SITUATIONALLY DEPENDANT
The beginning of this section is to ensure that we note that the situation (as mentioned), the threat, restrictions on clothing (which might be the biggest modifier) the equipment available, the profile under which one is opearating and the mission all effect the equipment, gear and weapons carried.

With these points in mind, let’s look at a basis for establishing an “Every Day Carry.”

LEVELS OF THREAT, RESTRICTIONS AND CARRY ACCOUNTABILITY
If I were to “graph” these factors (which I have not) I could visually demonstrate the decision making process that I apply when selecting my arms and equipment. It has never occurred to me to create an actual “Levels Of Threat” type of matrix or graph from which to base my carry. In the past I have just informally examined and then made decisions of what and how much to carry. That’s very ambiguous and I don’t want to leave you with ambiguity. So, in this first post (Krieger_Tactics EDC – PART 1) I’m going to define what I carry based on (1) an identified threat level of “LOW”, and (2) No restrictions. In subsequent posts I’ll discuss what I select based on the modifiers such as increased restrictions and or increased threat.

LEVEL 1

No immediate threat;Potential for criminal activity is extremely low as is terroristic threat.

No Restrictions regarding arms, ammo availability nor supporting equipment.

The situation above describes every day norm in the area that I live. While crime in this area is extremely low, it does exist, and at any moment one could find themselves in a life or death situation involving firearms and or multiple assailants.

CARRY CONFIGURATION LEVEL 1

Handgun and Ammunition on my person

1 x Glock 17 Semi-automatic handgun

1 x Glock magazine in the gun

5 x Glock magazines in mag carriers on my belt.

Total Glock magazines on my person: 6 (each with a 17 round capacity; equals 102 rounds).

Edged, Improvised, Stabbing, Crushing weapons on my person

1 x Spyderco folding knife

1 x Cold Steel, Tanto edged, fixed bladed knife

3 x improvised stabbing/crushing weapons

Medical Equipment and Asset Locating equipment

2 x medical kits

Signal and Asset Locating equipment

1 x flashlight

1 x handcuff key

4 x equipment for identifying my location and providing to higher

3 x equipment for identifying Asset’s location

AVAILABLE IN A (STANDARD, NON-MISSION SPECIFIC) BACK PACK

1 x pistol caliber carbine

2 x soft body armor

1 x enhanced medical kit with advanced trauma management items and equipment

4 x Glock 17 magazines (17 rounds each)

1 x (30 round)Glock magazine

1 x (solar) cell phone charger with emergency numbers, Android and iPhone charging cable and mini flashlight

**Other items not listed due to sensitivity in nature and propriety

AVAILABLE IN A FANNY PACK

2 x Glock 17 magazines

1 x solar powered cell phone charger with Android and iPhone charging cable

1 x trauma med kit

OTHER AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT

**These items not listed due to sensitivity in nature and propriety

RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
I have learned from many of my own experiences and mistakes. I have also learned from the experiences and mistakes of many others. In this series I will be discussing what I carry, how it varies and more importantly (perhaps) why I carry what I carry. This series will be an in depth review of the equipment… if not necessarily its employment.

SUMMARY
A list of equipment, gear and weapons that comprise one’s EDC may change multiple times a day, based on many factors. When developing this list, it may be best to establish a desired baseline from which to make changes that adapt to these factors.

None of the hunters that I spoke with had attended any formal course regarding long range precision marksmanship. Each of the hunters had very basic knowledge regarding the atmospheric effects on a bullet in flight and or the mechanics of adjusting a scope based on caliber or range.

This series is dedicated to providing the basic instruction for marksmen and hunters who are at the beginner level of shooting and are less experienced long distance precision marksmen who utilize either the MIL dot or Duplex style reticle system with information in order to assist in attaining greater proficiency in your skills and abilities.

If this describes your marksmanship skills then I want you to know that my goal is to assist you in learning the principles required in order to effectively engage targets. The utilization of the MIL dot reticle as the foundational reticle system mandates that the marksman himself is the point of information development, and not the scope reticle itself. The use of the demands that the marksman himself is proficient in calculations and the employment of his weapons system to include the scope, and not the other way around.

