Ever since I was appointed as the head of graphical unit for VISION 2010, frankly I am very surprised of the rank appointed to me myself since I don't have any skills nor knowledge in graphical design. So this would be quite a challenge for me.

Regardless, I just took on the job.

Unlike any other previous versions of VISION, the editorial team had finally decided to do something revolutionary for the 16th edition of the magazine itself. Instead of the smaller form factor A3 size like what out seniors did, we did something - different.

It will be in B5 format, the standard format for the major publications out there.

Instead of B & W format, every page in this book will be printed out in colors.

The paper quality had changed from normal paper to glossy paper.

Which means? More cost and more work.
Unlike any other graphical team in previous editions, this will bring out the hell in us. Literally. And on that moment itself I started to look for tutorials in graphical editing. This is where I see the marvel of Photoshop itself.

http://www.facebook.com/#!/album.php?aid=177288&id=708905451

The link above is all about my works for the cover itself. Which already been changed for 10+ times actually which involves various art forms such as vector, abstract, and finally typography. Why typography you asked? Initially the typography entry was not meant to be the cover. Its was my attempt the try out some other styles. But I like how typography can bring out the whole impression of the magazine itself.
(Note : The cover ended out differently from what I imagined)

Thanks to the president of Pre-U council, I have one of my friend, Gary as my assistant since designing all pages in such a short time would consume alot of time and effort. He is very helpful in inspiring ideas and some forms of graphical suggestions. Although in the end only few of his designs are finalized, I appreciate his help.

But still, we still have to cope with studies and examinations ourselves. Which slows down every single process tremendously. This is a project where everyone had committed a lot and I wouldn't wish everyone's efforts in vain just because of the graphical team ourselves. Deep inside my heart I blamed myself for not helping much in all the designing. August, what a tough month for the editorial team.

Just make sure we do things quick, one of the member in editorial board brought his laptop to school everyday and the small room beside staffroom became out temporary editorial room. That little room ever since became our secret hideout and everyone played their own role in creating the masterpiece.

Day by day, the workload had been reduced and everyone finally can take a break after 5 days of hustling. The editorial team looks like a zombie, but we're cheering for ourselves for completing this. Kudos to all of us. There are arguing and quarreling here and there, but as soon as everything done, we just keep it aside. Afterall our aim is to complete it ASAP.

Well, now it was launched, and hopefully the sales figure goes well too.
Regardless the outcome, it was a good experience and nice working with you guys.

Credits section :-
School authorities
All the sponsors and contributors
Everyone from the editorial team
Everyone from the graphical team.
& last but not least, my love. <3

Daily FML

- Check your product code and region hardware code (Eg : RM-356 0573786)
- By using the product code you found, search for the firmware/custom firmware that match with the code.
- Get JAF.
- And some pills in case you get a cardiac arrest when you accidentally brick your phone.
- Switch your firmware without hassel.

The following guide is the guide for original FW flashing. As some CFW flashing method is different, but starting from Step 3, everything is the same.

STEP 1: Let's get started. First, download Navifirm from any modding sites you usually visit. Look for your FW and download your desired one with the codes you found in your phone. Make sure everything is correct to avoid conflict with your phone later. Tick everything and download all of them. Keep them in a folder for further use later

STEP 2 : Before moving on to JAF, move all your downloaded firmware to C:\Program Files\Nokia\Pheonix\Products\<yourhardwareregioncode>yourproductcode\ Paste. If you dont have the Pheonix and the hardware region code folder, just create one. </yourhardwareregioncode>

STEP 3 : Turn on JAF in your computer and move on to BB5 tab. Untick CRT 308 but tick Manual Flash, Dead USB like what I did on the above screenshot. Click Use INI and wait for a couple of seconds until a you saw a pop out, choose your hardware region code paired with your phone model.

STEP 4 : After all you done so far, you should see something like above. Now turn off your phone and connect it to your PC with USB cable. Click the FLASH button and immediately press the power button once! Now sit back and wait for the process to go on. Meanwhile, pray for your phone to work after this.

If nothing gone wrong, you should see a Done! in JAF after the process is finished and your phone is in Local mode. Unplug the USB cable and restart. Make sure to do a soft reset after rebooting by tapping *#7370# on your phone dial.

DONE! Now you'll have your 5800XM alive again! Meanwhile do check out my review on 5800XM too!

#unexpected; I am going to watch Wonder Girls LIVE in Malaysia!

Talking about one of the world's heritage, frankly I don't feel like walking in something historic. The whole town is greatly restructured so the real authentic of feel of a culture rich town is replaced by repaired and repainted buildings. Most of the historical buildings are turned into tourist attraction and souvenirs shops, there's actually not much of authentic peranakan residence left in the main town of Melaka. From what I had been informed by my friends, there are a few museums of the peranakan left their doors open for visitors but I don't get the chance to visit there simply because this is a one day trip.

Oh well, since my family main objective here is to have some food hunting and souvenir spree, I guess I will leave till the next time I visit this place as backpacker.

The Geographer cafe.

The money-sucking trishaw. Usually found all around in Melaka equipped with flashy decorations and sometimes high tech stuffs.

Found this gallery by coincidence in the heart of Melaka Town. But I just love how the way its decorated.

A Hokkien community center at Jonker street. You will be surprised what happened in there if you are going there at nightime.

A random street snap of Melaka Street.

Thousand layered pancake from Nadaje. Expensive but satisfactory in every bite.

I can't say this wall graffiti is an culture heritage, but I like the way how it is portrayed. At least its better than those graffiti seen in KL.

