Are you ready for Memphis in May, Hunter’s Trace? Starting at the beginning of next month will be a series of events here in Memphis that will draw in lots of residents and visitors who are looking for the opportunity to get together and listen to music, participate in educational programs and enjoy yummy food.

One highlight of the festival is the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. Since we’ve got lots of hungry Memphians out there, the event, which will take place at Tom Lee Park, will pit hundreds of teams against each other for a chance at $100K in prizes (and bragging rights, of course). As I mentioned, there are scores of hungry residents and, as such, the event will also include grilling booths featuring all types of pig embellishments. Enjoy the food of booths called Slab Yo Mama, Swine & Dine and other creative names. Grill masters may even dress up with pig snouts, hooves, wigs and pig ears! They will compete in the annual Ms. Piggie contest and will show off their vocal talents.

Tickets for the event, which runs from May 17th-19th, are available online at Ticketmaster for $8 per day if purchased in advance or $9 on the day of the event. VIPit Passes cost $395 for admission for all 3 days including come-and-go privileges.

Any of you go to the movies regularly? I’ve been slipping but I’m starting my comeback as a movie buff, recently seeing The Hunger Games, 21 Jump Street and, most recently, This Means War (an older one but still fun). I enjoyed all 3, and there are several new films coming out that I’m anxious to see. If you haven’t seen a movie in awhile, take a look at the movie listings for Malco Bartlett Cinema 10, under 10 miles from Hunter’s Trace, below as well as a review of We Bought a Zoo, which got mixed reviews. While the movies showing at this theater are a little bit older, they’re still enjoyable, especially for those who haven’t been to the theater lately:

I found Bruce hobbling along GE Patterson, on the sidewalk just South of The Blue Monkey, just after I took my fiance to work at about 6:45am on Thursday, March 22nd. He was going to run across the street but saw my car and hobbled back. I instantly stopped and parked in right of the apartment/lofts along GE Patterson. I found a granola bar in my car and started breaking it up, hoping that he would hear/smell that I was pulling something out. He noticed it very shortly after I tossed a piece on the sidewalk. Then, a dog named Porter and the owner, Rivers, came running by. Bruce wouldnt come up to me but was interested in the other dog. As Rivers and I discussed the dog, I told her that I would grab some more food and come back to find him.

After searching a little while with some turkey meat, I saw Rivers waving her arms in the Farmers Market Parking Lot, near the Train Station. I drove over there to find that Rivers had brought Bruce a bowl of dog food. He wasnt really interested in us getting closer, and he wasn’t interested in my leash. Therefore, I laid a trail of turkey meat leading into my car. Bruce hobbled right in, and became very frightened when I shut the door. From there, we took him to Grace Animal Hospital.

While there, he received all the shots he needed.He is heartworm negative, and is fully caught up on his vaccinations. He was neutered April 4th< and is ready to be someone’s happy boy!.

Bruce is well aware of a couple commands including the following: Sit Down Stay (this one needs a just bit of work but he has been getting better) Lets Go to him that always means that he needs to run to his leash to go outside.

This is a very sweet boy who has warmed up quickly to people.

Give Your Chairs a Makeover with Little Green Notebook

Have you ever been in a position where you shopped on the internet for something, be it furniture or shoes, that just didn’t look or feel like you thought it would? Disappointment inevitably kicks in, right? Well, don’t freak out just yet. You actually don’t have to return the item, at least in the case of chairs, because you can always do some simple things to add that extra something and make them more desirable. If you’ve gotten stuck with cheap-looking chairs, check out some chair redesigning tips below, courtesy of Little Green Notebook, and see if adding or subtracting something would make you like (or even love) them:

Jazzing Up Cheap Chairs

I am not a fan of cheap upholstery. My philosophy is buy the best upholstery your budget can afford and then DIY/rework/save up for the other items in a room. If you know how to upholster, vintage furniture is a great route. They just don’t make things like they used to, so nowadays you really get what you pay for when it comes to new upholstery.

