Fourth-Generation iPod Touch Teardown Photos Posted by FCC

iPod touch 4G teardown photos have appeared on the website of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) аlong with other standard information on radiation emissions required by the FCC for approval.

Here, the FCC got its greasy paws on the new Retina Display-packing iPod touch, aka “Apple A1367,” and in the gallery below you can see exactly where Cupertino keeps that A4 processor, 3.44 watt-hour battery, internal antenna, and 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz WiFi. Images from the FCC’s site show how Apple has been able to pack the iPod touch’s internals into an increasingly thin form factor now checking in at just 0.28 inches thick.

New Apple TV and New iPods at Amazon

Despite Amazon’s rivalry with Apple over media and eBook sales, it’s now offering the new Apple TV and 20 new iPods for sale.

Amazon has even reduced its price on TV shows to match Apple’s price.

The new iPods are currently listed at its retail price, but the older generations have quite attractive discounts, like $40 off the 3^rd generation iPod touch.

What Do iPhone and Android Users Eat?

Coupons.com has recently conducted quite an unusual survey about iPhone and Android users. The results are definitely unexpected: according to the survey, iPhone users are “feminine-smelling, chicken-eating, entertainment-reading fish owners”, while Android users are “manly-scented, pork-eating, news-reading, bird lovers”. Would be interesting to know which category beef-eaters with no pets fall into? Blackberry, maybe?

Astonishing Figures from Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs sticks to his style, and so Apple’s Special Event revealed to us some quite interesting figures. First of all, the impressive number of all iOS devices sold to this day – it’s 120,000,000. Astonishingly, it took Apple 3 years (from June’07 to June’10) to reach 100,000,000, and the last 20,000,000 came in just 3 months. Jobs also boasted that Apple were activating 230,000 new devices per day.

Downloads at App Store have hit the number of 6.5 billion, which is… well, unbelievable. All the more astonishing is that this figure is increasing at a rate of 200 apps in a second. App Store now offers 250,000 apps, 25,000 of which are for the iPad.

Apple Retail Stores now number 300 in 10 countries, with the first store opening in Spain soon. On some days these stores get more than 1,000,000 visitors.

iOS 4.2 coming out in November

Apple’s website new preview page promises the release of iOS 4.2. in near future. Here’s what it says:

Look for iOS 4.2 coming in November for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.1

The footnote reads that the new platform will not be compatible with all the models, so it’s likely that iPod touch G1 and iPhone 2G will miss it out.

New iPod touch 4G and iPod nano 6G Commercials Released

Early in the morning Apple has updated its entire line of iPods for fall 2010, thereby providing iPod touch with the same characteristics as iPhone 4 has. iPod nano will get multi-touch screen, and iPod shuffle -- buttons.

Apple has already released new commercials: one for iPod nano and another one for iPod touch. These commercials show major innovations for iPod that were introduced during its development.

Commercials place particular emphasis on new features, such as high-definition video recording, voice calls using FaceTime and a great number of games that can be played on these devices.

Commercials of iPod nano also show new features of the sixth-generation Nano media players, such as the possibility to rotate things on the multi-touch screen and mount it wherever you want, using the clip on the back panel.

Future iPads: You Want A Camera With That?

Steve Jobs might announce something yesterday he wasn’t supposed to. At yesterday’s event, Jobs indicated that iOS 4.2 would include all of the features included in versions 4.0 and 4.1 for the iPhone. When the iPad’s iOS is updated this November to version 4.2 it will be the first significant upgrade for the device since it debuted last spring.