We had our dinner in a peranakan restaurant finally after trying out all the overrated stuffs in Melaka. At least now I know what is the taste of homemade cendol with Gula Melaka. If compared with other cendol I tasted so far, this particular cendol have a slightly alcoholic taste because of the homemade gula melaka. But if and only the ingredients used are fresher, this cendol is actually very unique.

My brother and me. Posted for the lulz.

Some Oh Chien (Oyster Omelet) stall found in the night markets of Jonker Street. But I didn't try them because there is another recommendation by my brother.

Before heading back to KL, we had our final pitstop at an ohchien stall located in a foodcourt near Madam King's shoplot. With RM6, you can get a plate of omelet packed with fresh oysters. But note the large crowd that are waiting for it, so get there as early as possible.

Conclusion

I guess that's all for my 1 day trip to Melaka dated 18062010. There's still much places and great food to uncover. (thou most of them sucks) But I will leave it till my next visit. Till then.

Random.

Its been a while since Nokia released their first ever touchscreen mobile phones. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, also dubbed as 'Tube" is one of the unit for Nokia to test out how well accepted is touchscreen devices in the market. Surprisingly, it turned out well. But the most important selling point in 5800XpressMusic is it performs well as a smartphone and its packed with features. Plus a wide community around the world who constantly release tons of applications and modification. In the end? One big success.

OS
A notable breakthrough in Symbian S60 platform, Nokia 5800XpressMusic is among the first device to implement Symbian S60 version 5 (aka Symbian 9.4. More info about S60 please read here). Cater more to touchscreen devices to Nokia, the UI is definitely more user friendly compared to previous versions.

Large key buttons, responsive touch inputs. But slightly sluggish transition effect is quite a letdown. (As per in original v50 stock firmware). A fewer more improvements has been made on newer firmware, including kinetic scrolling which I take it as a pro in 5800XM. There's still some minor lag issues and hanging issues here and there, but it usually caused by end user themselves. The landscape and portrait switching is quite smooth providing your theme effect is off. Don't expect the accelerometer to perform well in this phone like what you experience in iPhone. Although there is some apps/games that supports accelerometer sensor, it sometimes acts differently (over sensitive etc etc).

Build Quality and Design

As a candybar touchscreen handset, 5800 XpressMusic did fulfill a few criteria I need. It feels solid and sleek when held in hands, but can be bulky to certain individuals. I guess this is pretty subjective. The finishing on the casing is glossy which is nice to look at, but fingerprints and grease tends to stick on it. Overall design its ergonomic in my opinion.

Like any other phones, It has a volume/zoom rocker on the right side of the phone, a lock/unlocker in the middle right, and a camera button on the bottom right side. On the left side of the phone is where the SIM card and microSD slot is. Covered with 2 plastic side covers, its hard for you not to notice them. But swapping SIM card can be quite a hassle, where you had to remove your back cover and battery, then skew out your SIM card through a hole on the motherboard by using your stylus.(Full Guide on the interior backover). Troublesome you say? Yes it is.

On the top part of this tube, packed with a few stuffs which includes a micro USB slot, a 3.5mm audio jack, charger jack, and a power/profile switch button. Not much surprises on the bottom part. As usual, a microphone and a lanyard slot. As for the surface, an ambient light sensor and a proximity sensor can be seen in between the earpiece and the front camera. There is an touch-sensitive media key below the camera which acts as a fast access to media files. And below the screen, there is the answer, menu/task manager key, and the reject key.

5800XpressMusic also features a high-resolution 360x640 3.2" resistive touchscreen on the phone itself. Surprisingly, the screen contrast and brightness colors did give me a good impression. Images and videos played on the phone itself is crisp and rich in color. As for web browsing, this phone is able to display full page browsing with with text itself. The text is still readable in 100% zoom level but it would be hard to the elderly to read the text on the phone itself.

Still, although the screen looks great in indoor, but when exposed at sunlight, it would be difficult for us to view the screen. Regardless, its consider good enough for average user. I would say its perfect for image and video sharing.

Media and Audio Playback

Dubbed as one of the XpressMusic flagship, it would be a letdown if it couldn't do well on media playback. Hence 5800XM did a really great job in this, where the phone itself have a dedicated audio chip paired with 2 stereo speakers. The speakers are definitely loud and crisp even on maximum volume. And if you're an audiophile, you can always plug in your favorite headphone and amp to enhance the experience.

As for video playback, 5800XM has Realplayer build in which supports MP4/H.263/H.264/WMV/FLV video formats as well as web video streaming. But in order to fully experience the video itself, I suggest you to encode your video in 360x640 mp4 @ 30fps. There is a media sharing featured with the phone, but since I rarely used them so its not appropriate for me to include them in this post.

Talking about camera, I would say, the 3.2 AF camera with Carl Zeiss lens is a huge disappointment itself. Although I modded the phone camera driver and tried my best to put up the best settings, image noise is still present although the photo is snapped on broad daylight. The dual LED provides not much help but works well as a torchlight with the help of 3rd party apps. As for video recoding, just decent.

Some users said removing the back cover will enhance the quality but from what i had done, the difference is negligible. But in the other hand, the stock photo browser is quite good with smooth gliding effect and fast photo retouching. If you're not satisfied with the photo you snap, you can always edit it with the photo editor apps but don't expect too much for it.
(Addon : Nokia Labs released another Photo Browser BETA apps that resembles Cooliris but its performance is sluggish)

If I were to point out the cons on the media experience, I would say that there is a limited number of equalizer to choose with but you are not allowed to create your own equalizer. Plus there is a major bug with the Media player in v50 firmware where you can't refresh your media library no matter what you done.

