How "green" are your gadgets?

Reuters | LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Green is in like never before at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, with 3,000 square feet of dedicated floor space and companies touting the energy-saving, earth-friendly attributes of their gadgets. On display are "eco-buttons" that reduce your computer's power consumption, e-lanterns that produce an hour's worth of light if you crank them for a minute, luminous TV screens that use far less energy than standard TVs and even mercury-free batteries that are 94 percent recyclable. But in the absence of a uniform global standard that certifies a product as "green," are environment-conscious consumers buying more green hype than green engineering? Not necessarily, said Jeff Omelchuck, director of the Green Electronics Council, which provides an Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) certification for computers. The EPEAT provides manufacturers with a set of criteria against which to measure their products' environmental impact. "Electronics are in fact much more environmentally friendly today than even five years ago," Omelchuck, an engineer, told Reuters. But that does not mean gadgets are "sustainable" -- leaving no adverse impact on the environment as they make their way from the factory to a recycling unit -- which would make them truly green, Omelchuck added. "Companies are making products greener because the market expects them to," he added. GREEN DOLLARS This year, manufacturers are also touting the energy efficiency of their products to draw consumers who are spending fewer dollars on discretionary products due to the recession. While that is a start, environmental activists and analysts say any energy savings from a so-called green device will be offset if it uses highly toxic batteries or cannot be recycled. Gadgets will be truly green when companies employ more eco-friendly manufacturing processes, packaging, design and recycling programs as part of a holistic approach to sustainability, they added. "Consumers shouldn't have to choose between products that are incredibly green in one area, but grey in another," said Casey Harrell, a toxics campaigner for Greenpeace International. On Friday, the pro-environment group held a news conference at CES to share highlights from a December green electronics survey. Harrell said at the conference the electronics industry has taken "encouraging strides" toward improving green features on some gadgets in the past year. But the absence of an international standard makes it tough for consumers to decide which gadgets are greenest. Greenpeace's assessment of about 50 electronics products found Lenovo Group Ltd's L2440x wide computer monitor, Sharp Corp's LC-52GX5 television, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd 's F268 mobile phone, Nokia's 6210 smartphone and Toshiba Machine Co Ltd's Portege R600 laptop were the greenest in their categories. SCREEN TECHNOLOGY Earlier this week, Samsung Electronics introduced a flat- screen TV that uses 40 percent less energy because it uses light-emitting diode technology rather than the traditional cathode lamps. "The advantage of LED TVs is that they are environmentally friendly, can save a lot of power, use no mercury or lead and have a high picture quality," said Jongwoo Park, Samsung's president of digital media. LG Electronics Inc devoted part of its CES display to showcasing green products, including a Bluetooth solar car kit and recyclable packaging materials. Toshiba showcased an ion battery designed for bicycle maker Schwinn's electronic bike, which gives up to 30 miles on a single charge. Parker Brugge, vice president of environmental affairs at the Consumer Electronics Association, said companies have an inherent incentive to go green because it produces better gadgets. Making a television more energy efficient also makes it last longer and heat up less, he said. What is more, the show host, has itself gotten greener by reducing brochures and paper usage, and offering booths made of recyclable parts. "Everyone has to do their part," he added.

