Disclosure: The Capsule USB microphone is loaned by NZXT.

About the NZXT Capsule…

USB microphones are great for most users. Samson, Blue Yeti, Audio-Technica and Rode makes some of the best USB microphones before they were cool. While these still dominate the usual choices, many others such as HyperX, Razer, Elgato were able to get some piece of the USB microphone pie. You’d reckon many other companies would join like how we’d see companies rushing in for the USB headset market.

And hence we have the NZXT Capsule Cardioid USB microphone. The microphones come with functions that you would normally see in many USB microphones with their own design philosophy. So we get to explore how good is this microphone and if it’s something you’d like to buy.

The NZXT Capsule comes in a very big box with more than satisfactory protection for the microphone inside, almost similar to Razer Seiren Pro.

The stand does feel it weighs more than a microphone. This is appreciated considering you wouldn’t want the microphone to tip over and unlike boom arms, desk stands are not clamped. The NZXT Capsule is a cardioid microphone, though it’s strange NZXT didn’t include the polar pattern of this microphone’s responsiveness.

At the time of uploading this video, the NZXT Capsule has a new firmware update but doesn’t mention what fix it provides.

Apart from a generously long USB type C cable, you get a threaded mount and a clamp. The thread is attached to the bottom of the microphone and the clamp coves the section of the mic when the desk stand is removed.

Nvidia announces two new RTX 30 series variants at CES 2022- the RTX 3050 and the RTX 3090 Ti graphics cards. The RTX 3050 uses the GA106 core like the RTX 3060 but obviously with some chunk processors and cores disabled. The RTX 3050 will be ready for purchase from January 27th onwards.

Specification: RTX 3090 and the RTX 3050

The RTX 3090 Ti model implies it maxed out the Ampere GeForce silicon. The GPU uses GA102 core with all 10,752 CUDA cores, 84 RT cores AND 336 Tensor cores fully enabled. The RTX 3090 Ti also uses the new 16-pin power connector which has a typical board power requirement of 450w, 100 watts more than the RTX 3090. oof!

The RTX 3050 has 2,560 CUDA cores, 8GB GDDR6 memory on a 128-bit memory bus and a reference spec GPU boost up to 1780 MHz. This has a typical power draw of 130w and reference spec uses a single eight-pin PCIe power connector. By the looks of it, Nvidia is probably aiming for this card to spiritually succeed the GTX 1650 in some respects while providing entry-level RTX and DLSS functionality.

Why so much power?

The CUDA core count increase is not much compared to its predecessor. But one of the reasons for the higher power draw could be because of the higher memory bandwidth. While it still uses 26GB GDDR6X memory, its bandwidth capacity is increased to 21 Gbps against 195 Gbps on the RTX 3090. The other reason could also be the GPU boost. It would be interesting to see if non-reference models will use the same connector and the specs it provides.

MSRP? LOL

While MSRP doesn’t really limit the pricing in the real world thanks to the low availability/ high demand/ scalping (even by distributors such is the case in India), the RTX 3050 GPUs start from US$249/ IN Rs. 22,250. Non-reference editions are available at the time of launch as respective AIBs have already rolled out press release updates. The RTX 3090 Ti MSRP pricing is not fixed, nor its retail availability is announced at the time of writing.

One of the prolific HW leakers 9550pro posted an image of a potential NUC 12 Extreme Edition variant with an LGA socket. If it passes through and is available on retail, this will be the first NUC provided with an LGA socket. Typically, NUC PCs have BGA processors which are soldered on the motherboard PCB. The introduction of an LGA in NUC Extreme gives the ability to select the type of CPUs you would need.

Since its an LGA 1700 socket, this process support Alder Lake CPUs and Arc Alchemist discrete GPUs. Ofcourse, nothing is fixed. But the inclusion of LGA sockets over BGA processors implies more PCIe lanes, providing much higher bandwidth required for graphics cards. We’ll just have to wait if CES 2022 gives more information. With the inclusion of LGA sockets, one may see this device supporting a range of Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9 range of CPUs. It is unclear if these units will also include support for the future 13th generation Raptor Lake CPUs. Naturally, there would be limited compatible CPUs due to the accompanying power supply. Most likely LGA sockets will only be on the NUC 12 Extreme Edition variants. But its highly likely NUC 12 Extreme Edition will also have some BGA variants.

What we can see from this PCB shot is there are 2x DDR4 SO-DIMM slots and a PCIe 4.0 NVMe slot. Most likely there might be DDR5 slot variants at some point in the future.

Doing it after its cool

While having LGA in NUC 12 Extreme Edition would tempt a certain audience to purchase the unit, having mini PCs with LGA sockets is nothing new. ZOTAC has been doing it for many years, though many of such mini PCs do not provide a PCIe socket for graphics cards. Minisforum has been doing this for a while, starting with AMD CPUs.

