On most desktop web browsers, it is possible to access a list of all the websites you previously visited in a tab by holding down on the back button. By default, this feature isn’t available in Mobile Safari, which offers the option of going through the browser’s history or pressing “back” several times. BackForWardList iOS 5 makes the native lists used to power the default back and forward buttons accessible, allowing the user to quickly access previous pages, and quickly return later on.

All you need to do is hold down either the back and forward buttons, and then select the page you want from the list. BackForwardList iOS 5 includes a feature where items can be quickly deleted from the lists that populated by the back and forward buttons by swiping over them (similar to OneByOne Safari). Keep in mind that deleting the list would only have the same effect as closing a tab; that items deleted from the back and forward lists operate on a separate continuity from your browser’s global history. This means they won’t disappear from your browser’s history or saved search, though you can use OneByOne Safari to quickly nab those too.

You can download BackForwardList iOS 5 for free on Cydia through the BigBoss repository. Depending on whether you make frequent use of the back and forward buttons, you may find that BackForwardList iOS 5 is an essential tweak for tricking out Safari on your iPhone or iPad.

Yesterday there was a leak of parts that revealed the design of the upcoming iPhone, if genuine. MacRumors (via iLab Factory) came across a CAD drawing of a similar device from the front, apparently owned by Apple Inc. The drawing, if legitimate, confirms the taller aspect ratio, the compact dock connector, as well as the centered FaceTime camera resting above the front speaker.

All the text on the CAD drawing is in English, with metric measurements (in micrometers). The text labels things like the measurements of the “active area mask height,” “the mask edge to edge of plastic,” “edge of mask to closest edge of metal.” It reminds me all to well of my highschool AutoCAD classes.

What I’m wondering is: why now? Why leak a CAD drawing after a leak of physical components? And, while we’re at it, where’s the rest of the drawing? All that’s been posted is a front view, while drawings of this kind are usually orthographic; made up of flat pictures from all the object’s sides.

Although anyone with AutoCAD could fake this picture, it would be difficult to do so this soon after the leaked back case and front plate. Despite the blurry text caused by the low resolution of the photograph, the actual CAD drawing is full of detail.

Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch has a lot of the same features that can be found in a fully-fledged desktop computer, but when you run into something that can’t be done on the iPhone, it’s more than an annoyance. It’s a reminder that you still need a “real machine.” One of these annoyances is the default inability to download various files off Mobile Safari. A new tweak called Safari Download Enabler will make your iPad feel more like a “real” computer.

Keep in mind that Safari Download Enabler isn’t the most intuitive piece of software in Cydia. If you’re expecting to download files with a single button press, Safari Download Enabler will throw you off. To download a file with the tweak installed:

1. Hold down a link to the file
2. Select the option to Download Linked File
3. In the new page, choose the option to open the file in iFile.
Keep in mind that  Safari Download Enabler requires iFile installed to actually save the file, or else it will only open as a web page. Files are saved in the /var/mobile/Documents directory.

Aside from that quirk, another disadvantage to Safari Download Enabler is it replaces the “Add To Reading List” link option. If you actually use the Add To Reading List feature, that may be a reason to stay away from this tweak.

There used to be another option for downloading from Mobile Safari, the Safari Download Manager Cydia tweak, which made downloading files a one button affair, did not require additional software like iFile, and included a “Download To…” button, so the file could be immediately pushed to wherever it’s needed.

On the plus side, Safari Download Enabler is absolutely FREE while Safari Download Manager costs $5.00 and only works with iOS 4. If, for whatever reason, you are still running iOS 4, Safari Download Manager is the superior tweak and is well worth the $5. For those of you living in post-iOS 5 land, Safari Download Enabler is perfectly functional, if a little quirky. You can find Safari Download Enabler from the BigBoss repository on Cydia.

Tying in to rumors of an Apple HDTV set, BGR reports that Apple will be demoing a new version of the Apple TV OS at WWDC, according to “a trusted source.” Apparently this version of the Apple TV OS will be more “feature-complete” and will power the rumored Apple HDTV. BGR also claims that Apple is trying to get a control out API to manufacturers, which would allow the Apple TV remote to control any connected component.

