The Great Azkals Experience

I admit I'm no soccer fan and I haven't watched such a game before July 3. But I definitely enjoyed it despite being in the bleachers and having to endure the pelting rain when the game commenced.

Thank God I believed PAG-ASA that there would be rainshowers and thunderstorms so my friends and I had raincoats - and maybe we were the only ones who were ready for the rain - since umbrellas were not allowed.

Professional cameras (DSLRs) were also prohibited so I didn't bring my trusty compact because I was afraid the guards would mistake it for an SLR. Yet we noticed some people who were able to smuggle in their SLRs; security was not as strict as we expected after all. So please bear with pictures and videos taken from my mobile phone.

The supportive Filipino audience helped boost the Azkals' morale I bet. My friend Almah's shriek may have startled Sri Lanka's goalkeeper. :D

The whole experience in the bleachers was worth the price and the rain so I hope I get another chance to do this all over again. Here's a clip of the running Philippine flag...

Sorry I got excited when I saw Phil Younghusband, thus the clumsy hand. Haha.

Next game is Azkals vs Kuwait. Second leg will still be held at Rizal Stadium on July 28. That's a Thursday and kick-off is at 7PM so it's a pity that I may not be able to watch this. For you who can be available at the said date and time, be sure to get your tickets at Ticketworld so you wouldn't have to buy them outside the gates of La Salle at more than half the price. ;)

Super 8: An Alien Passing By Town

I have been deceived by hearsayings that the title pertains to a giant 8-legged alien and so I thought I would be watching a sci-fi movie. Yes, of course, there was the giant alien - I wasn't able to count its legs though - who robbed electric/electronic stuff and kidnapped people. (Still I don't understand where the lost dogs come in the alien's path. Enlighten me please.)

But I believe the film isn't about the alien at all. He may have just crossed over from another movie, which might be District 9.

The film is about the journey of being a teenage kid, preferably in the 80s. Since I was born in the 80s, I was able to relate to the setting and missed the time when you don't have the convenience of fast communication (cellphones and internet) therefore you really need to come over your friend's house and hang out and do whatever you want, which in this case is making a zombie film. Hence the title pertaining to filming a super 8 movie.

I loved the teenage characters because they were just how normal teenagers are in such circumstances (even for an alien attack I presume). There's nothing extraordinary in them which makes them believable and endearing. The combination of the ordinary kids and the humongous extraterrestrial made the story more refreshing because there has been a lot of sci-fi adventures with grown-ups as protagonists. (This makes me recall ET directed by Super 8's producer, Steven Spielberg.) It was beautiful to see a bunch of teenagers running for their lives on what seems like a battlefield. Because of the stark contrast it created, not that I'm sadistic.

There's also a lot going on with relationships regarding families, friendships, the whole community, and a budding romance to boot. My favorite scenes were both from Joe and his father – first when they had a fight and the father, being the deputy, had to go back to the 12000 people who need his help, leaving his confused son alone; and secondly, when Joe let go of his mother's necklace after he got reunited with his father, symbolizing their acceptance and forgiveness for what happened.

As a sci-fi adventure I would barely give this two stars, but as a family movie it deserves its Rotten Tomatoes' rating and I would give it a 3.5.

Watch it and enjoy reliving a lost childhood. And don't forget the zombies in the closing credits. :)

I'm typing this post using my iTouch (and my neighbor's generous wifi) only thru Safari so it would be a great help if you can point me to a real Blogger app for my device. I don't understand why there's a Google mobile app and yet there's none for Blogger. Why, Tumblr has one for a long time now.

Or is there one available for Android devices, ei?

I had a Facebook account even before the craze (and advertising) but I wasn't using it often just like my Friendster account because I got bored with all the social networking sites' activities.

But when my friend asked me to accept his invite for Mafia Wars, that was the start of my addiction. Facebook really has the UI, games, interaction that most people will get hook into. It even made me stop blogging, ei? Hehehe. (Plus the fact that I don't have the free access to blog anymore because of work.)

What games do you play in FB? I do Mafia Wars, then Pet Society and Farm Town on the side. I also recently found Bloodlines good though my first love would still be MW. :D

Angels and Demons, Still Better Than Da Vinci Code

I've read both books of Dan Brown and I liked the first Robert Langdon novel than the more controversial one because of the twisted twists. So maybe it's not a surprise that I liked its movie version as well compared to The Da Vinci Code movie.

Though the non-Brown fan would assume that Angels and Demons is the sequel of The Da Vinci Code especially with the movie pointing to a previous adventure of the professor, it's actually the opposite. Angels and Demons is the prequel though there's no problem with the events overlapping or interchanging since the two plots weren't connected with each other.

As for the movie elements, I nitpick on editing and I hate it when I see ugly cuts in the film. It makes the film cheap at times and I thought they could've made this low-budgeted since they know many will still see the movie just because of the title. True.

Book-wise, of course we know that the movie would alter scenes. Since it's been years since I read the novel, I don't recall exact parts of the plot that weren't played except for the the "Air" cardinal. He was located not at the stairs but at a bench. And of course, who wouldn't miss the greatest twist in the story? The carmelengo is the biological son of the late pope. Still I understand the gravity of that concept so we'll forgive them for that. I assume that we're blessed that the movie wasn't totally banned from filming.

Despite that great bit of twist that was left behind and the disappointment of not seeing Anne Hathaway as Vittoria (from past rumors), I can still say that Angels and Demons is a great film and we can give most of the credit to the novel of course. But I thank the screenwriters in putting a better film in Angels and Demons than the disappointing Da Vinci Code (maybe because of the greater scandal there).

If you haven't read the book, you may find this movie a little bit boring at first especially on tiring details combined with a little drag of comedy from Tom Hanks. (Still I think Hanks is perfect as Langdon.) But the story, particularly the climax that tries to lengthen and form as it goes, will surprise you as what I experienced when I finished reading the book years ago.

As one of my favorite books, Angels and Demons' message wasn't lost in the movie despite the obvious bending to religion instead of academe. The movie was worth the watch despite knowing the ending... the graphic visuals of torture are enough. (Though I think they were minimized for the audience. Or maybe I just had a darker imagination. Hehe.)

WTF Manny Pacquiao won TKO over Ricky Hatton on Round 2!

I wasn't even able to watch clearly because of my net buffering. Hell.

Didn't see Hatton's defeat this early in the fight. Pacquiao really nailed his pound-for-pound title now, no doubts about it. Freddie Roach and Michael Murrer did a good job for training here. Congrats to Team Pacquiao, congrats to the Filipinos. Yeah!

So who's next? Mayweather Jr.?

am not an atheist but don't put too much faith on religion. Better to have faith in God, myself and my fellowman.

Am in love with words - the delectable picking of the right one to use in a phrase, a sentence, a paragraph (a stanza, i miss my poetry); the sweet melding of thought into substance; the mere greatness of expression.

stopped looking for answers to everything. It's easier to ask than to accept. But then sometimes you need to ask in order to understand then to accept. But not all the time.

This is a long due post of the vid but it doesn't hurt to remind you again. I'd like to clear up too that Danvil isn't a scam but their marketing strategy sucks, that's why most of the planholders go home restless feeling conned. That's how I felt when I fell for their dirty tactics. Good thing I got out of it. Whew.