While one may want to end 2021 with a bang, this is probably the last thing on their mind. Rightfully so, but measures have been taken to recall such motherboard. Such is the case with the ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Hero motherboard.

The story is usually on social media and in the respective forums. Users pointed out their Z690 motherboard refused to POST, therefore creating a POST code 53. According to the code, this indicates RAM issues. However, upon closer inspection, burnt components were identified specifically the one located next to the RAM slots. While some of these malfunctions were quiet, some reported audible pops, a pungent smell of a burnt component in the memory subsystem.

It was identified by resident overclocking and PC hardware expert Buildzoid that two MOSFETs on the ASUS ROG Z690 HERO were installed backwards. One of the main functions of this MOSFET was to deliver 5V, including DDR5 memory modules. Therefore it’s extremely important that respective owners check their motherboards by not using them.

Asus responded after gathering enough information and said the following:

“To our valued ASUS Customers, ASUS is committed to producing the highest quality products and we take every incident report from our valued customers very seriously. We have recently received incident reports regarding the ROG Maximus Z690 Hero motherboard. In our ongoing investigation, we have preliminarily identified a potential reversed memory capacitor issue in the production process from one of the production lines that may cause debug error code 53, no post, or motherboard components damage. The issue potentially affects units manufactured in 2021 with the part number 90MB18E0-MVAAY0 and serial number starting with MA, MB, or MC.

You can identify your part number by referring to the product packaging:

As of December 28, 2021, there have been a few incidents reported in North America. Going forward, we are continuing our thorough inspection with our suppliers and customers to identify all possible affected ROG Maximus Z690 Hero motherboards in the market and will be working with relevant government agencies on a replacement program. Thank you so much to everyone for your patience and support while we are working through the replacement program.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact ASUS customer service. Best regards, The ASUS Team.”

ASUS also opened up a webpage so that you can identify affected motherboards via serial number and proceed with the recommended steps.

While it is extremely rare to see this happen at an assembly, what’s important is the solution for a replacement. What’s also appreciated is that this recall will also be made via the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. This is very appreciated when we think about recall announcements by other manufacturers not too long ago.

Not surprisingly, PC component manufacturers branch out to test their ‘unchartered territories’- NZXT being one of them who usually has limited lineups. Surprisingly, they started branching out with USB microphones tastefully called ‘Capsule’ and a boom arm accessory. Whether it’s a good microphone or a hard pill to swallow (no pun intended) is something we’ll know during testing.

NZXT did make some comparisons with other well-known microphones around this price range but truth be told spec comparison for a microphone/ headphone/ speakers don’t help a lot apart from giving a general idea.

Personal pre-testing opinions…

Personally, it’s strange to see a microphone with a 120$ MSRP but a boom arm costing 90$ as an accessory. While I am not necessarily shooting the potential better quality, manoeuvrability, and ability to house heavier mics, NZXT ideally should have started off with a simple boom arm that compliments NZXT Capsule- both in function and pricing.

What did catch my interest is the mention of the words ‘internal shock mounting’ but NZXT didn’t illustrate how its implemented internally. It is also interesting because usually, shock mounting is a component that rests between the 1/4″ stand and the microphone, traditionally. And traditionally, some USB microphones provide an internal pop filter. NZXT claims to provide high-quality audio while minimizing background and put a comparison chart against similarly priced USB microphones. But as we all know, USB microphone specifications don’t help a lot since it’s something you would like to hear.

NZXT and other USB microphone makers should upload some audio (typically recorded via OBS or Audacity) on their website rather than Youtube (and any platform) since it has its own compression. USB microphones cater to many users- from bare basic use for Discord voice chats or any video conferencing- to in-game voice chat and even while streaming, podcasting or making videos/voiceovers.

Disclosure: This kit is purchased from Amazon US and not loaned/ provided by Crucial

About the elusive Crucial stuff…

Crucial and Crucial Ballistix SSDs & RAMs are owned and made by Micron, a tier 1 NAND supplier for multiple manufacturers. Traditionally, Ballistix sub-branding usually appealed to high-end hardware enthusiasts. As time passed, this included marketing towards gamers when RGB became a norm. Still, non-RGB is also widely appreciated, now than before. Almost every memory maker has a sub-variant that’s widely purchased. These sticks are low profile, passively good looking and with different colours with a much wider kit configuration, latency and timings.

Interestingly, these RAMs are made in Mexico. The location of manufacturing and assembly don’t define the end product’s quality as long as standards are maintained. But it reflects the decentralization of manufacturing and assembly to other countries apart from China, Taiwan or the United States.

