She is now studying at St. Augustine University of Tanzania. HYTES volunteer, Carol, recently asked her a series of questions.  Following are Christina&#8217;s answers.</em></p>
<h3>What was the biggest challenge that you faced while at secondary school?</h3>
<p>The big challenge that I faced during secondary school is the place to live, because my school had no hostel so it costs me so much. I was living to the person whom we agreed that I will serve her with all home activities as the ‘house girl’. After the agreement she accepted, and then I started to work and living to her. Frankly speaking, it was costing me much because all the time I used to work home activities instead of studying. But I had no choices due to the poverty I faced bbbthrough. It reached a time I went to the head master ‘Clamba’ to ask help for solving my problems, unbelievable the school agreed me to stay to the director’s house although it was the fire place like I used before because all home activities left to me as the house girl regardless I am the student. However, I used most of time to work instead of studying. For instance, most of works were feeding pigs and calves not only that but also I was washing vessels and cleaning garden. Frankly, poverty is a poison towards poor family, and most of girls are the one who suffering much than boys. Actually, I accepted to face all of these subtle because I have no choice, but I thank God because He give me the power and ability to study hard in order I could achieve my goals. Although these situation was hindered me in another way because it led my results in studying to be not so much good as I expected  in  form four results. Surely, it was a big challenge to me.</p>
<h3>While you were completing form four and six, where were you living and who were you living with?</h3>
<p>After completing form four and six, I was living in Morogoro region with irrelative woman who was living in a lend room. Her work was selling some food therefore I was the one who serving the cafeteria with low wage or sometime no payment if there is no profit.  She paid me 500/= Tsh per day as a salary. But frankly I thank God because I use to keep that money until my form six results were out, then I used it as to pay tuition fees although it was not enough and buying some books and pen. The woman was good to me and she was very happy with my success because she didn’t expect that.  And, I do visit her at least to help some activities if I had time.</p>
<h3>Do you think that secondary school is more challenging for girls or boys, and why?</h3>
<p>Yes, in secondary school is more challenging particularly girls especially for schools have no hostels. Girls have no time to study than boys, because once they reach at home are required to do some activities instead of studying. Therefore, through a day she works then during night she become tired and sleep without studying and that’s why people say boys are cleverer than girls although the slogan is not valuable. Traditionally, in Tanzania boys are not allowed to do home activities rather than playing, resting and studying. This culture is practiced in many societies although now days people become aware and educated then they left away some cultures which are oppressive to girls. However, boys have enough time to study and resting which make them concentrate on the one thing than girls hence their good results become well than we girls. Surely, it is a challenge to girls because girls fail to perform well in their studies.</p>
<h3>Is there an attitude that boys are better at school? If there is, how has this affected you in your schooling?</h3>
<p>Yes! This is a constructive idea led by our culture. Because since our beloved fathers they thought that boys are superior to girls due to masculine, but now days you may find girls are more intelligent than boys. This attitude has affected me in the sense that, most of teachers like boys than girls in the sense that are good especially in science subjects. Frankly, I was very furious if I find a teacher proud for boys. I promise to campaign in order the society could take away this idea, because there is no different between girls and boys. And sometimes girls are very intelligent than boys.</p>
<h3>Could you describe for us a normal day of school as a form six student, to let us picture what your life was like? Give as much detail as you can, for example, when did you get up, what did you eat, how did you get to school and how long did it take, what classes did you have, what was the schedule of the school day, were there any school activities other than classes in a day? What did you do after school from when you left until you went to bed?</h3>