Israel's military on Saturday issued a warning to residents of the Gaza Strip that it intends to intensify its offensive against Palestinian militants, who continued to launch rockets into the Jewish state. Aircraft dropped leaflets warning that the Israeli army will continue attacking tunnels, weapons caches and terrorists with increasing force throughout the Gaza Strip. Gaza medics say about half of the dead are civilians. Israel says it is not targeting civilians and has accused Hamas gunmen of launching rockets from populated areas. Hamas also sent a delegation to Egypt, but it has vowed not to accept a cease-fire plan that does not end Israel's offensive in Gaza, and end its blockade of the territory. Brain exercises
Memory, like muscular strength, is a "use it or lose it" proposition. The more you work out your brain, the better you'll be able to process and remember information.
Novelty and sensory stimulation are the foundation of brain exercise. If you break your routine in a challenging way, you're using brain pathways you weren't using before. This can involve something as simple as brushing your teeth with your nondominant hand, which activates little- used connections on the nondominant side of your brain. Or try a "neurobic" exercise - an aerobic exercise for your brain - (see Keep Your Brain Alive Exercise) that forces you to use your faculties in unusual ways, like showering and getting dressed with your eyes closed. Take a course in a subject you don't know much about, learn a new game of strategy, or cook up some recipes in an unfamiliar cuisine. That's the most effective way to keep your synapses firing.
General guidelines to improve memory
In addition to exercising your brain, there are some basic things you can do to improve your ability to retain and retrieve memories:
1.Pay attention . You can't remember something if you never learned it, and you can't learn something - that is, encode it into your brain - if you don't pay enough attention to it. It takes about eight seconds of intent focus to process a piece of information through your hippocampus and into the appropriate memory center. So, no multitasking when you need to concentrate! If you distract easily, try to receive information in a quiet place where you won't be interrupted.
2.Tailor information acquisition to your learning style . Most people are visual learners; they learn best by reading or otherwise seeing what it is they have to know. But some are auditory learners who learn better by listening. They might benefit by recording information they need and listening to it until they remember it.
3.Involve as many senses as possible . Even if you're a visual learner, read out loud what you want to remember. If you can recite it rhythmically, even better. Try to relate information to colors, textures, smells and tastes. The physical act of rewriting information can help imprint it onto your brain.
4.Relate information to what you already know . Connect new data to information you already remember, whether it's new material that builds on previous knowledge, or something as simple as an address of someone who lives on a street where you already know someone.
5.Organize information . Write things down in address books and datebooks and on calendars; take notes on more complex material and reorganize the notes into categories later. Use both words and pictures in learning information.
6.Understand and be able to interpret complex material . For more complex material, focus on understanding basic ideas rather than memorizing isolated details. Be able to explain it to someone else in your own words.
7.Rehearse information frequently and "over- learn" . Review what you've learned the same day you learn it, and at intervals thereafter. What researchers call "spaced rehearsal" is more effective than "cramming." If you're able to "over-learn" information so that recalling it becomes second nature, so much the better.
8.Be motivated and keep a positive attitude. Tell yourself that you want to learn what you need to remember, and that you can learn and remember it. Telling yourself you have a bad memory actually hampers the ability of your brain to remember, while positive mental feedback sets up an expectation of success.
Mnemonic devices to improve memory
Mnemonics (the initial "m" is silent) are clues of any kind that help us remember something, usually by causing us to associate the information we want to remember with a visual image, a sentence, or a word.
Common types of mnemonic devices include:
1.Visual images - a microphone to remember the name "Mike," a rose for "Rosie." Use positive, pleasant images, because the brain often blocks out unpleasant ones, and make them vivid, colorful, and three- dimensional - they'll be easier to remember.
2.Sentences in which the first letter of each word is part of or represents the initial of what you want to remember. Millions of musicians, for example, first memorized the lines of the treble staff with the sentence "Every good boy does fine" (or "deserves favor"), representing the notes E, G, B, D, and F. Medical students often learn groups of nerves, bones, and other anatomical features using nonsense sentences.
3.Acronyms , which are initials that creates pronounceable words. The spaces between the lines on the treble staff, for example, are F, A, C, and E: FACE.
4.Rhymes and alliteration : remember learning "30 days hath September, April, June, and November"? A hefty guy named Robert can be remembered as "Big Bob" and a smiley co- worker as "Perky Pat" (though it might be best to keep such names to yourself).
5.Jokes or even off- color associations using facts, figures, and names you need to recall, because funny or peculiar things are easier to remember than mundane images.
6."Chunking" information; that is, arranging a long list in smaller units or categories that are easier to remember. If you can reel off your Social Security number without looking at it, that's probably because it's arranged in groups of 3 , 2 , and 4 digits, not a string of 9.
7."Method of loci" : This is an ancient and effective way of remembering a lot of material, such as a speech. You associate each part of what you have to remember with a landmark in a route you know well, such as your commute to work.

ABS-CBN is Best TV Station in Northern Luzon

ABS-CBN was chosen by the University of Baguio Mass Communication Department as the "Best TV Station" in Northern Luzon. According to TV Patrol Northern Luzon, it was the very first award given to any local TV Network.

Bombo Radyo Baguio was awarded as the "Best AM Station" and Midland Courier received the "Best Newspaper" award.

The award-giving body aims to motivate Mass Communication students and graduates to give their best performance at all times.

