Robert Bellm paints vibrant images from nature, calling the eye-pleasing mix of natural shapes with manmade forms "organic technology."

Matt Furie creates richly detailed and hyper colored illustrations and paintings that reflect the creative cross breeding of The Neverending Story, unrestrained imagination of The Muppet Show, and humor of ALF.

Jay Howell creates a strange yet beautiful world where limbs lack joints, all colors are neon, and every shape is elongated and wavering.

Ben King is a young, upstart artist from the Bay Area whose illustrations reflect a unique perspective on mainstream celebrity and videogame culture, among other topics.

Aaron Martinez is a Los Angeles based artist, who creates somber yet thoughtful monochromatic images, and is currently designing for Element Skateboards.

Sidney Pink is a Japan-based illustrator who was nominated for the 2008 GEISAI Museum 2 Jury Awards.

Albert Reyes is a prolific artist from Los Angeles whose style reflects the grittiness of the streets fused with the refinement of classical portraiture.

A reception featuring many of the artists will be held from 6:30 to 10:00 on Saturday, November 14.

The exhibit will include a new body of work comprised of 12 x 12 inch tiles, made of uniformly poured latex paint, and wall mounted suede paintings.

Through a reinvestment of paint with illusionism, the tiles (which serve as receptacles for a variety of painted abstract marks) posit non-objective abstraction as something capable of fluctuation between the supposedly respective realms of high art and commercial design. In this context, the assimilability of certain forms seems to have been prefigured by their lack of representation. In juxtaposition with the suede paintings, whose surfaces might bear traces of similar patterns, these forms are meant to seem highly disposable.

Jancar Jones Gallery
965 Mission, Suite 120
San Francisco, CA 94103
415-281-3770
www.jancarjones.com

They have come together in an unprecedented union of talents that began with a group showing of their works in Seattle in the fall of 2002 at the famed Showbox Theater. Here, the seeds of PNE were sown. The now-historic two-night showing of their works included performances from numerous bands that played in their honor including solo sets from Doug Martch from Built To Spill and Dave Mercer from The Shins. The immense display of over ten thousand square feet of rock posters and music was greeted with a massive turnout and outstanding reviews.

Hampton, Emek and Rogers each have been working in the field since the early ’90s. Though relatively young, they have over 30 years of professional experience between them. Collectively, they own over 2500 images that have been used in work for a who’s who of rock and music ICONS. Each artist brings his own significant fan base to the table. Like the Impressionists of the late 19th century, PNE realized that there was strength in numbers: they could make a real mark together as a united front. They draw upon many artistic influences, especially those of the Explosionists. Melding high-impact imagery with solid content, the Explosionists were known for their works of controversy. Decades later, the Neo-Explosionists continued this tradition, taking it a step further by creating new mediums for their work to flourish.
www.pne3.com.com

Tara McPherson is an artist based out of New York City. Creating art about people and their odd ways, her characters seem to exude an idealized innocence with a glimpse of hard earned wisdom in their eyes. Recalling many issues from childhood and good old life experience, she creates images that are thought provoking and seductive. People and their relationships are a central theme throughout her work.

Tara exhibits her paintings and serigraphs in fine art galleries all over the world. Named the crown princess of poster art by ELLE Magazine, she has created numerous gig posters for rock bands such as Beck, Modest Mouse, and The Melvins. Her array of art also includes creating toys with companies like Kidrobot, Dark Horse, and Toy2R, painted comics and covers for DC Vertigo, advertising and editorial illustrations for companies such as Widen+Kennedy and Spin Magazine, and teaching a class at Parsons in NYC.

McPherson’s art has been included in books such as Lost Constellations; The Art of Tara McPherson Vol II (Dark Horse), Lonely Heart: The Art of Tara McPherson (Dark Horse), Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall (DC), The Art of Modern Rock (Chronicle), Illusive 2, Illustration Now! (Taschen), SWAG and SWAG 2 (Abrams), and more. Her art has also been featured in the Oscar Award winning film Juno.

