BOZEMAN — Eleven Montana State University students spent the academic year serving on the boards of local nonprofit organizations as part of the MSU Leadership Institute’s Boardroom Bobcats mentorship program, which is completing its sixth year.  

The Boardroom Bobcats program selects MSU students and matches them with local nonprofits, where they serve as non-voting board members. In addition to regular board meetings, the students undertake specific board projects and participate in professional development training hosted by MSU’s Leadership Institute to develop lifelong leadership skills. The program provides students with nonprofit sector experience and mentoring. In return, the participating nonprofits’ boards gain valuable student perspectives. 

Tyler Noyes, a student double majoring in agriculture business and agriculture education in MSU’s College of Agriculture, participated in the program this academic year. 

“Serving with the Montana Farm Bureau has not only been beneficial to my course of study in agriculture but has helped to establish a relationship with an organization that is committed to the agriculture community and industry,” Noyes said.

BOZEMAN — A historian examining the development and modernization of the beef industry will visit the Montana State University Library this summer to conduct research after receiving a travel and access award.

Daniel T. Gresham, professor in the Department of Humanities at St. Mary’s College in Kansas, received MSU’s Distinctive Collections Travel and Access Award. The $2,500 award, which is being awarded for the second time, will help fund his travel to Bozeman this summer.

Gresham will use the MSU Library’s substantial agricultural holdings to provide ranchers’ and university scientists’ perspectives for a book he is writing that explores the development and modernization of the beef industry from World War I to 1933. The book, “Cattle Cartel: How Big Cattlemen and Packers Harnessed the Meat Industry, 1916-1933,” will be published by the University of Nebraska Press.

The award is a collaborative effort of the MSU Ivan Doig Center for the Study of the Lands and Peoples of the North American West, the Archives and Special Collections department of the MSU Library and the Friends of MSU Library. The Distinctive Collections Travel and Access Award is traditionally jointly funded by the Friends of MSU Library and the Doig Center. This year, due to rising travel costs, the Friends of MSU Library contributed additional funds. The award will be offered annually through at least 2025, according to Jodi Allison-Bunnell, head of the MSU Library’s Archives and Special Collections.

“We are so pleased that Dr. Gresham will be using our many agricultural collections to explore this important topic,” said Allison-Bunnell. “He has identified a wonderful variety of collections, and I’m aware of others that I look forward to bringing to his attention.”

“Dr. Gresham’s work is exactly the kind of thoughtful project about the North American West that the Doig Center likes to support,” said Mary Murphy, the center’s director.

The MSU Library, which serves the institution’s students and faculty, as well as Montana citizens, is home to the Merrill G. Burlingame Archives and Special Collections, which houses manuscript collections on the West and the Greater Yellowstone region, with particular strengths in agricultural history; the world’s most comprehensive collection of trout and salmonid books; select records of Montana State University; area-focused books; and a substantial collection of angling oral histories. BOZEMAN — Like many college seniors graduating this May, Matthew Magoon forged his path at Montana State University amid the coronavirus pandemic. As did countless others, he improvised and persevered with classes, research projects, jobs and extracurricular activities. But for Magoon, with the disruption also came a calling, and his career plans came into focus.

While engaged in multiple medical research projects at MSU, Magoon also worked in the intensive care unit and emergency room at Bozeman’s hospital, tending to COVID-19 patients. Drawing upon those experiences, after he walks across the stage during MSU’s commencement ceremony on May 13 he will enroll in University of Washington’s Medical Scientist Training Program, a combined M.D. and Ph.D. degree track that will allow him to continue both medical research and practice. Ultimately, he said, he wants to be able to improve treatment of traumatic injuries.

“I love helping people,” said Magoon, an Honors College student majoring in biological engineering in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering in MSU’s Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering. “Being able to care for someone by applying science and technology, by earning their trust and working with a team of people, it’s very rewarding.”

A native of Colorado Springs who was drawn to MSU for its mountain setting and opportunities for undergraduate research, Magoon started out majoring in biochemistry. He had trained as an EMT in the summer after high school and thought he might want to go to medical school. By the end of his freshman year, however, he was feeling the pull of engineering, drawn by how fluid mechanics and other technical principles could explain how the body works. He changed his major.

Around the same time, he went to MSU’s Freshman Research Symposium, where he heard Stephanie McCalla, associate professor of chemical and biological engineering, describe her work. “I thought, ‘This is awesome,’” Magoon said. After inquiring about a position in McCalla’s lab, Magoon began working there, contributing to a project to study early detection of tumors.

