Retina-displays Will Add Up To 100$ To MacBook Pro Costs

According to CNET’s report, "Retina" or "HiDPI" displays widely rumored to be used in MacBook Pro models are now available in the supply chain and they costs up to 100$ more than existing non-Retina displays.

Senior Analyst in DisplaySearch Richard Shim said that a 15.4-inch Retina display with 2880x1800 resolution and 220 ppi density currently costs about $160, compared to the 68$ Apple spends on displays in current 15-inch MacBook Pro models.

A Retina display for the smaller 13-inch MacBook Pro at 2560x1600 resolution costs $134 compared to the 69$ the company pays for current models. The cost of the 3840x2400 display for 17-inch MacBook Pro is not mentioned, but it will certainly carry an even higher premium over the display in current models.

However it is unclear whether the 17-inch model will receive the same upgrades as smaller MacBook Pro models at Worldwide Developers Conference, as most of the rumors so far have indicated that only 13-inch and 15-inch models are in production. Moreover, Apple has been rumored to not shifting the whole MacBook Pro line to MacBook Air form factor at once, instead introducing 17-inch model several months after the release of the 15-inch model.

Shim notes that Apple is the most likely candidate for purchasing these screens in the supply chain, but he has been unable to determine what company or companies are buying them for their computers.

Also it remains unclear how Apple will handle the increased costs for storage as the company reportedly plans to replace traditional hard drives with solid-state drives in the upcoming MacBook Pros, although some cost savings will result from removing the optical drive. Such drives are already used in MacBook Air models, but MacBook Pro higher-end users will likely require higher-capacity drives at considerably higher costs.

Next MacBook Air Update to Focus on Retina Displays

9to5Mac has reported that Apple is indeed planning to bring Retina displays to the MacBook Air alongside the next-generation MacBook Pros and iMac family. Retina display will be the most significant change for the next-generation MacBook Airs line.

Apple’s new MacBook Air will not see major changes across the entire computer like the next-generation MacBook Pro, but this update will truly be all about the Retina Display. [...]

Apple is preparing both new 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch models. These new Airs lack notable design changes, but feature fast and power-efficient Ivy Bridge processors and improved graphics engines to support the Retina Display, according to supply chain sources. The new Airs will also use improved Apple internal battery technology in order to support the battery life required by high-pixel-density screens such as the Retina Display, according to sources familiar with prototype versions of the super-thin notebook’s internal components.

9to5Mac’s source suggests that the updated MacBook Air is unlikely to appear in the nearest months. Apple is still puzzled by the Retina display's power requirements within the MacBook Air's thin form factor.

Mockup: What a Tall 'iPhone 5' with 4-Inch Display Looks Like

Earlier this month, iLounge reported that Apple indeed plans to launch the next-generation iPhone with a 4-inch display. The company could increase the height of the screen not changing its width. The report also included the measurements of the rumoured device that allow Ciccarese Design to produce some higher quality mockups of what such a device might look like

As had been proposed in earlier speculation, a taller display could allow Apple to add one more row of icons to the iPhone's home screen, moving to five rows per page plus the row of pinned icons in the dock at the bottom of the screen.

Increasing the diagonal measurement of the iPhone display from 3.5 inches to 4 inches while maintaining the same width as the current display adds approximately 11 mm (0.45 inch) to the height of the display. With iLounge's report indicating that the new iPhone's body will measure in at approximately 125 mm, which is 10 mm taller than the iPhone 4S, the spacing for the components above and below the display would remain roughly the same.

The mockup also shows a smaller dock connector and a flat metal panel in the central part of the rear case of the iPhone rumored by several sources.

The iPhone Dev-Team released RedSn0w 0.9.11b4 with support for the tethered jailbreak of A4 devices on iOS 5.1.1 - iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 4G.

Version 0.9.11b4 completes the tethered JB support for 5.1.1 on A4 devices and earlier, including proper "Stitching" and "Custom" creation of NO_BB IPSWs.

Pod2g untethered jailbreak will not working on iPhone 3GS and iPod 3G

Sadly pod2g has discovered that his untether does not work on the iPod 3G or iPhone 3GS, according to a recent tweet by the hacker.

Sad news. Just tested the untether on an iPod 3G. The kernel vulnerability don't happen on this one. I think iPhone 3Gs is out too.
the iOS version don't really matter. It's about the hardware.

This means these devices can only be tethered jailboken.

This will be disappointing news for many although it's possible a kernel vulnerability could yet be found for these older devices. For those wondering, pod2g reminds us that the old bootrom 3GS will be untethered jailbroken for life.

Aaron Sorkin Will Be Screenwriter For Steve Jobs biopic

Sony Pictures confirmed that Aaron Sorkin will be the screenwriter for the film adaptation of the Steve Jobs’ biography by Walter Isaacson. Last month Sorkin, who is well-known for his work on The Social Network, A Few Good Men and The West Wing, noted that he was “strongly considering” the offer to work on the project. Amy Pascal, Sony Pictures Co-Chairman, commented on the announcement:

“Steve Jobs’ story is unique: he was one of the most revolutionary and influential men not just of our time but of all time. There is no writer working in Hollywood today who is more capable of capturing such an extraordinary life for the screen than Aaron Sorkin; in his hands, we’re confident that the film will be everything that Jobs himself was: captivating, entertaining, and polarizing.”