And, yes, we know that beauty is only skin deep, but nothing is a more unpleasant sight than a gorgeous woman/man with bad hair.
Luckily, there is a way out of this predicament and, believe it or not, it has been available for centuries since it's an all-natural and accessible remedy. Coconut oil has been used extensively in countries like India ever since we could remember but it is just now that its entire range of extraordinary effects has become known all over the world. Even if this may sound somewhat strange, coconut oil is the perfect solution to get your hair looking exactly like you see in shampoo commercials - minus the lighting and post-production tricks.
The only thing you have to do in order to get that shiny and healthy looking mane you've always dreamed of but in search of which you actually managed to ruin what little was still left of it, is to go out to some naturist shop and buy yourself a container of coconut oil. Once you get home, put some water to boil, as the oil has a very hard consistency and you can't apply it on your hair as such, and then drop the container in it once it reaches boiling point. When you remove it (with proper care not to burn yourself, of course), you will notice that the oil can now be easily applied on your hair.

This point reached, you have now two options: either you go for the all-night treatment or for a "steam-towel-wrap" that shouldn't take more than 15 minutes, half an hour tops, of your precious time. In both cases, the oil is applied evenly on the hair (use a comb if it helps, but make sure that you massage the roots in particular), before bedtime (for the former variant), or right after a bath (for the latter). Coconut oil is a natural remedy that not only makes your mane shinier and stronger, but it also helps fight against dandruff, excessive hair loss (which, as natural as it might be, is also something all of us are trying to reduce) and weakened hairs. Brillante Mendoza's Serbis won the Best Director and Best Actress award for Gina Pareño in the Pacific Meridian International Film Festival of Asian- Pacific Countries

Held in Vladivostok, Russia from September 13-19. Director Mendoza attended the festival to accept the awards, both of which have substantial cash prizes.
Serbis which premiered to mixed reviews in Cannes main competition last May had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Regent Entertainment has acquired the U.S. distribution and they have confirmed that Serbis will open theatrically in select cities in the U.S. this November. It will have its U.S. premiere as an official selection in the New York Film Festival next month.
Regent Entertainment executives Mark Reinhart (VP for acquisitions) and Jonathon Aubry (VP for Theatrical Marketing) hosted a dinner for Serbis after its first screening in Toronto. Also present in the dinner were director Mendoza, French co- producer Dider Costet, producer Ferdinand Lapuz, and Fortissimo executives Michael Werner and Wouter Barendrecht.
With the release of Serbis this year, Regent said it is possible that it will qualify for the best foreign language film category in the Golden Globes awards and critics awards like the Los Angeles and New York Film Critics Awards.
Michael and Wouter announced that they have finalized the Canadian deal of Serbis for Maximum Distribution for English Canada and Seville Pictures for French Canada.
French co-producer Didier Costet is also releasing Serbis in France this November. Equation (the distributing arm of Swift Productions) is handling the French distribution of the film.
Mendoza's Foster Child was released in France last February by Ad Vitam and the DVD will be released this month. The movie about petty thieves operating in Quiapo, Tirador, acquired by Swift Distribution will be released in France next year.
Thailand 's Sahamongko Films plans to release Serbis later this year. Other territories which acquired Serbis so far are Benelux with Paradiso Entertainment, Singapore and Brunei with Cathay, Portugal with Lusomundo, Greece with Seven Films and in Israel with United King.
Serbis produced by Centerstage Productions and Swift Productions was written by Armando Lao also featured Jaclyn Jose, Julio Diaz, Kristoffer King, Mercedes Cabral, Dan Alvaro, Roxanne Jordan, and Coco Martin.
Earlier this year, Direk Dante's Tirador won the Caligari Prize Award in Berlin's Forum section and the Best Film, Director and Netpac Awards in Singapore. Foster Child won the Signis Award in Las Palmas and the Best Film and Best Actress (for Cherry Pie Picache) awards in Singapore.
The acclaimed Filipino director will attend the New York screening of Serbis on October 12 . He will also serve as instructor at the Asian Film Academy (September 25 to October 12) in Pusan, Korea. World-renowned Asian director Hou Hsiao Hsien will be this year's Dean of the AFA.
This November, Direk Dante will be a jury member in the international competition section of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in Greece where Serbis is screening in the Independence Days section with Francis Pasion's Jay. "Himala" is included in Top 18 Asian films-CNN