“I wasn’t sure I would actually like doing research, but I wanted to have the experience,” Magoon said. “I ended up falling in love with it. It’s hard work, running experiments and having a lot of them fail. But it’s also kind of addictive, working with these little pieces of puzzles and trying to put them together.”

By spring of his sophomore year he was starting his own project in McCalla’s lab, to detect acetaminophen — the active ingredient in Tylenol — in cases of suspected overdose, a leading cause of liver failure. Just as he was starting the work in the lab, the pandemic struck. Amid shelter in place orders, most research in the lab was suspended.

The disruption was disappointing, Magoon said, but also offered an opportunity for reflection. He had been working as a resident adviser in an MSU residence hall, but found himself mostly without residents. While he finished out his contract for the job through his junior year, during which he was able to resume his research project as well, he turned back to his interest in medicine, freshly fueled by the urgency of the new coronavirus. Last May he landed a job working in the cancer center at Bozeman Health. By August, he was working in the ICU as the Delta variant was surging in Montana.

“Being face-to-face with that, seeing patients I couldn’t save, it made it very real,” Magoon said. While caring for patients, he also found his mind pulled toward the underlying science of their treatment, with his engineering classes and research giving him a deeper understanding. He worked 12-hour shifts in the ICU on weekends, with some shifts in the ER as well, before transitioning in January fully to the ER, where he still works.

Meanwhile, Magoon resumed his work in McCalla’s lab on detecting acetaminophen overdose. “It was a very challenging project,” McCalla said, and navigating it during the pandemic was only one of the hurdles Magoon encountered. “He took everything in stride and pushed through it. He’s really hard-working and you can tell he really cares about what he’s doing.”

Magoon said he valued how accessible different experiences, including research experiences, are at MSU. “The connection with the faculty here has been fantastic,” he said. “Everyone is so helpful and so approachable.”

As he looks past graduation to the UW program, a unique and competitive degree track typically accepting only a dozen students per year, he can see how the late nights of studying for classes, the long shifts in the ICU and all the trials in the research lab center around a sense of purpose that comes from helping people when they need it most, he said.

“It all comes together when you’re standing next to someone who’s breathing because of what you did,” Magoon said. “Their loved ones are there, and you can tell them, ‘It’s going to be OK.’”

BOZEMAN —The following list includes candidates for degrees at Montana State University’s 136th commencement ceremonies, which are set for 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 13. 

The university expects approximately 2,253 candidates for degrees, including 1,813 undergraduate students, 337 master’s students and 103 doctoral students , according to MSU Office of the Registrar. In addition, 209 undergraduate students who will graduate in the summer and 182 Gallatin College MSU students will be eligible to participate in spring commencement ceremonies. 

Two ceremonies will be held, both at MSU’s Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. Students from the College of Arts and Architecture, Jake Jabs College of Business and Entrepreneurship, Mark and Robyn Jones College of Nursing and College of Letters and Science will graduate at 9 a.m. Students from the College of Agriculture, Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering, College of Education, Health and Human Development and Gallatin College MSU will graduate at 1:30 p.m.

BOZEMAN — A Montana State University researcher known as a creative and prolific physicist has received one of science’s greatest honors in recognition of his work to understand solar flares and other magnetic behavior of the sun.

Dana Longcope, professor in and head of the Department of Physics in MSU’s College of Letters and Science, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, joining MSU’s Joan Broderick among this year’s 120 inductees announced Tuesday. They are the only incoming members from the five-state region of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and the Dakotas.

“To be elected to the National Academy of Sciences is one of the ultimate career accomplishments of any faculty member with a scholarly career in the sciences,” said Jason Carter, MSU’s vice president for research, economic development and graduate education. “Dana’s contributions to the astrophysics community are impressive and impactful, and the best part of this honor is the recognition by his world-class peers.”

NAS was established by congressional charter in 1863 to provide objective, independent advice to the nation on matters of science and technology. Of its roughly 2,900 current members, about 190 have won Nobel prizes. Cathy Whitlock, inducted in 2018, is the only other MSU scientist to have been elected.

“I’m thrilled to have this recognition,” Longcope said. “It’s quite humbling and a big surprise.”