There are a few details that don’t mesh with this rumor. First off, Apple’s TV stock remote is limited to a click wheel, a select button, a play/pause button, and a menu button. Using the stock remote to run the whole show would be messy. Especially for juggling between an Apple TV set top box, a TV, a Blu-Ray Player, various consoles, and an elaborate AV set up. Unless this is going to be an exclusive feature of a standalone TV set, I can’t imagine it working.

The rumor might be a little more feasible if it involved an updated version of Apple’s Remote app running the show, although some customers might be put off on the idea of keeping a dedicated iPad or iPod Touch by their TVs.

Another issue is the problem of other manufacturers. Apple is already offering a competing service to cable set top boxes and, if certain rumors turn out to be true, a competing television set. Why on earth would a competing manufacturer support an API which would make the Apple TV the central hub of the living room?

Do you find that the notification banners block out too much of your screen? The prolific tweak developer, Ron Melkhior, has released a new tweak called SmallBanners, which shrinks the size of the Notification Center’s pop-up banners to the area of the iPhone’s regular status bar. This way you can read your iPhone’s notification, and if it’s not important you can ignore it with little interruption.

The bar does exactly what the notification banner normally does, just shrunk down into half-sized tabs. It even displays a smaller version of the notifying app’s icon along with the app’s message. I tested SmallBanners with a widescreen game, and the small notification appeared as expected.

SmallBanners is available in Cydia through the BigBoss repository. Since SmallBanners is a notifications tweak, it requires iOS 5 and up. As with many of Ron Melkhior’s tweaks, SmallBanners is completely free. Just keep in mind that the tweak does not currently support the iPad.

The app does not leave an icon on the SpringBoard or any settings to configure. Just install the app from Cydia, restart the SpringBoard, and banners will be modified to the smaller format. If you prefer the way the notification banners were sized before, just uninstall the app.

First it was Absinthe and now it’s Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether Cydia package. Earlier today, we reported that the Chronic Dev Team had released a new version of Absinthe to untethered jailbreak the iPad 2,4. This iPad 2 WiFi was released earlier this year with a 32nm processor that reduced power consumption. Now, the team has also updated the Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether Cydia package to jailbreak the new iPad 2 untethered.

Rocky Racoon is a Cydia package that can untether your iOS 5.1.1 tethered jailbreak. The latest version, 1.0-3, will also be able to perform the magic on the iPad 2 Wi-Fi (2,4). Those of you who are currently tethered on iOS 5.1.1 can install this package from Cydia and will have an untethered jailbreak, even on your iPad 2,4.

Apple released a new iPad 2 WiFi, a unique piece of hardware that was difficult to find, now support in 1.0-3.

Nothing more to do here, just install, wait for it to reboot and you should have an untethered jailbreak. Remember, only if you’re tethered jailbroken on iOS 5.1.1 should you use this, otherwise you can use Absinthe 2.0.4 to get the job done!

Ever wondered how those iPods, MacBooks and other Apple products manage to look good after years of use, how that shine and toughness is still intact? Well, turns out, Apple uses a thin layer of rust over the aluminum to get that brushed finish and amazing toughness. Rust? Really?

The process is known as Anodizing aluminum, which involves growing a thin layer of rust on the aluminium to make it less susceptible to damage and corrosion over time. It’s done on almost all of the Apple products. And that paint that you see, it’s not painted on it, it just appears as a part of this process. The dye seeps into the holes and becomes a part of the aluminium, it’s not the paint that gives the color. You’ll know more when you watch this video created by the EngineerGuy:

Now you know how and why your Apple products looks so great and feel so tough, it’s all thanks to that layer of rust. Pretty creative I must say, and it’s not just Apple that uses this technique, but it does use it in a profound manner.

Having a continuous conversation with Siri can be troublesome, as you’d have to tap on the listen button to make it listen after she finishes talking. You may have noticed this a lot, that as soon as Siri answers a question, she stops listening. This happens a lot, but not all the time. Wouldn’t it be better if Siri would continue listening to you after finishing talking?