<p>A normal day of school; always when I was in form six, I usually woke up at 5:00 o’clock in the morning, where I had self preparation and 6:00 am I was going to school because 6:45 am, all students were required to take number or roll call. And 7:00am, the bell rang and we start to clean the school surroundings. At 8:00am, the bell rang again where we gather assembly ground ready to hear some announcements and then we enter into the classes from 8:30am. At 10:30am, we had a break where used to rest and those have money they bought some spices to eat while others who have no cash like me we used that break to play and sometime to rest in the class waiting for another period to start. Although some other students were used this time to rush out for fetching some water nearly houses in order they could wash out their face avoiding fall into sleep. Then after a while break we entered in the class at 11:00am up to 2:30pm, which was the end of the daily class then we become free to go home. For my side when I was in form five I asked for school hostel then I got it therefore it was easy for me to go hostel and get my daily meal. There after, I used the rest time to wash my uniforms for the next day. But I was resting a bit because of having many home works to do. At 4:00pm, I went reading room to study and searching some materials. For this I was only using two hours, then at 6:00pm it was the time for cleaning our hostel and other surrounding around the hostel. This cleanness took place up to 7:00pm. At 7:15pm I used to take supper up to 8:00pm. There after 8:15pm, we shared words of God and prays. After prayers, it was reading time up to 10:30pm. According to our school regulations once it reaches this time, all light should be off and all students are supposed to be on their bed. This was not allowed to any one lighting without permission. However, I had no time to play especially during reading time, because if you play you could loose during exams or the light will be put off while you have nothing in the head.</p>
<h3>How did you spend your time on weekends while you were in form six?</h3>
<p>Real on Saturday, I spend my time at the tuition centre known as ‘Jamhuri’ where I used to pay only 500/- per exam. Different students from other schools were meeting together and finally we competed during exams. And the student who will score higher mark was give gift like books and exercises books. However, every Saturday we had this competitions therefore it was a good thing for me as it pushed my efforts to study in order I could score good marks. Frankly, I thank God because it reaches time when the organizer of the tuition selected me and other two students who scored high marks to attend freely. I was very proud to be a good girl before others students. On Sunday, most of time I used in the church, praying and sometime sharing words of God with other disciples. Then after the holly mass end, the rest of time I was used to wash my clothes and making body exercises like running. Then, I rest until dinner time. The weekend was very different from holiday, because during holiday most of time I used to make visitation to an orphans to play and sometime I was teaching them. Real, I felt better to be with them.</p>
<h3>What is the biggest challenge that you face in university?</h3>
<p>The big challenge I face in the University is lack of some equipments that could facilitate my studies, for instance laptop, and printer. This is a big problem to me because it costs so much especially paying a lot of money for printing works. As you know the way of studying in the university is quiet different from secondary school, because in secondary level most of notices were provided by our teacher. But in university level a lecturer is not the one who fetch some notices for students but only students are the one who find and make notices for them. So it becomes very difficulty to search materials through internet if you don’t have laptop or computer. With much understandings, our near stationeries are very costful because one work could be printed by a cost of 10,000/- up to 15,000/- if an assignment is big. Actually to buy a laptop costs 800,000/- up to 1,000,000/- which for me is a dream to get that amount but I will be very happy if one day I will own laptop in my study at the university. Hope  you can help me on this.</p>
<h3>Where are you living while you study?</h3>
<p>I am living in the university campus. But according to the regulations all first year are allowed to live in but other continuous students are suppose to lend off campus hostels which are much cost. So, this problem I know will face me during my second year studies.</p>
<h3>What is your career plan once you finish university?</h3>
<p>I want to be a teacher because I real like that career. Not only to be a teacher at secondary but I plan to study hard in order can I be a lecturer at the university level.</p>
<h3>What is your biggest dream for the future?</h3>
<p>My future dreams are, to make sure that I help orphans and other disadvantages children particularly those coming from poor families to give them education in order they can fulfill their dreams. I will try my best to accomplish this dream because it cries in my heart especially once I see street children are suffering. The dream emerged since I was at Mawengi secondary school. Surely, street children are suffering much because some of them are being raped and other tortured unnecessary. Another dream is to have a good family with good husband who will be ready to support my ambitions. I know God will give as I wish. Finally to have a good life that will make me to forget strong challenges that faced me.</p>
<p>Frankly, I am so grateful for you and HYTES because without your support I don’t know where I could be now. But your help and advice has made me to be a human before other human being. I still believe that you will support me until I fulfill my ambitions. God bless you copious although I have nothing to pay back but receive my thankful from the bottom of my heart.</p>