“Dana is both a great scientist and a great leader in the astrophysics community,” said Yves Idzerda, dean of the College of Letters and Science. “His research has provided insight about the sun’s corona, while his leadership has helped set the priorities for the science community. The students at MSU greatly benefit from his willingness to work and mentor them in such an exciting area.”

As one of the original members of MSU’s internationally recognized Solar Physics Group, Longcope has played a central role over the past two decades in securing MSU’s reputation as a leader in the field. In nominating him for the NAS’s Arctowski Medal that he received last year, his MSU physics colleagues Charles Kankelborg, Jiong Qiu and Neil Cornish described him as a “creative and prolific physicist” whose work has had widespread impact.

While emitting life-giving sunlight to Earth, the sun is a violent swirl of charged gases made white-hot by nuclear fusion and generating a powerful and chaotic magnetic field, the focus of Longcope’s research. Cornish has described Longcope’s work as “bringing order to chaos” through “elegant models” that seek to describe how the ever-shifting magnetic field lines caused by the sun’s rotation build up and then release huge amounts of energy in the form of solar flares that can destroy satellites, disrupt the electrical grid and cause the aurora.

After earning his bachelor’s and then doctorate at Cornell University in 1993, Longcope was a postdoctoral researcher studying solar flares when he caught word that Loren Acton — a Montana native who grew up in Lewistown, graduated from MSU and had a 29-year career at Lockheed Martin that culminated with flying on a NASA space shuttle mission to study the sun’s atmosphere and magnetic field — was returning to Bozeman to establish a solar physics research program. “People told me, ‘You’ll want to be part of that. They’re building a great group,’” Longcope said. “And it turned out to be exactly like that.” He arrived at MSU in 1996.

Since then, Longcope has served alongside NAS members on multiple national committees, authoring reports to inform Congress about the importance of understanding and predicting solar flares. A major report he contributed to in 2013 recommended that NASA develop a probe that would fly through the sun’s corona — the outer atmosphere where solar flares occur — to take measurements. The mission launched in 2018 and has already performed multiple, ever-nearer fly-bys of the sun, using Venus’s gravity to bend its orbit back toward the star before using the sun’s gravity to accelerate to speeds up to 430,000 mph, making the probe the fastest-ever man-made object. It is named for Eugene N. Parker, formerly a professor emeritus at the University of Chicago and NAS member, who died in March, so the occasion of Longcope’s induction to the academy is bittersweet, he said.

The Parker mission is part of a growing investment in solar physics, so now is an interesting time to serve on NAS, Longcope said. “It’s an important job, helping guide how Congress invests in science,” he said. With regard to solar physics, “there’s still so much we don’t understand, and there’s a range of implications that affect the national interest in terms of satellites, the electrical grid and so on.”

Longcope was the recipient in 2000 of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government to outstanding scientists and engineers beginning their independent careers. He was awarded the Karen Harvey Prize by Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society in 2003. At MSU, he received the Cox Faculty Award for Creative Scholarship and Teaching in 2006.

“It’s wonderful to be able, every day, to work on solving these scientific puzzles,” Longcope said. “I love having mysteries that I don’t fully understand. When you make a bit of progress, you’re the first person who’s been able to understand something in that way. Then you get to communicate that to students, so they understand they can do science like this too. It’s very satisfying.”

BOZEMAN — In an extraordinary wave of recognition, a Montana State University scientist has been named to two of the nation’s most prestigious academies in a single week in celebration of her work to unravel the mysteries of a family of chemical reactions found throughout nature.

Joan Broderick, professor in and head of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in MSU’s College of Letters and Science, has been elected to both the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Each academy has previously inducted only one other MSU-affiliated member. Broderick, along with MSU’s Dana Longcope, are the only people in the five-state region of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and the Dakotas to be elected to NAS this year.

“Being elected to NAS is considered one of the highest honors a scientist can receive, and having this come at the same time as joining AAA&S is an extraordinary accomplishment,” said Jason Carter, MSU’s vice president for research, economic development and graduate education. “It’s a testament to Joan’s scientific impact.”

As one of only 120 incoming members of NAS, which was established by congressional charter in 1863 to provide objective, independent advice to the nation on matters of science and technology, Broderick joins MSU’s Cathy Whitlock, elected in 2018, and approximately 2,900 other members — roughly 190 of whom have won Nobel prizes. AAA&S, whose members have included Benjamin Franklin, Charles Darwin and Margaret Mead, was founded in 1780 and “honors excellence and convenes leaders to examine new ideas, address issues of importance to the nation and the world, and advance the public good,” according to the announcement of this year’s 261 inductees across of a range of fields, including the sciences, arts and humanities.

