Venue category icon added on more screens

The venue category icon, which provides an easy way to distinguish the venue type (for example a cafe from a restaurant), has been added on more screens. You can now find it on all single venue views, as well as on the tip views.

Network name can now be added optionally on a tip

Apart from including the wi-fi password on a tip via the app, you can now include the network name (SSID) as well, just in case there are more than one networks around. The network name is completely optional, you may leave the text-box blank. However it is definitely a useful piece of information for your fellow 4sqwifi users!

4sqwifi app – iTunes link (free!)

iTunes 10.5.2 includes several improvements for iTunes Match and fixes an audio distortion problem when playing or importing certain CDs.

Update via Software Update or Download

The latest app update has brought us a universal binary, and a new feature called “Cover Stories”.

Don’t forget that if you are already using it on the iPad, you can create a Flipboard account, and then sync your items/accounts/preferences with iPhone.

The application has been completely rewritten in Xcode (obj-c), and it can now take full advantage of all iOS 5 capabilities. You will notice it immediately upon updating, as overall performance has been significantly increased.

Better and more relevant results

The discovery algorithm has been tuned, thus the app is now showing more nearby venues, as well as more relevant results (only venues with a maximum of 10km distance).

Map view for venues

Apart from the venues list, you can now view all venues on the Map view.

Moreover, tapping on a venue directly from the Map view takes you to the single venue view.

Added GPS accuracy label

You can now check out the current GPS horizontal accuracy reading (in metres). A lower value means a better location accuracy for the device. Remember that everything below 200m is a pretty good value.

Direct access to Google Maps directions

While on a single venue view, you can now tap on the venue’s pin and get direct access to Maps.app (Google Maps) directions. Showing your current location as the starting point, and the venue’s location as the destination. Awesome and pretty handy, just try it!

Wi-Fi passwords are now selectable

One of the user suggestions was to be able to copy/paste a Wi-Fi password from the available venue tips. Done!

You will also notice on the screenshot above, the blue arrow icon that has been added. Just tap it to get to the single tip view, which offers some tip meta data (author, date posted) and tip photo if applicable.

Add Wi-Fi password directly from the app

Another user suggestion was to make the application more interactive. You can now search for a venue, and add directly from within the app the Wi-Fi password. The search brings all nearest venues within a 1km radius.

After that you just simply select the venue and type the Wi-Fi password. Don’t worry about the rest of the tip text, the app takes care of it, so that it will be immediately discoverable by all other 4sqwifi users.

Logout from Foursquare / switch account

Just in case you wish to logout from Foursquare, or switch a Foursquare account, visit the device’s Settings app. Turn the logout switch to ON, and restart the 4sqwifi app (you need to close it from the multi-tasking bar).

Upon 4sqwifi restart you will be prompted to input your Foursquare username/password.

4sqwifi is still free, so download/update and enjoy!
