Subtle shifts can make a big difference, featuring photo by @DallasNagata and @HiIAmHelene

The other day Dallas did a gypsy dancer shoot with our friend and go-to model, Helene. While I was reviewing the final images, I was struck by these two images, which were side-by-side. It is said that with humans, 90% of communication is non-verbal, with 70% of that being body-language. We are attuned to the subtlest shifts in body posture, even though we may not be conscious about it at the very moment we're affected by it. Things like the twitch of an eye or a micro-second frown can speak volumes, especially when caught on camera.

Here, Helene changed per posture ever so slightly (I'm not going to say where...let me know what you noticed in the comments!), significantly altering the feel from one frame to the next.

It just goes to show, the art in photography (and modeling) is truly in the small things.

See more from the gypsy dancer shoot at Dallas' blog: http://dallasnagata.com/2011/12/gypsy-dancer/

Absence: @JPACteams and @Daniel_Inouye

Recently I had the honor of being invited to shoot at the gound-breaking ceremony for the new Joint Pacific Accountability Command building or, colloquially, JPAC HQ.

JPAC's mission is to bring soldiers home. As part of the POW-MIA accountability effort, they investigate cold cases and travel the pacific rim matching records to remains in an attempt to bring every one of America's warfighters home. Recently they saw an expansion of their mission, and needed the space to further accelerate their forensic research. Senator Dan Inouye sponsored this expansion, and was present to see the project begin.

It was my first time seeing him in person.

For a man as old and fragile-looking as he is, Senator Inouye has quite a presence. I immediately became fixated his right arm--which he'd lost in World War II--resulting in the photos below, particularly that first one. There is something subtly moving about this absence, and I keep coming back to these pictures and dwelling on it.

These photos also make me think of his speech that day. He explained that he felt he didn't need to justify the expense associated with the expanson of JPAC's mission, regardless of how many jobs and international connections it would bring. For him it was about honor, and about a promise he'd made during the war. At the time it wasn't a political buzzword, but rather a promise between soldiers in the 442nd and across the Army: Everyone comes home, dead or alive. Today the sentiment is enshrined and institutionalized, but I doubt the feeling is as visceral for me--an active-duty soldier--as it probably still is for him. At the lectern, the depths of his passion were palpable.

He wasn't talking to us, he was talking to his lost brothers in arms.

In a way--and I know this is pure conjecture on my part--I guess after the groundbreaking I saw the absence of right arm as symbolic of the absence amongst our ranks (83,579 unaccounted for since WWII), and perhaps that's why I'm drawn to it...that unsettling contrast, knowing something should be there, but isn't.

Quiet, and serene, and in some ways beautiful, but terrible all the same.

Best,

Mixing 1970's Polaroid Land-Cam with a 2010 PCB Einstein on Gypsy shoot with @DaejaFallas and @DallasNagata!

Those of you that know me know that I usually find my brain tickled by marrages of opposites, which I think is best illustrated by my small collection of look-disposable-yet-are-not Starbucks cups. Recently I got a chance to apply this to photography on a Gypsy Lingerie and Swimwear shoot with Daeja Fallas and my wonderful bride, Dallas.

Dallas and I are pretty well equipped with a variety of photographic equipment at this point. Amongst our various tools, we have a few Pocketwizards and two Paul C. Buff Einsteins, which we brought to the shoot. The pocketwizards are pretty new, but the current version of Paul C. Buff's Einstein was only finished in very late 2010...late enough that I'd really call it 2011 tech. I know this is random, but bear with me, it'll make sense in a minute.

So, after shooting the first look, Daeja all of a sudden breaks out a POL 195 land camera, a professional-grade, $700 Polariod camera manufactured in the 1970's! She starts shooting, and I suddenly realize...this thing has a hot-shoe! I get to thinking maybe we can use a Pocketwizard to trigger the Einstein and add pro-lighting to the mix, to increase the overall quality of the shoot...well, I guess that's not entirely true. I was really thinking "how rad it would be if I could get this old stuff and this new stuff to work together!?!?!"

So, I ask Daeja if I can stick a Pocketwizard on there to see whether it'll work. She agrees, slips on the radio telemetry module, and....

Click!

Nothing.

Disappointment :(

Undeterred, however, I sneak over to the camera when Daeja isn't using it to inspect just how this hot-shoe works, and I notice something: a familiar-looking hole.

At this point my dude instincts kick in...there is a hole, so something belongs in this hole, and I think I have just the thing! This hole seems to be an earlier version of the cable trigger slot on our Canon 580EX II, and we have said cable on set! I scurry over to see whether the peg will fit in this particular hole, which it does, but not all the way due to the screw-lock which holds it in modern speedlights. Nontheless, I'm encouraged by early tests with other equipment, I bring Daeja the rig I just cobbled together for her next set of Polariods.