“I feel incredibly honored and excited to receive this recognition,” Broderick said, “and it is recognition that really belongs to my entire research group, past and present.”

Broderick, who came to MSU in 2005 and was the inaugural recipient of MSU’s Women in Science Distinguished Professor Award in 2013, is known as an advocate for other women scientists, a mentor to countless students and an accomplished teacher as well as a relentless researcher who continues to trailblaze understanding of molecules known as radical SAMs.

“Joan’s passion for chemistry not only advances the field but provides unprecedented opportunities for Montana State students who work in her world-class laboratory,” Carter said.

After earning her doctorate in chemistry from Northwestern University in 1992, Broderick went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral researcher in the lab of JoAnne Stubbe, who suggested Broderick look into a biochemical reaction in the common bacteria E. coli involving S-adenosyl-L-methionine, or SAM. Little was then known about the interlocking polygons of oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen except that they appeared to sustain bacterial life by making a free radical — an unstable atom lacking outer electrons and hungry for reaction. At the time, scientists mostly thought that reactions involving radicals were aberrations.

Broderick’s persistent and painstaking investigation of how SAM works — unfolding as other scientists showed that there are actually more than 100,000 radical SAM enzymes, making them one of the largest families of such molecules in nature — defines a career that Stubbe, professor emerita at MIT who was elected to AAA&S in 1991 and NAS in 1992, has said exemplifies “beautiful science.”

As a young professor at Amherst College working on a shoestring budget, Broderick improvised through frustrating research trials that eventually led to a penetrating insight about how SAM worked with clusters of iron and sulfur common in nature. After coming to MSU, she and her collaborators used powerful tools to decode the molecular structures within the reaction. Their work led to a groundbreaking paper in the journal Science in 2016 showing how SAM momentarily rearranges into an intermediate molecule that uses the radical to precisely grab atoms from other stable molecules, overcoming biochemical inertia to initiating complex reactions that are vital to life. Broderick has marveled at how the chemistry is “exquisitely controlled” and “mind-blowing.”

“Being elected to either of these academies is a great honor. Being elected to both means that Joan’s peers recognize that her work not only represents a distinguished advancement of science but also has direct benefits for the common good,” said Yves Idzerda, dean of the College of Letters and Science. “Joan is not just a great scientist but a respected colleague and role-model for others, embodying the values that fellow scientists embrace.”

In 2019, Broderick won a prestigious $1.8 million National Institutes of Health grant designed to foster open-ended research with potential for breakthroughs. Besides implications in medicine — scientists have found at least eight radical SAMs in humans, some responsible for translating DNA into complex molecules that carry out various cell processes — the research could lead to new ways of making medical drugs or other products, according to Broderick.

In 2020, Broderick was also elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (known as AAAS, as opposed to the AAA&S), a distinction she shares with Raina Plowright, associate professor in the Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology in MSU’s College of Agriculture, and Robert Walker, professor in the chemistry and biochemistry department.

A first-generation college graduate who found her love of research as a freshman while working in labs at Washington State University to support herself, Broderick is the second person affiliated with MSU to be inducted into AAA&S. Henrietta Mann, emeritus professor in the Department of Native American Studies in MSU’s College of Letters and Science, was elected in 2018.

“I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to pursue fascinating scientific questions  with exceptional scientists, including my scientific and life partner Will Broderick, and also the talented students and postdocs who have worked in my lab over the years, and my outstanding collaborators,” Broderick said. ‘The successes we’ve had would not be possible without the entire team and their dedication to the pursuit of science.”

BOZEMAN – Though bison are often closely associated with the Great Plains, a new study by a Montana State University doctoral student has found that bison actually occupied much of North America over the last 20,000 years. 

John Wendt, a doctoral student in the Department of Earth Sciences in MSU’s College of Letters and Science, studies how the distribution and abundance of large herbivores, such as bison, changed over thousands of years. His paper, “Large-scale Climatic Drivers of Bison Distribution and Abundance in North America Since the Last Glacial Maximum,” written with his MSU academic adviser David McWethy as well as Chris Widga from East Tennessee State University and Bryan Shuman from the University of Wyoming, was published online in the journal Quaternary Science Reviews in April. 