<p>My future dreams are, to make sure that I help orphans and other disadvantages children particularly those coming from poor families to give them education in order they can fulfill their dreams. I will try my best to accomplish this dream because it cries in my heart especially once I see street children are suffering. The dream emerged since I was at Mawengi secondary school. Surely, street children are suffering much because some of them are being raped and other tortured unnecessary. Another dream is to have a good family with good husband who will be ready to support my ambitions. I know God will give as I wish. Finally to have a good life that will make me to forget strong challenges that faced me.</p>
<p>Frankly, I am so grateful for you and HYTES because without your support I don’t know where I could be now. But your help and advice has made me to be a human before other human being. I still believe that you will support me until I fulfill my ambitions. God bless you copious although I have nothing to pay back but receive my thankful from the bottom of my heart.</p>

<p>Christina had probably the hardest life of anyone I have ever met, old or young.  Christina Keny was born in a small Tanzanian village, but was abandoned by her mother at age 6.  She was close to her father, but both her father and stepmother were dead before she was 10.  She was cared for by her elderly grandparents until the age of 14 when tradition and her grandparents arranged her marriage to an older man for her bride-price.  Christina  ran away  to Dar es Salaam where she found a relative, but the  husband was abusive and they  contracted for her to marry, again for a bride-price.  She ran away again, and had nowhere to live,  “I felt it was accidental for me to be born.”</p>
<p>Christina found refuge at Mawengi Secondary School in Dar es Salaam, started Form One (about grade eight) and met Glenna McGregor and Carol Frost.   Glenna and Carol had both graduated from U of A and were volunteer teaching at Mawengi School for the summer.</p>
<p>Glenna says of Christina, “ That was the state of things when we first arrived and she missed a lot of school and was silent in class, staring out the window.  While we were there she found somewhere to live, and was much happier. She started coming to school regularly and participating keenly in class debates and discussions and was one of the best for completing her homework. However, she still lived a HUGE distance from the school, out by the airport.   It took us a couple of hours to get there by car, let alone by bus. She was never late and always came to school, even on Saturdays, and would often stay late so she could use the books in the library.”  Of course, school fees were a problem, being as much as most families make in a year in Tanzania, and Christina did not have enough money for food, let alone fees.</p>
<p>HYTES paid Christina’s fees for the  next 5 years.  Christina  has now completed Form 6, is at university and wants to be  a teacher,  maybe at the secondary level, but possibly at a university.  She also plans to give back to her country, “ My aim is to help women and children who are being undermined in their rights:  educational, social, political and economic.”</p>

<p>Edward’s story of personal loss and difficulties in pursuing an education is similar to a great many young  people in sub-Saharan Africa today.  Edward was a child in rural Tanzania, happy in a farming household with his parents and 6 siblings.   Primary schooling was attainable in government schools that were free, and simple food was supplied by the farm.</p>
<p>In 2001, when Edward was nine, all that changed when his mother died of snakebite.</p>
<p><em>“Life became more difficult for us because I myself loved my mother a lot more than anything in this world. My mother was the only one who new my problems… but my father used to give me courage.”</em></p>
<p>Serious difficulties developed three years later when his father also died.</p>
<p><em> “We started living a very hard life, walking on bear legs, lack of food and basic needs…I never gave up, I continued with my studies although more difficulties were increasing.”  </em></p>
<p>The family was split;  Edward and two sisters, Martina and Esther, were taken in by a kind aunt in Dar es Salaam.  Edward completed his primary education, but his aunt could not even feed her extended family, let alone pay secondary school fees for any of them. (Secondary fees are equal to the average annual income in Tanzania).  So Edward stayed home for a year.  When Martina and Esther also needed secondary fees, the three of them luckily found Mawengi School which generously allowed some students to stay in class, even if the hope of fee payment was slim.</p>
<p>However, when the school was no longer able to pay its teachers, the Nobo children were chased away.  Two recent U of Alberta grads, Carol Frost and Glenna McGregor, were volunteer teachers at Mawengi school when they were surprised to see their classes reduced to only a few students as the non-paying ones were literally chased away for not paying their fees.  When Carol and Glenna returned to Edmonton, they found donors to support the school, the teachers were paid, the Nobos returned to class, and in 2008, all three, Edward, Martina and Esther, became HYTES students until they all graduated.  Now Edward is in university, and Martina and Esther hope to be admitted soon.</p>
<p>These students exemplify our HYTES students.  They have the ability, the energy and the determination.  We just give them a chance.</p>

<p>The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) on Monday ended the three week strike paving way for reopening of schools.</p>
<p>KNUT Secretary General David Okutta called off the strike and asked teachers to resume classes on Tuesday at 8am.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are grateful that the government considered our demands,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>KNUT National Chairman, Wilson Sossion said the proposal by the government to pay Sh13.5 billion was acceptable and therefore teachers should resume work.</p>
<p>On Sunday, the government signed a deal with KNUT, in which Ksh13.5 billion would be paid in lump sum in October as opposed to phases and backdated to July 1, 2012.</p>
<p>KNUT Deputy Secretary General Xavier Nyamu said that the return to work formula stipulates that no teachers would be victimised for participating in the strike.</p>
<p>Mr Nyamu also said the salary harmonisation to that of civil servants will be implemented as agreed.</p>
<p>Education minister Mutula Kilonzo who attended the press conference said the government will ensue that the return-to-work formula agreed upon by the two parties will be adhered to.<strong></strong></p>
<p>Mr Kilonzo also said that teachers will not be victimised for participating in the strike.</p>
<p>After calling off the strike, KNUT said it expects to be involved in discussions on the fate of national examination.</p>
<p>The lowest paid teachers receive wages of Ksh13,750 about $130 (£91) a month, leaving them to struggle to pay the bills. With the deal, the lowest paid teacher will take home a basic salary of Ksh19,323 up from Ksh13,750 while the highest paid will earn Ksh144,928, up from Ksh120,270.</p>
<p>The teachers will also get hardship and special schools allowances at 30 per cent and 10 per cent of their basic salaries respectively.The two allowances had been frozen by the government in June 2009.</p>