GPS Performance

Nokia 5800XpressMusic has a build-in GPS receiver with aGPS support. Well, a lot of handsets in the market have GPS receiver build in but what matters is the locking speed of the receiver. In this case, I will start my locking test with my integrated GPS without and with a-GPS support.

Outdoor - In a car without UV protection layer
- Without a-GPS, takes 7~9 minutes to receive a constant lock.
- With a-GPS, takes <5 sec to lock.

Indoor - In a room
- Takes forever to lock. (Red Bar for a long period of time since the signal is distorted. Just a reference.)

Noticed the differences between them? If you don't mind paying 10cents per lock (Malaysian rate per lock), I would say its worth it provided your signal is not distorted by flyovers or underground tunnels. There are 2 GPS software for 5800XM to choose with, Garmin MobileXT and Ovi Maps. Both of them have their pros and cons so its up to the user themself. I will review further about 5800 GPS performance on near future.

Hardware and Software Support.
Featured a 434Mhz ARM 11 processor and 128MB RAM, 5800XM as a smartphone are able to multitask a few apps simultaneously. Since S60 is well accepted around the world, a humongous number of applications and modifications are available for it. Some developers released their apps in their own, some rely on Ovi Stores.

Of course, it works the same as Apple Store. You open the store, browse for your desired apps no matter free apps or paid apps, download and install it to your phone. But there is not much of variety in Ovi stores since the worldwide smartphone market is currently dominated by Apple, RIM, and Android. So software developers are keen to create apps for other OS since the market share is obviously, bigger.

Java and Flash is supported in the phone so you'll have no problem applying them in your phone. There is another coding platform called Python for S60 is also in the phone but I wont spend much time explaining them. Internet browsing is pleasant with 5800XM stock browser especially when comes to kinetic scrolling. Of course, there's always an alternative for browsers such as Opera Mobile 10 for speed browsing (Although buggy) and Skyfire for full flash support (Playing Facebook games on 5800XM? No problemo.)

Contact Book and Messaging.

The contact book is just like the Internet browser, it do supports kinetic scrolling so browsing for contact is as fast as breeze. And it is well organized with various orders. As for messaging, you can key in your text in a few ways, numerical keypad, qwerty keypad, and handwriting support. But surprisingly, the input speed is fast and accurate for keypad typing as well as handwriting support. I can speed write any form of text no matter in English or Chinese, the text displayed is accurate. Which I am really impressed.

Epikcase Review

Epikcase is not common in Malaysia but it is really famous in eBay. You wouldn't expect a phone case that costs around USD5 able to protect your phone that much. It is made out of a substance that resembles a combination of silicon and plastic. It is firm, light, flexible, but yet durable and grease free. Dust and grease doesn't stick on it which is a good news for all of us. The most important is, unlike any other silicon cases, epikcase doesn't absorb sweat that will create some sort of yellowish surface like what you seen on average silicon cases.

And the most important of all, the is no gap in between the phone and the case when the phone is fitted in. The phone is firm, and the holes and spaces are properly cut to ensure the phone functions such as camera and speakers are not blocked. But note here, although it provide a full protection for the phone, some buttons are quite difficult to press when the case is applied. There is a few colors and design to choose with so it is no surprise why this case is well accepted. You can order epikcase from here by the way.

Conclusion
After all, this phone is pretty much dated as it was initially released on November 2009. Surprisingly it is able to match up performance on X6 and N97 Mini. Where the latter have a few advantage. But judging from the pricetag over performance level, 5800XM definitely shines among the other smartphone at the same pricetag. There is also alot of modification and custom firmwares to choose with but I wont include them in this review.

Advantages
- Performance player at an affordable pricetag.
- Media powerhouse
- Large, crisp and vibrant screen perfect for video browsing.
- GPS, WLAN supported.
- A large variety of applications

Disadvantages
- No Physical Keypad
- Weak camera performance
- Buggy OS
- Rather bulky to certain people.
- Tends to be sluggish at times.

Nokia 5800XpressMusic - 8/10
PS : This page will be constantly updated.

[STEAM] FREE PORTAL?

Lomography is a photo with personality. Some people might dislike it since the contrast and color saturation of the photo itself is too much for them. But since the image captured has random yet surprising effect, it became one analogue toy that even amateurs can use it with a single snap of shutter. This is why lomography slowly became one of the must-have equipments for casual point and shoot regulars.

But what in case that you don't own a lomocam? and you still want the cool effects that only exists in lomography? By using Adobe Photoshop CS5, I will explain step by step about how to create a cool vintage looking lomography by using digital photos as a base.

First, Look for a photo you desired and drag it to your Photoshop using Adobe Bridge or just directly open it from your folder. In my case, I taken this photo in Cameron Highland this February. The photo looks impressive in my opinion but it will look better in case i lomo it. So this photo will be used in my tutorial this time.

Lomography often have a black tinted film effects in their photos. To make this kind of effect, first you must create a new layer in your photo by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N in your keyboard or Go to Layers Menu > New > Layer. Name it as Hue Layer and press OK. Leave the other setting as default.

What your need to do next is to fill it with dark color. To do so, go to Edit Menu > Fill. Under Contents option, select black with the blending option set to 25% Hue[1] . Once you get this step done, you should saw a grayish look in your photo. Merge the layer in your background and move on to the next step.

In this step you will be adjusting the color histogram and saturation to give a rich vibrant color to your photo. Oversaturated and sharp images are one of the key features[2] exists in lomography. There are two methods to do so. The first option is according to the image above[3]. As for 2nd option, you'll have to locate the Adjustment panels in your right windows. Select Curves.