Tara was born in San Francisco in 1976 and raised in Los Angeles. She received her BFA from Art Center in Pasadena, CA in August 2001 with honors in Illustration and a minor in Fine Art.
www.taramcpherson.com

Cole Gerst/Option-G is an artist, illustrator, designer and animator based in the Mount Washington area of LA. He is the founder and art director of option-g visual communication. Gerst began his career in the music business and continues to design cd covers and posters for such bands as The Shins, Modest Mouse, Beck, Elliot Smith and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

While still painting and designing, Gerst has branched out into directing and animation. His “Yung Yeti” cartoon airs on the Sundance Channel later this year and a pilot for another network is in the works. To top it off Gerst has two monthly comics in the LA Weekly, “The Good Life City” and “LaLa Land”.

In his spare time you can find Cole tearing up the hills of LA on his 1978 Puch Free Spirit or hanging with his 2 German Shepherds.
www.option-g.com

ZOLTRON is an enigma. A self proclaimed 70’s teen idol, Zoltron’s wave hairdo and unique California accent epitomized a certain level of cool, which inevitably paved the way to his success as a graphic designer, poster and street artist, pseudo- photographer and vinyl sticker aficionado. Zoltron is the founder and creative director of the self-titled design company as well as the notorious silkscreen sticker printing company, Sticker Robot. Zoltron’s artwork has been shown across the country, has been published in national and international magazines and was once called “Pretty Heavy” by a transient who was urinating on a dumpster as Zoltron walked by.

DAVE HUNTER is an Alumni of The California College of the Arts in Oakland and the Center for Electronic Arts San Francisco, Dave Hunter has been involved in the Bay Area rock art/music scene for 23 years. Hunter first surrounded himself in the company of Rock Posters and the legendary Fillmore/Avalon Ballroom artists who created them while organizing and installing Rock Poster shows at the Psychedelic Shop and Artist Rights benefits in San Francisco beginning in 1986. Dave went on to to work in the Bill Graham Archives and was in charge of framing and installing poster art at The Fillmore, The Warfield and Shoreline Ampitheater music venues.

From these Rock Art rich backgrounds Dave began to design and produce rock art for Bay Area Bands, Record Labels and Venues. Eventually getting back to his roots in printmaking, Hunter has created hand silkscreened posters for the likes of Metallica, Sly & The Family Stone, Gov’t Mule, The Decemberists, Throbbing Gristle and Les Claypool – some of which are featured in the new Goldenvoice San Francisco poster series. Dave Hunter currently lives and works from his art studio in Fairfax, Ca.
http://gammalyte.com/

Inspired by punk rock subcultures, these are the days is the artist's first institutional commission in the United States.

In 2007, Arthouse invited Stokes to create a new film project with ZieherSmith acting as co-producer. these are the days is the result of Stokes' close work with communities connected to Austin's music scene and his extensive research into anti-establishment musical genres, particularly punk rock. Investigating the dichotomies expressed within earlier and later punk communities, his research ultimately led to the creation of the dual channel film installation, an archival installation exhibition exclusively at Arthouse, and the publication about both.

The first film features footage from a specially organized punk show, staged by Stokes, at the Broken Neck, an alternative venue in Austin and filmed by renowned cinematographers Lee Daniel and P.J. Raval. The second film, created in response at a recording session at Austin's Sweatbox Studios, depicts a makeshift band's musical reaction to the event footage. A reversal of roles between audience and performers, the work examines the concepts of inspiration and response. Punk as it was then and as it is now, different yet the same--these are the days.