PersistentAssistant is a new Cydia tweak that does just that. Installing the tweak enables Siri to continue listening to you even after she’s done replying to your questions. That way, you can always continue to talk to Siri without having to tap on the listen button. You can have a complete conversation when you’re bored and have nothing to do. There’s nothing more to this tweak. Options can be configured from the Settings app. If, you’ve annoyed yourself because of this, then you definitely need this tweak.

PersistentAssistant is currently available in the BigBoss repo for free. Try it out and tell us if you were able to have a meaningful conversation (highly doubtful) with Siri.

At the D10 Conference, apart from explaining why the new iPad was named so and what the S in iPhone 4S stood for, Tim Cook also spoke about what’s going to happen with Siri. The personal assistant is still in its beta years and not as amazing as we all expected it to be. Sure, it can do plenty of things and some more with those jailbreak tweaks, but what’s really going on at the Apple HQ. Tim Cook says they are doubling down on it!

Tim Cook had some really good things to say about Siri and its future path, what it could be like in the future. From his talks, it looked like the next version of Siri will be much improved and have more abilities. Even though it can’t do much right now, people do use the personal assistant for basic tasks and they do enjoy it. It’s one of main reasons why the iPhone 4S did so well, apart from that amazing camera of course. Here’s what he had to say during the interview:

Siri is one of the most popular features of iPhone 4S. But there’s more that it can do, and we have a lot of people working on this. And I think you will be really pleased with some of the things you’re going to see over the coming months. We have some cool ideas about what Siri can do. We have a lot going on on this. … Sure, it can be broader, and so forth, but we see unbelievable potential here. We’re doubling down on it.

Thus, we can expect a much improved Siri to be available to us in the next generation iPhone, one that can do much more than set alarms and reminders. The future is bright, and since people really enjoy AI on their mobile devices, Siri will do well no matter.

Yesterday, we told you that Tim Cook was going to speak at the D10 Conference and be interviewed by Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher. During the interview, he was asked a lot of questions such as how things are at Apple with him around, what he thought of Steve Jobs and many more. One of those questions also involved was why the new iPad wasn’t given a number.

Tim Cook revealed that it’s not necessary to follow the same pattern in naming products that people love. For example, the latest iMacs and Macbook Airs don’t have numbers next to them, that would be unnecessary. Same was the case with the new iPad and this could mean that the next iPhone may also follow the same pattern. He also revealed that with the iPhone, the S in 3GS stood for Speed whereas the S in iPhone 4S stands more for Siri. He mentioned that Siri is one of the strongest factors for the sales of the iPhone 4S. The company names its products according to a new important feature or changes in design.

If you look back at iPod, we had an iPod and we changed it a few times and we kept calling it iPod. When we announced a new one and we called it iPod Mini. When we changed it massively we called it Nano. Of course, the company has done things differently with the iPhone. You can do it either way, is the real story. You can stick with the name and people generally love that, or you can put a number at the end which denotes the generation or whatever. The new iPad was not a shocking new way of naming from an Apple point of view. It goes back to what we’ve actually done the most. So it probably was talked about in a way that seemed more like a shocking change than it really was. The iPhone, for example, went from 3G to 3GS, with the letter “S” connoting speed. In 4 to 4S, the “S” stood more for Siri.

Rumors currently say that the next gen iPhone will have a larger screen and may incorporate design changes, thus it’s possible that it could be named after that. It could be called the new iPhone, but it could also be the iPhone 5. What do you think sounds and suits better?

Planetbeing recently promised that the Chronic Dev Team is rigorously working on iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2,4. This particular iPad was released earlier this year with a smaller 32nm processor that reduces power consumption, hence providing users with longer battery life. This was done to save costs since Apple decided to sell the iPad 2 at lower prices after the launch of the new iPad. Those who owned the newer iPad 2 (2,4) weren’t able to untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.1.1 as it wasn’t supported. That’s old news now.

Chronic Dev Team have finally released Absinthe 2.0.4 with support for the latest iPad 2,4. Anyone with the iPad 2,4 can now untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.1.1 using the latest Absinthe. If you haven’t updated yet, you should probably do it now and take advantage of the new jailbreak.