You will be looking at something like this once you selected the Curves option. The default is a straight line baseline. There will be 3 channels you need to adjust your images. Red, Green, and Blue. Just adjust the line to a S-shape curve like what I did on top. But still, its a very subjective thing. So adjust it according to your preference until you feel that its okay for you.

The next thing you gonna do is to sharpen up your photo. But first, instead of RGB color, change it to Lab Color mode. To do you you'll have to access to Image > Mode > Lab Color. Once you done that, go to Channels Panel and select the Lightness layer only. After that, select Filter Menu > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask. Adjust the slider accordingly until you are satisfied with the image outcome. Switch the color mode back to RGB and move on to the final step.

Some lomo photos has vignette effect. Under Filter, go to Distort and look for Lens Correction. In the vignette option, move the amount slider to the left side to produce the vignette effect. Personally I like a darker vignette effect so I created 2 layers of vignette with different midpoint settings. Merge all of the layer to complete the image.

In the end, I created something like this after some further color adjustments and contrast settings. If you like a dreamy feel in your image, you can do the following steps in it, Under Filter > Blur > Lens Blur, do the following settings. Of course, it is adjustable.

Depth image : None

Focal Distance : 60

Iris Shape : Triangle

Iris Radius : 14

Blade Curvature : 4

Iris Rotation : 36

Specular Brightness : 0

Specular Threshold : 115

Noise Amount : 0

Noise Distribution : Gaussian

Hope you all can learn more about how to create a lomo effect photo by using Photoshop CS5. Feel free to ask any inquiry about the settings and so on. I will try my best to answer them.

Appendix
Lomography Embassy

"活在当下"

平时电视剧里也看得多了，听得多了，甚至腻了。
不过今天的我，偶尔在一位远方的朋友对我的关心下，想起这句话，觉得这句话很有意思，也觉得这世界原来不是那么灰。

比起其他人，
至少她了解我在想什么。

And this makes no exception for the 1st PC Fair of year 2010 in KLCC. I just couldn't miss the chance to work in this grand event. As for this quarter of PC Fair, I worked as one of the promoter for Inter-Asia Tech.

Note : This is going to be very long. So prepare your coffee.

Day #1 - Pre PC Fair

Most of the part-timers for PC Fair work for 3 days only. But for Inter-Asia, the male promoters have to come over to setup the booth and some product briefing. Frankly, this might be the rushiest day ever happened in my life. Imagine I had to rush to Kuala Lumpur Convention Center in just merely 1 & 1/2 hour from Kepong!

So this is what happened on that day. Right after the school bell rang, I rushed to KLCC asap by public transport and managed to reached there within 2 hours time. Well, the convention center is a lil' bit empty except for contractors walking all around and coordinator busy assigning positions and receiving calls. Once I received my order from my supervisor itself, I went to Banquet Hall to help out the peeps from Edifier. This RM70 is not easy to earn seriously. Imagine a closed space without any ventilation, and you had to move the stocks and unload all the boxes, its like going for a sauna bath for 2 hours straight. But everything is rewarding when you see everything is done and the booth is smart enough for the customers to visit. After knowing each of my colleagues, I was assigned to audio-technica/SteelSeries booth located in Hall 5. Well, there's always a chance to promote other brand right? especially when SteelSeries and audio-technica is more well known for its quality and pricetag.

Day #2 - Baby Steps

Its the day, a moment I had been waiting for the last 2 weeks. Finally PC Fair started and I am pumped up to work on full force! As shown on the right is my booth I am working for the coming 3 days. Well, since I am not familiar with the product itself, I spent almost 30 minutes to understand the pros and cons of products in different price range.

Audiophile stuffs are pretty subjective in my opinion, since different individuals have different preference. So you wouldn't see me spamming my customers with all those technical stuffs. Instead of doing so, I will let them experience the headphone themself, and later ask for their preference and answer all their thoughts about the products. But then, one of audio-technica greatest rival, Senheisser, is just a few steps away. And I had a hard time trying to answer all my customers needs.

On 1st Day of PC Fair, generally you can't sell much items since most of the visitors have the impression that there will be a chop down sales on the last day. But still I managed to score a few sales on that day itself, since I kept on emphasizing that we're going to offer the same price and the same deal all the time during the fair. And thanks to some of my colleagues for backuping me when I am going to close a sales. Wayne, Ying, Wei, Fish, Billy [damn you're hilarious!] and some dudes from SteelSeries. kudos to all of you.

Long way back home.

Day #2 - Getting good.

I arrived KLCC earlier than expected to take a glimpse of the crowd before PC fair started. Like any other <strike>Broadband</strike> PC Fair, the battalion kept on shouting like a moron. They are fricking annoying, irritating, and some of them deserves a punch in their bloody head for their stupidity. Come on? Downloading a BRAY format video within 1 minute with HSBB? Go to hell please.

On the second day itself, my body is still aching since I was really exhausted on the 1st day. The customers on that day is significantly more than Day 1 since its weekend. Met a few /k/tards and of course the infamous muka mintak penumbuk tok kok sing song king - J.O.H.N.K.O.R......seriously wtf-ed moments. Aside from them, some of my classmates came over to my booth and had a few minutes chat. Thanks girls! the few minutes chat actually gives me some sort of encouragement to continue working. It feels good to see someone familiar. But there's an unpleasant news happened on that day. A SteelSeries Siberia V2 Headphone was stolen by some Malay dude when the booth is extremely crowded by visitors. (There is a CS 1.6 friendly match between visitors and professional gamers from FMJ [Full Metal Jacket], which is one of the Malaysia representative for WCG. That's why we got distracted.)

