Tunnel and tether iPhone using USB on Mac

Tunneling and Tethering iPhone over USB has its own advantages. The first being Security. You don’t have to fear the less secure ad-hoc WiFi networks. The second is Battery charge conservation. Ad-Hoc WiFi based tethering methods (like PDANet) would drain your battery in no time. With USB tethering, your iPhone will get charged as it tethers!. For Windows users, there are many tools which helps tether over USB. But for Mac the following is the only one I could find. So Sharing:-

Download the iPhoneTunnel for Mac application

After launching click on the icon on the Mac super bar.

Select the “Turn Tunnel On”

Select Tools->Tethering

Enter the root/alpine credentials when asked for in the Terminal

Configure Firefox for Socks 5 Proxy by setting it’s values as 127.0.0.1 and port: 9999

Type about:config in Firefox and set the values network.proxy.socks_remote_dns = true

Restart Firefox

A Superb iPhone leather slip case

Nothing beats leather when it comes to protection with luxury. I bought this new leather slip case from a New Zealand vendor – Ikonic Edge.

I had only just a gut feeling when choosing between it and the Sena slip case. But this one turned out to be a superb case. The build quality is impeccable. I hear it is handmade. The leather is pretty thick and rich. The only issue I have is since the pouch is very new, its slightly tight fit (Just like a new shoe!). A hard pinch at the bottom is what pops the phone out of the case. I think this will become second nature with time. I would gladly recommend their super slim leather case to everyone.

Google app for iPhone - Review

The latest Google Mobile App available on the Appstore is a major update to the previous one. The major feature of this release is Voice Search. This option is not enabled by default. You can go to the settings screen of the app to enable and customize. Google has successfully coupled the Location based locale results with an individual’s voice search queries. Most of the time, the results are accurate.

To start the Voice Search, you just start the application and then hold the iPhone to your ear. Start speaking the search keyword(s), after you hear a beep sound. The results will appear next on the applications screen.

What is Good?

The Voice Search accuracy is almost acceptable. If you are a non-American, you have no luck!. But Google has promised other language/accent support. These would be server-side upgrades Google will be making independently and progressively.The voice search also works well for searching images, Wikipedia, News and Maps.

What is required?

The search results are not voice navigable further. It would be very nice to have Voice equivalents to the insanely useful Google Keyboard Shortcuts.

Apart from the Voice Search, Google Mobile App for iPhone also features custom domain support. If you have opted to host email/calendaring/document storage/instant communications with Google, accessing them on iPhone is really quick now. Google Mobile App gives you quick shortcuts to access them further on iPhone’s Mobile Safari. I especially liked the Google Talk Gadget performing well over an EDGE connection inside Safari. It would have been much better if Google opted to open these shortcuts within the application itself, instead of launching a separate Safari window.

Overall I am impressed with the app for now. I look forward to the further updates for a more integrated application – aggregating all of the Google Services.

Apple drops NDA for iPhone Developers

Finally Apple has sensed that too much restrictions put in place just hindered the adoption of mainstream iPhone development. Now Apple has dropped the NDA.

We have decided to drop the non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for released iPhone software.
We put the NDA in place because the iPhone OS includes many Apple inventions and innovations that we would like to protect, so that others don’t steal our work. It has happened before. While we have filed for hundreds of patents on iPhone technology, the NDA added yet another level of protection. We put it in place as one more way to help protect the iPhone from being ripped off by others.
However, the NDA has created too much of a burden on developers, authors and others interested in helping further the iPhone’s success, so we are dropping it for released software. Developers will receive a new agreement without an NDA covering released software within a week or so. Please note that unreleased software and features will remain under NDA until they are released.
Thanks to everyone who provided us constructive feedback on this matter.

This development should result in a flurry of iPhone related programming books and forums sprouting around. Happy iPhone coding!

Blocking Ads in iPhone Browser - Mobile Safari

You can block the ads in Mobile Safari using a special hosts file. For doing this you need a Jailbroken iPhone.

SSH in to the iPhone
Goto /etc/ folder
Copy and Replace the /etc/hosts file from this archive
Reboot the iPhone

For Jailbroken phones, use CopierciN by Karaduman – Available on Cydia now.

CopierciN is a text editor which makes it possible to exchange text between messages, emails, Notes and files.

You can import text from SMS, Notes, E-Mails and Regular files to create new Content. You can export the new content as a new SMS/Note/E-Mail/Regular File as well.

CopierciN is trying to solve the iPhone’s Copy and Paste problem by - gathering the textual information from all the default applications and providing a common place to work with. A worthwhile effort.

Time Machine for your iPhone - iBaReS

The iTunes backup of your iPhone is and endless procedure!. The one which takes hours at stretch sometimes. No more!. If you’ve got a jailbroken iPhone with SSH installed, a TimeMachine like incremental backup solution exists - iBaRes. You just have to supply your iPhone’s IP address and the root password (alpine). The first backup takes a while. But subsequent backups are a snap. If something were to go wrong on your iPhone or you don’t want to manually re-install the jailbroken apps eveytime a firmware update happens, iBaRes comes very handy.

This is an opensource software currently supporting only OSX. Enjoy the Wire-free syncs and backups!

AppleTalk for iPhone

Netatalk is a freely-available, kernel level implementation of the AppleTalk Protocol Suite, originally for BSD-derived systems. A *NIX/*BSD system running netatalk is capable of serving many macintosh clients simultaneously as an AppleTalk router, AppleShare file server (AFP), *NIX/*BSD print server, and for accessing AppleTalk printers via Printer Access Protocol (PAP). Included are a number of minor printing and debugging utilities.

Netatalk has been ported by Jay Freeman to iPhone platform. Once installed through Cydia, You can find the iPhone in the OS X Finder. You can “Connect as” - root/mobile ( default password: alpine).

Click on Connect and Viola!. You can easily transfer between your Mac and iPhone through the finder itself. Unfortunately AppleTalk protocol support has been discontinued by Microsoft on Windows Platforms.