ZodTTD reported on Twitter that gpSPhone and psx4all have been approved to be compatible with iOS 5.1.1 and will be available on Cydia shortly. psx4all, however, has not been updated to remove screen tearing, a minor graphical glitch that occurs when frames are drawn out of sync, and is easiest to spot when the camera pans across large objects.

Now it's only a matter of time before the update for 5.1.1

Another recent reply from ZodTTD revealed that a dedicated iPad interface is coming to ZodTTD’s emulators by way of Drunknbass, who is also working on the interface for N64iphone. So you can look forward to a more ideal screen configuration (or you can use a Wii controller).

ZodTTD’s emulators are available in the ZodTTD & MacCiti repo as well as the Cydia Store and will be shortly compatible with iOS 5.1.1.

The Wall Street Journal’s D: All Things Digital conference is an unscripted event where top figures in media and technology have conversations on various topics. This year the All Things Digital conference will feature Tim Cook, Apple’s current CEO. The conference will also feature speakers of interest including Aaron Sorkin (screen writer behind The Social Network and the upcoming adaptation of Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs biography), Mark Pincus (Zynga founder), Daniel Ek (Spotify CEO) and many more.

The conference is a business casual event located in the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. For those of us who haven’t snagged tickets to the event, it will be available for livestreem, starting tomorrow with Mary Meeker at 8:15 AM PT, followed by Aaron Sorkin at 11:05 AM, and Larry Ellison at 3:55 PM.

At previous All Things Digital conferences, Steve Jobs spoke about the conflict between Apple and Adobe concerning Flash, Adob’s CEO spoke about flash on mobile devices, and.. Microsoft demoed Windows 8. All Things Digital is a slightly wackier conference, and we might hear candid remarks about the direction Apple is going in.

Between BGR’s mockup of the Maps app on iOS 6 and the recently released WWDC app, it seems that Apple has begun favoring a silver-gray variant of its theme over the current palette of blue, grey, black, and white. While this may be a hint of Apple’s future design trend, it’s possible that what BGR’s source saw wasn’t the final version of the Maps interface, and that the WWDC schedule app is only for the event.

BGR’s mockup of the Maps app admittedly doesn’t reveal much. It was released alongside blurry photographs, apparently of the maps app running on a real device. The mockup features a gray search bar with a gray location button, and a gray page turned up for the settings.

I’m hoping that Apple doesn’t switch to a gray interface as on the iPad, just because that could get boring on the iPhone’s limited screen real estate. The blue in the previous versions of iOS looked distinct from the status bar and the white panels. If it’s only gray, it won’t be much to look at.

This drab metallic reskin of the user interface could have something to do with an upcoming revision in the iPhone’s hardware, such as the aluminium iPhone backs revealed today by iFixyouri.

You might have heard rumors that Apple would be releasing an updated MacBook Pro with a super high resolution Retina display (though what that would mean on the MacBook Pro is anybody’s guess). The rumors also claim that the next MacBook pro will be thinner and will feature the option of a 2.7GHz Ivy Bridge quad-core processor alongside 8 GB of RAM. But what will this thinner MacBook Pro look like? Designer Guilherme Schasiepen posted his interpretation of Apple’s next addition to its professional laptop line on Flickr.

Schasiepen’s MacBook Pro concept is wedge-shaped, which is a trait of Apple’s MacBook Air product line as opposed to the flat MacBook Pro currently on store shelves. Instead of featuring a lid that blends in with the unibody base, Schasiepen’s concept has a shiny metal trim around the lid, which reminds me of the detailing on the iPhone 3GS.

The fantasy specs of Schasiepen’s laptop include a Retina display, black and white options for the bezel, a 1080p FaceTime Camera, 2 cm thickness, USB 3.0, and, as a nice touch, glass keys. If the chicklet keyboard featured glass keys, that would actually be a selling point for me. One of the features that really impressed me with the iPhone 4 is that its casing was made of glass and metal when other smart phones on the market were using cheap plastic. (I’m not kidding, before the iPhone 4 was announced I considered buying the HTC Hero.)