Twenty-six years after it was shown in the Philippines, Nora Aunor's Himala is once again in the spotlight. The 1982 Ishmael Bernal film about a faith healer is the only Filipino film that entered the Best Asian Films of all Time chosen by CNN UK (United Kingdom).
The writer of this piece, Mairi Mackay, points out that Asia is home to 4 billion people in 70 countries. As such, it responsible for half of the world's film output.
The Ishmael Bernal movie is cited for having "austere camera work, haunting score and accomplished performances sensitively portray the harsh social and cultural conditions that people in the third world endure."
In Himala (which translates to Miracle), Nora Aunor portrayed Elsa, a simple barrio lass who believes that she has seen apparitions of the Virgin Mary--allowing her to go on a healing crusade in her small town. Locally, Himala won nine of 11 awards given at the 1982 Metro Manila Filmfest including Best Story/Screenplay, Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design. Written by Ricky Lee, this dramatic film also won the Bronze Hugo Award during the 19th edition of the Chicago Film Festival.
ASIA'S BEST. The other entries are works of acclaimed Asian directors such as Akira Kurosawa (Ikiru, 1952 ) and Wong Kar-Wai (In the Mood for Love, 2000 ). CNN grouped New Zealand as part of Asia and came up with 2 entries for this list: Whale Rider (2002 ) and Utu (1983).
Mother India (1957 ) was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film of the Academy Awards. Others were shortlisted for the Cannes Film Fest such as In The Mood for Love (2000 ) and The Ballad of Narayama (1958 ), which won the Palme d'Or in 1984.
Some of the films chosen proved to have a major influence on Hollywood films. Japan's 1998 film Shall We Dansu? is the basis of the 2004 Hollywood flick starring Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere. A Touch of Zen (1969), a kung fu movie from Hong Kong/Taiwan, had a massive influence on Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon starring Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh.

Orcollo bags Guinness 9-Ball crown in Guangzhou

The Philippines' Dennis Orcollo improved on his runner-up finish in the Singapore leg of the Guinness 9 -Ball Championships by winning the Guangzhou, China stop by beating Chinese-Taipei's Wang Hung Hsiang in the finals, 11-7.
Orcollo whipped the "Son of Pool" Yang Ching Shun in the semis after compatriot Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan. Incidentally, Pagulayan defeated Orcollo in Singapore.
Pagulayan, meanwhile, blew a great chance for an all-Filipino final when he lost a 9-8 heartbreaker to Wang that was a mixture of some spectacular shots and forgettable errors. On Pagulayan's part, his gambles backfired during safety battles.
In the final battle, Wang took a 2-1 lead. Orcollo then ran off six of the next seven racks to lead 7-3 after a breathtaking safety battle marked by an incredible safety by the Filipino who is ranked No. 1 in the world.
A lucky bank shot on the 1 -ball enabled Wang to come to within 5-7 before he broke to get one more rack back to come to within one at 6-7 . But Orcollo quickly eased the pressure somewhat to open up a two-rack lead at 8-6.
After Orcollo, who was leading 7-3 , squandered his chances with a poor miss on the number 2 ball, Wang who won four of the last five racks closed to within one, 8-7 , before the Filipino played a fantastic jump shot to go ahead, 9-7 . He then cut the cue ball between the 4 and 6 balls to get to the hill 9-7.
Both players felt the pressure and committed a series of errors but when Wang missed a fairly straightforward shot on the 2 ball which would have given him a chance to join Orcollo on the hill at 10-10.
Orcollo seized the opportunity to clean up and pocket the top prize of $15 ,000.

Stay away from Chinese milk products, says BFAD

The Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) on Friday advised mothers to stop buying Chinese milk products following reports that four children have died amid a China health scandal.
"I would advise the parents or mothers it's better to probably buy milk brands from reputable companies...For the moment, stay away from [milk] products coming from China," BFAD Director Leticia Gutierrez told ABS-CBN News Channel.
Gutierrez said that while Chinese milk brands are not available in Philippine market, she has instructed BFAD inspectors to collect samples from different milk distribution outlets for testing. The samples will be brought to the BFAD laboratory for testing of presence of toxic chemical melamine, a chemical normally used in plastics but which can be used to mask low protein levels in foods.
"For the last two days, the inspectors have gone around and they've not found any milk powder manufactured by Sanlu group," she said.
At least four babies have died and some 6 ,244 other infants have become sick after consuming melamine-contaminated milk products. The scandal snowballed late this week, with the government admitting that melamine had been discovered in regular milk and other dairy products such as ice cream, leading to mass recalls across the country.
The Chinese government's quality watchdog has released an initial list of milk manufacturing companies using the deadly toxin.

