On this final episode of <em>Career Journeys</em> we welcome <strong>Laura Sydell &#8217;83</strong> by phone from San Francisco. Laura is the Digital Cultural Correspondent for NPR and was a Russian Cultural History and Theatre major at the Colleges. She started out as a journalist at WNYC in New York reporting on culture and politics of New York City’s racial communities. When she made the move to NPR, Sydell was not an expert in technology but was able to speak about the complex issues in ways listeners could understand. Quickly she became known for her reporting and interviews with people from Facebook, Google, and Apple. Her writing and reporting have received numerous accolades and awards over the years, and her investigation into patent trolls has been featured on This American Life. Sydell has remained involved in the Colleges as the 2017 Convocation speaker and was awarded the Alumna Achievement Award by the William Smith Alumnae Association.</p>
<p><em>Career Journeys</em> is a limited-run podcast from <em>the Herald</em> and the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education designed to help introduce parents, students, alums, and prospective students to the wealth of opportunities and pathways that Hobart and William Smith alumni and alumnae have taken following their graduation. On this episode of <em>Career Journeys</em> we welcome <strong>Sara Wroblewski &#8217;13</strong> by phone from Boston. Sara is the founder and CEO of One Bead, a company she founded while a student at HWS. Sara was a Media &amp; Society and Economics major at the Colleges and was the inaugural winner of The Pitch. One Bead partners with schools and after-school programs to provide unique enrichment programs for elementary-aged students. Sara began the company selling hand-blown glass beads on campus to support an elementary school in Nairobi. The company raised over $40,000 with the support of the Colleges. Now, eight years later, members of the Colleges’ community serve on One Bead’s Board of Directors and the company is proving that anyone can be a catalyst for change.</p>

He has traveled all over the country and the world as part of the President’s advance team. Stuart has maintained his ties to the Colleges by participating in the Career Services Day on the Hill trip to Washington D.C.</p>

When this episode was recorded, Cat was a Private Equity Associate at Quad Partners in New York City. She recently joined BlackRock’s Long Term Private Capital fund in September; it is BlackRock’s first direct investing private equity fund. After graduating with a degree in economics from the Colleges, she worked as an Investment Banking Analyst in the Diversified Industries group at J.P. Morgan and was the first sophomore to be accepted as a JP Morgan intern. In addition, Cat volunteers as the Vice President of Communications for Synergist Network, which connects women in investing careers. Cat has remained involved with the Colleges since graduation and currently serves as a co-chair for William Smith at Work, an alumnae group launched to promote connections between William Smith alumnae in a wide variety of fields.</p>

On this episode of <em>Career Journeys</em> we have <strong>Bill Whitaker &#8217;73</strong> on the phone from New York City. Whitaker graduated from HWS as an American History major before going on to earn a master&#8217;s degree in African-American studies from Boston University and later attending a graduate Journalism program at the University of California, Berkeley. He is currently a correspondent for 60 Minutes on CBS News, where he has been for five years and at the network for four decades. His reporting has taken him to the Middle East covering Syrian refugees and the start of Operation Desert Storm, Japan for the Fukushima nuclear disaster, South Africa during the funeral of Nelson Mandela, and the presidential campaigns of Mitt Romney, Michael Dukakis, and George W. Bush. His investigative work has included the biggest data leak in Swiss Bank history, the efforts to capture el Chapo, and the opioid crisis in the United States. For his reporting he has won many awards including multiple Emmys. Whitaker has continued to support the Colleges since graduation, including as a panelist in Career Services’ New York Behind the Scenes trip and as a member of the Board of Trustees.</p>

<p>On this episode of <em>Career Journeys</em>&nbsp;we are joined by&nbsp;<strong>Andrew Gelfuso &#8217;97</strong>&nbsp;by phone from Washington D.C. Andrew is the director of global business development at TCMA (A Drew Company) which manages the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington D.C. Andrew has had a career in government and trade, which has allowed him to develop a network of contacts and partners to help implement a vision for the trade center in D.C. Gelfuso graduated with a degree in political science and minor in religious studies. During his time at the Colleges, Andrew went abroad twice as well. In the early 2000s, Gelfuso worked in the International Trade Administration for the U.S. Department of Commerce, focusing on East Asia Pacific. Since graduation, he has continued to maintain ties to the Colleges through his participation in the Day on the Hill program through Career Services.</p>

<p>On this episode, we have <strong>Jessica Knoll &#8217;06</strong> on the phone from Los Angeles. Knoll graduated from HWS with a degree in English, concentrated in creative writing, as an Arts Scholar. She is the <em>New York Times</em> best-selling author of the novels <em>Luckiest Girl Alive</em> and <em>The Favorite Sister</em>. Her first novel was optioned for film by Lionsgate with Reese Witherspoon set to produce and Knoll writing the screenplay. Before writing full-time, she was a senior editor at <em>Cosmopolitan</em> and the articles editor at SELF. A prolific writer, she has also contributed op-eds to The New York Times. Her post-graduation support of the Colleges includes participating as a panelist in Career Services’ Los Angeles Behind the Scenes trip.</p>

