So! We have some awesome new things going on, friends... I'm headlining an underground Rhythm Society event on June 15 (no ticket sales--read this email to learn one of the only ways you can get to go!). No public ticket sales, attendance by personal invite only. My email list subscribers are invited to request a personal invitation, which are very limited by the event presenters. If you would like to attend, email me by June 6 with *two* pieces of info for *each* guest who wants to attend. (1) First and Last Name (2) Email address. _New Book Feature: Beyond the Dance Floor

About eight (!) years ago I was contacted by Rebekah Farrugia, who was working on a book about female DJs. This book is "A pathbreaking study of the women who create electronic dance music 'Beyond the Dance Floor' focuses on the largely neglected relationship between these women and the conceptions of gender and technology that continue to inform the male-dominated culture surrounding electronic music." Rebekah and I have chatted regularly over the years, as she continued to craft her book, and I'm excited to announce that it's finally available for pre-order! (Shipping mid-summer)

Hi and Happy 2012 Friends! I know...I know...it's been forever since I last wrote. So, before we get into details for this Saturday I thought I'd share an update--in the format of a fake interview. Because, why not??

YOU: Are you still playing?
ME: YES!
Y: Oh, good, because I'm ready to get down. Where have you been?
M: Well, the biggest news is that I got married (a.k.a. the greatest thing ever)--which was a blast but does take up a lot of time!
Y: Congrats! So, were you not playing at all then?
M: No, actually I've been playing a lot more private events. And, guilty confession, I'm sometimes naughty and don't get around to posting to the ol' blog. I promise not to do that again. ;)
Y: Cool, so what's the deal with this Saturday?
M: Well, first, it's for a good cause--a free clinic for homeless women with cancer. The event is aimed at women who like women, but as with everything in SF--everybody is welcome. Club Harlot is so beautiful it will make your eyes hurt and there will be live percussion all night by C.Flava, who I love. Plus, free copies of my neo.maximal mix will be handed out all night! Canceled: Unity Festival at the Canyon

Hey all. Unity Festival at the Canyon on Memorial Day Weekend has been canceled. :( There were circumstances beyond the planners' control and, well, these things happen. Watch the Unity Festival website for info on future events.

And, yes, this is the third event in a row that I've had canceled due to outside issues. Apparently I need to do penance or make a sacrifice to the gods or something... See you on the dancefloor soon, promise!

About DJ Amber:
DJ Amber has been passionately mixing and creating music since 1997, including thousands of appearances in San Francisco and around the world. As a music producer, her original tracks have been widely released, including four releases on her own label, iamthedj Recordings. Amber's most recent remix release, ”Wonder (DJ Amber’s WonderPlay Remix)”, is available on the Karmacoda compilation CD LUX LIFE: Illuminated Remixes.

Amber co-founded NorCal DJ and Music Production Academy in San Francisco, and has been a recurring guest lecturer for the UCLA Graduate School of Musicology course on “The History of Electronic Music”. From 2002 - 2003 San Francisco Bay Area locals watched Amber on television as Host of :CODE, a nightlife and electronic music television show. She has also been a featured speaker at the Remix Magazine conference, Remix Hotel. Amber has also been featured in two documentary films, “Generation E” and “Vinyl is a Girl's Best Friend”, and has has served as a resource for the non-fiction book ”The Complete History of American Music” and the fictional DJ tale ”Couch World”.

In San Francisco, DJ Amber’s residencies have included Sister SF and DNA Lounge. Amber has appeared at every leading venue in San Francisco, including 1015, Ruby Skye, and Supperclub. She also remains active in the underground scene appearing at warehouse parties and renegade events around the Bay Area.

About Alixir:
Born and raised on the East Coast, Alex, aka Alixr is driven by an obsession with music. A self-taught guitarist and student of music theory, his early influences ranged in genre from psychedelic rock and jazz, to disco, grunge and heavy metal. After relocating to San Francisco in 1995 with a handful of cash and a head full of dreams, his fate would be sealed when a growing interest in electronic dance music lured him into the local underground rave scene.

By 2005, after a decade of heavy involvement taking him through the ranks from dancefloor enthusiast to organizer and promoter, he could no longer deny his inner DJ. Years of insightful observation combined with his background in music theory made him a quick study, and the following year saw Alixr land debut gigs at major events such as San Francisco's annual How Weird Street Faire and Moontribe's legendary full moon gatherings in the deserts near LA.

These days he continues to rock dancefloors all over California with his signature blend of funked-up tech house and banging techno. Alixr has performed alongside the likes of Sandra Collins, Doc Martin, Gavin Hardkiss, Christian Martin and Lee Coombs, to name a few. He's also made guest DJ appearances on Stanford University's KZSU FM, and thrown down at many of San Francisco's top nightclubs including Mighty, Temple, 1015, Paradise Lounge and Shine.

The Mafia will be hosting the second room at this delicious event, held at one of my favorites...Supperclub. The mainroom is keeping up its end of the bargain with some juiiiicy DJs. Hi everyone! Due to unexpected broadcasting issues, Sound System Syndicate Internet Radio will not be broadcasting today. I'll be rescheduled to appear another time. I'll keep you posted, of course.

Those of you following my side project, the folk-inspired band The Everhearts: We'll be playing our one-year anniversary show on Saturday, March 6. Find us at McGrath's Irish Pub in Alameda opening the night at 8pm. Headlining is Gayle Lynn and The Hired Hands. $5 cover. 21+.

About the show...

Sound System Syndicate
California Underground Dance Music Radio

SSS CA Underground is a bi-weekly webcast (unless scheduled differently). Our goal is to provide a platform to expose the talent of local Bay Area Dj’s in the Underground Dance scene to the friends and fans with our web cast.

We will have at least one guest dj every show along with the host Dj’s (DJ ZION & DJ Reign.) We will have a short interview with our guest dj. We aim on giving the guest djs an opportunity to share their love of dance music and allow them to play any style of music. This is not always the case, as when getting booked for gigs you usually have to play what they book you for.

Each show you can comment during the show or ask questions to the djs about their music. And we will do our best to answer them. We are striving to bring you a wide variety of underground dance music.

Dance music that is hardly heard out on the radio or in the clubs. Many of our guest djs play our regularly here in the Bay Area at Clubs or Underground raves.

We are very excited to bring you this new format and share with all of our new listeners as we take this journey through our passion “Dance Music” Thank you for tuning in!

Bryan Zentz (Plus 8, Disruptor, Portland)
The most interesting musicians are those who remain constant and true to themselves come what may. An essential part of the daily ritual, music defines their very existence offering both spiritual and emotional release. Nevertheless, it’s not always easy to follow your instincts especially when they fall outside the current mainstream sound but as Bryan Zentz proves, if your hand stays steady and your aim is pure the spotlight will return to you again.

Bryan’s current EP on Plus 8 finds him rolling out on a Richie Hawtin label a full 15 years after the pairs’ first collaboration. In a sense, it brings his career full circle, it was Hawtin who originally gave Bryan the motivation and belief to keep going while he was still looking for his first deal and indeed, it all came good in 1994 with a debut release on the legendary Definitive label. Recording as Barada, classics such as Mathematics and Glue backed up by the full length album Strategies for a Deeper Design, while other early releases on labels like EXperimental, Bush and Clashbackk really caught the imagination of the global techno community resulting in remixes for Woody McBride, Christian Smith, Marco Bailey, Hardcell, Ken Ishii and Tim Xavier (to name a few) and a DJ schedule that’s taken him across the USA, France, Belgium, Australia and Japan