No truth to rumors of Ely Buendia's death

Former Eraserheads frontman Ely Buendia dead? Perish the thought.
This, in essence was the response of Day Cabuhat, Ely's manager, after rumors of Buendia's death circulated like wildfire early this week.
"He (Ely) is alive and well and eating pistachios," Cabuhat said.
Cabuhat said the 37 - year-old vocalist just laughed at reports that he had died after undergoing an angioplasty last September 1 following the aborted Eraserheads' reunion concert last month.
Buendia experienced chest pains and reportedly collapsed backstage after the first set of the long- awaited reunion concert held at the Fort Bonifacio Open Field in Taguig City on August 30. He was transferred to the Philippine Heart Center (PHC) the next day after being treated at the Makati Medical Center's emergency room.
Cabuhat assured Buendia's fans and supporters that the Pupil frontman is now doing better and is recovering from surgery.-abs-cbnNEWS.com

Charice Pempengco performs duet with Celine Dion at Madison Square Garden

The country's pride, Charice again proved that dreams do come true after she performed a duet with one of her favorite international stars -- Celine Dion, September 15, Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
In the concert dubbed as "Taking Chances World Tour, "Charice sang the hit "Because You Loved Me" with her idol Celine.
The song was actually chosen for and dedicated to Charice's strength and love -- her mom Raquel Pempengco.
In the concert, the Canadian international star first told the life story of Charice.
"This young girl's name is Charice. I'm so excited. She's 16 years old and she's from the Philippines. Let me tell you she has a voice that can literally blow the roof off Madison Square. But the real story is, Charice and her mom escaped a terrifying experience and had to leave Charice's violent father. You know, to start a life on their own, Charice vowed to save her mom from life's desperation. Through prayers and dreams and God-given talent, an incredible voice, Charice entered and won every singing contest in her native country and eventually got noticed. By such a fortunate chance people saw the show on Oprah and Oprah wanted to take her under her wing and David Foster joined them.
"I had a chance to see Charice perform one of my songs in Oprah last week. I have a little difficulty to talk right now because I met Charice and I'm so emotional and so I'm searching and looking for my words trying to control my emotion. I invited here to come her tonight to sing with me...," said Celine Dion.
After Celine's lovely introduction to Charice she invited her to come up on stage and join her. Celine then told Charice how spectacular she is and how she looked really beautiful.
Celine asked the young diva how she feels to be with her on the same stage. Charice admitted that she's nervous but Celine calmed her and said that she does not have to be.
"First of all you look spectacular you're beautiful, you're shaking, how do you feel? Don't be nervous I think people will understand that you're nervous. But let me tell you one thing, the talent we're not going to talk about because you have that, we're not going to talk about strength because you have that (Celine pointing to Charice's mom Raquel Pempengco) and so the love. And I have to tell you that the family we have to talk about because you have that too. One time my manager, my husband told me 'Celine', because when I started to sing I was 12 years old so 12 and 16, it's the same, okay?
"He told me 'Celine I know you're nervous, don't be scared. You love to sing. When you go up there you'll be nervous don't be.' I will give you an image that you can think about, think about that. All the people you see in front of you are your brothers and sisters. You are singing in your living room and it's your family," Celine told Charice.
Charice in return said that she was ready to sing and agreed to dedicate their song "Because You Loved Me" to her mother Raquel.
The crowd, in a standing ovation, roared and praised Celine and Charice after their performance.
"You did amazing, and the roof of the Madison (blew) up tonight," said Celine.
Celine also said that she loved Charice and that she could not wait to perform with Charice for a full concert.
"When you do perform in Madison Square are you going to invite me? I love you and I can not wait to be with you to perform here for a whole concert," Celine said before she let Charice leave the concert stage.
In Oprah
It will be recalled that Charice guested on Oprah Winfrey's show for the second time last September 9, Tuesday.
Charice thought that she will just have an ordinary conversation with Oprah's "Washington viewer" but she was shocked when her idol Celine appeared on live video conference and gave her message for the young diva.
While crying, Charice listened to Celine's message: "Hi Charice! I have to tell you that I'm speechless. I have heard you sing. I have seen a little of your life story and I am extremely ecstatic like the rest of the world who's watching right now..."I can't tell you that we have lots of things in common and I also had a mother who is my strength... You have more talent than most people. You can sing, you can speak and sing with your heart, you can play guitar... and you can have dreams because your life story is quite a painful one. Thank God your strength comes from your mother and your heart will go on."
But what made Charice burst into tears was when Celine offered a special number with her, an offer that Charice will treasure forever.
"If I may, I would love to do something very special with you. Next week, I'm going to be singing at Madison Square Garden and I would love to ask you to come and sing a duet with me. And we can sing together. Maybe we can sing "Because You Loved Me" and maybe we can dedicate this song to your mother. So I hope you can travel to New York and meet with me," says Celine.
Charice earlier told abs-cbnNEWS.com how excited she was to see her idol.
"Naku talagang happy ako kung makikita ko siya. Kahit hindi ko na siya maka-duet okay na sa akin 'yon," she said.
Charice shared that she would put a checkmark on her dream drawing book where she had drawn Celine's face. Included in Charice's dream drawing book is the famous tenor Andrea Bocceli.
Last July 20th, Charice wowed Italians as she performed at Teatro del Silenzio in Tuscany, Italy with Bocelli for the tenor's birthday concert dubbed "The Cinema Tribute." Yahoo opens its doors to hackers