Matt Stokes' artistic practice is marked by anthropological enquiry and an interest in happenings or informal movements that bind people together. Taking a variety of forms -- from organizing events and assembling archives to making films and creating sculptural installation -- Stokes' works are often collaborative in nature and sometimes take place outside the traditional gallery space. Music subcultures have been central to the development of his most recent projects, which have focused on their ability to shape lifestyle, beliefs and create community. Northern Soul, acid/house and black metal are among the genres of music he has explored, poetically revealing music's intrinsic ability to create fellowship through devotion or the quasi-religious experience of dance.

these are the days was first presented in 2009 at Arthouse and at 176 / Zabludowicz Collection, a major new contemporary art space located in London. The London show also featured The Gainsborough Packet (2009, co-commissioned by 176 and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art), which will screen in the back room of ZieherSmith. An editioned dubplate featuring music from both these are the days and The Gainsborough Packet is also available. The Abake-designed catalogue will be first released at the opening and includes documentation of both the film piece and of ephemera from the 1970s and 1980s related to the punk, post-punk, and DIY movements in Austin, material that was presented as an ambiguous archive at Arthouse.

Matt Stokes was born in 1973 in Penzance, England and currently lives in Gateshead, England. He is the 2006 recipient of the esteemed Beck's Futures Prize, awarded by the ICA, London and is currently on the shortlist for the 2009 Northern Art Prize. In 2009, he was also included in solo and group exhibitions at the Baltic Centre of Contemporary Art, Newcastle, and the Lentos Museum, Linz, Austria, among other venues. Special thanks to Arthouse, the Arts Council England, Michael A. Chesser, Johnna and Stephen Jones, and Julie and John Thornton.

ZieherSmith
516 West 20 St
New York, NY 10011
(p) 212-229-1088
www.ziehersmith.com
info@ziehersmith.com

Julia Bryan-Wilson
Book Launch
Saturday, November 7, 2009, 5-7 PM

Printed Matter, Inc. is pleased to host a book launch for Art Workers: Radical Practice in the Vietnam War Era by Julia Bryant-Wilson, a new book investigating a historical moment defining the role of labor in art systems. Please join us along with the author on Saturday, November 7 from 5-7 PM. Printed Matter is located at 195 Tenth Avenue, between 21st and 22nd Street, in New York City.

Art Workers: Radical Practice in the Vietnam War Era examines the efforts by a group of American artists and critics during the late 1960s and early 1970s to employ the term “art worker” as a tactic for shifting the boundaries of creative labor. The book features extensive case studies of four core participants of the Art Workers' Coalition and the New York Strike Against Racism, War, and Repression: Carl Andre, Robert Morris, Hans Haacke and Lucy Lippard (one of the founders of Printed Matter).

In her introduction, Bryan-Wilson writes:
“The moniker art worker gave left-leaning artists a collective identity to rally behind. That identity also brought a sharp focus to their frustration with the war in Vietnam and the increasingly repressive tactics of the U.S. government. The term elaborates the dense meanings embedded in the phrase art work—that is, it spells out the relationship between art as an object and as an activity. It also asks, implicitly: What work does art do? How does it put pressure on systems of representation and forms of signification? How does it intervene in the public sphere? How does it function economically; how does it structure relations; how does it put ideas into circulation?”

Published by the University of California Press, Art Workers: Radical Practice in the Vietnam War Era is 296-pages in black-and-white with 12 full-color plates. Issued as a hardcover, the book retails for $39.95 in store and online. Please contact us to arrange for signed copies for those unable to attend the launch.

Julia Bryan-Wilson is an Associate Professor of Art History and the Director of the Ph.D. Program in Visual Studies at University of California, Irvine. As a frequent contributor to Artforum, she is especially committed to feminist, queer, and collaborative art. Her writing has also appeared in Bookforum, Cabinet, Camera Obscura, Frieze, and Modern Painters, among many others.

Printed Matter Inc. is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1976 by artists and art workers with the mission to foster the appreciation, dissemination, and understanding of artists'' books and other artists'' publications.

Printed Matter, Inc. has received support, in part, through grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Milton & Sally Avery Arts Foundation, The Cowles Charitable Trust, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the Erste Foundation, The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, The Gesso Foundation, The Horace W.
