scrappy and soho

I'm not sure if we've covered this before, but Little Scrappy, the pug who was abandoned on our doorstep, is pretty much completely deaf. He spends a lot of time just trying to figure out what's going on. He's also old and arthritic, so sometimes when he thinks that one of us is upstairs, he'll stand at the bottom of the steps, looking up at the second floor, and crying. The funny part of it is, often, we're not upstairs at all. So, my picture of the day from Friday was when Scrappy was waiting for someone to come down and pick him up to carry him upstairs, except, I was right there next to him. I was able to sneak up on him and get this photo, before he realized that I wasn't up there.

On Saturday morning, we drove into Manhattan to pick up a couple of boxes from David's office. I took this picture out the front window of our car, as we were driving through SoHo.

that groundhog lied to us

Remember when that groundhog saw his shadow a few weeks ago and said we'd have six more weeks of Winter? Well, I'm not sure how that was going to happen, considering we never had any winter in the first place. We had a big snowstorm in October (!), but we were out of town for that one. Since then, it's snowed exactly twice in Brooklyn, and it melted both times.

In the fall, we planted these ornamental cabbages, which we'd hoped would give us a little bit of color over the winter months. Though, honestly, I don't see the point of ornamental cabbages, unless, of course, you're going to make ornamental cole slaw. But even though it's still February, the tulips along our walkway are already pushing through. So, that was my picture of the day, yesterday.

Here we go! Friday night, we finally went to Talde, the restaurant that Top Chef contestant Dale Talde opened in Park Slope. Holy Smokes, was it good. I took a picture of the pretzel chive pork dumplings, and as food photography goes, it's not bad at all. If you want a more complete run-down of their menu, check out the opening review that appeared on FiPS (the foul-mouthed blog that graciously accepts contributions from me).

We hadn't seen our friends Kevin and Jim in a while. But they invited us over for dinner on Saturday, and their apartment (which we also hadn't seen) had this patio terrace with a stellar view. I took this pic from their terrace, looking down 7th Ave. Incidentally, David's picture of the day for Saturday was the opposite direction.

One of our alsome wedding presents was this incredible paella pan. On Sunday we had friends over to watch The Amazing Race, and David made delicious paella. I took this pic while he was browning the chicken. If you want to see the finished product, it was David's pic of the day for Sunday.

Monday was President's Day, and you'd think that I'd be enjoying a three day weekend (I hadn't had one in a while), but no such luck. I had a meeting in Austin, Texas on Monday night, so I wound up having to fly. I took my daily picture from the frequent flyer lounge at LaGuardia.

Breakfast Tacos. That is all. Thank you, Tuesday.

I flew home Wednesday, and even though I was tired, I trekked into Manhattan to attend a charity event organized, in part, by my dear friend Jarret. The event benefitted Bailey House, and it's a very worthwhile cause. You should give them money. Any-to-the-who. I got in to Manhattan a bit early, on a warm spring day. (In February, but whatevs. We didn't have winter this year.) The light was beautiful, it was really warm, and I had one of those moments when I looked up and thought to myself, 'How incredible it is that I actually live in this exciting, wonderful city?' So I took a picture of the Flatiron Building.

So, Valentines Day was this week, and our HR department got me a heart-shaped bakery cookie. It's not chocolate chip, but it'll do. I actually had some business juice on Valentine's Day, but that was after no booze for a solid week.

On Wednesday, my spouse and I went with ninedaves to see Seminar, on Broadway. We waited at the stage door, and I snapped this pic, while we were waiting for Alan Rickman and Lily Rabe to sign Playbills.

I worked from home on Thursday, and actually got some stuff done. While catching up on American Idol, Huckleberry climbed onto the back of the sofa and decided to fall asleep on my shoulder. So, that self portrait is my picture for today.

citrus press

After getting married last year, we really didn't need any more kitchen gadgets, but one thing we didn't get was a citrus press. So, I went online a couple of days ago and ordered this one. It arrived this morning at work, so I took a picture of it, and that's my photo of the day.

I also used it to make dinner tonight. Here's what I did.

