High school wrestling fans jammed Wells Fargo Arena Friday night for the state tournament finals in all three classes. The event was sold out for the 24th consecutive year.

See every match result here.

The Class 3-A team title drama went down to the final match, when Cody Krumwiede posted a 10-0 major decision victory that sent Waverly-Shell Rock past Iowa City West.

Waverly-Shell Rock, which has now won four consecutive championships, finished with 152 points to West’s 150. Bettendorf was third at 148.

Two of the three team titles were decided during the afternoon’s consolations — Logan-Magnolia in Class 1-A and Davenport Assumption in Class 2-A.

Photos from today’s consolations here.

Here were some of the highlights that transpired during Friday night’s finals:

— Jordan Bremer of Woodbury Central repeated as 103-pound champion in Class 1-A.

— Dylan Peters of Denver-Tripoli won the Class 2-A title at 112 pounds. He won the 103 title last year.

— Cory Clark of Southeast Polk is now 3-for-3 when it comes to winning state titles. He improved his record to 129-0, with a 5-2 victory against Kegan Wakefield of Iowa City West.

— Alburnett’s Tyler Shulista claimed the Class 1-A title at 119 pounds with a pin in 1:07. The junior won at 112 last year.

— Christopher Halblom, a senior from Alburnett, became a three-time champion, capturing the title at 125 pounds in Class 1-A.

— John Meeks of Des Moines Roosevelt joined Cory Clark as a 3-for-3 state champion. Meeks improved his career record to 123-0 with a 9-4 victory against Kegan Wakefield of Iowa City West.

— Brandon Sorensen of Denver-Tripoli won the 130-pound title in Class 1-A. He was the champ at 119 in 2010.

— Jake Marlin of Creston/Orient-Macksburg added this year’s 135-pound championship to the one he won last year at 130.

— Brian Warren became third wrestler in Des Moines North history to win a state title, prevailing in 140 pounds in Class 3-A. The other North champs: Jack Welch in 1970 and Robert Cole in 1996. North has a shared program with Hoover.

— Robert Walker of Martensdale-St. Marys repeated as the champion at 140 in Class 1-A.

— Cody Caldwell of Waverly-Shell Rock finished his traditional tournament career with a third state title, taking the top prize at 152 pounds.

— Ballard of Huxley Tanner Weatherman won his third career title with a convincing victory at 171 in Class 3-A. He was a four-time finalist.

— Kane Seeley became Perry’s first state champion since 1971, winning at 215 pounds in Class 2-A.

Be sure to check out complete coverage in the Des Moines Sunday Register. Mike Malloy, John Naughton and Chuck Schoffner covered the night’s action.

The evening began with five men being inducted into the Iowa high school wrestling hall of fame. They are Kenneth Meacham (Mason City), Brad Smith (Iowa City High), Mike Land (West Des Moines Valley), Mark Reiland (Eagle Grove and Iowa City West) and Jessie Sundell (Ogden).

Blythe beat Creighton Fox of Central of DeWitt in 2:31, rolling his opponent over during the second period.

“I just wanted to get it over with,” said Blythe, who will play football at Iowa. “I knew I could turn him.”

He beat Osage’s Joe Roll in 3:07 in Thursday’s quarterfinal, a day after topping Tyler Walls of Clear Creek-Amana of Tiffin in 59 seconds.

Father of Linn-Mar wrestler Joel Northrup says of default to Herkelman: 'We spent a couple of days agonizing over this.'

The father of Linn-Mar wrestler Joel Northrup said the choice not to wrestle Cassy Herkelman at the Iowa High School State wrestling tournament today was a family decision — and an “agonizing” one, at that.

“We spent a couple of days agonizing over this,” Jamie Northrup told The Register this afternoon when asked about his son, who defaulted his first-round match at 112 in Class 3-A rather than wrestler Herkelman. “And just giving to Joel to really allow him to make the decision.”

