There was an insurgence of black metal in Des Moines a few years back however after listening I have to give them a poser stamp. How did we get here? 100 episodes. 100 times I have setup my laptop to record/edit a show usually the morning of the first broadcast. I remember thinking several times, "It's midnight and I have to leave for the airport by 3:30AM. I still have to record the show." IBT has never about making money, it has been about keeping this music alive. The only way to keep music alive is to keep forever circulating. Back in the day it was about trading tapes and CDrs, now its about sharing digital files and broadcasting these tunes as much as possible. There is no reason to keep this music around except to preserve Iowa's history in DIY and alternative culture and really that is enough.

I am all over the place tonight with tunes from every part of the state: Sioux City, Des Moines, Waterloo, Waverly, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Clinton, Keokuk, and Dubuque. I was presented with an email earlier in the week from Bensmasher sharing with me some really interesting finds. One of the most interesting is a group from Clinton called Mississippi Belle. Two boat captains who made a record using a keyboard a drum machine. I love this stuff.

To continue on with my travelogue shows I am now in West Point, NY. On the flight I got to finally explore some tunes by the band Nethervoid. Tim Connery whom I have worked with on film projects up in the Dubuque area used to be in this band with members of The Tanks (hence the double location mention). Nethervoid put out two albums, an EP, and a demo during their short lifespan. Now the majority of their music is some good ol' hail satan black metal, however they do have a cover of Bauhaus's "Mask" on their EP. But I chose the instrumental title song from their last album as my pick.

Happy Valentines Day! I hope you all enjoyed my note from Harry Warden at the beginning of the show. Tonight I popped in a few loves songs from Captain Three Leg, Elizabeth Moen, and well let's call the track from Three Finger Better Betty a love song too (it's probably not a love song for another a human). First time jams tonight from TV Cop out of Ottumwa. They are straight out of the pop punk scene and they remind me a lot of 90s Alkaline Trio or Offspring.

The Elizabeth Moen song "Best I Can Do" reminds me a lot of the music heard in the David Lynch film, Wild At Heart. I also got a song off of the second or third When Bitter Spring Sleeps record, Coven Of Wolves. The nature sounds you hear on the track were recorded at Wapsipinicon River Environmental Education Center which is over on the Scott County side of Iowa.

Christmas is next week and I am chilling in the basement of Dylan Sires' Dad's house in Waterloo, Iowa. I bet no one saw that coming. Dylan is upstairs, I asked if he wanted to join me tonight for the show and he politely declined. I play a lot of chill music with a dash of noise with metal for dessert.
Winter is a weird time for music. I hate going to shows because it's too cold and there is nothing worse than being a little tipsy when it is below freezing. However, I do love warm ambient music during this time of year. I remember being in high school and jamming Sigur Ros - ( ) during winter break when the snow covered the streets and Christmas lights illuminated my basement bedroom in my mom's house in Ely, Iowa. So for the next few weeks, I am going to be picking out lots of "warm" music. Please note: the no wave music I have chosen does not fall in this category.

He talks about passing the guard and gets candid about the early days with William Elliot Whitmore. Tonight I played part one of my interview with former Cedar Rapids native Adam Groves. He played bass and sang in the PeePee's, Wheel and the Fence, and Brazil. He is also the artist behind one of my favorite musical acts, Deerslayer. He currently resides in Singapore so when I recorded him it was 11AM CST but it was 11PM Singapore time. The quality is a little rough at times as I was capturing it from my iphone. I did my best to clean it up but there is a lot of background noise. He talks about the Cedar Rapids music scene from 1996 through 2006. Lots of incite from his days with The PeePees, Brazil, and of course Deerslayer.

This week I am in the KFMG studios with studio manger Gary Monte interviewing filmmaker Jack Meggers about his life in Mason City during the grunge era of the 90s. We play his band Ming's Daughter as well as fellow northern Iowa bands Todd's Neat Futons and Sorry Excuse. Jack left Iowa for fifteen years and returned in 2014 where he was reintroduced to Iowa's music scene. He brings on a handful of tracks that have inspired in creatively since returning to the state.

Happy Thanksgiving! If you are one of our listeners from KCOE in Cedar Rapids, we have a ton of tunes from your neck of the woods. Digging through the crates we got an old demo from ol' Will Whitmore of his tune "Gravel Road". This was ripped directly from the cassette that was mailed to Brad Adita for the Another Day In The Air compilations. I also got new newer tunes from Peanut Ricky, Huxley Maxwell, and Waverly. This playlist was crafted for those who are chilling in their food coma and just want everyone to leave them alone. Jack Meggers will be joining me next week to discuss Mason City's once-thriving alternative music scene.

Dude, October is coming to an end! I hope everyone has been enjoying the Halloween season to the fullest potential. Tonight was our last show for October. The next time you hear my voice it will be November. I can't say much will change around here. I will still be playing the best in the heartland's alternative music but Iowa Basement Tapes is in the process of syndicating to other stations across the state of Iowa. It has been something that has always been in the works and I hope more music is discovered along the way.

We are halfway through October and I am in the mood for blues. My buddy Buffalo Bonker brought me a pile of Iowa blues tunes and I'm going to dig into them with Scarlet Runner from Gilbertville and The Graveyard Blues Band from Cedar Rapids (there is also rad avant-garde jazz band from Lansing, MI called Graveyards that everyone should check out). I also met a stone mason who talked to me about the Iowa metal and punk scene of the 80s. He talked a lot about Voodoo Gearshift which made me finally want to check them out. I also got Sioux City Pete with a song from Necro Blues (I had to omit the title).

Tonight I got stuck on a surf kick. The Afterdarks, Person Whale, and Steve Reverb & The Sound Tones all in the first 20 minutes. Person Whale has made its way into my heart. I love how sloppy the sound quality is and I wish more musicians would cut themselves some slack and let things sound a little more organic once and awhile. After much talk about my buddy Bensmasher (curator of 319dude.bandcamp.com), I finally got one of his recordings into the mix. Before I ever met Ben in person, we chatted on AOL Instant Messanger. He told me he had a "hippy industrial" project called Harm. When we met in person at Relics Records he gave me a copy. This was around 2003 and I wish to this day that he had recorded more material. At one point I had a remixed version of "Ten Red Months" that was more guitar-based vs the long ambient version that is on the album. When he first shared with me the 319 Dude Bandcamp archive, I asked him why Harm was not included and he told me "No one really knew I did this."

October is finally here! If you have been listening to the show for a while, you know that I drop a lot of samples from movies at the beginning of episodes. Most of them come from horror films like Return of the Living Dead, Trick Or Treat (the one with Gene Simmons), and whatever else one might be sitting in my office when I am working on the show. Horrors movies always seemed to go hand in hand with punk rock and metal for me.
Anyways tonight I dug out a tape from this super obscure artist named Sky Carrasco. I purchased her cassette, Dark Pines, several years ago from Record Collector in Iowa City. Her music is made up of violin, ukulele, and drums. I highly recommend checking it out. On the heavy side of things, I got some CR Dicks, X-Ray Mary, and an old-school punk jack from Mister Clean. I want to also point out the last track on tonight's playlist was the closest thing I have to hair metal. Geardown from Humboldt, IA plays a medley of hair metal tracks into one epic ballad.