I took some cod filets, and sprinkled them with chili powder, oregano, salt and pepper. I popped them in a 450 degree oven for about seven minutes.

Meanwhile, on top of the stove, I melted 2 tablespoons of butter, added a quarter teaspoon of cumin, and the juice of one lime, using my NEW CITRUS SQUEEZING APPARATUS.

I drizzled the butter mixture over the cooked cod, and served it. It was really good.

Geez. Now that I think of it, I should have taken a photo of the fish I made, and used that for my photo of the day.

Oh, well.

Saturday, I found these really cute cucumbers at Costco, and they were the perfect size for making pickles. And, we had some leftover jalapeños that we didn't use for making chili for the Superbowl. So, I whipped up a couple of jars of pickles, since I'd done it before, and knew how easy it was.

Scrappy decided to help.

legal streaming and downloads of best picture nominees on video

Most of the nine films nominated for Best Picture are still in theaters, and haven't yet been released for streaming, DVD/Blu-Ray, or legal download. A few nominees are available for small-screen viewing, and I've seen all of those, at this point.

Moneyball

I just so happen to be one of those gays who likes baseball. I think baseball represents all of the good things about masculinity (strength, concentration, leadership, focus), without any of the worst (violence, specifically). I love how the game relies heavily on individual strengths, but ultimately requires teamwork for success. And that last bit is exactly what Moneyball is about.

So, I liked this movie, even though it didn't exactly communicate those ideas in a way that was particularly sophisticated and layered. For that, I'd turn to Richard Greenberg's play "Take Me Out," where the character of Mason, a gay accountant becomes a convert to baseball. Mason says that "baseball is better than democracy -- or at least democracy as it's practiced in this country -- because unlike democracy, baseball acknowledges loss." He talks about the meaning behind the rituals of baseball, and it's a really, really beautiful monologue. If you've never seen the play--look for a production near you. For my money, it's even better than Moneyball, which was pretty good to begin with.

The Tree of Life

I tried to watch this on an airplane, but I got really bored. I made it through, but I wasn't in the mood for the experimental segments of the movie, and I really felt like the ending was lame.

The Help

Okay. Maybe this movie is cloying as hell, but I gotta tell you. I loved it. Mostly because I love good acting, and this movie had some tremendous, genuine, moving performances. Of the first three Best Picture nominees, this was the one that I enjoyed the most. So, I'm willing to overlook the fact that it's a movie that's supposed to make white people feel good about a really ugly time and place in American History. I liked the movie, because the acting was outstanding.

Beginners

Though it's not nominated for Best Picture, I watched this film because Christopher Plummer's been winning loads of awards for his performance, and I'd heard really good things about it. It's a terrific movie, and it's available for viewing on the small screen, and you should really, really give it a try. It's a beautiful film, with some lovely, nuanced performances.

How to Download or Stream Movies Legally

Theft of digital content is a problem for the people who work in the media industries. Music, film and television programming is one of the few areas where the United States enjoys an actual trade surplus. The jobs in the industry are good, well-paying, and (in many cases) union jobs, and I really do believe that most people--given the opportunity--are willing to pay for quality entertainment.

The problem is, there are a lot of sites out there that look legit, but which are based off-shore. You don't want to be giving your credit card number to a Russian criminal syndicate, or someone in China that's going to sell you an unauthorized copy of a movie. guess what i've done for the past two days?

You'll never believe it, but I'm traveling again. Back to LA. Uh-gain. So, my picture of the day for Wednesday was the back of the airline seat in front of me. That's why you keep coming back to this blog, to see me document my endless travel for my job.

On Thursday, I woke up in my hotel and was thinking about how, eventually, we're going to put a bathroom in the third floor of our house, now that we're done with our earlier bathroom renovation. And I was thinking about how I kind of like one of the features of the bathrooms at the Beverly Hilton. They've got these two frosted glass doors along one wall, and the space between those doors is another little partition of frosted glass. Behind one door is the shower. Behind the other door is the potty. They've also got a little TV by the sink so you can watch the news while you brush your teeth. So, for Thursday, I took a photo of the bathroom in my hotel room.