This year, 820,255 Standard Eight pupils will sit the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams in more than 23,000 schools countrywide.<br />
Another 437,782 will sit the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education test in more than 7,000 schools.<br />

<p><strong>HYTES – Our Story</strong></p>
<p>Hi my name is Harold Pliszka and I’m on the board of HYTES otherwise known as Helping Youth Through Educational Scholarships.  The idea started in 2004 while vacationing in East Africa .  We also met with my wife’s cousin who was living and volunteering in Dar es Salaam.</p>
<p>All through the trip, we kept meeting young worldly people who desperately wanted to go to school.  Primary school is government funded but secondary students must pay for schooling in Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia and there is subsequently a huge enrolment decline.  Annual school fees range from around $225 in Zambia to a more than $400 in Kenya.  While these amounts might not seem like much, they are often more than a family might earn in one year.</p>
<p>While in Kenya, we met with friends and HYTES cofounders, Pam and Eric Amulaku.  Pam is from Alberta and Eric is Kenyan. Eric had taken a young boy under his wing and they became his unofficial parents. That boy’s name is Goal Akongo and he is now a man with an incredible drive to lead his and other communities.  He works in Kenya and Sudan and helped with famine relief in Somalia. We were walking through the Kibera slum in Nairobi and Goal said that Africans should be providing for the world and not taking.  He told me that they just need the seed and that they can grow to improve their countries.  Goal now runs our program in Kenya.</p>
<p>When we got back to Calgary, it occurred to me that paying school fees would be one single thing that would have a profound impact on an individual young person.  That way we would be providing the ‘seed’ for students to then help themselves, their families and their communities. Since the required infrastructure was minimal and we weren’t building schools, I thought this would be a relatively easy task.</p>
<p>The original Guatemala program came to us from a young woman who volunteered at an indigenous school in rural Guatemala.  That school was founded by massacre survivor and human rights activist, Jesus Tecu.  Jesus says, “Our children are the seed of the future, we consider that a good education for them is the only manner in which to combat intolerance, construct true peace, and improve the quality of life for our communities”.  HYTES is grateful that we can help that school by paying $400 annual scholarships for a number of students each year.HYTES is 100% volunteer run, we currently have three board members in Calgary and one in Edmonton. 97% of all money raised goes directly to student scholarships.  We have trustworthy and caring representatives in each African country. They collect applications, meet with students and their families and then follow up with students throughout the year.  Our reps are not Canadians, they are people who grew up and live in their countries of origin and they know their way around.  We send them money for scholarships and they take it directly to schools with the students and get signatures from headmasters signifying that their fees are paid in full for the entire school year.</p>
<p>The rural school in Guatemala and one school in Tanzania act as HYTES Agents and we get a signed contract each year.  These schools can select the students, and money for scholarships is sent directly to the schools.</p>
<p>We are currently paying school fees for 2012 and will have provided more than 600 scholarships since 2005.</p>

<p>While we have received three $20,000 grants from the Alberta Government, the bulk of our fundraising comes from friends and families of HYTES supporters.  We need to raise approximately $60,000 each year to maintain scholarship numbers and currently have enough of a sustainability fund safely invested to cover one program year.</p>
<p>Marketing comes from our website, blog, facebook page and twitter account.  We have also managed to get a fair amount of press over the years.</p>
<p>We can accept donations by cheque, cash, credit card and use <a href="http://www.canadahelps.org/CharityProfilePage.aspx?CharityID=d90010" target="_blank">CanadaHelps.org</a> for online transactions.  We are in the process of setting up with <a href="http://www.gifttool.com" target="_blank">GiftTool.com</a> so we can utilize our own merchant credit cards, provide instant tax receipting and also to help us with donor management.</p>