SUNNYVALE - Hackers armed with laptop computers, camping tents and dreams of software glory invaded Yahoo during the weekend as the Internet pioneer opened its strategy and its doors to outside developers.
The "hackathon" was as much a symbol of Yahoo rising from the ashes of a burned-out courtship with US technology colossus Microsoft as it was a chance for software wizards to work their magic on Yahoo's platform.
The approximately 300 hackers that swept onto the firm's campus in Sunnyvale, California, had the first chance to tinker with the inner workings of Yahoo online offerings such as its globally popular free email.
Yahoo earlier in the week outlined a shift to an "Open Strategy" that it believes will jazz-up the website and lead to meshing offerings from hot online properties such as Amazon and iTunes with its web pages.
"Open is a really important strategy for us," Yahoo Developer Network head Chris Yeh told AFP as hackers fueled up on pizza, keg beer and caffeine-based energy drinks for all-night software writing sessions.
"It is a new course for the ship. Our ability to turn Yahoo from a company that owns and operates its own sites to a company that lets other people in on the action is a critical growth moment. This is really exciting."
Breaking down walls between websites where people store digitized photos, videos, messages, and musings is a trend that's overdue, according to Internet users and developers.
"It's something that really needs to happen," Developer Ryan Moore said as he worked on a hack in a purple-and-yellow armchair overlooking sand volleyball courts. "It's the way everything ought to work."
Yahoo announced plans to revamp its homepage in coming months to allow people to customize home pages with mini- applications, including those crafted by third- party developers and vetted by Yahoo.
"Jerry (Yang) and I are dedicated to keeping that spirit of openness and innovation alive, but we know that we can't come up with all the great ideas ourselves," Yahoo co- founder David Filo wrote in a 'Hack Day' message.
"Hackers, bring it on."
Hackers working alone or in teams set up camps in booths or tables in URL's Cafe in the heart of Yahoo's campus while others retreated to classrooms or stuffed chairs on the second floor of the two-story building.
"This is the Yahoo that you know; that you've always dealt with," said Moore, who attended the company's first and only other US hack day in 2006.
"It's the old Yahoo: 'We have eyeballs; we have data -- have at it.' "
Some broke from coding intermittently through the night to nap in tents pitched in a grassy courtyard or play classic arcade videogames including Pac-Man and Galaga.
Musically inclined hackers tested their skills on faux instruments playing pretend rock stars in the Rock Band video game.
Nearly 50 "hacks" were completed by the time the event wrapped after dark on Saturday.
Software creations included a "Ganzbot" robot that reads people news, weather, Twitter messages or other information streamed to their home pages by automated delivery mechanisms known as "feeds."
An Icarus.tv hack served up music videos in online radio style, scouring the Internet and fetching performances that promise to fit people's tastes.
"The people here from Yahoo are psyched, excited," Yeh said. "It's a great event. It is one of the things we can rally about as a company."
Yahoo claims more than 500 million users worldwide but has been struggling to cash-in on its popularity.
Yahoo's sagging fortunes and Google's ascension as Internet advertising king prompted Microsoft on January 31 to offer to buy Yahoo for 44.6 billion dollars in a half- cash, half-stock deal.
Microsoft was eager to combine online resources with Yahoo in order to better battle Google.
Microsoft walked away from negotiations May 3 after Yahoo rejected an offer it raised from 31 dollars to 33 dollars per share, which amounted to 47.5 billion dollars.
Yahoo subsequently made a deal with Google to put its online advertising expertise to work on Yahoo websites. That deal is to take effect later this year if it passes muster with US anti- trust regulators.
"It's been a remarkable year so far and it is going to continue to be a remarkable year," Yeh said. "I like interesting times. I think when things are in flux good things happen."