Also, for what it's worth, I haven't had a drink since Monday, so I've got a couple more days to add to my "no drinking" tally. I've been under way too much stress lately, and I'm trying to do what I can to keep it together. I don't know if it helps to abstain from business juice, but that's what I'm doing, just the same.

two days of pictures

I didn't get the picture I took posted yesterday, so I've got two pictures of the day to post today. On Monday, we went to the Plaza for a schmancy work function and I took the photo above.

Tuesday was not as much fun. I'd been putting off a doctor's appointment for a while, to deal with my hypertension, and they needed to check my kidney function and draw blood. Well, I didn't give them enough of a sample in the cup the first time, so I had to sit there and drink water until I had to pee again.

I drank too much water in too short a period of time. It's called water toxicity or hyponatremia, and it can kill you in its most severe forms. I don't know that I was on the verge of dying, but I felt really, really sick for the rest of the evening. It didn't help that I'd only had a small cup of oatmeal to eat that moment. If David hadn't come home to take care of me, it'd have been so much worse. I'm such an idiot. Instead of drinking two glasses of water and waiting it out, I drank much more than that, quickly, and felt like I was going to die. And I did it IN THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE. They really shouldn't leave me unattended with an instruction like "drink a lot of water and we'll be back."

So, by the time I started feeling better, I hadn't taken a picture for yesterday. I decided to snap a picture of one of the dogs, who'd been cuddling with me all night to make me feel better.

making pizza for an unattended superbowl party

Yesterday was the Superbowl, so I figured it was a great time to check off my "make pizza from scratch" item from my 101 Things list. A couple of days earlier, I invited a few people over, thinking it'd be fun to have a little Superbowl party. Of course, I was planning to watch the Superbowl the gay way--indulging in carbs until Madonna performs, and then putting in a DVD of "The Help."

I used my new bread machine to whip up a batch of dough, and then I let it rise, then punched it down and kneaded it, then let it rise, and punched it down again.

My big problem was rolling it out. The pizza stones were heating in the oven, and I needed to figure out a way to transfer the pie to the stone. My dough kept sticking to the cutting board. Eventually, after ruining one assembled cheese pizza, I managed to slide the pies off of a well-floured silicone chopping mat onto the hot stone in the oven. But it took a while to figure out how to make that transfer.

The pizzas turned out well. I overcooked the plain cheese pizza a bit, but David's mushroom-olive-sausage pizza was terrific. And I was able to make my favorite pie--pepperoni and banana peppers. So, that last pizza is going to be my picture of the day.

Here's the problem, though. Everyone I asked already had plans for the Superbowl by the time I decided I wanted to have people over. Boo. Oh, well. More pizza for us, and one less thing on my 101 Things list!

götterdämmerung, at the metropolitan opera.

I made additional progress on my "see the complete Ring Cycle" item last night, when we went to see Götterdämmerung at the Metropolitan Opera. Last year, I saw the first opera, Das Rheingold in the Wagner extravaganza in an HD simulcast at BAM. So, now I've seen the first and the last operas in the cycle. And knowing how it ends, I can't wait to see what happens in the middle, because the plot of these operas continues to be completely and totally ridiculous.

Here's what happens in Götterdämmerung.

The opera opens with these three Norns, who are weaving a magic braid. What's a "Norn," you ask? That's a really good question. All I can tell you is that they do macrame, and if their yarn breaks, they lose everything and have to descend to the underworld. And, since that's exactly what happens, after the magic weaving breaks, we never see them again. So why do we open with this? That's another good question.

Suddenly, we're taken to the top of a mountain where Brünnhilde has been imprisoned in a ring of fire, because she did something that Wotan didn't like in one of the operas I haven't seen yet. I'll fill in that gap, later when I get around to seeing #2 and #3. So, Brünnhilde is in love with Siegfried, because he walked through fire to make sweet love to her, so the two share this tender moment where he give her his cursed ring (Siegfried doesn't know about the curse, by the way), and she gives him her favorite pony, which in this production, is made out of grey fiberglass, and looks really, really lame. So, having given each other these gifts as a sign of their love and commitment, Brünnhilde sends Siegfried off to do "heroic deeds."