Would that include HDR photography? If so, this would mean that at some point the iPad will be getting a camera. Perhaps Jobs was simply lost in the moment and meant nothing with his comment. But let’s be honest: Would anyone be surprised to hear that the iPad is getting a camera?

iTunes 10 Now Available to Download

The next version of iTunes includes Ping, a social music discovery tool that allows users to follow friends and artists, helping customers to discover and share new music. The product is based on discovery, allowing users to see what their friends are listening to and what concerts they’re going to. Users can choose to “follow” artists, as well as their friends, and iTunes will populate a customized top 10 list that represents what their friends are downloading. Users can also see concerts that are coming near them, and inform their friends that they will be attending.

iTunes 10 will also ship with a new logo, which Jobs joked reflects the fact that by next Spring, Apple is expected to surpass all CD sales in the U.S. The new iTunes logo dispenses of the CD that was previously featured, and only includes a musical note.

Official Twitter for iPad Application is Now Available!

Finally, we’ve got an official Twitter client for the iPad! It seems to be the most complete version of Twitter client for such devices. Its main characteristics can be found on the official Twitter website.

Panes: When you click on the Tweet, the panel on the right side opens. Depending on the content of the Tweet, you’ll see video, photo, news, or even a Tweet.

Media: When you click on the video link or open the website with embedded video, you can watch the video in the text. You can also click on video to watch it in full screen mode.

Gestures: You can click on the Tweet and quickly view information about the author to leave a response or retweet.

No need to register: You don’t have to register to start using Twitter for iPad. You can also search for the latest news and enjoy watching it. Register at any time to create your own timetable and start tweeting.

Apple announces all new iPod models:

iPod Shuffle with the new VoiceOver button on top, which allows users to hear the name of the currently playing song and to switch between songs, playlists or Genius Mixes- the iTunes feature

10:19AM “So all of us that use iPhone know and love these features, and we can’t wait to get them on our iPads. So when is this coming out? November, and it will be a free update.”

So let’s see folders. I can get into jiggle mode here…” Ha! Now Steve is throwing apps into folders, just like it works on the iPhone.

10:17AM “Sow we get a Print Center icon in the dock — and we can see what job is happening. Now what is AirPlay? Well you know how AirTunes works — we’re changing the name from AirTunes to AirPlay, because you’re going to be able to stream video and audio over WiFi to your devices. More on that in a little bit. Let me show you how it works.”

10:16AM “We’re adding something really cool called AirPlay. So let me give you a feel for printing. We’re in a doc and we want to print, we hit tools, and we hit print…” Pretty simple… it’s printing!

10:15AM “This is all about iPad. All of it is coming to iPad. Wireless printing for iOS.”

10:15AM “Now I have a surprise for you today — a sneak peak at iOS 4.2″

10:15AM “So that’s a peek at many of the things in iOS 4.1… and that is available next week for the iPhone and iPod touch.”

10:13AM They’re showing off multiplayer battles in the game — knight versus knight. “I’m just dragging moves on my screen… here I’m going to drag my boot on your face.” Big laughs for that one.

10:12AM “I’m happy to be here to introduce a new game using Game Center.” “Project Sword is a gorgeous action packed RPG adventure. Everything you see is in realtime.”

10:11AM “Here’s Mike Capps from Epic games to show us a tremendous new game using Game Center.”

10:11AM Steve is running through some of the Game Center challenge features. “So that’s Game Center.”

10:11AM “So here’s Thor, he’s one of my 73 friends, and I’ve got these games that use Game Center and I can look at leaderboards and achievements and everything I’ve done with my friends…”

10:10AM “Another thing we’re adding is Game Center. Game Center is all about multiplayer games. You can challenge your friends or they can challenge you, and if you don’t have any friends we’ll match you with someone.” Ha!

10:09AM It appears to be matching a set of different white balances to make detail pop more.

10:09AM Steve is showing some examples of HDR photography — some pretty big differences here for sure.

10:09AM “So what are High Dynamic Range photos? Well, when you take an image, it actually takes three separate photos, one with highlights, shadows, and midranges… and it combines them together to make HDR photos.”

