SNAPCASE If anyone speaks to me about favourite bands, they’ll hear me mention SNAPCASE in the first breath. I only discovered them towards the late 90’s on a Victory Records compilation cassette (yeah we had tapes!) along with some of my other all time favourite bands Earth Crisis, Strife, Refused, The Path of Resistance.. If Sick of It All were the band that made me want to start a band, Snapcase are the reason I formed one. Musically and ideologically unmatched. Truly progressive hardcore, their sound and guitar style has influenced my own a heck of a lot. I’ve been trying to see them play since I heard about their ‘final show’ a few years back, even buying tickets to […]

Sick of It All/Snapcase poster SICK OF IT ALL Sick of it All’s 1994 album ‘Scratch the Surface’ was life changing for me. I first read a review on it in an amazing German socialist fanzine called ‘Blood Red’ and for some reason it piqued my interest intensely. The description of this heavy metallic punk sound with socially conscious lyrics that was known as ‘hardcore’ appealed so strongly to me.I think I basically started my little record distribution in South Africa just so I could get my hands on a copy (in those days there were NO stores that carried anything remotely close to this kind of music). The band epitomises commitment and passion, setting my personal ideals and standards […]

So this Monday morning I woke up as early as I could to take a sunrise ride along the beachfront promenade. I had all intentions to be up BEFORE sunrise, ie when it was still dark. But even my alarm couldn’t wake me. I woke up at 6.30am, a good hour AFTER sunrise.. Or maybe my phone had switched to daylight savings mode and I’m living a little bit in the future (checks computer time)? I made it down to the promenade by 7am and was surprised at the number of people already there and enjoying the perfect weather. No wind and only some whispy pretty looking clouds. My route takes me from Moses Mabhida stadium to Moyo on the […]

Critical Mass is a bicycle ride that takes place on the last Friday of every month in over 300 cities worldwide. Part protest and part celebration, but mainly a great way to highlight the awesomeness of getting around of 2 wheels, create awareness of bikes as an alternative and sustainable form of transport, build community and celebrate our love of bikes. Last month we met in the parking lot of Moses Mabhida Stadium, headed over the highway and under the tunnel onto Suncoast beach, then south all the way to Moyo along the promenade, and then of course back to the stadium. Here is the updated facebook event for the next ride.. the first was awesome! That was a great […]

It should be really awesome. It’s the final show ever by the band I’ve played in since 1998, Crossingpoint, so we’ve done a special commemorative poster to print and have available […]

“I find in me a desire, a dream for something more. Something not part of the dreary existential zombie-life so dear to us all… I realize that I’m thinking thoughts society would label as repressed anger, or perhaps misplaced anxiety, or just plain rebellion. Well, I’m tired of the lies the world feeds me. I’m upset with the food chain, because I, you and me, we’re at the bottom. We’re living a life, working towards misplaced goals, missing the point, completely oblivious to the bigger picture. I’m sick of people without guts, without the balls to stand up straight and do what they should. I’m sick of people making excuses. I’m sick of the selfish, money-centered mindset everyone is so […]

I find gossip a waste of time for both the hearer as well as the speaker. When this kind of thing happens its what makes life more pleasant for me, kinda like a reaffirmation of my beliefs – cos I guess it feels good when something comes along and says “you’re right, you’re cool” hahaha!