I don’t know what I was thinking then a while back when I ordered some cheap chairs on a whim. I had been shopping for a new pair of chairs for a long time, but everything I liked was at least $1500 per chair with my discount (like the Odette chairs below from MGBW). We’re thinking of moving in September so it just didn’t make sense to shell out thousands for chairs right now. Plus, I didn’t want to wait two months to get them.

Then last month we hosted five dinner parties and I was desperate for chairs. I looked on Overstock and Wayfair when I was up against a wall and saw these chairs. They were on sale for $275 each and I had a 25% coupon code and there was free shipping, so I went ahead and just bought them. I liked the shape of the arms (they sort of reminded me a little bit of the Odette chairs) and I liked the nail head trim. And they came in just two days.

When they arrived I was a bit disappointed. They weren’t as nice and crisp looking as the photos and they just felt blah. Rather than deal with returning them (and since we *really* needed extra seating), I decided to jazz the chairs up.

I went to my local fabric store (JEM) and bought six yards of black twill tape that was about the same width of the upholstery nail.

I used these handy staple removers to take out all the old upholstery nails

I actually thought the brushed nickel was pretty and would have looked great with the black twill tape, but I have some polished nickel lighting nearby and it was all looking a little matchy-matchy. So I bought some brass nails and brass caster cups for the front feet.

To get started with the new trim job, I just rolled the end of the twill tape under:

And used the old nail hole to make things really easy.

The only real trick to keep in mind is to pull the ribbon tight so there is no gaping between the nails. I also went back and tapped everything in with an upholstery hammer.

To keep the corners smooth, I just folded the ribbon in under itself and put the nail into the folds.

I added brass caster cups from Lee Valley but the legs ended up being a little wider than I expected so I had to cut away some of the wood so the casters would fit right. It was a pain! Totally recommend double checking your dimensions before adding casters!

Here’s the front view of the finished chairs. It’s not a drastic change, but I think the trim and casters help the chairs look a little less cheap.

I like them from the side best.

They’ve grown on me. I like the shape of the arms a lot and I think the new contrasting trim highlights the shape. So even though I broke my own rule about not wasting money on cheap upholstery, I think I’m pretty happy with these chairs for now and they fit in well with the mix of furniture styles I have in the space.

54th Annual Memphis Greek Festival Coming Up Next Month

Celebrate Greek culture during the 54th Annual Memphis Greek Festival

Get ready, Hunter’s Trace, because the 54th Annual Memphis Greek Festival is coming in just over a month! On May 11th and 12th, you can enjoy a celebration of Greek culture, from food to dance and more.

The festival will include live performances and dance lessons for free. In addition, there will be food service. If you buy your tickets by May 5th, you will get a Greek meal included in the price of your ticket, which will be $15. This will include a Greek salad, Greek entrees and side dishes, which you can get inside the dining hall or get prepackaged food through the drive-thru.

The festivities will run from 11 am-10 pm, with food service until 9 pm. Admission is $3 for ages 12 and older, $1 for ages 6-11 and ages 5 and under are free. These prices do not include food.

Get Active and Test Your Skills During Urban Dare Memphis!

Flying Saucer Draught Emporium is calling! They will be hosting Urban Dare Memphis this Saturday. You can find the Emporium at 130 Peabody Place here in Memphis – under 20 miles from Hunter’s Trace and well worth the drive!

This part running/part trivia quiz and skills challenges will test 2-person teams to solve clues to find checkpoints, take team photos at each, use public transport and call friends to help solve clues. In this event, smarts can beat speed. Similar to the popular show “The Amazing Race,” there will be puzzle completions, eating something, etc. and getting your “passport” stamped at each checkpoint.

The event should last about 2 hours for the winners, with most teams finishing under 4 hours after completing all dares and challenges. It will begin at 12 pm and will cost $90 per team of 2. 3 person families can register for $120 and families of 4 for $160. Kids need to be 16 or younger to participate.