10:08AM “We’ve fixed a lot of bugs, proximity, Bluetooth, iPhone 3G. Secondly, we’re introducing high dynamic range photos, HD uploads over WiFi, TV rentals…”

10:07AM “We’ve got over 250k apps, and 25k of those are iPad apps. Today we’re introducing iOS 4.1. What’s it all about?”

10:06AM “And iOS apps — over 6.5b apps downloaded. Over 200 every second… whoa! There’s another 200!” Big cheers for that one.

10:06AM “People are throwing around a lot of numbers as to how many of their OS they’re activating per day. We’re activating 230,000 iOS devices a day. We think some of our friends are counting upgrades as well. We think we’re ahead of everybody.”

10:05AM “iOS is our operating system that powers our mobile devices. For us, it’s made the iPhone, the iPad, and the iPod touch possible. So, how many iOS devices have we shipped since we launched the iPhone? 120 million.” Huge applause here.

10:04AM “We do 80,000 one to one classes a week. And of all folks buying Macs, over half are new users.”

10:04AM “Remember when Macworld used to get 30k people coming to it? Well we have days were over 1m people visit our stores.”

Here are the latest news from Apple PR – they will live broadcast their event today:

Apple will broadcast its September 1 event online using Apple’s industry-leading HTTP Live Streaming, which is based on open standards. Viewing requires either a Mac running Safari on Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard, an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad. The live broadcast will begin at 10:00 a.m. PDT on September 1, 2010 at www.apple.com.

For people whose machines don’t match Apple’s requirements there will be a lot of re-streaming the event on Ustream and Justin.tv using Flash.

The other workaround is to use Open Source Video Player VLC and enter Apple’s livestream URL in the streaming portion:

AppStore Crappy Apps Now Have A Place

Come on, lets face it: there are a lot of bad apps available in the App Store. Some would say crappy apps! Even with Apple’s strict app approval process, if a developer creates something stupid, it can still find its way into the App Store.

Now, there is a website that highlights the best of the worst apps available. Created by Josh Helfferich (who hosts the popular website, iPad Apps That Don’t Suck), Crapptastic “celebrates the hilarity that is the iTunes App Store.”

The site just debuted, so there isn’t much there. Still, with sites called “Horse Trailer World” and “Listen to the pig” already included, I can’t wait to see what is added soon!

Intel buys iPhone 3G chip supplier, Infineon

Intel will increase its presence in the mobile phone market with the announced $1.4 billion acquisition of the wireless division of Infineon, a significant component supplier for Apple’s iPhone.

Intel and Infineon announced that they had agreed to the deal, in which Intel will own the wireless business of Germany’s Infineon Technologies in exchange for $1.4 billion in cash. The deal pertains to a range of wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi, 3G, WiMAX and LTE. Infineon makes the baseband chip found in the iPhone, and the company has had a strong partnership with Apple, supplying chipsets for Apple’s smartphone since it was first released in 2007.

Patent suit challenges motion-based input with Apple’s iPhone 4

A new lawsuit takes aim at the accelerometer- and gyroscope-powered abilities of Apple’s iPhone 4, alleging that the interactive, three-dimensional input methods are in violation of a U.S. patent. The lawsuit, filed this week by Triton Tech of Texas, names both Apple and Nintendo as defendants. Triton is the owner of U.S. Patent No. 5,181,181, entitled “Computer Apparatus Input Device for Three-Dimensional Information.”

That patent describes a handheld device that includes multiple accelerometers and angular rate sensors for detecting positioning and motion. By interpreting acceleration, velocity and relative position of the device, it can allow users to interact with a computer or other device with six degrees of motion in a three-dimensional space.

Triton’s lawsuit only specifically singles out the iPhone 4 from Apple as an infringing device, though it implies that other devices could be in violation. Apple’s iPod touch and iPad also include accelerometers that are used for input.

Apple’s Special Event – What Can We Expect?