With Apple’s WWDC approaching, we’re likely to hear more rumors about the next MacBook in the coming weeks, if not an official announcement from Apple.

For those of you who have had their iPhone’s tethering feature restricted by your carrier, here’s some good news: MiWi 5 has been updated today to support iOS 5.1.1. MyWi 5 allows your iPhone to share its 3G connection through bluetooth, WiFi, and USB, as with the iPhone’s stock tethering app, however it also includes a few exotic options such as several different modes of WiFi bridging, settings to adjust broadcast power to conserve battery life, and the usually annoying blue tether bar displays bandwidth used during your tethering session.

MyWi 5 supports Wifi, USB, and Bluetooth tethering

The only downside is that, at $19.99, MyWi 5 is somewhat pricey for an iPhone app. However that is a one-time fee, and likely cheaper than what your carrier is offering for the privilege of actually using the bandwidth you paid for. If you have already purchased MyWi 5, the update is free, and that includes those of you who purchased the app when the Rock app store was a viable alternative to Cydia.

You can find MyWi 5 on Cydia in the ModMyi repository. The Cydia page says it supports any jailbroken iPhone or iPad running 3.1.2 or later. Keep in mind that if your carrier is watching your iPhone’s traffic, they still may charge you a fee for using tethering.

Following the earlier report, 9To5Mac has posted clearer pictures of the next generation iPhone’s alleged back panels of both the black and white phones. The pictures make it clear that the changes include a thinner dock connector, bigger speakers, a 3.5 mm headphone jack located at the bottom of the device, and, indeed, a taller aspect ratio. If these parts turn out to be genuine, it seems that a previous rumor was right on the money.

The pictures also include the next iPhone’s front panel, as well as the sim card tray seen earlier. It seems that these leaks of the next generation iPhone might even be consistent with the square-based home button leaked in late April.

9To5Mac’s source claims that the next generation iPhone will be the same width as the current model, though thinner and taller. Possibly the rumored 4 inch, 1136 by 640 screen.

This presents all kinds of backwards compatibility issues for dock accessories, cases, apps; the whole shebang. Apple has unsupported old hardware in the past, but this would be the first physical connector change of its kind, and the first aspect ratio shift for the iPhone screen. This would be a very dramatic move for Apple.

The Apple World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2012 begins June 11th, which is hardly a week away. We’re expecting the company to unveil iOS 6 with a new Maps.app and what not. That’s not all that’ll be happening at this years conference though. Those lucky enough to get their tickets will be treated with a whole list of events and labs.

Apple has posted the complete schedule for the 5 days over at its Developer site, which details all of the things that you with your ticket will be doing. You can keep yourself organized and not faint and miss all the labs and events by downloading the updated WWDC 2012 app. The official app will tell you all about the events, where to be at what time and show you around the place as well. It’s a free download for both iPhone and iPad, but only the attendees can access it. You can also use the app to schedule things so you don’t get confused on where to be. That’s not it though!

There’s more to WWDC than all the great sessions and hands-on labs. It’s also about celebrating the amazing work of our developer community, showing off your skills, learning from inspiring speakers, and just having a fun time together.

9To5Mac reports that iFixyouri, an online iPhone repair company based out of Florida, received a next generation iPhone part from its Chinese suppliers. This isn’t a small component that has little bearing on the iPhone’s design, like the home button or the front camera featured previously. The part in question is allegedly the back panel of the next iPhone, which includes the side panels, an opening for a dock connector, and larger speaker grills.

The back panel features a smaller dock connector, which looks to be about the size of a mini USB port. This would be the first physical departure from Apple’s dock connector since the original iPod (aside from the 2nd generation iPod Shuffle onwards, which uses the 3.5 mm jack to transfer data).

If this leaked part turns out to be genuine, all the existing iPhone and iPod accessories won’t be directly compatible with the next generation iPhone. (Not to mention all the Kickstarter projects which intend to support the next iPhone.) Supposedly this is to allow for the larger speaker grill (personally I’d take backwards compatibility over slightly bigger speakers).