While working, some of the dudes ran over to Seagate booth right opposite AT booth since all of the promoters are hot. Some managed to score their facebook contacts. And I managed to get a few too. *grins*

PS : Wengyi, you still owe me a lunch.

Day #4 - Final Countdown

Mentally weakened is the only way to describe me on Sunday. Countless pimples popping off my face since I didn't really take care of my personal hygiene for the last 3 days. But still, ahoy last day of PC Fair here I come! 3rd day of PC Fair, the number of visitors significantly increased. The sales figure are increasing since some of all of us sold a few sets at a same time. And they called me the earplug killer, since I sold quite a number of earplugs in my booth. Sometimes I felt that promoting a product really depends on your luck. Some customers tends to waste your time by giving their so-called "customer-rights-philosophy" and tried countless numbers of products and patting their ass off without buying anything. Not even a sincere compliment to us for providing him with product knowledge. Simply a waste of time.

Just because I met 2 of these dumbasses, it made me lost a huge number of potential customers. So guys, if you were a customers, make sure to emphasize you're not buying anything before they provide you their services. You may ask, but don't hog our precious time. We also need to cari makan leh ah siang!

One more thing in particular, I found out another unhealthy phenomenon in PC Fairs lately. I am okay with press/professional/semi amateurs photographers snapping photos of booth babes. But some particular group of males seems to abuse this kind of privilege of snapping booth babes. Not only requested themselves to have a up-close pictures with them (although the show girls dislikes them), but also requested their personal info too. There's a case last year where show girls got harassed by bunch on anonymous stalker from the internet asking for their personal details. Come on la guys. Even you can't get the chance to score a girl, at least respect them la.

Photo Gallery

Packing Up!

We kinda lost an AC cable. So we had to dig out everything to look for it.

The guy with the spec, our boss.

Cleaning up.

The End.

End Note :

Thanks for your patience in reading this blog. I wrote this entry for the last few days. So bear with me if I forgotten anything. And somehow I regretted for working for audio-technica, because I was poisoned by their products too. SJ3 you're too incredible.

Anyway, 5800 XpressMusic here I come!

April Fool full of lulz.
Surprisingly, my class wan not too fond about the April fool thingy, just some couple of really unconvincing pranks from my friends. But what you expect from bookworms anyway.

Back to topic, this year in the internuts April fool is full of lulz.

On today too, nVidia lifted their NDA for their latest DX11 flagship GPU (codenamed Fermi), dubbed as GTX470 and GTX480, they sure packed hell lots of raw power. Perform best on GPGPU and tessellation rendering, this is a montrous card. But talking about some other factor too, you must remember that Fermi is released 6 months after ATI Evergreen DX11 flagship. So Nvidia engineering team should have a lot of time to develop their GPU to able to outperform Evergreen by a noticeable performance margin.

But what turned out from the major review sites is a huge pile of disappointment. The whole card is underwhelming. Its seems like a half-done product rather than a perfect piece of gem. There are flaws here and there although the GPU itself is a beast. With a TDP rating of 250W (Initially 275W, they disabled some cores to lower its TDP), GTX480 holds the new title of single-GPU powersucker. Not to mention its heat generated by the GPU itself. During full load, its temperature can reach a temperature of 97°C (90°C on 2-monitor 3D surround vision setup - idle). Impressive isn't it? Another let-down factor is the price too. Priced at RM2199 and RM1599 respectively, GTX480 and GTX470 are seriously overpriced for its performance offered. Some might think, the more expensive the product is, the better it perform. But if you're a smart consumer, you should know you shouldn't pay for an extra RM700 for 10fps over HD5870.

There's much to do for nVidia engineering team for perfecting the GT100 chip in order to perform to the best. I do hope that nVidia can really make a threat out of HD5870 since healthy competition is beneficial to customers. Till ATi's 6xxx series came out, DX11 wars still have a long way to go.

Still not convinced? Try looking at these reviews.

Its been years ago since I heard the hoo-haa thingy of Earth Hour. It might seems fresh and exciting judging you can do alot of (okay, you-know-what) stuffs in the dark. The possibilities are simply endless. Dont ask me what I did on last year's Earth Hour btw.

So it was a success last year, and now WWF did it again this year, with more participants and supporters continued to roar on Earth Hour. But at the same time, many factors had influenced me not to believe in that anymore. You called that a awareness campaign? Dubbed with "OH HUMANS SAVE OUR HOLY MOTHER EARTH!" slogan, seriously WWF, you disappoint me once again. You might show how human activities destroys the earth through the promotion video, but the impact to the others are simply too shallow. So called turning off lights on famous landmarks are cool? blah, give me a break.

Seriously, no one actually give a damn about it. Some just joined in for the lulz. Ironically, on Earth hour itself, I saw almost 70+ friends online in Facebook and over 100+ still online in my local timezone (GMT +8). And on that hour itself I purposely turned on my speaker to 100% volume and blasting all the songs I could as a sign of protest. And in addition, I joined this group in facebook too. Guess what, some of my so called-environmentalist friend of mine got butthurt and flamed me. but...This is the way its meant to be trolled™

Dont get me wrong, I love earth like anyone of you. And because of global warming, the temperature on daytime is getting on my nerves. I will support any acts of saving the environment, but not this overatted piece of public stunt. Peace.

One hell bloody accident.

So this is what happened today. A full continuation of the story after a sneak peek in my Facebook status.

Just like any other Wednesday, it was supposed to be a joyful ride to my tuition center itself with my trustworthy Wira. But on that particular moment when I am waiting for the green light, the most unpredictable thing in my life just started to happen. The time is 7.44pm, and a loud bang just to be heard from the back of my car.