Apple’s Special Event kicks off tomorrow, on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. This annual media event usually focuses on the iPod line, but recent rumors suggest that there might be other topics covered as well. Let’s see a brief summary of what we might expect tomorrow.

iPod Nano – a smaller, square design with a 3 cm x 3 cm touchscreen. Images of some of its cases have already leaked on the Internet from the manufacturers’ websites.
iPod Touch – a new device with a Retina display, a possible 3G, a microphone, backside and front-facing camera – and, of course, a new shape.

“Instant” Video from iTunes – Mistake or True?

A new Apple iTunes survey reveals quite interesting information – among other iPad features, it suggest the ability of “instantly” watching iTunes Store video – something that is not currently available.

At the moment watching videos on iPad requires the full file to download before the beginning of playback, and Apple TV also needs some buffering.

Although this could easily be miswording on the part of the survey stuff, the source is still Apple itself which gives some hope.

iPhone Input by Finger, Glove or Pen Possible

A new touch panel has been developed by Hitachi, which could make the use of iPhones much simpler, since it enables input by finger, glove or pen.

The new touch panel allows a variety of input means such as a multi-touch function for controlling the panel by using multiple fingers, a function to input small characters by using a synthetic-resin pen and a function to operate the panel while wearing gloves in a cold region.

The current iPhone and iPad models won’t allow input from insulating materials, which makes it difficult to operate for precise drawings with an ordinary stylus or in cold climates.

iPhone 4 Antenna Problem Solved?

Telcel, a Mexican mobile operator, claims that the iPhones 4 coming out in late September won’t have the infamous antenna problem anymore.

Until September 30, Telcel customers (as well as US users) can still get free iPhone 4 cases. Meanwhile, Apple have been working hard on solving the problem, trying to find a hardware solution that won’t hide the antenna but will either react differently with skin or coat the antenna.

Although still only a rumor, it’s an interesting and promising announcement.

Apple looking to hire iBookstore marketing manager

Apple has posted a new job listing looking for a marketing manager specifically for the iBookstore. The listing seeks an experienced business marketer “to drive awareness and sales of iBooks through co-marketing programs with publishers and authors, strategic partnerships, and via online and direct marketing tactics.” It seems like a lot of the position will be self-driven, as whoever’s chosen will be asked to come up with some interesting schemes to push iBook sales, both with publishers, and even across the other divisions of iTunes. But the bottom line is of course sales — Apple wants someone to push iBooks, specifically in the US.

Researchers create pixels eight times smaller than the Retina Display

Researchers at the University of Michigan have created a display with nanometer-thin sheets of metal (called nanoresonators) that use slits to create pixels eight times smaller than the pixels currently on the iPhone 4. To show off their work, the University of Michigan researchers created their school’s logo on a display only 9 microns tall (a strand of human hair is about 100 microns wide).

Crazy. You have to wonder what an iPhone-sized display would look like with a resolution like that (or if we’d even tell the difference, given that our eyes have a limit on the amount of detail they can discern). Obviously, such display would probably cost a lot more than the iPhone 4 actually does.

Apple to Double iTunes Preview Song Lengths?

iTunes users will be able to sample a minute of a song before purchasing. Currently, iTunes song samples are limited to 30 seconds.

The report said that the addition of more sample time is one of a number of expected changes to iTunes, aimed at helping users discover music. It is rumored that Apple will spend “a large part” of its 1st September special event detailing how the new iTunes improves the user experience. But Apple is not expected to introduce a cloud-based iTunes service, which would allow users to stream music to devices such as the iPhone.

Owner of location-based advertising patent targets Apple’s iAds

Apple and its iAds mobile advertising service are the target of a new lawsuit from a company that owns a patent related to location-based ads. Apple was named in the lawsuit from StreetSpace, along with Quattro Wireless, which is now being phased out in favor of iAds. Other defendants include Google, AdMob, Nokia, Navteq, Millenial Media and Jumptap.