Instead of wrestling Herkelman, the younger Northrup — a sophomore who took a 35-4 record into state and was considered one of the top contenders in his weight class — left the mat and issued the following statement to the press:

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for [Cassy] and [Ottumwa's Megan Black, the other state qualifier] and their accomplishments. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times. As a matter of conscience and my faith, I do not believe that is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other High School sports in Iowa.”

With Joel defaulting, Herkelman, who was chronologically the first girl wrestler to qualify for state since it’s been sanctioned by the Iowa High School Athletic Association, therefore became the first girl to have her arm raised at state — which took place at approximately 9:12 a.m.

Joel’s father is a youth pastor at Believers In Faith Church, a non-denominational church in Marion, as well as a volunteer chaplain with the United States Army.

“Joel made the decision that he felt was the right decision,” Jamie Northrup continued. “And it aligned with his beliefs and his values and conscience.”

CLASS-BY-CLASS BREAKDOWN

Another tough draw as Swope is ranked second, Johnson third.

CLASS 1-A

At the risk of adding to the information overload (state pairings, district results, dual team districts in Class 3-A) released today, here’s a few more notes from Saturday’s district wrestling meets.

* All 42 top-ranked wrestlers won their district championship. That should make for a strong field next week.

* Twenty state champions from 2010 earned their way back to the state meet.

* Brick Imerman of Guthrie Center has 51 wins – most in the field of 672.

* Here’s the schools with the most qualifiers by class:

1-A: Logan-Magnolia 10, Don Bosco 6, Manson-NW Webster 6

2-A: Davenport Assumption 12, Ballard 9, Atlantic 8

3-A: Bettendorf 13, Waverly-Shell Rock 12, Iowa City West 11, Southeast Polk 11, West Des Moines Valley 10

* Sixty-eight freshman made it to state.

* Twenty-eight wrestlers enter the traditional state meet undefeated: 11 in Class 1-A, 12 in Class 2-A, and five in Class 3-A. Here’s the list:

Looking back through my files after a very busy and crazy couple of months, I came across this photo. Members of the Don Bosco wrestling team were celebrating after winning the Class 1A 2010 team championship at Wells Fargo on Saturday night, Feb. 20th. Wrestlers were taking turns kissing the state team trophy, and they had great reason to celebrate. They had easily claimed the state title on Friday night, and ended up 119 points to second place Eddyville – Blakesburg’s 70.5 points. But they had accomplished something no other school or program could claim. Don Bosco head coach Tom Kettman was the first coach to guide a team to five straight team championships. Waterloo West, from 1942 – 46 won five in a row, but under two different coaches. And Tom Kettman had the added pleasure that his son Taylor won a state title at 189 pounds. Anyone familiar with wrestling in the state of Iowa knows the history of Don Bosco’s storied past, and this added to that history.

The brutal series of winter storms tipped off with the boys’ basketball postseason today. A handful of today’s district games have been postponed.

It’s a disappointing start since many teams have scrambled their schedules all season to cope with Mother Nature.

DOT and local road crews deserve all-state honors. They’ve kept the roads passable under trying circumstances.

Please, if you’re traveling to basketball, bowling or swimming — or the state wrestling tournament, which starts Wednesday — please check the weather and roads reports. It’s much better to allow plenty of time and arrive safely than ending up in a ditch.

I traveled to Sioux City several weeks ago to interview some basketball players and counted about 80 cars stranded and stuck. Some were flip-flopped on their roofs.

I put a shovel and a bag of sand in my car every winter. Both have come in handy several times. I suggest you do the same, if you haven’t already, along with bottled water, a blanket or sleeping bag, emergency food and first aid supplies. (Part of that is the former Boy Scout in me.)

Watching a son or daughter compete is a wonderful thing. But let’s take it easy on the highways. No athlete should have to worry about a family member or friend’s safety during tournament time.

For postponement information, check the High School Insider. Here’s a list of today’s postponements:
