Soulja Boy has a documentary?! Do people actually watch that? Aren't there better people to make a documentary about? What are you documenting? How crappy his music is?! I don't even.

7) So, Melissa Joan Hart and Anna Paquin are both pregnant right now. It was pretty much released into the news on the same day. Witch babies and Vampire babies are coming into this world. Everyone else was separating these people from their characters, just being happy for them and their husbands. I on the other hand, am thinking how lucky the supernatural world is to get these babies.

8) The other day I bought this 1950s thermos to add to my thermos collection, and the people at the thrift shop put orange price stickers all over it. Not just one. They went price sticker crazy. So when you try to take them off they peel the paint. Don't you hate when you find something awesome and old and somebody ruined it with stickers?! It should seriously be punishable by law(or death).

9) While looking at old pictures, I notice everyone is wearing hats. Men, women, kids, dogs. People nowadays don't wear hats that often and it kinda bugs me. Fedoras don't count so don't even go there.

10) Someone please explain to me who/what "One Direction" is and how they got so popular overnight?! I went to bed one night and woke up the next day, hearing people singing "You don't know you're beautiful" and talking about these boys and posting about them non-stop of Tumblr. Where did they come from?! I feel lost.

Movie Monday

So, this blog is no stranger to Molly Ringwald and it's finally the time to share The Breakfast Club. This movie is amazing x10. So many great lines and the characters are all so strange and relatable. Adolescence at it's best.

P.S. Is anyone else kinda upset that detention at their school
wasn't this fun? I remember one time I got Saturday detention and I had to pay 10 dollars and their was a cop supervising. We definitely couldn't have gotten into any of these fun shenanigans.

Where I Live - Part One.

A few weeks ago, I was bored so I decided to take my camera and walk around the downtown area of my city. A lot of the buildings are abandoned, the brick is chipped and the paint is peeling, but there's still beauty around to be found. I decided to break the pictures up into two posts since there was a good amount.

I found a random fake bird that someone attached
to this cool fence. The "Cotton" sign behind just added the
perfect touch to the picture.

These 3 window arts I found were super cool.
My fave is the guy in the middle
but the one on the left was cool up close too.

I found this old empty space that was so pretty to me.
I love how the light is shining though the broken glass and
how the light hits the wall.

I love wall murals, especially old ads.

The forest graffiti is so pretty, I wish someone hadn't spray painted over it.

Lady of the Week

I've featured her in two 'Movie Monday' posts: Casper and Now and Then, so it's about time I choose Christina Ricci as my 'Lady of the Week'. She's transformed into young/oddball characters such as Wednesday Addams(who is going to have a whole post dedicated to her), a haunting love interest in Sleepy Hollow, a lost train-wreck in movies like Black Snack Moan, a retro flight attendant in Pan Am, ect ect. I could go on and on, but instead just take a look at her IMDb page HERE. She is dark and quirky and stands out among so many cookie-cutter actresses. Although my favorite movies of hers are the ones from her younger years, I still love her as much as ever and look forward to seeing how she changes throughout her roles. Ricci will always be one of my favorite actresses, just because she isn't afraid to explore her limits and step out of her comfort zone, if she has one. She's been described as precocious and outspoken and I can't think of a better way to describe her.

Movie Monday

Growing up, I shared a bedroom with my two older sisters. Whenever I would watch a VHS tape too many times, they would hide it from me. This movie was no exception. I know there's many versions of Annie, but my favorite is the 1982 film. Maybe it's because I can't get enough of Carol Burnett, Tim Curry, and Bernadette Peters. I have two copies of it on VHS, ya know, in case one copy gets messed up. I have the soundtrack on vinyl, which I know every word to every song. I have it "instant que'd" on Netflix, and I've already watched it but I'm keeping it up there for safe-keeping.