"Is this gonna work?" Daeja asks, still tender from her earlier heartbreak.

"Well, let's try and see." I reply.

She studiously, expertly composes her shot.

Click!

Pop!

We erupt into incredulous cheers and laughter! Our Einstein just worked, taking the afternoon's instant shooting to a whole new level!

Of course, I'm just giggling because of the contrast: our top-of-the-line, modern strobe was just set off by a camera made in the 70's. That was pretty rad. ;)

Here are my celebratory photos, where you can see how the setup worked. Make sure you keep an eye out on Daeja's page, and Gypsy's website for the polaroids, and all the other film photography which was taken that day...I can tell you now that it'll be awesome!

Keep an eye out for my next zany opposites project--linking up our PCB Einstein wireless light setup to Dallas' Lomo Diana Camera! Tightly controlled digital lighting on a camera you can't fully control ever! :3

Best,

Thoughts on @StarAdvertiser Going "Premium."

So, it would appear that our recently-merged local newspaper, the Star-Advertiser, has decided that it's going to start charging for content. Not all content, it says, but "premium" content will now be payed for, ostensibly by use of a pay wall or some other method.

My initial reaction was to rage, and I hope I didn't hurt my journalist friends' feelings with my initial outburst. I think journalism is an important field, and I definitely think my Hawaii journalist friends' work is worthwhile, and worth getting paid for. Ironically, though, the fact that I find journalism so important is the reason the idea of a paywall makes me mad.

To me, journalism is about keeping the populace informed of the news. While this sounds simple, its implications are deep. I've found that for places like the NYTimes, the important pieces--substantial articles, in-depth news articles, and analysis--are often behind paywalls. I find this infuriating because theses are generally the articles that need the widest distribution, and I feel that charging for them is akin to holding the information hostage. Sort of like saying "yes, the Senator is involved in a huge scandal that affects your future and that of your children...and if you want to hear about it, you'd better pay up!"

But, as I cooled my heels over Captain America (very good, btw), I got to thinking...there is a way that I could see "going Premium" as a good thing.

I keep hearing horror stories of newspaper and newscaster relationships to advertisers who, holding the purse strings, would attempt (or succeed at) dictating the content of a show. Drawing money directly from the readers would theoretically free editors to cater to the needs of only one customer: the community. I see this as a very fortunate turn of events, but it would require that the Star-Advertiser give up its ad content for me to buy into the idea that I'm getting more neutral--and ergo higher quality--content.

In addition to going *completely* ad-free, I would expect for the newspaper to expand their news staff and dedicate them to providing extensive, high-quality, and in-depth coverage of Hawaii, both in terms of written articles and photography, and I would expect more coverage/analysis in key areas such as local politics, economics, business, etc, by local experts or at least journalists covering those beats. I would also expect niche segments, such as contributions from local bloggers and other pinpoint subject matter experts.

I'd also expect at least summarized versions of the high-impact, extensive articles to be available to everyone for free, to meet my expectations from journalism vis-a-vis keeping the general populace informed of current events in the community.

Finally--and it seems that they are doing this at least--I expect to be able to access the information anywhere across a variety of media. This means web, PDF, iOS, Android, and even Chrome formats.

In summary, I have serious reservations over charging for the newspaper, especially since I don't really have faith that the Star-Advertiser will meet the criteria for value added that I stated above. If they do, though, I think that it'd be a great improvement and would be willing to pay the price for the improved coverage.

Please let me know whether you agree, disagree, or have other thoughts and expectations.

Best,

Ed White

Pinpoint Marketing as a Service: A Defense of Data-Mining

So, with the release of Google+, I've seen a lot of back-and-forth about the use of user data from social networks. Facebook has often been accused of playing fast and loose with user data, including selling demographic information to marketers, who've also been demonized for going to great lengths while gathering as much information as possible about their target users. As a caveat, I've certainly read of some techniques that can feel pretty creepy, I understand that this data could be misapplied in the wrong hands, and I can't vouch for misuse past indiscretions, but I would like to talk for a second about the use of your personal information in a marketer's hands.

Marketers are people who want to sell you things, plain and simple. They are not some shadowy force seeking to brainwash you, nor do they have the ability to. Even though they have the ability to use influence techniques to better state their value, or even increase the pressure to buy, ultimately they can't get you to buy anything that you don't need or want. Marketing, ideally, is as much knowing what your end-user needs as figuring out how to get your product on their radar. Services like Facebook, Twitter, and now Google+ make this incredibly easy, since you're furnishing enormous amounts of meta-data every day you use it.

Facebook makes the use of this data immediately apparent: within minutes of clicking a "Like" button--especially for a product page--the ads Facebook serves you will change. Change your relationship status to "engaged?" Expect to see some ads for local wedding planners. Interact a lot with your dad, who "Likes" power tools? Expect to see ads for Craftsman around Fathers' Day.

