5. Ron Perlman – Hellboy

Jake Garber, the makeup artist explained that Perlman’s makeup was all foam prosthetic pieces, including his pecs, a skull cap, and full-facial prosthetic that covered everything except his lower lip.

6. Benicio Del Toro – The Wolfman

Making Benicio become Wolfman by including all the terrifying details was the artwork of six-time Oscar winner Rick Baker. He actually applied loose hair on Benicio’s face and took him three hours daily to get him ready for the scenes.

7. Robin Williams – Mrs. Doubtfire

Mrs. Doubtfire is a 1993 American comedy film starring Robin Williams who played a role of a 60-year old lady. Making Williams sink in the character special touches were needed which took 4.5 hours a day, but in the end Academy Award for Best Makeup made it all worth while.

8. Marlon and Shawn Wayans – White Chicks

Transforming African-American brothers Marlon and Shawn Wayans into blond, blue-eyed hotel heiresses for the 2004 comedy, ‘White Chicks’ took over seven hours a day, per actor. The process was long and arduous, and included making plaster casts of the brothers’ faces.

9. Ralph Fiennes – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Rowling described Voldemort as “the most evil wizard for hundreds and hundreds of years”. She elaborated that he is a “raging psychopath, devoid of the normal human responses to other people’s suffering”, and creating that look took 2.5 hours every day.

With the help of Oscar-nominated makeup artists Michele Burke and Mike Smithson, Mike Myers went from Hollywood actor to ’60s British playboy Austin Powers faster than you can say, ‘Do I make you horny, baby?’

Mark Boyle, 30, has lived for the past 12 months as a true ‘freeconomist’, leading a self-sufficient lifestyle in a caravan in Timsbury, near Bath, growing his own food and reusing junk that people have thrown away.

He says he has not spent a penny and has become a happier person, and today pledged to continue living without cash.

He cycles everywhere, his phone only takes incoming calls, he has solar-powered showers and cleans his teeth with toothpaste made from washed-up cuttlefish bones.

He either grows or forages for his food and gets his clothes from bins or from the Freecycle website.

Mr Boyle blogs online about his life using a solar-powered laptop on wi-fi time he earns in return for carrying out odd jobs on a local farm.

“Its been the happiest year of my life, and I will continue indefinitely, so I do not see any reason to return to a money-orientated world,” he said.

“It has been really liberating. It does have challenges but I do not have the stresses of bank accounts, bills, traffic jams and long hours in a job I don’t enjoy.

“The most difficult part has been socialising with friends, I have missed that aspect.
“Instead of going to the pub I make camp fires, play music or go for walks.”

Anyone can make up an ultra-long address, but Craig apparently uses this one. Thank goodness for email clients that store and autofill addresses, because at 345 characters, this would be a pain to type every time.

Well poo-poo to that! I also found it frustrating that there are so few good games for the iPad that are free, and since I had a really hard time finding some good quality games that were free I decided to spread my search out into the tubes of the internet, and I found some real gems!

Godfinger

This is one of those games that just hits the mark of what the iPad was designed for. The graphics are beautiful, and all other aspects of the game meld together perfectly.

Your job is to run your own, customizable planet in which you need to make sure your “followers” are rested, and busy doing work, like farming and worshiping your greatness. This is perfect for Farmville’rs and casual gamers alike.

Harbor Master

When you take a look at this game, you instantly think of Flight Control but this game is quite different. Harbor Master is a line-drawing game, and this time with you drawing paths so boats can dock.

The tricky part is, once you get them docked and unloaded, they once again have to venture out into the harbor to leave the screen, and it gets difficult to manage all the traffic!

Implode Nature!

Something else that the iPad is made for is physics based games, and Implode Nature is one of those games that will tickle that itch.

Its basically a bit taste of IUGO’s full Implode game, but besides that fact, it gives you 10 buildings to blow up, which is a plus.

The chalk themed graphics are really neat, and it looks really great on the iPad. You can also get the full game.

Originally created by Australian artist and designer Yiying Lu, the image depicts red birds hoisting an apparently sanguine white whale from the sea against a pale blue background, together with the words: “Too many tweets! Please wait a moment and try again.”

Twitter’s use of the image dates back to May 2009, when during a sustained period of outages caused by a popularity spike, Twitter’s founders decided that their error message featuring a cat in front of a computer was a bit too jokey and unprofessional for what was fast becoming one of the web’s hottest companies.

The implausibly named Biz Stone went to illustration service iStockphoto and came across the image - originally called Lifting Up A Dreamer and designed as an ecard by Yiying Lu for an overseas friend while she was still a student at Sydney’s University of Technology. Deciding that the image represented a great illustration of the concept of a team working together to overcome a huge challenge, Biz Stone reputedly paid a few dollars for the license to use the image as a stock content purchase.

Lifting Up A Dreamer was an instant hit, dubbed the Fail Whale by Twitter’s more enthusiastic users, and among hardcore Twitterati it is more cherished than the company’s official blue bird logo. The Fail Whale has become Twitter’s alternative mascot, a simple and cute image that undercuts the increasingly professional image of the site.

Fail Whale fans started a community and produced t-shirts, some of which they sent to Twitter’s offices, in a bid to promote Yiying Lu’s work - because even though the Fail Whale had become hugely popular, the artist herself did not stand to make any more than the few dollars for which Twitter had purchased the license to use the image.

As a result of the campaign, Yiying Lu has been able to produce thousands of mugs, t-shirts and other Fail Whale merchandise, and the Whale itself has become indelibly associated with Twitter’s community. Although the site’s founders have broadly supported the promotion of Lu’s work, it is fair to say that there are mixed feelings about this. One Twitter founder, Evan Williams, even tweeted “Mixed feelings” on receipt of the t-shirts that were sent to Tweet HQ.

These mixed feelings are understandable - Twitter are still in the process of working out how to derive some sort of income from the huge user-base they have attained, and would rather keep outages and downtime to a bare minimum. They would like the Fail Whale to be a rare sight on computer screens across the world as their servers are adapted and expanded to handle ever greater capacity and deliver consistent stability.

But when even a site’s error message can become a loved and cherished brand, you know that a company has made it to the forefront of people’s consciousness.