Stunned and shocked, I turned off my engine and walked off from my car as calm as possible. What happened next, is unforgettable, the motorcyclist just stoned on the road while blood flowing out from his head and nose like a water tap. Without hesitation, I called 999 and reported every info I can offer. While on that time, more and more bystander started to offer some help (some are busybodies, trying to look for a loot.), But from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for all the help offered. Some offered their numbers if I need a witness, and some even offered me to send the motorist to nearby clinic. But since the motorcyclist sustained a serious injury on his head, I would rather wait for the ambulance.

Judging from the traffic status, it seems that the ambulance won't be arriving any moment, so they suggested me to send him to a nearby hospital. While they're trying their very best to stuff him inside my car, I noticed something else. The broken pieces from the motorcycle punctured my back tyres. Without an option, the only way is to change the tire. With 4 men including my dad hustled off the tires, we just rushed off to the hospital ASAP.

Well, I was expecting my parents, especially my dad to nag at me for causing such accident to happened. (Parenting #101 - Parents tends to blame their children even thought they are not guilty). But surprisingly I didn't get any kind of nagging, instead of it, they asked me to calm down and get myself relaxed. On the way, we realized something else, the motorcyclist are actually drunk. So that explains everything.

So basically after sending him to the emergency ward, settled everything with his family members, exchanged phone numbers, we drove all the way back to ground zero take snap down all the evidence. Some moment later? Here I am, blogging this post.

Still some stuffs to be settled by tomorrow morning since the pity motorist are still unconscious. Haiz.

End note

Mr. Wen, take care and don't make your wife worried.
The second title of the Mass Effect trilogy, the developers managed to combine both RPG & FPS with a twist of sci-fi novel, creating a deep story yet thrilling gameplay that guaranteed to thrill gamers all around the world. As you going across the Milky Way, you'll had the chance to interact with various NPC's, gather codex pages, and much much more. And its way better than its predecessor in alot of ways which I will mentioned it later.

WARNING : Minor Spoiler AHEAD!

2 years after the fall of Sovereign, you'll start the game as Commander Shepard in Normandy SR1. Once you're in the game, you will notice a huge graphical improvements in Mass Effect 2, more details, in depth lightning and smoother facial expressions as well. And what happened next is all about your decision. So I will leave it to you.

One distinct features found in the game is that you can import your character from ME1 to ME2. By doing so, all your decisions and plotline from ME1 will determine your storyline on ME2. But much did it affects ME2? Well, Lead Cinematic Director Armando Troisi explained that there are more than 700 plot hooks from ME1 will be carried on to the next game. The other way round, if you're new to Mass Effect series, probably you will have quite a little understanding about the previous storyline and some decision will be automatically chosen by the game itself. So if you have a backup of your save file, I suggest that you should import it. (RIGHT : The import screen of ME2)

Hacking is now NSFE (Not save for eyesight)

☓ - ME1

✔- ME2
So how about the game mechanics itself? It does improved a lot, I say. Unlike ME1, where you are required to land on planets and scan some stuffs and long elevator rides (When I say its long, the ride actually lasted for 1 minute+), which gets really boring after some times. And things get different in Mass Effect 2. There are more side missions and solo missions which differs from each other, and I guaranteed that those missions will move on to ME3 as well. Besides that, talking to your crewmates and squads can sometimes bring some surprises too, apart from unlocking codex pages, some offers some upgrades and weapons that will later on affect your ending. And don't forget the often-argued Romance option. After the much acclaimed NSFC issues, those scenes was actually cut short by Bioware themselves. So dont expect that you can fap while Shepard (SHEpard as well) is banging some alien chicks/dude.

Apart from the previous game, you can no longer loot money and equipments in ME2. Instead, you'll have to either buy, hack, salvage tech upgrades and credits from some specific spots in game. And equipments can be now customized at major starships and Normandy, giving an option to players to look stylish yet obtain some bonuses from the armor itself. As for the weaponry, grenades are no longer in game but it is replaced by Heavy weapons. Although it packed some kick, I don't really suggest heavy weapons as their ammos are limited and sometimes rifles and biotics are enough to handle off large crowds. If you feel that you're on disadvantage in either shields and weapons, you can always upgrade it at the research bay in Tech Labs. Sometimes members of the squad will request for some upgrades on them, and upgrading them makes them even tougher in battles. When a certain period is reached, they will start off their loyalty quest and completing them gives them a powerful skill and increase their chances of survival in the ending mission. If you wanted all of your squad to survive and move on to ME3, finish all the loyalty quests.

Now Tricia Helfer just made EDI sounds even sexier.

Talking about casting, I personally felt that Bioware did a great job in that. Taking some of the memorable characters such as EDI, Illusive Man, Miranda, and Shepard himself too. All of them are casted by various actors from Sci-Fi series such as Star Trek. With an all-star casting, ME2 deserves to get some really good applause for it. To learn more about the casting behind them, tune in HERE.

Presentation wise, ME2 is so much better than some A+ grade movies out there. Forgot about Transformers that full of overatted explosions. Nothing in that beats ME2 in terms of storyline. Once in awhile you came across with cinematic scenes during some intense scenes and sometimes you can execute a quicktime bold/heroic move (depends on scene) that will significantly boost up your Paragon/Renegade values. A high value in either one of them can help in your storyline so don't be afraid to make a move. The dialogue cycle is still preserved in the game and each actions/dialogue will trigger a player-driven cutscenes. One worthy note on, every single squad members in ME2 have their own unique behavior that made every single of them worth memorable. Even NPCs like Dr. Chakwas, she might not belongs to your squad, but sometimes a minor character can brings a huge impact to the player too. The BGM as well are engaging and suits the situation too. For this I give credits for the composers as they really steals the shows.

