A colleague recently wrote about a problem with using iPad adapters for connecting to an HDTV or a projector. The HDTV uses an HDMI adapter and the projector uses a VGA adapter. An adapter and cable combination allows some freedom of movement, at least as far as the length of the cable. An Apple TV device eliminates this problem by allowing you to connect without a cable to the projection or display device. But if you prefer to use a cable, here are a few tips that may help.

“I’m a bit reluctant to have it tethered to the TV by a HDMI cable … when we did that in the “early” days of the iPad, the !@#%$#@@^ thing used to fall out in the middle of the presentation.”

That disconnect wil continue to be a problem. I find the Lightning adapters have a tighter fit. However, a lightweight HDMI cable will help by putting less strain on the 30 pin Digital AV Adapter. I travel with this cable from Monoprice – http://tinyurl.com/cb5fouk Other lengths available. They also have a slim series VGA. Great with the iPad VGA adapter.

I also pack a small, cheap plastic clip. This mounts in a corner of one case or attaches to the handstrap on the back of another. I feed the drooping cable through it to take the pressure off the connector. I’ve also used the clip from a name tag.

You may get a “this device is not supported message” when you first connect. Ignore it. My setup works fine. Just give the HDTV a minute to find the iPad signal.

A member of my Master Class recently asked this question:

I’ m curious about the plastic type covers that adhere to the iPad screen. Are these beneficial to the life of it?
Nancy

These screen protectors can help to protect the glass. However, the Gorilla glass on the iPad is a tough product. With reasonable care, a cover or case, and regular cleaning you can keep the glass screen in good condition. You may need one if your iPad will be used in harsh environments or because you need to frequently wipe down the screen. That way, you’re cleaning the screen protector and not the iPad glass screen underneath the film. In that case, spend a little more for a quality film. Less expensive (low quality) ones may interfere with taps, gestures or when using a stylus. Note that most of these screen protectors are challenging to apply. Follow directions carefully to avoid wrinkles, bubbles or trapped dust. Quick tip – removing these films can be tricky. Apply the end of a small piece of painter’s tape or masking tape near one corner. Then use the tape as a tab to help pull the corner of the film loose.

I don’t use a screen protector on any of my iPads. However, I do have a screen protector on my iPhone. I mentioned above that wrinkles, bubbles and trapped dust can be a problem. This is particularly true with screen protection that adheres to the entire screen. You can get protectors that cling only to the bezel or border that surrounds the screen. The one I chose was the GreatShield EZseal Plus. Unfortunately, it is often out of stock at major retailers. Here’s a link to an article with reviews.

A reader recently wrote me concerning problems with iCloud storage space and playing a rented movie. Our edited email exchange appears below. Our discussion should help others to understand what gets stored in iCloud and why having gigabytes (GB) of iCloud space can still generate insufficient space errors on your iPad.

From: Marion

I am using an ipad 2 and need information about how to use icloud. I
have read many online instructions but my screen does not look the
same as the model. I recently upgraded my storage by purchasing extra
but am still short of space. Surely there is some method of me
deciding what goes to icloud and what does not. I would appreciate your comments.

Hi Marion,

For iCloud specific info you can try:

http://www.apple.com/icloud
http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/icloud-itunes/

Thanks for the links but I was hoping to get further than that. If I go into Settings – icloud – I get 2 options. One is to delete account and the 2nd is to manage storage, i.e., buy more storage. I did this a few weeks ago and paid $20 for 10 gig and thought I had solved my storage problem. I recently tried to rent a movie and was told there was insufficient storage. I am at a loss as to what to do. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Marion

I believe I see the problem now. The insufficient storage message you are getting is because you do not have enough room on your iPad to store the movie for playback. This has nothing to do with the iCloud storage capacity. iCloud does not store music, movies or apps.

Movie files tend to be large, a few GB in size. You get this message because your iPad does not have enough space. You will have to delete something and make enough room before you can download the movie to your device. For more on how to find what content is taking up the most space on your iPad see this article.

Thanks for your reply. You can bill me for this if you wish. I have spent ages online seeking information and you seem to be about the only source of knowledge. No music, movies or apps – just what I would like to store. I guess buying extra storage was unnecessary.

iCloud storage:
You get unlimited free storage for purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books. But movies and TV shows are not streamed from iCloud. They are downloaded and played from the memory on your iPad. So you need to have space for them on your device.