Recently, he was the Keynote Speaker at the 2019 Multicultural Conference and served as a judge for The Pitch. Rawlins double-majored in history and art history and completed Honors work, graduating with high honors in History. He currently <span style="color: var(--color-text);">serves on the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Board of Trustees.</span></p>

<p>On this episode of <em>Career Journeys</em> we have <strong>Dr. Mark Mapstone &#8217;89</strong> on the phone from California. Dr. Mapstone graduated from HWS with a degree in psychology, a Master&#8217;s in psychology from Boston University and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. He <span style="color: var(--color-text);">is a translational neuroscientist, currently working at the University of California Irvine. Studying cognitive function in health and disease, Dr. Mapstone has been the lead author on groundbreaking studies into using specialized blood testing to predict Alzheimer’s disease. He is widely published in the field and serves as a Health Sciences Clinical Professor of Neurology at the School of Medicine at UC-Irvine. Dr. Mapstone has returned to campus as a Professional in Residence with Career Services and a John Henry Hobart Fellow in </span><span style="color: var(--color-text);">Ethics and Social Justice through the Hobart Dean&#8217;s Office.</span></p>

Gleason is the Managing Director of Wealth Management Banking at Bank of America Corp. and graduated from HWS with a degree in finance. She is a regular speaker and panelist at the “Finance Experience” New York and has worked closely with Career Services as a Professional in Residence and mentor to students. G<span style="color: var(--color-text);">leason has remained heavily involved in the Colleges: she received the Career Services Award in 2011, hosted students during the NYC &#8220;Finance Experience&#8221; trip, and has served on the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Board of Trustees since 2012 including on the Presidential Search Committee from 2018-2019.</span></p>

Judge Fisher graduated from HWS with a degree in History before attending the Catholic University of America for <em>Juris Doctor </em>and then University College London for her LLM and Ph.D. in International Law. Judge Fisher was appointed to the Appellate Bench of the Special Court for Sierra Leone in 2009, and appointed to the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone in 2013. She previously served as an International Judge of the War Crimes Chamber, Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Justice Fisher has remained involved in the Colleges through the President&#8217;s Forum and in 2015 was awarded the Alumna Achievement Award by the William Smith Alumnae Association.</p>

<p>This week on <em>Career Journeys</em> our guest is <strong>Thomas S. Buzzoto &#8217;68 L.H.D. &#8217;18</strong> who joins Alex in the studio. Bozzuto graduated from HWS with a degree in English and was a Theta Delta Chi brother, Druid, football player, member of Hobart Student Association and Little Theatre, worked at Saga, and was president of the student body. After graduation, Bozzuto served in Vietnam before earning a graduate degree from Syracuse University. During a career that has spanned over 45-years, Bozzuto has overseen and been responsible for the creation of more than 50,000 homes and apartments. In 1988, Bozzuto established The Bozzuto Group of companies with his partners, John Slidell, Rick Mostyn, and the late Bernie Lubcher. Today, he serves as the Chairman of the group. Bozzuto has remained heavily involved in the Colleges: his donations have funded the Bozzuto Boathouse on campus and the Bozzuto Center for Entrepreneurship downtown; his support of the First-Generation Initiative has led to scholarship opportunities for students; and he has served on the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Board of Trustees since 1999 and has been the Chairman since 2016.</p>

<p>For the first episode of our new podcast <em>Career Journeys</em>, we have <strong>Brad Falchuk &#8217;93 L.H.D. &#8217;14</strong> on the phone from Los Angeles. Falchuk graduated from HWS with a degree in English, with a concentration in Theatre, before graduate school at the American Film Institute. After writing scripts for a variety of shows in the early 2000s, Brad was hired by Ryan Murphy to work on the first season of <em>Nip/Tuck</em> – a show that led to an ongoing collaboration and has produced shows like <em>American Horror Story</em>, <em>Pose</em>, <em>American Crime Story</em>, <em>9-1-1</em>, <em>Glee</em>, and the upcoming Netflix show <em>The Politician</em>.</p>
<p><em>Career Journeys </em>is a limited-run podcast from <em>the Herald</em> and the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education designed to help introduce parents, students, alums, and prospective students to the wealth of opportunities and pathways that Hobart and William Smith alumni and alumnae have taken following their graduation. The show is produced and hosted by <a href="https://hwsherald.com/category/alex-kerai-19/">Alex Kerai &#8217;19</a> in conjunction with <em>the Herald</em> and the Salisbury Center.