As for the visual and graphical parts, ME2 is still using a modified Unreal Engine 3 to run this game. But the details of the Milky Way is much more detailed compared to ME1 universe. Look at the screenshot on the right. The texture is so much more detailed and the scenery is stunning as well. And surprisingly, this game runs great with really high FPS on my 3 years old rig. Perhaps some modification on game engine makes this even smoother than ME1.

Some caption and screenshots as well

Commander Sheperd

Final Words.

Games like Mass Effect 2 doesn't come across that often. With its stunning presentation and engaging gameplay, nothing in its same genre came close to it. Although there are some bugs here and there but its pro overcomes everything. Furthermore there are some free DLCs available to those who had access to Cerberus Networks which really worth it (Upcoming Firewalker Pack is a P2P DLC). If you're a fan of FPS and Sci-fi dramas, you shouldn't miss this. 9/10

Microsoft Office 2010 BETA - First Glance.

Well, you can get rewarded by testing it too as Microsoft Malaysia are offering a sleek-yet-powerful HTC HD2 monthly and much more. 2 versions are available for BETA testers, Office Home and Business and Office Professional depending on your work preference. And Office Visio 2010 and Project 2010 are there for optional download.

Details Right HERE.

And later this post I will review some bits on what's new on Office 2010.

Surprisingly yet stunning, this is my first reaction when I installed the vanilla version of it.

The new splash screen, unlike its predecessor, displays all running information and add-ons to give user a brief idea what is being loaded. I registered my Windows Live ID in exchange on one BETA license key for it. So basically Windows will send an installer file with your unique BETA key attached. Once you done that, just start the Click-to-run installer and let it run until everything is done.

So let's compare Office 07 UI with Office 2010 UI side by side. The ribbon interface is still there, so to those who are still not used to the ribbon toolbar, its time to start now. On first glance, the interface looks much cleaner and your color scheme are affected by your Windows Vista/7 theme selection. There's not much changes for the UI itself since the developers wanted to avoid confusion among users. As you can see, the biggest change made is replacement of the Office Orb with a new UI which I will explain it later.

No more hassle to manage your files with the new taskbar. There's much to customize your files and manage it with detailed explanation and make your life easier. You can setup file permission, compatibility mode, and even post your documents on Skydrive or post it in your blog. A worthy note : Now your documents can save as .PDF/XML format without an add-on from Microsoft.

From what’s being said by Microsoft Office team, while talking about Office Web, it was stated that Office 14 will have a lot of focus on collaboration for users while working on documents. A demo of OneNote was shown where changes made on the rich version were synced across with the Web version of OneNote. Office Web will be cross-browser and cross-platform. In another demo featuring Word, it was said that users can simultaneously author a document, they will not be over-writing paragraphs and they can communicate with each other from within Word. This was in the desktop version of Word in Office 14.

Besides all those goodies, it also have a built-in screencapture tool (something like snipping tool in Vista/7, just that it is integrated in MS Office), an online presentation broadcaster (refer screencap on the right), and lastly, something else caught my attention. Microsoft Word latest picture editor actually surprised me when it could do some really interesting effects just like Photoshop.

Overall, I found out that the new Office 2010 is not only graphically appealing, but packed with functionality and security as well. Just pray that the final product would not disappoint us judging from the BETA version of it. 8/10.

PS : When running Click-to-run installation, you might face some lagness regardless how good your PC are. I suggest you guys to download its full version rather than save some bandwidth by using Click-to-run.

Our mysterious Biology lab.

There are some factors that made SMKB's biology lab unique. Some of the are caused by technical problem but yet a few mysterious case remains. You might wonder, another angry wraith in SMKB again? Chill down, don't worry. Our lab is ghost-free so don't expect any paranormal photos to show up in this post. But still I would like to share this with you guys.

Starting from the mysterious projector screen.
Unlike any other projector screen you seen on anywhere else. This particular dead object seems to posses some kind of consciousness. Still, at least it didn't showed up some scary faces.

You might ask, why I'd say its unique? Well, sometimes we're trying to roll it off to use the whiteboard behind it, but it doesn't seems to "obey" our action no matter how hard we tried. With our so-called "top-brains", The possibilities to shut it off seems to be slim, even the smartest dude scratched his head off looking for a way to shut this stuff off. The solution for it? It seems like only the lab assistant Pn Margret was able to do so. With a soft touch and some gestures, it just went up, magically. and leave with a loud applause and cheering behind her. (She seems to enjoy this.)

But the mystery of this screen is broken by one of our classmate, who claimed to be one of Dumbeldore's lineage. After a few times of trying, she finally managed to do it too, but somehow I pity that screen as the friend of mine just screamed and ran off after she succeeded. leaving a big bang that almost wrecked the holder.

Sadly enough. Just like siblings, the projector brings truckload of problem too. Although it works fine once in a while, sometimes it just runs standby mode without a single notice. It just-...shut off itself following with a high RPM fan spinning. Initially we thought that the system autoset it to sleep in every a few period, but my hypothesis goes wrong apparently.

When I am doing some checkup on the settings itself, the SLEEP mode is turned off. So who's the one responsible behind this? We dont know. But judging from the countless number of dust accumulated on the projector itself, maybe that machine powered down itself to prevent overheating. Or not? Nevertheless, it has its own temper and often cut off our Biology teacher's boring lecture, which is a good opportunity to recharge some energy.