Siegfried's first "heroic deed" is to get engaged to another chick, but I'll get to that in a minute.

After he leaves, Brünnhilde gets a visit from her sister, Waltraute, who tells her that the whole family is going to shit, and that it's all because of the cursed ring. Basically Brünnhilde used to be a goddess, before she got punished, and all of the other gods and goddesses (her parents, aunts and uncles) are in deep shit. Waltraute tells Brünnhilde that if she just throws the cursed ring in the river, everything will be fine, and we can all get back to normal. Brünnhilde refuses, because that ring was a very special gift from her boyfriend and how dare you.

Lemme just say this. If Brünnhilde had only listened to her sister, she could have saved everyone a whole lot of trouble, and this opera would have been about four hours shorter.

He shows up at the door of these folks who are Gibichungs. What's a Gibichung? Who knows, really? So, the Gibichung people have just decided that they're going to become rich and famous by convincing Siegfried to marry the Gibichung sister, Gutrune. Only problem is, Siegfried is a big hero, who fought a dragon and won lots of cursed gold (including the ring he gave Brünnhilde), and since he can have his pick of women, Gutrune figures she doesn't have a chance unless she slips Siegfried a roofie. Only this is a magical roofie that allows him to be conscious enough to do "heroic deeds" but causes him to completely forget about the fact that he's already married to Brünnhilde.

The Gibichungs also want their brother, Gunter, to marry Brünnhilde. Siegfried thinks this is a great idea, because he doesn't remember that Brünnhilde is already married to him, and since he can walk through fire, he makes a blood pact with Gunter Gibichung, and agrees to disguise himself as Gunter to go win Brünnhilde's heart.

How's he going to pass himself off as Gunter, you ask? Well, it just so happens that he's got this golden dinner napkin that he took from the dragon cave full of cursed gold. It was the only other thing he took, except for the ring. The Gibichungs are a little bit surprised that Siegfried was such a fuck-up that he'd leave all of that gold just sitting in a cave, unguarded, but they explain to him that he can put the golden dinner napkin on his head and it will change his appearance to look just like Gunter!

So, that's what he does. Siegfried walks through fire, disguised as Gunter, and Brünnhilde is very confused. Siegfried rips the ring off of Brünnhilde's hand, switches places with Gunter, and then uses his magic dinner napkin to head back to Chez Gibichung while the real Gunter and Brünnhilde follow him back.

That's when everything goes to shit. Brünnhilde sees the undisguised Siegfried there, and he's making out with Gutrune, and she's pissed off, and Siegfried swears on someone's sword that he's never done the nasty with Brünnhilde, and when Brünnhilde sees the ring that "Gunter" stole from her on Siegfried's hand, she starts to think that something might be up.

Eventually, everyone turns against Siegfried, because they think he's a liar, and Brünnhilde tells everyone that Siegfried is invincible because she put spells all over his body, except for one place--his ass. So, if they attack him from the back, they can kill him. They decide that they should all go hunting the next day, and that's where it all goes down.

So, there's a lot of other stuff wrapped up in the plot. Basically, this dude named Hagen is orchestrating the whole thing so that he can get the ring back (because his father made the cursed ring in the first place), but the gold was stolen from these three river mermaids, and they want it back, too. And the river mermaids try to talk Siegfried out of the ring, but that doesn't work, and Siegfried drinks this potion, and suddenly remembers who Brünnhilde is, and it all gets messed up, and a bunch of people die, including Siegfried, with the cursed ring still on his hand.

So, they take Siegfried's body back to the girls, and when Brünnhilde gets close to the body, Siegfried's hand with the ring on it, just shoots up, like he's possessed or something. If I were there, I'd have screamed "ZOMBIES!" and run like shit. But Brünnhilde decides to build a funeral pyre, she promises the ring to the mermaids, and she gets on her fiberglass pony and rides right into the pyre where Siegfried's remains are burning.