StreetSpace is the creator of a remote Internet terminal the Web Station. Users can walk up to one of these terminals to access the Internet, and are delivered targeted advertisements in the process. The suit alleges that iAds service, launched on July 1, is in violation of StreetSpace patent because it delivers personalized advertisements based on a user’s location, profile and usage history.

Related to that invention is U.S. Patent No. 6,847,969, which StreetSpace has alleged Apple is in violation of. Named “Method and System for Providing Personalized Online Services and Advertisements in Public Spaces,” it was granted on Jan. 25, 2005.

Unreal Photos with iPhone!

The two pictures of airplane propellers seem absolutely unreal. Yet, it is no Photoshop – just the iPhone and its Rolling Shutter Effect.

The photos were made by Soren Ragsdale and Jason Mullins, and they represent the iPhone’s way of image acquisition.

An iPhone’s CMOS camera has no shutter, and reads the pixel values off in rows rather than all at once. In this photo the propeller spins about 5 times while the photo is taken, producing a strange effect.

So, to put it simply, most digital cameras don’t take the picture the very moment you press the button, but rather scan vertically or horizontally over the frame. Hence, the whole image is recorded over a period of time and the name “rolling shutter” appears.

Although the shutter is usually fast enough for most pictures, it creates an interesting effect with an object that moves even faster than the shutter itself. Looks really cool!

New Leaked Images of iPod Nano Cases

Apple’s Special Event is just 2 days away, and fresh iPod rumors appear each day. Late last week there was a leak of information about a smaller iPod nano. Now there are more images from Asian websites showing screen protectors and additional cases, supposedly for a next-generation iPod nano as well.

One of the images is detailed enough, so we can try to establish some of the main features of the forthcoming device. In the edge of case there is a long slot that is certainly meant for Apple’s dock-connector, expected in the new iPod nano. The opposite edge is occupied by an elongated hole – most probably the slot for the on/off buton or the hold switch, like we can see on the already-existing iPod models.

It’s more difficult to guess the purpose of the other three slots that we can see in the case, but it’s possible that the one next to the dock connector is meant for headphones. The other two holes could be intended for volume buttons, like the ones on the iPhone 4, although this is still only speculations.

All the cases have either an open slot on the back of the case or even a fully open back, which are expected to accommodate a clip, like we can see on earlier iPod shuffle models.

Who knew that credit card processing would be the new hotness for smartphones? The Square mobile payment system has been making waves by letting small businesses receive credit card payment directly on their smartphones. Now, mophie and Intuit are looking to get in on the same action with their Complete Card Solution for iPhone. It’s a $179 package that includes both mophie’s card-swiping phone case and the 3.0 version of Intuit’s GoPayment app. After a quick application users are said to be approved (or, erm, declined) within 15 minutes and can immediately start accepting payments.

A single account can also cover up to 50 users, meaning an entire sales team could be equipped with these devices. But this case, which encrypts every credit card number before it gets to the phone, will only work with the iPhone 3G/S.

Concept: Magic iRemote for iOS Apple TV/iTV

Dan Wineman’s concept, above, for an iOS-powered Apple TV/iTV remote that’s essentially an iPod touch without the screen, is interesting. Same accelerometer/gyro, same multitouch, same home button.

Such remote is gesture-based. Tap to pause, swipe left to rewind, swipe right to fast-forward. Slide up or down to adjust volume. Home key to exit to the menu, which you navigate by flicking and tapping.

John Gruber still isn’t sure if any intermediated device could work (though given you’ll be sitting 10 feet away, one certainly will have to). But the idea is pretty interesting. And if Apple does go for something like this, however, you just know they’d call it Magic iRemote.

2.8-inch iPod touch for $99!

According to iLounge, at this week’s event Apple is planning to unveil its new 2.8-inch iPod touch sporting the same resolution as latest versions of the device. It is said that the current Nano’s screen is a bit smaller, only 2.4 inches. At the same time it is running on the same processor (although it has less RAM).