Well. there are still a few mysteries but yet to resolve until I found some proof to reveal it. Someday later guys!

PS : Photo will be attached later.

The neverending source of heat.

How am I supposed to describe the Malaysian weather nowadays? Its so freaking random lately.

5 minutes ago the sun still burning your skin with scorching flame of it, but moment later the sky was assembled by dark clouds and there goes the thunder and raindrops symphony. A good news, I heard you said?

NOT A CHANCE.

Because the rain doesn't last long. I mean, barely 8 minutes time. And then the sun continued to burn our skins. especially the girls. Their worst nightmare, since they have to spent more bucks on moisturizers and masks. But what I pissed off the most is the humidity itself. The raindrop on the surrounding will then evaporates faster due to the hot weather and causing the ambient temperature even higher, not to mention the humidity also caused my cheapo ATX casing to oxidize. Darn it.

Guess what, I actually use the following method to cut down the heat.

Add tons of ice in my sky juice.

Spray water all around me with a sprayer.

Not wearing anything on top. [Naked is a VERY negative word to use.]

Turn on the water pipe on my roof to spread off all the heat on top.

But nothing beats a can of Shandy/Beer because they are simply too awesome to describe. Try one, it works.

Life is all about balance.

What a cloudy day to kickstart a morning.

While everyone are expecting today's assembly to be boring like any other days, I was expecting something else. Well, it starts off with a speech of a friend of mine. Rather than a reading along session, that particular friend of mine insisted to speak on an impromptu speech with his own selected topics. Frankly, of all the years studying in KB, he is the 1st dude who really impressed me with his way of giving a speech. Although its informal and full of self centered opinions (so called syok sendiri), his enthusiasm and self confidence shocked everyone in the assembly ground.

Seems like majority of the KBians liked it. Teachers are discussing about it, students were laughing hard because of the jokes, and, some unpleasant looking from the minority of the cavemens. (My friend was talking something about Life). Apparently the minorities aren't pleased of it, since its a 18yo boy talking about life experience when he doesn't fully experienced compared to the older ones. But I do agree one point my friend mentioned on stage.

Life is all about Balance

In order to achieve success, one must undergo lots of endurance and challenges. The road is tough but it is rewarding. Its all about balance in life. Without hardship, you wouldn't appreciate the reward behind it.

And with coincidence, Pn Wong also shared a story about life with us during our Chemistry period. Entitled "The Marble Lady", its about a conversation between a marble tile and a marble statue in a museum. (I copied the whole story from the internet)

There was this museum laid with beautiful marble tiles with a huge marble lady statue displayed in the middle of the lobby. Many people came from all over the world just to admire this beautiful marble lady statue. One night, the marble tiles started talking to the Marble lady.

Marble tile: Marble lady, it’s just not fair, it’s just not fair! Why does everybody from all over the world come all the way here just to step on me while admiring you? Not fair!

Marble lady: My dear friend, marble tile, Do you still remember that we were actually from the same cave?

Marble tile: Yeah! That’s why I feel it is even more unfair. We were born from the same cave and yet we receive different treatment now. Not fair!

Marble lady: Then, do you still remember the day when the designer tried to work on you, but you resisted his tool?

Marble tile: Yes, of course I remember. I hate that guy! How could he use his tool on me, it hurt so badly.

Marble lady: That’s right! He couldn’t work on you at all as you resisted being worked on.

Marble tile: So???

Marble lady: When he decided to give up on you and start working on me instead, I knew at once that I would be something different after his efforts. I did not resist his tool, instead I bore all the painful tools he used on me.

Marble tile: Mmmmmmmmm…………

Marble Lady: My friend, there is a price to everything in life. Since you decided to give up half way, you can’t blame anybody who steps on you now.

The moral of the story? The more hard knocks you go through in life, the more you’ll learn and put them to use in the future.

Sometimes speeches and stories like that can really inspire someone to strive. How I wished one day I could speak an impromptu speech based on my point of view like what my friend did this morning. Perhaps some self confidence and encouragement is needed, since i lacked both of them.

Well, tomorrow there will be another speech from my classmates. Lets hope he will do well by then.

Rants of a blogger #2

Well well well....Here comes part 2. (Part #1 refer here. )

Sometimes I received some stupid fan club invitations in facebook from some anonymous bloggers to join their cult. Since I am not a frequent viewer of the blog (and his blog content is not that interesting anyway), I usually click on decline button and continue with my job. But minutes later, the same guy invited me again! And this goes on and on until I gone FUUUU and deleted that dude off my friend list. You thought the story ends here? Nah, some of them even <strike>advertise</strike> spammed in my blog too. (without even asking permission nor paying any form of money). Seriously guys, if you really desperate for attention, earn yourselves one instead of begging for that! With good content/interesting stuffs, its not hard to make your blog well known. Perhaps on that moment someone else will open up a fan club specially just for you? That will be much more satisfying instead of you yourself opening one.

Advertisements. If you're planning to earn some extra bucks through blogging, there are tons of ways to do so. Google Adsense, Nuffnagg, direct advertising etc etc. Every single one of them generates money. Even I do advertise in this space you're looking at now. Of course, I welcome you to click on it although nuffnagg are stingy with the revenues per-click thingy..... But in certain blog I randomly stumbled upon, the whole blog is so packed even the blog template is relocated to somewhere else. And the worst part is, they installed certain script in their blog to redirect their site to some random pishing site. FINE. *ctrl-alt-delete*. End of story.

Moral of the story : You force it too much, you're pretty much digging your own grave.

Part 3 will be released few days later. Stay tuned.