The paper is the first to combine a large, interdisciplinary dataset to reconstruct how the distribution of bison herds shifted, expanding and contracting across North America over the last 20,000 years. By mapping the occurrence of bison fossils over time, researchers determined that the animals occupied much of North America, not just the Great Plains region. 

“This study brings a more holistic view of bison and how they responded to a varying climate,” Wendt said. “It also adds to our knowledge about how bison responded to past environments.” 

The research paper includes a map that Wendt created to track bison distributions and how they changed since the Last Glacial Maximum, a time about 20,000 years ago when the ice sheets were at their greatest extent across North America. From Alaska to the Gulf coast, the amount of change in both bison range and range size reinforces the idea that bison occupied a large part of North America at one time, he said.  

McWethy, co-author on the paper and MSU associate professor in Earth sciences, said the paper corrects previous ideas about where bison lived in North America. 

“Some scientists argued that bison were limited to small areas of the western United States. This data shows bison were found throughout much of North America and that they moved in response to changing conditions,” McWethy said. 

Bison thrived across broad areas throughout North America and survived conditions – such as climate and environment changes, and hunting pressure from humans – that led other mammals, such as mammoths, to become extinct, Wendt said. 

The research showed that during a climatic warming period, bison expanded where glaciers retreated, following the grasslands and rangelands across the continent. 

“Bison adapted as the climate altered the availability and distribution of resources,” he said. 

Between 4,000 and 1,000 years ago, the bison population expanded, according to the research. “We have this moment of time where there are written accounts of bison – the vast herds of the West. This paper shows that what those early explorers saw was the end point of this long trend of population growth,” Wendt said. 

The project collaborated across different research fields including the historical study of geography, climate and fossils.   

“This paper really came out of John’s creativity and persistence,” McWethy said. “It involved a unique collaboration, and John came up with the idea to reconstruct the spatial distribution of bison across the continent since the Last Glacial period using a dataset that had not been fully explored.” 

This approach provided a bigger picture of how bison herds moved in response to changing climate and ecosystems over time, Wendt said. 

“It’s important to connect the dots between the past and today,” he said.  

“By integrating thousands of observations from the fossil record, we have gained a deeper understanding of bison and the evolution of North American ecosystems over the past 20,000 years. We think the results and maps from this research will be valuable resources for tribes, natural resource managers and communities who are working to conserve bison and restore rangeland ecosystems.”

BOZEMAN — Montana State University expects more than 2,600 students will receive degrees during MSU’s 136th commencement ceremonies, which are set for 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 13. 

MSU will confer degrees on candidates for graduation for the 2021-2022 academic year. This spring semester, there are expected to be 1,813 undergraduate students, 337 master’s students and 103 doctoral students receiving degrees, according to MSU Office of the Registrar. There will also be 182 students from Gallatin College MSU who are expected to receive associate degrees or certificates. In addition, 209 candidates for undergraduate degrees in the summer session will be eligible to participate in spring commencement ceremonies. 

Two ceremonies will be held, both at MSU’s Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. Students from the College of Arts and Architecture, Jake Jabs College of Business and Entrepreneurship, Mark and Robyn Jones College of Nursing and College of Letters and Science will graduate at 9 a.m. with the processional beginning at 8:40 a.m.  

As part of the ceremony, MSU President Waded Cruzado will present two MSU President’s Medallions, recognizing those who have demonstrated a rare commitment to community service and higher education through long-standing and extraordinary support. The first recipient is Ellen Kreighbaum, professor emerita in the Department of Health and Human Development and a pioneer in bringing equality to MSU collegiate sports, who recently created an endowment to support women’s Bobcat Basketball. The second recipient is Kathleen Chafey, a professor emerita in MSU’s Mark and Robyn Jones College of Nursing, who recently created an endowed professorship to support the Caring for Our Own Program, which she helped found. In addition, Judge Sidney Thomas of the United States 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will receive an MSU honorary doctorate in humane letters. The ceremony is expected to conclude at approximately 11 a.m. 

Students from the College of Agriculture, Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering, College of Education, Health and Human Development and Gallatin College MSU will graduate at 1:30 p.m. with the processional beginning at 1:10 p.m. Charles S. “Chuck” Johnson, a journalist who covered Montana politics for more than four decades, will receive an MSU honorary doctorate of humane letters during the ceremony. The ceremony is expected to conclude at approximately 3:30 p.m.