Jamie Beckland extolls the death of mass demographics, and I couldn't agree more. Many fear this (or are mostly annoyed, as I am, by junk mail), but honestly I see it as a service when served up in "public" places. Really, there are hundreds upon hundreds of people trying to figure out what I could use and then letting me know it's there. I have no problem with FB suggesting anniversary gifts based on what my wife has been "liking" lately in the periphery...honestly it's possible that Facebook could become better at taking hints than I am!

Google could take this even further with their Google+ concept. Don't believe for a second that the inventors of AdWords (their primary source of funding) would not take advantage of this granular treasure trove. In fact, there is a rather extensive article on Wired detailing how Google decided to get deep in the social game because Facebook would not let them see their toys.

With this information, Google could provide incredibly targeted ads across the internets (all seven of them), creating what could become in essence a suggestion engine based on what, statistically, you are likely to need, even if you are in an incredibly specific demographic group like, say, a capuchin monkey owner who loves to dress their pet in Prada. If there is someone who can fulfill your deviant need, using the meta-data, they can find you and serve you an ad--one that you'd be likely to click, and likely you'd be glad you found. Freak.

Hopefully I've been able to re-frame the discussion about granular collection on information for marketing purposes, at least a little. Using the social networks, ads on the internet could eventually become extremely useful, as opposed to the pain and eyesore that they are now, especially if Google+ becomes successful and extends their layer of Googley goodness across the internet. Expect big changes either way...and you don't have to be afraid of it!

I've been slowly coming back to life and getting used to being in Hawaii all over again, and part of it is getting back to the small adventures with Dallas, which I missed so much. Today we went (among other places) to Military HQ, a military surplus store over on Sand Island where we got to see a whole bunch of military equipment ranging from the World Wars to modern times. It was really cool, and we were able to pick up a prop grenade for only ten dollars! Will definitely be back here in the future!

Total Lunar Eclipse will coincide with Winter Solstice for first time in 456 years. Hawaii has front-row seats Monday night!

Beginning at 7:29 pm on Monday December 20th Hawaii will be treated to a full view of the first total Lunar eclipse anywhere since 2007.

But, as if that weren't significant enough, the eclipse will coincide with the Winter Solstice--the shortest day of the year--for the first time in 456 years.

The winter solstice was believed to have special significance in many cultures which relied on astronomy to drive their spirituality, though this particular astronomic event is so rare that in my (admittedly short) research it seems many contemporary adrehents are not quite sure what kind of significance should be attached to it, though most agree that there is something special about this day.

"Eclipses could be taken either way," he said. "Certainly it would have been an omen, but it would have been up to the interpretation of specialists of whether it was good or bad."

Shane Hawkins, Professor of Greek and Roman Studies at Carleton University in Ottowa - Montreal Gazette

To commemorate the event, the Bishop Museum will be hosting a viewing party from 8:30 pm to 11:00 pm. The viewing event is free, but interested participants should RSVP at 848-4176. If you want to go, call soon because slots are filling up fast!

Definitely wish I were there to see this!

#Kickstarter is Liberating Your Viewing Experience: @XtopherSalmon, @NeilHimself, and the price of "The Price"

DISCOVERING THE PRICE

Full disclosure: I'm a sucker for a Cinderella story.

My morning started like most here in Afghanistan: I woke up, rolled over, and proceeded with checking emails, tweets, and Facebook entries from a stateside life that largely continues on in my sleep and absence. On the particular morning of November 10th I received one of Kickstarter.com's occasional emails which highlight interesting projects in need of charitable patrons. Upon scanning the email, I noticed Neil Gaiman's (whose name I had heard once or twice) name attached to one of the projects and clicked through with a "huh." Internet service in Afghanistan being what it is, I let the pitch video load throughout the day...the following is what greeted me when I came home:

Chills were the last thing I was expecting to feel when I watched this video.

During the best pitch I've seen in a long time, Christopher Salmon introduces us his vision for Neil Gaiman's "The Price," (a very short and poignant story which is available to read online, probably much to Neil's chagrin) which was originally introduced in the Smoke And Mirrors collection.

Within the first fifteen seconds you're introduced to an stunning animatic set in a study of blues, underscored by powerful music, and pleasantly (surprisingly!) narrated by Neil himself.

Chris goes on to explain where his inspiration came from, and the incredible story of how he wrote Neil Gaiman--a widely published author with multiple feature films and TV shows under his belt--and received an enthusiastic response in return.

Chris goes on to show more footage, the reaction he received, and his plans for the future of the project, should he be funded.

His asking price: $150,000

In a departure from my norm, I donated.

THE (NOT SO) HIDDEN BEAUTY OF CROWDFUNDING

To be quite frank, I've never donated to a single Kickstarter or IndieGoGo project before. Much like it took me a while to understand how I could Tweet without feeling like, or being perceived as a raging narcissist, it took me a while to understand how artists begging internet denizens for money to fund their personal projects could be a service...but today the angle, and the purpose clicked.

