RESIDENT EVIL 4: AFTERLIFE In The Works

It’s no real surprise to hear Paul W.S. Anderson reveal his intentions to bring back Alice and Umbrella’s greed for a fourth “Resident Evil” flick. But if he couldn’t get it right after the first three, what makes us think he’ll nail it on the fourth try?

In spite of what any of the talent involved in Resident Evil: Extinction told us during the press tour (mostly, “this is the final chapter”), the film left the door wide - and we mean WIDE open - for a fourth installment.

Late last year, Paul W.S. Anderson revealed he was indeed writing another film. Capcom was getting involved. Everyone, as he said, was “excited.” Well, we’ve just learned from a studio insider that Sony is looking to get Resident Evil: Afterlife into theaters by September 17, 2010. That’s according to an internal memo circulating through the offices there.

Who knows. Maybe Anderson really will get it together this time around and considering the potential of the third film’s ending (legions of cloned Alices) then I guess there’s a chance for something cool. I’ll remain skeptical in the meantime.

I’m willing to give most sci-fi movies a chance, and while “Surrogates” looks like a mash-up of “The Matrix” and “I Am Robot” it’s still got Bruce Willis going for it.

THE INFORMANT Trailer - THE INSIDER Meets Funny

I really didn’t know what to think of Matt Damon’s film “The Informant” when I first heard about the based-on-a-true-story flick. Someone should have mentioned this was going to be a comedy, a pretty funny looking comedy at that. I really thought we were getting yet another boring whistle-blower movie like “The Insider.” Definitely not like that. And hey! There’s Joel McHale!

The government decides to go after an agri-business giant with a price-fixing accusation, based on the evidence submitted by their star witness, vice president turned informant Mark Whitacre (Matt Damon).

The Informant rats you out in theaters on October 9, 2009

Guy Pearce Joins Katie Holmes In DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK

Guy Pearce never seems to get any screentime despite his consistently strong performances. Good news though for his fans with the word that Pearce is signing on to join “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.” It’s a remake of a 70’s made-for-tv movie. Um, wait, it gets worse before it gets better. He’ll be costarring with Katie Holmes. The good news? Guillermo del Toro will be producing. Phew…

Guy Pearce is in final negotiations and Bailee Madison is set to star with Katie Holmes in “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” Miramax’s supernatural thriller being directed by Guillermo del Toro protege Troy Nixey. Del Toro is producing with Mark Johnson.

“Dark” is based on a 1973 ABC telefilm about a young girl who moves in with her father and his girlfriend and discovers they are sharing the house with demonic creatures.

Madison will play the girl, who discovers the creatures and is fascinated by them — until they prove dangerous. Pearce will play the father, an author frustrated by his daughter’s tales of monsters, not believing her even when his girlfriend (Holmes) backs her.

I do enjoy me some cheap scare and thrill movies, so “Dark” sounds right up my alley. No word yet on when it’d be release, but production is set to begin next month in Australia. The location works well with Del Toro in neighboring New Zealand as he works on “The Hobbit.” Sweet.

FX Announces Plans For Its Fall Schedule

Recently FX has managed to outshine its parent network, Fox, when it comes to delivering quality series. Other than “Fringe” I don’t know what I’ll be turning to Fox to watch, but FX is filing its rosters with some good options. FX’s Fall schedule includes “Sons of Anarchy” which will move to Tuesdays at 10pm starting September 8th and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” will roll out on Thursday, September 10th at 10pm.

“Nip/Tuck” will be a few weeks behind “Sons” and “Sunny” when it returns in October with 10 new episodes. No word yet on the third season of “Damages” though I would expect that to wait until the Spring 2010 season.

Kevin Smith Adds Jason Lee To A COUPLE OF DICKS

Now that Jason Lee is out of work thanks to NBC’s cancellation of “My Name Is Earl” he’s free to move on to things like teaming back up with Kevin Smith for the comedy “A Couple of Dicks.” The buddy-cop-comedy stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan and so far the little we’ve seen is promising.

Smith revealed this announcement earlier this week, but it should come as no surprise to fans of Lee and Smith who would remember their previous pairing on MallRats. That might have been the first and last time I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Lee’s performance.

In the video below, MTV talks with Smith about “Dicks” which is the first film he has directed that he didn’t write. Considering the past couple of Smith releases this might not be a bad idea.

HOMECOMING Brings Its Poster Home

Last year the first trailer for Mischa Barton’s “Homecoming” was released and it looked every bit as cheesy as you might have imagined from its “Misery” approach to the psycho-girlfriend storyline. Over the weekend I had the chance to screen “Homecoming” and I must admit it was better than I expected in a lot of ways but still managed to fall short in some places. I’ll have my full review up later this week, but meanwhile you can take a look at the newly released “Homecoming” poster below.

Mike (Matt Long) is a small-town star athlete who is the first in his family to attend college, receiving a football scholarship to prestigious Northwestern University. When he returns home over Christmas break to the people he left behind - his family and friends - they are all surprised to see him with a new girlfriend, Elizabeth (Jessica Stroup), a pretty rich girl from Chicago.

No one is more shocked than Mike’s homecoming queen ex-girlfriend, Shelby (Mischa Barton), who immediately wants to be rid of Elizabeth and plots to take care of the problem.

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS Go French With New Trailer

It’s French and it’s different. It’s the latest trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds.” The previously released domestic trailers have been somewhat more reserved and calm, yes even for a Tarantino flick, but this new one stomps on those old ones. Get ready for lots more scenes and action, but as /Film points out, this trailer is the least indicative of what you’ll actually see when the film releases here in August.

LAW & ORDER SVU Locks Down Its Stars

“Law & Order: SVU” has dodged a bullet with the contract renewals of its main stars, Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni, after ongoing reports of negotiation disputes. Hargitay and Meloni have both agreed to a one year contract and with the option for one additional year. According to THR the duo netted themselves one heck of a healthy paycheck in the renewal:

Despite the conglomerates and particularly NBC Universal being in cost-cutting mode, Hargitay and Meloni are said to have boosted their most recent salaries of about $385,000 an episode. In a rare feat for show talent, they have been able to negotiate a piece of “SVU’s” lucrative back end, sources said.

Taking all into account, Hargitay’s and Meloni’s paychecks are expected to grow to more than $400,000 an episode, solidifying Hargitay’s position as the highest-paid woman in television and Meloni as one of the top male earners.

SVU has also inked a deal with a new ADA, Christine Lahti, who will be trading off with the returning ADA played by Stephanie March after the first four episodes next season.

DAYBREAKERS Trailer - Better Than Expected

When I first heard about “Daybreakers” I definitely had my doubts. Another “sole scientist must save the world from vampires” sounded way too “I Am Legend” to be interesting, but after watching the first trailer I might be ready to change my mind. Take a look and see if Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe make you reconsider “Daybreakers.”