At this point, in the production, we're supposed to get this very "Jerry Bruckheimer" ending. According to the synopsis, she denounces the gods, throws herself in the fire, the Rhein overflows its banks, destroys all of the Gibichungs, Hagen gets dragged into the river by the mermaids, and in the distance, we see Valhalla and the gods, engulfed in flames.

In the Met's new production, it is not nearly that awesome. The funeral pyre looks really good, but the rest of it was just plain cheesy. The image of the gods burning at the very end had these statues where the heads popped off with talcum powder spraying everywhere. The fiberglass horse was a fucking joke. The Rhine overflowing and killing everyone? Didn't happen, as far as I could see.

I'm not one of those people who's really critical of the design of this particular Ring Cycle. Maybe it's because I've got nothing to compare it to. But for something that I found visually interesting, for the most part, it was profoundly disappointing to have it end with a big fat fizzle.

That having been said, I liked the opera. It was six hours long, but I stayed awake for the whole thing. The music was gorgeous, and the singers were all phenomenal.

the sense of an ending

I finished my fourth novel on my project to read all of the short-listed Booker Prize books. This time, I read The Sense of an Ending , by Julian Barnes, which happens to be the book that won the prize this year.

I tend to like books that are plot-driven and well-written. This book is not what I'd call a "page-turner," and yet, I really, really loved it. It's not a long or difficult read at all, but some of the ideas expressed are so thought-provoking, and all of it is beautifully written, that I'd call this one of the most compelling reads I've had in a long time.

The book is the story of Tony, a middle-aged British guy, who inherits £500 from someone he's only met once before--the mother of his college girlfriend. The book explores the complexities of how Tony's memories of missed opportunities and youthful intemperance are filtered through his middle-aged recollections.

It's a beautiful, interesting, and very quick read.

In other news, I only took one photo yesterday, so that automatically becomes my picture of the day. I met my dear friend Flora for a birthday drink after work, and on the way home in the cab, I realized that I was gonna need a picture. I snapped this out of the front of the cab window...because there was something outside that I wanted to remark upon. Now, of course, I can't remember what that was, and the picture is so blurry, it hardly matters. To some extent, the blurred nature of the photo and my memory of why I took it meshes with the idea behind the Barnes book.

I wasn't even drunk, by the way.

You may recall that last year, I decided that singing back-up at a Barry Manilow Tribute Concert was way better than singing jazz at an open mic night.

Well, I must not have embarrassed myself too badly last year, because the lovely and talented Colleen McHugh invited me back to sing the oohs and aahs (and a few other things) at her one-night-only nightclub show, "Hail, Barry."

For what it's worth, Colleen does a different show every month, on a one-night-only basis, and they're all hilarious and fun. So, if you find yourself in or near New York City when she's performing, you should definitely check it out. And say "hi" to me, because, while I'm usually not on stage, I'm almost always in the audience.

I worked all day yesterday, (yet another weekend of working out of town...) but during a break in the meeitngs, I stepped out front and it was gorgeous, warm, clear and sunny. I took a picture of the palm trees and tried to enjoy a few minutes of warmth and quiet before heading back into the meetings. And that was my pic of the day for yesterday.

I'm back in LA this weekend, for work, and I was completely and totally exhausted when I arrived, that I couldn't conceive of leaving the hotel for dinner. I went down to Trader Vic's and ordered a drink and some sushi, and was enjoying some peace and quiet, until this guy and his extremely busty trophy wife showed up across the bar from me. The guy was extremely loud and went on and on about how he was here for Dan Hilton's birthday party.

I typed Dan Hilton into the Google Machine, and I think he was talking about the head of the Canadian Conservative Party, who's birthday is next week. Though I can't figure out why a Canuck Politico would be having his birthday party poolside in Beverly Hills.

Anyway, the guy left after making a big announcement about how he needed the bartender to break a $100 bill, so that he could leave him a $10 tip. (I think he mentioned "taking care of" the bartenders or something like that.) Then, after he left, he showed up a few minutes later and ordered two Mai Tais, and said, very loudly, "Mr. Hilton would like to have a Mai Tai with me."

Our guests stayed over with us, and Huckleberry waited patiently for them to emerge from the guest room. And that was my picture of the day.
