Safe Schools: children can no longer wait ft Yomi Sode , Dynamo & Laura Carmichael

This new film features actor Laura Carmichael and Magician Dynamo delivering a poem, written by artist Yomi 'GREEdS' Sode' using the voices of young people around the world to send a powerful message that children trapped in conflicts and natural disasters need safe schools. Act now to protect the most vulnerable children in the world by signing the Safe School petition at aworldatschool.org/safeschools The film, has been released as part of Theirworld’s Safe Schools campaign a week ahead of the first ever World Humanitarian Summit. The campaign calls on world leaders attending the summit to immediately launch a new fund that ensures children return to school quickly in the aftermath of an emergency. In 2015, humanitarian emergencies and crisis affected the education of more than 75 million children and young people. Children that are out of school are being trapped into child labour, early marriage and other forms of exploitation. Yet, last year, less than 2% of humanitarian aid went to get children back into school. The film was by Upshot Entertainment. The BBC’s music station 1Xtra has been broadcasting a special season called ‘Words First’, celebrating the growing art form of #SpokenWord - that’s performance poetry that can be delivered in a variety of styles. As part of this season, Focus on Africa has commissioned three poets from the African diaspora in the UK to write exclusive poetry on the theme of #migration. All three were allowed to interpret it in whatever way they wished. In the first poem of our series, Yomi Sode, a London-based Nigerian born writer explores what it means to be a Nigerian living in the UK. The poem is called Johnny Just Come. And, just a warning, the author uses a word that some may find offensive.

The July showing of COAT at reply done well. I had a terrible cold that evening however, I did not allow that to dampen my mood.

Brilliant news though. Following on from The Re:Play Programme. COAT has been booked for a lengthier showing at the Southbank Centre as part of their Africa Utopia festival! YES YES ANDDDDD YESSSSS!!

Very exciting day! Really enjoyed working with Butter Gun today. The brief was simple, to write to the theme of 'Searching' and it has to be One Minute! The coolest part of this was wearing this contraption called a Snorricam. It felt so weird, heavy and tight! but it was sick! Can't wait to see the end result. x

Morning! Ok pretty frikking nervous. I've been working on this specific scratch for 5 months! Re-drafted it stupid amount of times, stressed over it even up till yesterday but Today, we present what we have been working on to the mentors for feedback. It's not so much wish me luck, it's more I hope it makes sense? Hands down, the hardest written project I've worked on so far, simply because of the learning involved, the techniques that compliments a One Man Show etc #RePlay

So glad I got to watch Eclipsed. This play was deeply moving. I wasn't prepared at all for what I was going to experience. There were some parts that was hard for me to watch as a man, scenes so simple, yet effective. Yes. To everyone involved, job well done. Hold tight my play buddy Malika Booker. We felt like having a drink afterwards lol. Settled for chips and conversation instead.

Had the pleasure of facilitating a group of young & elderly people for a project called Dear Me. The purpose of the project? Quite simple, you write a story to your future self. This could be a year from now, or 50 years from now. I loved every part of the project. It felt good to talk to the young people and explore a different approach to letter writing however, working with the elderly folks was equally rewarding. Rather than writing to the future, they wrote to their younger selves. They looked at the choices they made, and whether they could have advised their younger selves any different. We had laughter, tears, questions but most importantly - we have letters!

A Day In Leicester

Spent the day in Leicester with John Berkavitch and his crew as they worked on his next One Man Show 'Wrong'.

The day went way faster than I would have imagined. While I'm in this whole process of writing lengthier work, it was definitely worth all of my time seeing how people work, how they gel and become one. There was this magical moment where Berko had lines to learn and literally left the crew to work on their part while he went to learn his lines. Everybody knew what they had to do.

Leicester was beautiful. I was welcomed into Berko's mum's home. I've decided that if I ever visited Leicester again, I'm renting a room at Berko's mum's house! Its absolutely amazing, and a beautiful space to write & reflect.