About these Crucial Ballistix DDR4 kit…

I am testing the Crucial Ballistix 16GB (2x 8GB) 3600MHz CL16 (BL2K8G36C16U4W) DDR4 Memory Kit. This is a kit with two sticks using Micron NAND, XMP 2.0 and guaranteed compatibility with both AMD and Intel platforms. These kits are 2x 8GB DDR4 PC4-28800 configuration- a 3600MHz kit with 16-18-18 latency timings in its XMP profile. Such RAMs are usually purpose-built and usually, manufacturers provide compatibility with both CPU platforms with no hassle.

Usually, the memory kit packaging is pretty standard which is enough to protect the RAMs during transit with additional packaging from the shipper. The pack labels the necessary details, emphasizing compatibility with both Intel and AMD platforms. This specific kit is the BL2K8G36C16U4W DDR4 kit. Each stick is 8GB, totalling up to 16GB DDR4 with 3600MHz. There are variable coloured heatspreaders, much like how Corsair Vengeance LPX and HyperX RAMs. These heatspreaders are aluminium plates usually sandwiched against the memory kit with very strong adhesive. As we all know by now, they are less for heat spreading and more for branding and aesthetics.

As you see, these memory kits are low profile. Manufacturers try to provide some design aesthetics on the memory kits as much as possible. All respective companies try doing it in any way they can. These Ballistix looks clean. It is not that I get to talk about it, but I prefer the matte, slightly textured finish over the smooth semi-glossy finish on HyperX Savage kits. It is not something you would make a purchase decision on, naturally. Just an astute but useless observation you get to see as a reviewer.

Disclosure: The MAG Z590 TORPEDO is provided by MSI.

The story between a Torpedo and a Mortar’s shell…

MSI is traditionally known to provide a good motherboard in the mid-end segment irrespective of the chipset. While it seems I am generalizing it, the MSI Mortar series does enjoy a relatively good run of good motherboards for a while.

But this is a new series- Torpedo.

With the new chipset, MSI revealed a new series called Torpedo. Usually, this motherboard of this type would be called Tomahawk, judging by its lineup. With the Z590 chipset, it’s the Tomahawk WiFi and the Torpedo with no BT+ WiFi support. Except for the colour of the heatsinks and two of its DIMM slots, it is practically the Mortar without the name. Even the MSI’s manual is the same for both Mortar WiFi and Torpedo except for the WiFi+ BT M.2 offering. It would be interesting to see how MSI differentiates the Mortar and the Torpedo series. But as far as the Z590 is concerned- this is it!

The MSI MAG Z590 TORPEDO provides plenty of expansion options adequate for most mid-range end users and gamers. It’s an ATX motherboard with four DIMM slots and plenty of M.2, PCIe and SATA ports. Apart from the value, this motherboard can provide judging by its looks and feature list, what’s important is the future readiness. MSI must have assessed that providing the native chipset options is more than enough.

About the MSI MAG Z590 Torpedo Motherboard…

The MSI MAG Z590 TORPEDO is made for the LGA 1200 Intel Core i5/ Core i7/ and Core i9 11th generation Rocket Lake-S processors, depending on the pricing against the currently dominating AMD Ryzen platform. Motherboard combos play a vital role in decision making with the CPUs. This is not an exception. While you do not get the WiFi option in this, you do get PCIe 4.0 lane support with the 11th gen CPU, Type A on the rear and front- and a decent amount of USB ports.

The Intel B560 series and 10th generation CPU is considered to be a pretty good deal for some users. One of the 10th generation drawbacks is the lack of PCIe 4.0 lanes. The 11th generation Intel Rocket Lake-S having 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes and the 10th gen has 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes. Each M.2 slot uses x4 bandwidth. Usually, the motherboard uses the PCIe lanes from the chipset. It works via a switch that detects the CPU and allocates the PCIe 3.0 lanes from the chipset.

Therefore naturally, you will assume there would be step-down support for M.2 slots with PCIe 3.0 lanes when the 500 series motherboard is paired with an Intel 10th generation CPUs. However, some motherboards do not have switching support. Since these motherboards have at least two or more M.2 slots, lesser PCIe lanes would affect somewhere. In this case, the second M.2 slot. That was the case with the B560M-A Pro, B560M Pro and the B560M Pro-E. Two of MSI’s motherboards have the first M.2 slots exclusively for PCIe 4.0 lanes with the 11th generation CPUs, but provide PCIe 3.0 lanes on the second and the third slot.

Why on these B560 motherboards? Its likely MSI didn’t provide switches for the PCIe 3.0 to keep the costs of the motherboard down.

Disabled ports for older gens, not a new drill…

These are usually mentioned in manuals, irrespective of the manufacturer, model and the platform. But it does get lost in fine details. This was no different from the time some M.2 slots on older generation motherboards used SATA instead of PCIe lanes. Therefore, one or two SATA ports is disabled if the M.2 is used- and vice versa. One of the implementations on the 11th generation (though not a selling point) is the 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes from the CPU. While it doesn’t make any difference on currently available graphics cards, it does provide ample legroom for mid to high-performance PCIe 4.0 M.2 drives. It’s a question of which M.2 controllers can take advantage of it.