Boracay, Palawan among Asia's top vacation spots

Travelers from all over the region have chosen Boracay Island and Palawan province in the Philippines as two of the best holiday destinations in Asia this year, according to a Web poll by online travel magazine Smart Travel Asia.
The 2008 online poll showed Boracay and Palawan ranking seventh and eighth respectively in the top 10 holiday destinations in Asia. Palawan shared eighth place with Chiang Mai, Thailand. Both Philippine destinations were jointly ranked seventh in the 2007 Smart Travel Asia poll.
Boracay is famous for its white sand beaches, which make it a popular tourist spot in the country. On the other hand, Palawan is rated by National Geographic Traveler magazine as the best island destination in East and Southeast Asia region in 2007 , and the 13th best island in the world having "incredibly beautiful natural seascapes and landscapes." Some of the most famous tourist spots in Palawan are the Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, Coron Bay in Busuanga and the El Nido Marine Reserve Park.
The otherworldy Bali, Indonesia was chosen Asia's top holiday destination in the Smart Travel Asia poll for the third straight year followed by Phuket, Thailand; Kerala, India; the island republic of Maldives; shopping mecca Hong Kong and Bangkok, Thailand. Angkor, Cambodia ranked ninth place while Koh Samui, Thailand and Rajasthan, India both shared tenth place.
Smart Travel Asia said the poll results revealed the continued dominance of Thailand as a "holiday brand" with four destinations in the Top Ten, and the strong emergence of India.
The same poll also showed El Nido Resort Lagen Island in Palawan ranking among the top 25 leisure hotels and resorts in Asia this year.
According to Smart Travel Asia, the poll results reflect the online voters' "substantial hands-on travel experience, word-of-mouth at dinnertime chats, as well as an idea of the brand drawn from advertising and editorial exposure in the media, which is mostly online." Smart Travel Asia is the region's only dedicated online travel magazine with over one million readers worldwide.

Billy Crawford promises to come back to the Philippines as a Kapamilya

While the finale of PinoyDreamAcademy Season 2 meant a new beginning for winner Laarni Lozada, it also marked an ending of sorts for host Billy Crawford. Now that PDA is over, will he be bidding the Philippines goodbye? ABS-CBN.com caught up with the international performer backstage right after the PDA finale to ask him about his plans.
"I'm leaving October 25 , after that I'm coming back, then I'm leaving again. My album is done that's why I'm leaving. I'll be promoting it and be taking care of my work on the other side of the world. First I'll be going to France, then London, Belgium, Germany, then back to the States," shared the 26-year-old singer- dancer. Billy is a well- known recording artist in Europe having released chart-topping singles in France, Germany, and Belgium, among others.
But Billy said that he will always find time to come back and perform for Filipino audiences. "I'm not leaving like forever. I'll be coming back. I'll always keep it touch with the people who supported me." Could fellow PDA host Nikki Gil be one of the people he will keep in close contact with? Rumor has it that a romance has been brewing between the two. Although Billy and Nikki have admitted that they do go out from time to time, either just the two of them or with friends, they said that they are just merely getting to know one another and enjoying each other's company.
Billy expressed his deep thanks to everyone who watched and supported him every afternoon on Uberture. The three months he spent hosting the show is an experience that this international Kapamilya will treasure wherever his talents will take him. "The experience taught me how to be free, to just be myself. I was given the opportunity to just enjoy what I do. Salamat po sa lahat ng nanood, mami-miss ko kayong lahat."
When asked if he would like to host PDA Season 3, Billy replied, "If God gives me the opportunity to host again, why not? If they still like my kakulitan, 'Anu nanyanyari dito?!' (laughs) It will be great!"

"CORY" The Musical

Former Miss Saigon star Isay Alvarez still finds it hard to believe that she was given the honor of portraying the role of the Philippines' first female president.
"My initial reaction was 'yes, go' because I'll be working again with Nestor Torre...and to play Cory was a great honor. But after a while nung nag-sink in na sa akin na ako yung magiging Cory, bigla akong natakot. I wanted to back out. It's not an easy role, it's very demanding...she's President Cory," said the singer-stage actress.
Written and directed by Nestor Torre, the "Cory" musical presents the life story of Ms. Corazon Aquino from her childhood until her installment as president by the much- admired 1986 People Power Revolution.
Given this time frame, Alvarez mentions how there will be numerous costume changes, as well as an illustration of another side of Cory Aquino, a side that the public eye has never seen. She said, "People usually see Cory Aquino as very composed...here you'll see a different side of her."
The libretto was created by Bing Pimentel, songwriter and wife of Senator Koko Pimentel. After learning of Cory Aquino's colon cancer, she was inspired to create a musical in her honor.
"This musical is a tribute to President Cory," Alvarez adds.
The musical cast of "Cory" also includes Robert Sena as former President Ferdinand Marcos, Pinky Marquez as wife Imelda, and Sherwyn Sozon as Ninoy Aquino.