While the goal of these posts is to provide information in utilizing the MIL dot reticle system, I would have those who read this post be advised that the exact same principles that I describe may also be used with the more “modern” scope reticles.

7-YARD LINE
My zeroing method may be a little unconventional when compared to the methods used by some, especially with regards to utilizing a long range precision marksmanship rifle, but I think that it is very efficient and effective. That is why I am sharing it in this forum.

Whether I am shooting a pistol, AR style rifle, or even a “long-gun” as some in the tactical world refer to long range precision rifles, I have the exact same first few rounds process.

No matter what weapon system I’m utilizing I start at the 7 yard line and it is from this distance that I fire the first round.

I utilize this approach due to my personal experience and the experience of others that if the deviation of your sighting system is great enough, and the range at which you fire your first few rounds is far enough…

You will not hit the target, nor even the backer at all, and you will not have an initial reference impact from which you are able to make adjustments.

Some may say that’s not possible. It is. It’s happened in my presence. In fact this is exactly what had occurred with the first of the two shooters some months ago. He purchased a new rifle, put a scope on it, went to the range and fired it at 100 yards and completely missed the target and backer. Neither he, nor those he was with were ever able to see his hits on the target because he completely missed. When he explained what he had experienced to me I had a very good idea what happened. I explained it to him. I don’t think he didn’t quite believe me.

From the 7-yard line, I verified that the scope was placed on the rifle appropriately, and from a kneeling position at I fired one single shot. From 7 yards the shot was extremely low and far to the right. At 100 yards it would have been far enough off of center that it would not have impacted the target backer. We would not therefore, have been able to know from what point to begin making corrections. The shooter was able to see that if this same rifle had been fired from the 100-yard line that the likelihood of missing the target backer completely was very high.

I made a few elevation and windage adjustments, fired and then hit center mass.

Now that the shooter could see that the rifle did have the capability to hit center mass (albeit at 7 yards) he had a new-found confidence in his rifle and scope. I passed the rifle off to the shooter, who then fired it from supported prone and hit off center (high and to the left). We then made adjustments to get him on center and then moved to the 50 yard line, where we repeated the process and then the 100 yard line. At the 100 yard line the shooter was able to group less than 1 MOA and just slightly left of center. This left deviation is attributable to a certain few (correctable) aspects. I’ll address those later.

TAKE AWAY
For now, I’ll share this take-away from my initial shooting (zeroing) process. You can always start the zeroing process at 25, 50 or even the 100-yard line. You will most likely do fine. I would just note that I’ve seen the best of shooters miss during the zeroing process at each of those yard lines. I always start at 7 yards. I’ve never missed an entire backer at the 7 yard line and I always know exactly and immediately where I’ve hit. This process saves me (and those who are with me) both time and rounds utilized.

Krieger_Tactics: TEOTWAWKI: Main Battle Rifle (Part 2)

Why the term, “Main Battle Rifle”?

This posts deals with the term, “Main Battle Rifle,” which I used in Part 1 of this series.

MAIN BATTLE RIFLE
I choose the term “Main Battle Rifle” as opposed to “AR” or any of several other descriptive terms that could be applied due to the mindset and purpose of its anticipated use in my life.

REAL-WORLD APPLICATION
Part of the validation process of my articles (by you, the reader), especially the TEOTWAWKI series, is uncovering my mindset and the view with which I approach the TEOTWAWKI possibility. Within the articles that I share I want to show you that I’m not writing and or regurgitating something that I read without having validated the information myself. I want you to know that I am not the person on the range who looks flashy, or that has the coolest gear, or who says all the latest buzzwords, yet who’s whose mindset is completely impractical, unrealistic and false.

I want you, the readers, the commenters and the sharers of the posts to know that EVERYTHING I say, do and teach is based on real world experiences (of myself or coworkers), or as close as I can predict an event will occur – based on my (past and present) real world experiences.

THE APPROPRIATE TERM
The term AR, does not carry the thought process that I want to convey to the readers.

For me, the rifle pictured (and its near identical counterpart) has one purpose.

That purpose is its employment, in battle, by me in the defense of myself, my family or others against others who would do us harm.

I pray that day never comes.

My rifle is not for show, it’s not for instruction, it’s not to impress my buddies when they come over, or to make me feel good about myself.