I've always loved the perfectly democratic nature of the internet...if you have a compelling idea, you'll get noticed, no matter who you are. This, theoretically, should extend to the thoroughly democratic, free market idea of voting with your Dollars, or putting your money where your mouth is. Chris compelled me to do just that today.

See, Chris seems to be a helluva storyteller, if his pitch is any indication whatsoever. The polish and dedication in his pitch, and the emotionally charged scenes showcased made me really want to see what he could do when properly funded, and it would appear I'm not alone.

The beauty of this is that it's fans of Neil Gaiman's stories and Christopher Salmon's storytelling who are funding this project. There are no producers involved, no studio bureaucracy choosing winners and losers, no crazy, misleading marketing campaigns...there's just Chris, his idea, and us. What is his idea worth to you?

I think that this is what's really at the heart of Web 2.0...equality of ideas across the world, and now I get to participate in that more fully.

As of this post, Chris has raised almost $60,000, and has shown initiative, already having recruited Zoe Keating, a chart-topping cellist to help compose and record the score.

JOINING THE CROWD

As Neil points out in his journal post regarding the project, $150,000 is quite a bit of money, but the minimum donation of $10 is not (and there are great rewards from $25, a digital copy of the film, to $5000, VIP seating at the premier with Neil Gaiman and Chris Salmon), Kickstarter's new Amazon.com payment process is pretty painless, and money only changes hands if the project is fully funded by 1 December 2010. Again, this highlights the beauty of crowdfunding...enough people like myself find the idea compelling, and we donate a miniscule amount, big things happen!

So, if like me, you were compelled by the possibilities that Chris and Neil present, please take the time to pledge to their Kickstarter campaign...or any other that moves you, for that matter.

Thanks, and all the best.

Found this on the ground of an abandoned building...it was really striking, even without photographic technique and post-processing applied. I spend several minutes just staring at it and thinking:

Where do you see Afghanistan in 2020?

Small Edits Make a Big Difference - #Lightroom3

If there is one thing that I've noticed about the multiple photographers that I follow who are doing 365 Photo Projects, the rigorous regimen of taking a picture worth posting every day has challenged them, and forced them to improve by leaps and bounds, and this is truer for none more than Lyndon Quelnan. He is a self-professed photo-newbie who, with the help of his cousin, is trying to pursue and advance his interests. I've been cheering him on, since I remember not so long ago when I was in the same place!

Yesterday's post was a picture of his friend Crazy Bob, who was goofing around cleaning and eating Oreos. The first picture was fun, but the composition on the second really made me smile...but I knew it could use some improving.

In the spirit of constructive criticism, I downloaded his picture and made the edits I would have made to the picture in stages, so that he could have a rough idea what I did as he picked up Lightroom 3. Because of limited bandwidth, and for the convenience of everyone being able to see the changes in one place (they're pretty subtle), I made the picture edits into one file that's 1920 pixels horizontally so no one will be wanting for full-rez images on a standard monitor.

First in the series is the original picture, as seen on Lyndon's Posterous. I liked the wacky face, the composition, the focus point on the eye, and the daintily-held Oreo. Lyndon's composition was great, but the colors (in my decidedly unprofessional opinion) were off...the yellow cast definitely gave it a rather grungy feel that I felt was unappealing in a hospital/food setting, so I went about changing it!

Phase One: One of the things I do in photos is focus on the windows to the soul. I tend to use the whites of a subject's eyes to determine white balance. I used the White Balance Dropper tool in Lightroom on the whites of his eyes to get a rough approximation of the white balance I wanted, then used the WB slider to fine-tune the image. After that, I bumped up the brightness in order to get rid of the grey (gray?) cast, then bumped up the contrast slightly in order to offset any loss of detail from the brightening.

Phase Two: In the interest of keeping things simple, I only boosted the clarity and vibrance settings, just to show what a difference that can make. It's subtle, but it does make a difference.

Phase Three: Here, I worked on the details. I used the brush tool to turn up the saturation and clarity in Bob's nice eyes, then went back and gave it a second dose of clarity with a second brush passover. Then I turned to his teeth--which were still pretty yellow--and used the brush to turn down the saturation and boost the brightness a little. I noticed he was a little red, so I used the HSL slider to turn down the red and yellow channels just a tad, but went back with the brush and boosted the saturation back in his lips in order to retain his expression. Then I used the brush again to brighten the cream in the Oreo.

...and that's it. Just a few minutes worth of simple editing caused the aesthetic changes you see above!

Hopefully what I said made sense, Lyndon, and I hope that the tips help you in your future endeavors! I'm glad to see you're improving, and I hope to see you continue that trend!

Happy shooting!