<p><strong>HYTES – Our Story</strong></p>
<p>Hi my name is Harold Pliszka and I’m on the board of HYTES otherwise known as Helping Youth Through Educational Scholarships.  The idea started in 2004 while vacationing in East Africa .  We also met with my wife’s cousin who was living and volunteering in Dar es Salaam.</p>
<p>All through the trip, we kept meeting young worldly people who desperately wanted to go to school.  Primary school is government funded but secondary students must pay for schooling in Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia and there is subsequently a huge enrolment decline.  Annual school fees range from around $225 in Zambia to a more than $400 in Kenya.  While these amounts might not seem like much, they are often more than a family might earn in one year.</p>
<p>While in Kenya, we met with friends and HYTES cofounders, Pam and Eric Amulaku.  Pam is from Alberta and Eric is Kenyan. Eric had taken a young boy under his wing and they became his unofficial parents. 		<title>HYTES 6th Annual Summer Fun Event &#8211; A Great Success!</title>

<p>Competing with beautiful weather, last minute camping trips and out of town plans, we made the executive decision to go ahead and hope that our months of preparation would pay off for our students in Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, and Guatemala.</p>
<p><strong>And with $7600 raised</strong>, we think we made the right decision!</p>
<p>Apparently this is a last minute culture.  Not only do people RSVP only days prior (if<br />
at all) but auction donations also poured in at the final hour.  We scrambled to write bid sheets for dozens of generous last minute donations including a basket of fresh vegetables from someone’s local garden!</p>
<p>A great part of our success can be attributed to Wesjet for their donation of 2 tickets to anywhere they fly.  We raffled these off and the lucky winner told us she is soon to be married and will use the tickets for her honeymoon!</p>
<p>Another big contributor, Fresh Kitchen <a href="http://www.freshkitchen.ca/">http://www.freshkitchen.ca/</a>, donated the<br />
fabulous food including dips to die for.</p>
<p>And to go with the food, many kids (and a few adults) enjoyed a lemonade slushie made in a pedal powered blender. Heather Hendrie of Powered by the People brought her blender bike and taught us how to use our own energy, via pedalling, to blend a refreshing drink.  If you are really ambitious you could actually power your whole event including the band.  Check it out….<a href="http://www.poweredbythepeople.ca/">http://www.poweredbythepeople.ca/</a>.</p>
<p>We also enjoyed the beautiful voice of singer Trish Evans <a href="http://triciaevans.com/">http://triciaevans.com/</a> who not only sang but helped make announcements and kept the auction bidding going.</p>
<p>For the kids we had crafts, face painting and balloon artistry by Art Star Creations.  The face painting  was so intricate and detailed &#8211; truly little works of art – that even my 14 year old had hers done.</p>
<p>Finally, a general massive THANK YOU to the volunteers, all the donors and most of all the people who came out to the event and generously purchased and donated so that our HYTES kids can continue another year in school and make a difference in their communities, countries and the world.</p>

<p>I am Bhakti Behere, Economics student at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton. I first met Carol Frost – a HYTES volunteer – at a HYTES booth on campus. In the beginning, I didn’t know the meaning of “HYTES”, but Carol explained that it meant “Helping Youth Through Educational Scholarships”. This description got my attention and made me want to find out more about what HYTES does. As a university student, I believe that every youth must complete his or her high school and have the opportunity to enroll in university.</p>
<p>HYTES is a Canadian, non-profit organization that raises funds to deliver scholarships and provide education to students in Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Guatemala. HYTES helps youths from developing countries to explore their reams of education. To do this, they organize fundraising events that are always exciting and entertaining.</p>
<p>Today, I am a new HYTES volunteer. I am enjoying all the events with the organization, especially working with Pam, Jenn, Kirsten, Marisa, Karen, Eric, and Maluk. I have volunteered for one fundraising event – Kokopelli in Concert&#8230;. reaching new HYTES on October 25, 2009 at McKernan Baptist Church. I went to HYTES meetings and was assigned task of promotion with Pam for the Kokopelli in Concert event. We made posters and tickets, and of course promoted the event on Facebook. Working with HYTES was a relaxing time away from all my schoolwork and our hard work paid off – Kokopelli in Concert was a huge success for HYTES. While HYTES raised funds for education, they also shared beautiful African music.</p>
<p>My first experience working with HYTES was very positive. Meeting new people and doing different activities is great for students who want to have enjoyable social experiences. HYTES shows how Canadian organizations care for developing nations. HYTES is like a family – anyone who starts working with them becomes part of that family, makes good friends, and gains real world experience through their involvement in fundraising activities.</p>
<p>I still am a volunteer with HYTES and believe I will be for a lifetime.</p>