Casting for the upcoming movie has yet to be determined; however rumors have suggested that Noah Wyle and George Clooney are likely candidates for the role of Steve Jobs

This film adaptation is a completely separate project from a film about Jobs where Aston Kutcher stars in the lead role. Last week Kutcher was seen wearing Jobs’ trademark outfit when going to the movie set, where filming is currently taking place.

Apple released iOS 5.1.1 (build number 9B206) for iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone. This is a small update with several bugfixes and small improvements. Here is the official list of changes:

Improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut.
Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks.
Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances.
Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List.
Fixes an issue where ‘Unable to purchase’ alert could be displayed after successful purchase.

Retina Displays Also Coming to Next-Generation iMac

Joanna Stern from ABC News claims that not only the MacBook Pro family but also the iMac line is set to gain ultra high-resolution "Retina" displays.

The laptop will see the introduction of the “Mac Retina Display,” which is said to have a very high resolution. ABC News has similarly heard from its own sources that both the next MacBook Pro and the iMac would be getting very, very high-resolution displays. Apple refreshed its new iPad with a Retina Display in March.

It seems natural that Apple wants to move all its displays to the retina standard. But, it’s unclear, how Apple will implement the increased resolution given that most Macs already approach Retina resolution at typical viewing distances.

Many have assumed that Apple will follow the model used in the iPhone and iPad, doubling the resolution in each dimension with a screen carrying four times the pixels of its predecessor. But as screen sizes get even larger, quadrupling the number of pixels starts to bump up against the hardware capabilities of graphics chips and display interface standards.
The 21.5-inch iMac would see a pixel count in the range of the 17-inch MacBook Pro as its 1920x1080 resolution would be bumped to 3840x2160, but the 27-inch iMac would move from its current resolution of 2560x1440 to a monster Retina display at 5120x2880. The same panel could also be used in a revised Apple Thunderbolt Display should hardware be able to support the resolution.

Apple, however, could increase display resolution by a smaller amount than seen on iOS devices. Moving to something in the range of 160-170 ppi, for example, could result in user interface elements becoming too small for users to click on with ease unless applications are specifically updated with new elements designed for that pixel density range.

Apple updates Apple TV to version 5.0.1 9B206f

Apple released the new iOS firmware 5.0.1 (9B206f) for both Apple TV 2G and latest Apple TV 3G. The software update is said to bring fixes to AirPlay, Netflix, Home Sharing, and more. New firmware also includes HD previews for movies and TV shows on the iTunes Store.

Apple changes name of "iPad WiFi + 4G" to "iPad WiFi + Cellular"

Following a string of complaints across the globe (especially in Australia and the United Kingdom) regarding Apple’s branding of the 4G-LTE compatible iPads, Apple has tweaked the name of their cellular-connecting iPad in some regions. The new name is simply “iPad WiFi + Cellular” and this is a shift from the former “iPad WiFi + 4G” branding. The source of the criticism of the 4G third-generation iPad models is the fact that the 4G LTE only functions in the U.S. and Canada, on a total of five carriers.

Apple did not simply make this iPad name change in the affected Australia and UK regions, but they changed it in the UK, Australia, the U.S., Canada, UAE, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, New Zealand, Malaysia, Ireland, and Hong Kong.

All first-generation iPad and iPad 2 models with 3G-data connections were referred to as “iPad WiFi + 3G,” and the 3G model of the 16GB iPad 2 that Apple still sells is still called “iPad 2 WiFi + 3G.”

Thinner 15-Inch MacBook Pro Coming with Retina Display and USB 3.0

Apple's much-rumored 15-inch MacBook Pro will reportedly receive a new design that will be considerably thinner than the existing MacBook Pro due to the removal of the optical drive.

While many have speculated that the new 15-inch MacBook Pro will pickup the design from the late-2010/mid-2011 MacBook Air, sources familiar with the prototype units say that this is untrue. Instead, the new 15-inch MacBook Pro is described as being an ultra-thin version of the current MacBook Pro. Basically, the prototype design is a thinner, yet more robust, version of the late-2008 design. It has no tapering like the MacBook Airs.

The casing of the forthcoming MacBook Pro includes ports for the MagSafe power connector, two USB ports, and audio in/out jacks, a battery level indicator along the left side. The right side offers a pair of Thunderbolt ports, another USB port, an SD card slot, and a Kensington lock slot. Apple also may remove Ethernet port entirely in order to achieve the thin design.

The report indicates that the USB ports on the new MacBook Pro will support USB 3.0. A fresh report from Digitimes also claims that Genesys Logic has won a contract to supply USB 3.0 chips for a forthcoming MacBook Air revision, and it seems likely that such compatibility would also be coming to the MacBook Pro.

A launch timeframe for the new MacBook Pro remains unknown.