My rifle is not for show, it’s not for instruction, it’s not to impress my buddies when they come over, or to make me feel good about myself.

My rifle is for… battle.

It is therefore, if you would allow, a “Battle Rifle”.

I use it in classes, so that I can employ it better in battle.

I use it in classes so that the students and I can discuss it, will understand the thought process and they will then consider setting up their rifles like mine so that it will serve them better in battle.

I shoot it at the range, so that I can employ it better in battle.

I show it to my buddies when they come over, so that they can see it, we can discuss it and they will consider setting up their rifles like mine so that it will serve them better in battle.

I want the idea to flourish that a rifle’s primary purpose in my life is the preservation of life in… Battle.

MAIN
The “Main” that I added to the term “Battle Rifle” is because I have many rifles, but not each one is set up to carry me into battle with the accessories that I prefer attached. Those are typically rifles that I provide for use at the range by parties interested in purchasing a rifle but are not very knowledgeable about them.

READY AND PACKED
I have two “Main Battle Rifles.” They are set up nearly identically. The only difference between the two is that one has a two-point sling and one has a single point sling that I can easily disconnect. One of the rifles I use almost entirely in classes. The other stays packed up in the “Get Home Bag” that I featured in one of my posts.

If there is one “take-away” from this post, it would be,

Identify whether your rifle is set up to support you in your endeavor to survive in a TEOTWAWKI situation or not. Mine is and thus I reference it appropriately.

As a member of Special Forces, I served as an instructor in Phase II, Small Unit Tactics (land navigation, marksmanship, Light Infantry Tactics; recon patrols, combat patrols, close quarters battle, airborne operations, and an introduction to Special Forces operations) and Phase III, the Special Forces Medical Sergeant’s Course.

For the past ten years I have been employed as a contractor in the various capacities and locations.

I am writing this post because I often see weekend warriors, “instructors”, students and range attendees with a host of equipment on their rifles.

I think there might be a more realistic approach based on the reality of anticipated use of your main battle rifle.

I’ll be discussing that approach in this and subsequent posts.

MINDSET: FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION
My two rifles are set up for one purpose: Combat and Survival in a TEOTWAWKI situation. I have two main battle rifles. One is a Daniel Defense DDM4 V11 and the other rifle is a Smith and Wesson M&P15 TS. These two weapons are set up identically.

ACCESSORIES
I have minimal accessories on or attached to my rifles. The reason for this is simple, but I will be discussing the reasoning point by point in future posts. For now I will share that I’m not trying to impress anyone by having the latest gadgetry, or the latest flash, or including the latest CQB technique, which may or may not have validity. Neither of my two main battle rifles have bipods, or finger groove accessories, or 45 degree canted sights, or a magnified optic. My rifles are setup the way that they are because of many reasons – one of which is that it works. Simplicity in a complex world is King. For now I will note that the accessories that are on the rifles are: Aimpoint T1, Back-Up (locking) iron sights and a Surefire X300U-A light.

SELECTED ACCESSORIES AND WHY
I’ll also discuss why I use an Aimpoint instead of an Eotech, why my weapon light is the X300U-A, and why it is positioned UNDER the rifle, and not on the side at 90degrees or even at the 45 degree position and why I do not have a finger activation touch pad. I’ll also discuss what type of magazines I carry and why.

Follow Krieger_Tactics to ensure that you don’t miss any of my posts regarding selection and setup of your Main Battle Rifle.

An important aspect of this portion of your evasion and recovery plan is having the ability to provide your location to friendly forces – perhaps even surreptitiously.

Many gun belts have open top carriers or a nylon covered type of elastic band or cord that secures the magazine in its carrier.

Open top magazine carriers do very little to prevent your magazines from being stripped away during operations.

The elastic, nylon elastic band type of magazine carrier is an attempt to blend two worlds. Unfortunately, in my experience the Nylon elastic bands tend to be catch on the grooved sides of the polymer style magazines.

When utilizing a Velcro nylon flap/closed top magazine carrier (such as is pictured) you don’t lose equipment. THAT is the ultimate sense of security during movement.

This security of mind translates to quicker speed when obstacles – which results in: Greater Battlefield Survivability.