The back panel contains a bar of aluminium (and not liquid metal, according to 9To5Mac). If the back panel is meant to mirror the phone’s screen, then the next iPhone may have a taller display. It does look to be taller, although the perspective is hard to discern from one blurry shot.

All in all, the back case bears a striking resemblance to a previous rumor which predicted a new dock connector, a metal back panel, and a taller screen.

The Photos app on your iOS device doesn’t provide any information on the photo taken. No details such as Time, Date, Place, Size etc can be known from the Photos app, which could be useful at times. You can now solve that problem by installing this new jailbreak tweak called Dater.

Dater Cydia tweak adds a Date and Time stamp at the bottom of every image in your Photos app, making it extremely simple to see when the photo was taken. If you want more information about the photo, such as Format, Size, Dimensions etc, that too can be arranged for. Just tap and hold on to the specific image to see the Image Info option, which shows all the extra things including Location. There are other ways to find out this information, but that requires the iOS device to be plugged into the computer.

There are no options to be configured, except for your credit card number of course. Dater Cydia tweak will cost you $0.99, which isn’t a lot for someone who needs this feature badly. Dater is available in the BigBoss repo right now. Apple should totally add this feature in iOS 6! What do you think?

Apple introduced the Retina display with the iPhone 4 and it was an instant success. Everyone loved the detailing, picture quality, colors, contrast all thanks to the high resolution 960 x 640 resolution and 326ppi on it. However, that was almost 3 years ago and we’ve come a long way.

LG has announced a new range of mobile phone displays, measuring at 5 inches and carrying a full HD resolution of 1980 x 1080. That’s not it, the display has a pixel density of 440 pixels per inch. Now that’s a lot more than what the iPhone’s Retina display has. It uses the same IPS technology that’s being used on the Retina display and boasts a full 16:9 aspect ratio. It was rumored that the next generation iPhone could also get a 16:9 widescreen display, as larger displays are in fashion now.

As smartphones become increasingly valued for how well they do multimedia and with the rapid growth of LTE enabling faster large file transfers, our new 5″ Full HD LCD panel is certain to prove a significant asset to the mobile market. With the world’s highest resolution smartphone display, LG Display continues to remain a step ahead in developing the most innovative in display technology products.

The problem? It’s still a 5 inch display and I honestly don’t think people are going to adopt to such big displays for mobile phones. The new displays from LG should be available in the second half of this year and ready for use in mobile phones.

NoDictation is available in the BigBoss repository on Cydia for free. NoDictation requires iOS 5.1 and will install the dependency gsc.dictation. NoDictation does not add an icon on to the SpringBoard or require any options to be configured. You can disable NoDictation by uninstalling the tweak from Cydia. There’s no indication as to whether this supports the new iPad in addition to the iPhone 4S.

The Chronic Dev Team’s Absinthe 2.0 had an incredible 1.2 million downloads over this past weekend, but it’s not the only thing going on in the mobile customization world. On the Android side of things, the famous CyanogenMod team has just announced that its ROM has reached a whopping 2 million installs this week!

CyanogenMod is easily the most successful 3rd party Android system available right now, and it’s easy to see why. Only months ago, the ROM had reached one million installs, so this newly reached mark is definitely impressive. CyanogenMod’s own CM stat tracker is being used to see the install stats and shows that an additional 11,294 installs have taken place since the 2 million mark was reached.

The ROM has been growing very fast lately and it’s partly due to the fact that manufacturers have taken so long to release Android 4.0 to their users. SlashGear explans:

“CyanogenMod takes whatever the most recent Android system is and tweaks it to what the team sees as perfect, porting it then to masses of Android devices, one after the other. This system ends up putting the newest version of Android on hacked phones quite a bit faster than mobile carriers and manufacturers are able, this drawing in the fans in droves.”

The team works very hard and has a huge community around it that is always willing to help test out early builds. This speeds up the whole process of developing and releasing the final software to the masses. CyanogenMod is currently on version 9 and will most definitely release 10 when the next Android OS comes out. The CM team has a very bright future ahead of them as they have built a great fanbase around their popular ROM.