An eagle-eyed source spotted a Gigabyte X570S pre-production motherboard that doesn’t have a chipset fan typical of all X570 motherboards. According to one source, we could see a Zen 3 Refresh lineups, codenamed ‘Warhol’. But at the time, it’s uncertain if these chips are retail ready if true. The X570S, however, is a thing.

Would we see AMD X570S motherboard lineups from respective AIB partners? It’s coming, for sure! There are times such products are pushed out at the last moment with certain optimizations. But sometimes they’re ready enough to be mass-produced but for reasons, it gets pulled down. Hence my scepticism about Warhol CPUs. It’s the first time AMD (and others) experiment, optimize and refresh with different SKUs and naming scheme. For example, legend has it that AMD originally may have planned to call X470 as Z490. The existence of these motherboards was found in certain markets, again from Gigabyte. It was later changed to X470 for reasons we may not know (except it look a little petty to match Intel’s numbering scheme). X570 is the successor for subsequent Ryzen CPU releases.

That one annoying fan in the X570 motherboards…

The reason why X570 needed a fan irrespective of the motherboard make is that it just takes too much power and dissipates heat to require a fan. Alas, these are usually brushless fans using sleeve bearings in a worst-case scenario. This wasn’t emphasized at the time since B550 and X570 were the first motherboards to have PCIe 4.0 divided between PCIe x16 and 1st M.2 PCie 4.0 slot. Intel did launch the new Z590 motherboards with 11th generation Rocket Lake-S CPUs. But unlike the AMD platform whose 16 PCIe 4.0 lanes came from the chipset, the twenty PCIe 4.0 lanes comes directly from the CPU.

The "S" in "X570S" simply stands for "silent" just so everyone knows.

This is a new more efficient X570 chipset, not some preparation for a "Zen 3+."

Furthermore, I suspect people (including me at times) have been overhyping the possibilities of "Zen 3+" a little... https://t.co/QEpWAQhBu2
— Moore's Law Is Dead (@mooreslawisdead) April 6, 2021

The S probably stands for “Hope” in the sense that the chipset is passive, and hence Silence. I am sure everyone, including AIB partners, would like this fan business to just blow away. Even MSI said this is something nobody wants, but it was needed on the X570 chipset. It would have been nice if AMD did this a lot sooner than later. We’ll never know if this was a knee jerk reaction to the Intel Z590 chipset. Or merely a coincidence.

Gigabyte’s X570S Variants

Gigabyte submitted eight motherboards to the European Economic Community (ECC) for clearance. These would be called AORUS MASTER, AORUS ELITE AX, AORUS ELITE, AORUS PRO AX, AERO G, and GAMING X with X570S nomenclature. It’s likely other AIB partners would have variants as well. But for now, we know about the Gigabyte X570S motherboards.

When the RTX Voice was launched, Nvidia said this featured needed Tensor cores which were only available in RTX GPUs. At the time RTX 20 series graphics cards were launched at a price that was once seen as premium. But the feature’s effectiveness was a good perk for streamers. Atleast that’s how the paint was supposed to dry. That reasoning was as solid as GLADos’ promise to give you a cake, in the end. News of RTX Voice modded utilities came out, enabling the dynamic real-time noise cancellation support on GTX GPUs. This did not make a good impression on Nvidia as it looked the company was making things up on the fly to get people to buy an RTX graphics card for this feature.

The green chip maker did argue that this would put more load on the graphics card than it would on an RTX GPU (RTX 20 at the time this was announced). Be that as it may, it can work well with GTX GPUs while gaming and streaming. This looks like Nvidia’s way of saying let bygones be bygones- and here’s the official support.

Name Change? The future of future GTX GPUs?

Normally you would like to see ‘RTX’ in RTX Voice to be changed due to this extension. But we don’t know if Nvidia (and AMD Radeon) would release graphic cards with DirectX Ray-Tracing support. Time will tell. But for those who have GTX cards capable enough to game and stream/ record in-game gameplay, here you go!

Nvidia Broadcast Utility

The RTX Voice is a part of the Nvidia Broadcast utility which is a series of apps for in-home livestream studio. This part of the application is famously known to effectively provide a clean voice to OBS by filtering out any background noise using Nvidia’s proprietary AI. RTX Voice was the first to be released, eventually including virtual background with no green screen and Auto Frame support which uses the webcam’s crop and zoom feature to follow your head movements automatically.

If you wish to download this, you can do so from here. Nvidia also provided a setup guide for RTX Voice.