The MYX VJ Search 2008

There are two things that go hand-in-hand when watching a music channel -- great music videos and a cool and charismatic video jock.
Great videos served up by a witty and funny personality who is in love with the music, and isn't afraid to show it.
Myx, the number one music channel in the country took the concept of a video jock to the next level with a combination of star power and innovative show platforms.
Among the names who joined the illustrious ranks of Myx VJs were the likes of Michi Valeriano, Ala Paredes, Heart Evangelista and Karel Marquez, among others. The current roster of Myx VJs are Luis Manzano, Iya Villania and Nikki Gil who have also made names for themselves in the entertainment industry.
Last year, Myx held the first-ever MYX VJ Search, where they scoured the country for the best and the brightest. Hundreds trooped to the auditions to make it to one of twelve finalist spots. The group had to undergo a series of challenges to test if they had what it takes to become the new face of the channel.
From hosting a number of Myx events to serving up the tunes as VJs on various playlist and countdown shows. In the end, voters and judges saw star potential in winners Sanya Smith, Andrei Felix, Igi Guerrero and Mica Froilan. Since then, they have taken control of the microphone, hosting all things Myx, from playlist shows to rockin' campus tours.
After the success of last year's search, the channel decided to give more young people the chance of a lifetime to become part of the Myx family with the Myx VJ Search 2008 . After three weekends of auditions, Myx channel head Andre Allan Alvarez and his production team found 12 budding talents to make up this year's batch of finalists. These kids are eager to show off their combination of wit and music-savvy for a shot at being a VJ.
Now the ball is in the hands of each of the finalists, as they to battle it out in a series of challenges, both on-ground and on- air - in a bid to impress both the judges and the viewers to claim the top prize. They will take turns doing hosting duties on shows like Pop Myx, reading viewer requests on My Myx and counting down the top hits on the Myx Daily Top Ten.
Impressing the viewers will play a key part in the Myx VJ Search finalists' quest for the 'gold,' as they get to cast their votes for their favorites. They just need to tune in to Myx 24 /7 to find out which of the finalists they think deserve to become the next Myx VJ. Each VJ will be assigned a number to help identify them in the voting. The viewers just need to key in MYXVJ(space)(number of VJ finalist) and send to 2366.
Text votes will make up 30 % of the total score during the big finals night. So cast your votes now, because voting only lasts until October 19 , 2008.
On October 21 st at the Trinoma Ayala Mall, the new crop of Myx VJs will be announced. The event will be headlined by the Myx VJ Search 2008 finalists and performances by top local bands. The event is made even grander as it coincides with the third anniversary of Myx Magazine, the biggest-selling music magazine in the country. Zita Ortiga- Survivor Philippines

Washing clothes for a living seemed far from a ticket to join a
reality show. But Zita's strong personality was more than enough to
make her qualified for the game.
Zita's strength was the byproduct of a life marred with hardship.
Growing up in a poor family, she remembers having to exchange
harvested vegetables and wood for pencil and paper she can use in
school.
Just like her mother, Zita ended up working as a helper from one
household to another until she married one of her bosses in 1991 .
However, after having seven children, Zita discovered that she was
also her husband's 7th wife so she decided to leave her family.
Although she had multiple jobs, Zita had a financial crisis and
incurred many debts. Still she hopes that she'll earn enough money to
give her youngest child the education she never had.
With her child's future on the line, the 46- year-old laundrywoman
wants to do whatever it takes to win the grand prize.

Vevherly Gador- Survivor Philippines

Born in Bariles, Cebu, Vevherly was brought up in the farm lifestyle.
At first, this 20-year-old girl will strike you as quiet and timid,
but once she warms up to you, she'll bravely speak her mind.
Beneath Vevherly's charming and pretty face, however, hides a painful
past. Since both her mother and father had separate families, Vevherly
was hidden from relatives and friends for 10 years. When other people
learned about her family, they looked down on her mother and regarded
her as an illegitimate child.
By joining Survivor Philippines, Vevherly, a 4th year Criminology
student from University of Cebu, wants to bring honor back to her
mother and to show her critics that fame can also belong to the farm
girl.