You get 5 GB of free iCloud storage for:
• Photos and videos in the Camera Roll
• Device settings (for example: Phone Favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts)

Mandy at LYNKtec contacted me a few weeks back, offering to send samples of the screen cleaning cloths her company sells. Before I reply to any vendor whose product might interest my readers, I spend a little time on the company site and check online reviews of their products. Then I decide if I’ll accept the item for review. My conditions for accepting an item are simple. I retain complete editorial control and my readers always know the item was provided for free. While checking on LYNKtec, I discovered they also sell styluses for the iPad and other portable devices. Turns out their TruGlide stylus products get favorable reviews. Frankly, I was more interested in their stylus than their cloths. I happened to be looking for a stylus I could recommend for a project I was consulting on. So I agreed to accept samples of the cloths and a stylus for possible review. Here’s what arrived.

What first impressed me in this collection was the handwritten notecard Mandy included, a personal invitation for me to enjoy the products. A great first impression.

Now, what about the cloths and the stylus?

As you can see, the ARTcloth isn’t your plain microfiber wipe. The artwork is attractive and each cloth has a side for cleaning and a smoother side for buffing.. I kept one for myself and gave the other as a gift. Some of the artwork designs would look good framed. You can see more than 30 cloth designs at their website.

Let’s take a closer look at the stylus. As you can see in the photos below, the tip on the TruGlide stylus is different. Rather than the rubber nib found on most products, this tip is made of a microfiber mesh. While I don’t know if the claim of 50% smaller is accurate, you can clearly see the difference in size between my rubber tip Kensington stylus and the TruGlide.

This TruGlide model comes in a gift box with a magnetic closure. The TruGlide has a bigger barrel than typical stylus models, but a tapered tip, much like an actual pen. Some may prefer a thinner profile but the TruGlide felt balanced in my hand.

Writing with the TruGlide was smoother than any stylus I’ve tried. Pen strokes seemed almost frictionless. I did notice a faint “squishing” sound occasionally as the microfiber mesh tip contacted the screen, but no drag. Beyond the fluid writing, my favorite feature was the ink pen included at the other end of the stylus. You may have noticed this is the Duo Stylus Pen model. I prefer an iPad stylus that includes an ink pen. The Kensington stylus I compared this to also functions as both stylus and ink pen. However, here’s a big difference. The TruGlide cap snaps snugly on either end. So you don’t need to fiddle with a loose cap and you’re less likely to get separated from it.

Did I like LYNKtec and the TruGlide? Remember that project I mentioned above where I needed to recommend a stylus? I recommended the purchase of 250 TruGlides.

Post Script: A new TruGlide model with an even smaller (5mm) microfiber tip hits the market in a few days. Mandy was kind enough to send me a sample of the new TruGlide Pro Precision Stylus. And no, she had not yet seen this review. You can see the TruGlide Duo and the Pro in the photo below. The Pro model has a replaceable tip. An artist’s paintbrush tip will soon be available. The Duo currently sells for $25.95 and the Pro will be $29.95. Other TruGlide models are available.

A member of my Master Class recently sent me a question about turning the iPad on and off. Here’s an edited version of our exchange.

Message: Hi, I turn off my iPad with the slide bar. Then go to turn it back on with the slide bar. The passcode comes up but when I go to type my numbers in it will not accept them. So I touch the off button and then turn it back on then the slide bar will come up again and then it accepts my passcode numbers. Can you tell me how to fix this?

You don’t need to turn off your iPad with “slide to power off.” Your iPad uses very little power when asleep. So I suggest you put your iPad to sleep instead of turning it off. This is also more convenient than shutting down and then having to restart it every time. Just use the sleep/wake button. Press once rather than holding it down. Or if you have an iPad case with “smart cover” technology, simply close it. This will put the iPad to sleep. Opening the cover will wake it. Apple has a patent on this “smart cover” technology but a number of iPad case and cover manufacturers now use it.

If you are using the Photos app to create albums on the iPad – those albums will not transfer to the PC.

Those albums do not actually contain the photos or copies of the photos. They merely have a pointer to the original photo in the photos app. The albums created in the Photos app are for local photo organization on the iPad only.

You can transfer photos but not albums.