The idea is pretty good, because it will help fill the gap between your Nano and Shuffle devices.

Both iPad Wi-Fi + 3G and iPad Wi-Fi can now be shipped in 24 hours, as is listed at Apple’s online store. And it concerns not just the US but also international stores in the UK and Canada.

Ever since its launch, the supplies of Apple’s new device, proclaimed “magical and revolutionary”, have been very low. This lead to delays in rollouts and rumors said that the reason was the IPS panels which just couldn’t be produced fast enough for the demand.

Either the demand slowed, or the production finally rose. We’ll find that out with the next quarter’s results.

250,000 applications at App Store

2 years and 49 days after it was opened, the US App Store has passed the milestone of 250,000 applications. According to the chart, the largest categories are Books, with 17% of all applications; Games with 14% and Entertainment with 11%.

Recently Royal Pingdom determined that 70% of all App Store applications are paid. At the same time, 64% of the Android Marketplace are free.

These statistics are likely to be discussed further on September 1^st at Apple’s Special Event.

China Unicom Advertises Jailbreaking and Provides Free Cases with Purchase

Microsoft Co-Founder Sues 11 companies, including Apple

Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft and owner of a patent licensing company Interval Licensing, has filed a suit against 11 companies, including Apple, over several patents related to Web search technologies and e-commerce.

Mr. Allen, 57, Friday through his firm Interval Licensing LLC filed suit in federal court in Seattle asserting the companies are using technology from his laboratory. Named in the suit, along with Apple and Google, are AOL Inc., eBay Inc., Facebook Inc., Netflix Inc., Office Depot Inc., OfficeMax Inc., Staples Inc., Yahoo Inc. and Google’s YouTube subsidiary.
The suit doesn’t name Microsoft, Amazon.com Inc. or other technology firms in Seattle where Mr. Allen is based. The suit doesn’t estimate a damage amount.

There are 4 separate patents involved in the claim and they cover essential parts of the companies’ business. For instance, one of the patents allows showing related articles on the same page while another allows the website to suggest similar things to the ones that people are viewing at the moment. Seems like Mr. Allen’s patents are vast indeed!

Interval Licensing claim that they are just trying to protect their investments in innovation. This lawsuit marks yet another step in Allen’s all the more aggressive efforts to protect his intellectual property.

Paul Allen is one of the world’s richest people with more than $13 billion. He recently promised to give over half of his fortune to charity after he was called upon to do so by Bill Gates.

The image has given rise to much speculation in the Internet community, and now there are rumors that Apple is going to be releasing new Apple TV with rental services, new iPods and many other devices.

Apple’s iPad Perfect for Sumo Wrestlers

The Japan Sumo Association has carried out their decision to hand out 60 iPads to 51 wrestling club in the country. The idea was to improve communication between the wrestlers themselves and the sports body. The Association decided that the wrestlers’ fingers weren’t small enough for ordinary mobile phones and that iPads might help them not to miss the information sent by fax or phone – something that had often happened before.

However, first of all the Association’s princely gesture was aimed at making amends after some scandals that involved gangsters, match-fixing and illegal gambling. Sumo came under harsh criticism for the lack of investigation and control, which was partly due to poor communication.

New Shape for iPod Touch 4G?

The iPod touch 4G is most probably going to change its shape. The back of the device will be neither flat glass, like for the iPhone 4, nor is it going to be a curved surface, like a dome.

Familiar. Think of the top of a MacBook Pro, only smaller, which is to say flat rather than curved at the center—closer to the look of the first-generation iPod touch’s back, only with modifications. The rear camera is there, but there is still some question as to whether what’s next to it will be a LED flash like the one in the iPhone 4, or a microphone like the one next to the video camera of the iPod nano. We’ve been told to expect a microphone rather than a flash, with a continuation of the bottom-mounted headphone port and Dock Connector port.

The new iPod touch is going to be announced at the Special Event on September 1^st.
